aLaixHello guys, how are you doing? I normally don't ask for help in IRC (because i always look in the forums) but just like 5min ago my touchpad stopped working, it's weird since i can click and right click using the touchpad, but the cursor won't move. I looked into dmesg i couldn't find any error there, so I would like to ask, how can somebody debug02:42
aLaixa touchpad issue?02:42
aLaixOk i did "sudo evtest /dev/input/event7" and i can see all the events there, where should i look next?02:45
aLaixit's a pity, ok have a nice night guys.02:54
ubuntuM8anyone awake tonight?05:18
ubuntuM8i wondering how to mount my current ubuntu mate distro from a live usb session n login to terminal?05:24
ubuntuM8searched around but idk the keywordz05:25
Sum1lson18ubuntuM8: You're on the Live session now?05:29
ubuntuM8yes05:29
ubuntuM8i was having issues with amdgpu freezing X so i need to switch back to radeon05:30
Sum1lson18ubuntuM8: You haven't installed it to hdd yet?05:30
ubuntuM8no ubuntu 16.04 is installed to ssd05:31
ubuntuM8ubuntu mate ofc05:32
ubuntuM8i suppose i could boot up then switch to ttyl05:32
ubuntuM8tty105:32
Sum1lson18ubuntuM8: So you need to change driver on the ubuntu 16.04? Nothing will be saved when you shut down the Live session05:33
ubuntuM8https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze05:33
ubuntuM8yeah well i tried my best to install the amdgpu driver as amd website instructs, and it boots without error05:34
ubuntuM8but seems to freeze after 10-15 minz05:34
Sum1lson18ubuntuM8: Trying to understand what you did. You're in Live session and you installed the amdgpu driver?05:36
ubuntuM8no lol05:36
ubuntuM8the live session runs find on the built-in radeon driver, the install i did last week is unstable because of the amdgpu driver05:36
ubuntuM8for some reason the advance boot options are blank05:37
Sum1lson18ubuntuM8: So you need to go back to the radeon driver in Ubuntu 16.04 ?05:37
ubuntuM8seems that 'amdgpu-pro-uninstall05:38
ubuntuM8would the trick05:38
Sum1lson18ubuntuM8: There won't be any additional drivers in the Live session05:38
ubuntuM8i suppose i could boot into the ssd again, with 15 minz of time i could easily remove it05:39
Sum1lson18ubuntuM8: Yes, unselect the proprietary driver in the installed session and reboot05:40
ubuntuM8the only reason i cam in was because i remember once login to a user account (on disk) from a live session05:40
ubuntuM8that is possible right?05:41
Sum1lson18ubuntuM8: It's possible to chroot into the installed session to repair or re-install Grub from a Live media05:54
ubuntuM8only for grub?05:54
ubuntuM8chroot i'll look it up05:55
ubuntuM8https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCdRecovery05:56
ubuntuM8yeah that's more like it05:56
ubuntuM8well i'm going to try the 'easy' mode05:57
ubuntuM8boot into the ssd n got to tty105:57
ubuntuM8will be back if it still crashed on radeon05:58
Sum1lson18ubergoose: chroot - ing to the installed session you should be able to perform any root command on it06:09
Sum1lson18Sorry ubergoose , other user left06:09
ubuntuM8well 16 minz uptime on radeon from the ssd boot06:20
ubuntuM8so far so good06:20
ubuntuM8now the fun part beginz debugging06:20
ubuntuM8some comments said something about gcc packages from 14.04 left in the 16.04 install06:21
ubuntuM8i'll look into that06:21
ubuntuM8https://askubuntu.com/questions/889346/amd-gpu-on-ubuntu-16-0406:27
ubuntuM8ah06:31
ubuntuM8amd64-microcode wasn't enabled06:31
infid1castr0if anyone has any ideas to help a very elementary problem...  Just wiped my disk and installed mate, but whenever I reset the only option I have to boot is from the liveusb, unsure what I can do to remedy06:32
ubuntuM8have u tried ejecting the usb or changing bios boot order?06:33
infid1castr0when I launch without the usb, screen states no bootable drive, and when I go into launch options, it only shows the usb, even though it is fifth in boot order06:33
ubuntuM8hmm, just one hdd ?06:34
infid1castr0yes that is correct06:36
alkisginfid1castr0: are you currently booted from the usb?06:38
infid1castr0haha yes, was searching the wiki and got on the chat, I can get on from another computer in a bit though06:39
alkisgFrom the usb, what's the output of this command? sudo lsblk --fs06:39
infid1castr0@alkisg can I just copy that output here?07:03
alkisg!pastebin07:05

alkisginfid1castr0: ^07:05
infid1castr0cheers07:06
infid1castr0https://paste.ubuntu.com/25908962/07:06
alkisginfid1castr0: why "mmcblk0p1"? Is that an sd card?07:08
infid1castr0I am not sure why, but no sd card here...  just an old acer laptop that I wiped and the usb with MATE on it07:08
infid1castr0sorry I am of little help07:08
alkisginfid1castr0: and the output of `sudo parted -l` ?07:10
alkisgSounds like your *stick* is sda, and your disk is mmcblk0, which should be the opposite :D07:10
infid1castr0that gave me an error actually:07:11
infid1castr0https://paste.ubuntu.com/25908968/07:11
alkisginfid1castr0: the internal disk, is it ssd?07:13
alkisgor some internal memory?07:13
alkisgor is it a real rotational disk?07:13
infid1castr0oh wow just realizing this,07:14
infid1castr0eMMC actually07:14
alkisgWell, it's possible it's been worn out, broken07:14
alkisgDid you see disk errors while installing?07:15
infid1castr0none while installing, wasn't until I had wiped and installed I had this problem07:15
infid1castr0and I still get through the installation, it says restart now, then it just loads me back into the live usb07:16
alkisginfid1castr0: in `dmesg`, do you see io errors?07:16
infid1castr0yeah these two at the bottom07:18
infid1castr0https://paste.ubuntu.com/25908986/07:18
alkisginfid1castr0: so, it sounds like your emmc is broken and ubuntu can't write to mbr07:23
alkisgSo the bios then doesn't see the boot code07:23
infid1castr0oh wow what a shame, that would explain it though07:24
alkisgYou can try from the live cd07:24
alkisgUnmount everything, and go to gparted, and create a new partition table, formatting everything07:25
alkisgIf that can be applied, all is well, if not, the disk is broken07:25
infid1castr0is that different from using the live usb?07:25
alkisgSorry, I meant live usb07:25
alkisgBut you'll erase everything on the disk while trying that07:25
infid1castr0ok I will try that, I can always burn the iso again if that will help too07:27
alkisgI think I didn't express myself correctly07:31
alkisgYou don't need a cd07:32
alkisgYou don't need to re-create or format the live usb07:32
alkisgYou only need to format the emmc, to test if it's writeable or not07:32
alkisgIf you can, then you reinstall ubuntu to the disk, and it's ok07:32
alkisgif you can't, you need to replace the emmc07:32
infid1castr0alkisg I completely understood after I replied haha, I am formatting the emmc as we speak07:32
alkisgCool07:33
infid1castr0thank you very much for your help, I apologise for my naivety07:33
alkisgDon't worry, you're doing fine07:33
infid1castr0alright I unmounted and formatted the whole drive, now I cannot seem to find gparted though07:39
alkisgHow did you format without using gparted?07:40
infid1castr0just using the ubuntu disks utility tool I guess07:40
alkisgAh. Try Alt+Ctrl+T to open a terminal, and there type: sudo gparted07:41
infid1castr0that did it, and you said to create a new partition table?  Is that only on the emmc drive?07:42
alkisgYes, don't touch the usb drive at all07:42
alkisgDo you still see the partitions?07:42
infid1castr0yes there are four of them, one of which is fat16, would that make a difference?07:43
infid1castr0well three partitions and one unallocated07:43
alkisgIf you formatted using the disks utility, and you're still seeing partitions, that's a bad sign07:44
alkisgYou unmounted everything, including swap, right?07:44
infid1castr0I might have done it incorrectly actually, I formatted each partition individually I am realizing07:45
infid1castr0so although there are three, they are all individually formatted07:46
alkisgOK using gparted create a new partition table07:46
alkisgThen close gparted, open it, and see if it's still empty07:46
infid1castr0msdos?07:46
alkisgYes07:47
infid1castr0new partition table done, and now there is nothing there07:48
infid1castr0just one unallocated07:48
alkisgOK close gparted, and open it again07:48
infid1castr0done, same thing - 1 unallocated07:48
alkisgThat's good, any recent io errors in dmesg?07:48
jrjPouring myself a strong coffee07:49
jrj$WORK is upgrading to Win10 today07:49
infid1castr0same ones, but with more lines after07:49
infid1castr0https://paste.ubuntu.com/25909120/07:49
infid1castr0that is after I just reran the dmesg07:50
alkisgThat's good07:50
jrjLord have mercy on my damned soul07:50
alkisgNow proceed with ubuntu reinstallation, and when it finishes, don't reboot, but write here07:50
infid1castr0ok, I will just follow the installation wizard from the desktop?07:51
alkisgClick "continue using ubuntu" and run `sudo gparted -l` and see if everything is ok now07:51
alkisgYes07:51
infid1castr0ok thanks again mate, I will be back in a bit07:51
alkisgnp07:51
infid1castr0and jrj, good luck with that, I am finally starting to make the full switch to Linux after getting sick of Windows in general07:52
jrjinfid1castr0: The work laptop i have no say in what running on it. Privately im running Linux for the part ~2 years07:52
infid1castr0alright I did that, so when I ran sudo gparted -it said it cannot be located08:13
infid1castr0but when I just run sudo gparted, the partitions seem normal08:13
alkisggparted -l08:13
alkisgnot -i08:14
alkisgAny recent io errors in dmesg?08:14
infid1castr0not looking good (((08:15
infid1castr0https://paste.ubuntu.com/25909230/08:15
alkisginfid1castr0: indeed :/08:15
alkisginfid1castr0: btw, there might be a bios option "prevent writes to sector 0"08:16
alkisgIf you're lucky, then that's it; otherwise you need a new disk08:16
infid1castr0alright, where would I find that?08:16
alkisgFirst of all try rebooting, see if it works08:17
alkisgIf it doesn't, press del to enter bios (setup), and search there08:17
infid1castr0alright will do, cheers again mate08:18
infide1castr0no luck on that one mate, same problem08:23
alkisgNew disk then :)08:30
petetehi there!08:31
infide1castr0shame, but thanks for helping me out man, I appreciate it08:31
alkisgnp08:31
peteteI have to do reboot or shutdown twice for the system to do it09:22

vimmerHi, I've been wrestling with this problem and was wondering if someone could help me figure out what is going on. I have downloaded and ./configure 'd vim into a folder in a user's /home/vim directory. Then using sudo I have run checkinstall as well as debian -i {.deb file}. Doing either places the vim binary in /usr/local/bin and it is usable for13:46
vimmera time. But it seems after shutting down (more than once?) something happens where the binaries are removed from the directory and I now have vim 7.4 on it again.13:46
vimmerI have uninstalled 7.4, purged it, and it still comes back. Which is one thing, but then I don't get why my binary gets deleted from /usr/local/bin13:47
nemois it an older vim?13:47
vimmerCompiled one is 813:47
nemothat you are trying to install?13:47
nemook13:47
nemogonna tentatively suggest #ubuntu instead of #ubuntu-mate where there's a bigger crowd13:48
vimmerLike if it was just that 7.4 was getting installed, I feel like I could modify my path or make an alias so that the /usr/local/bin one is the one that gets used, but I can't do that because something is removing it13:48
nemowell, my guess was the package management was removing it due to version conflicts13:48
nemoso if you really wanted both maybe don't use the .deb13:49
nemoor use version pinning13:49
nemobut... I didn't think that happened automatically for newer to older, just older to newer13:49
nemoso hopefully #ubuntu knows more13:49
nemoI guess if I was in your shoes of wanting both, I wouldn't use package management for my build tho13:49
vimmerI wasn't trying to keep 7.4, I was just using checkinstall because the compile guide suggested it for easy uninstall13:50
nemowell. I guess version pinning might fix this, but could screw up rest of your system tho13:50
vimmerThank you for trying, though13:53
