qbsdupgraded to 17.10 just a few minutes ago after ensuring the old 17.04 was all up-to-date. The KDEPIM comes up telling me to start akonadi. Click button to do so. All I now have is the much dreaded "Retrieving Folder Contents" and it just sits there04:38
qbsdanyone know how to get this to work again?04:38
qbsdContact list shows my contacts, but all their information is gone. Akregator seems to work04:41
qbsdsigh04:41
qbsdGoogle account needed to be recreated. Now to clean up the rest of the mess. Theme is changed and fonts are not as I had set them04:54

GizmoRomickThat's funny, i've always been trying to get the windows key to bring up the kde menu.  Since the win key is part of the key combination for other things, it doesn't seem to let me.16:54

valorieI'm finding it great as well22:20
clivejoGuest43444: what do you use your system for?22:29
Guest43444valorie why i am so stupid and used the old 16.04 LTS..22:32
valorieno no, there are valid reasons for using the LTS22:33
valoriewhen stability is your most important value, and you don't want to update all the time22:34
Guest43444clivejo for normal office and design works22:34
valorieme, I like living on the edge22:34

kubuntedwhat a revolting piece of sh!t ... i want my windows 95 back... linux is dead has gone to absolute worthless unusab;lle sh!t22:54
* clivejo yawns22:55
Taggnostr4hello22:55
clivejohi Taggnostr422:55
Taggnostr4htop says my ram is almost full and my swap is half used, but the system monitor says there's plenty of ram (and agrees on the swap being half used)22:56
Taggnostr4I did some research but can't figure out where the value reported by htop comes from22:56
Taggnostr4free -m also seems to agree with htop22:56
Taggnostr4I don't have anything using up all that memory, but the pc gets laggy at times22:57
clivejowhat OS are you using?22:57
Taggnostr4kubuntu 17.1022:58
clivejowhat does ksystemguard say?22:58
Taggnostr4the status bar at the bottom says Memory: 1.3 GiB / 15.2 GiB22:59
Taggnostr4the graph also is around 1.3GiB22:59
Taggnostr4              total        used        free      shared  buff/cache   available23:00
Taggnostr4Mem:          15562       12660        1727          76        1174        289423:00
Taggnostr4this is the output of free -m, it says 12.6/15.5 used, same as htop23:00
Taggnostr4the value reported by ksysguard seems about right, I just have a few programs open, so 1.3 is a reasonable value23:01
Taggnostr4but if that was true, why free and htop report a different value, why the swap is being used, and why the pc sometimes lags?23:01
clivejoif you go into ksysguard and sort the process list by memory23:04
clivejoshould show you what is using the memory23:04
Taggnostr4yes, nothing suspicious there23:05
Taggnostr4and the same in htop23:05
clivejoweird23:05
Taggnostr4firefox is eating 800M, plasma 65M, krunner 40M23:06
Taggnostr4even the memory % in htop barely adds app to 10%23:06
Taggnostr4I also tried to show kernel threads in htop and nothing interesting came up23:07
Taggnostr4could something like the kernel use memory without being listed as a process in htop/ksysguard?23:08
Taggnostr4with 17.10 I'm having issues with the wifi kernel module, so I wonder if it's related (apparently the new version of the kernel fixed this, but it's not in the repos yet)23:08
Taggnostr4or maybe htop/free report virtual/shared memory whereas ksysguard doesn't?23:10
clivejodunno, never seen that before23:16
Taggnostr4the lag I'm experiencing seems related to plasma23:17
Taggnostr4like alt+f1 or alt+f2 take a while to reply sometimes23:17
clivejoYou seem to have plenty of memory23:17
Taggnostr4or while switching activities/desktop sometimes it gets "stuck" or the task bar at the bottom doesn't update and it becomes laggy23:18
Taggnostr4I found that running kwin restart fixes the problem23:18
Taggnostr4also the memory problem seems to appear after a while, like if there's something that slowly leaks memory until it fills it up, but the actual process is not visible23:19
Guest43444ok bye23:31
