nbros652I am running ubuntu-mate on a raspberry pi. Upon installation, I created a second user. For whatever reason, the screensaver does not work in the second user account. It works just fine in the account that was set up during installation. The second user is set up as an administrator. Any thoughts?01:51
patrick__help01:57
patrick__i installed this s on my pi because screen would not rotate, screen still breaking my neck sideways, is there any os i can run02:00
patrick__Found My answer , Thanks :-)02:30
nbros652@patrick did you manage using the config.txt file?02:31
patrick__yes02:31
nbros652I think that's pretty much where you would want to go using any OS on the RPi02:31
patrick__gui for too many years has spoiled me, shut my brain right off eh.02:32
aniruddhbuntu mate?06:41
aniruddhIs there a docker image available for ubuntu mate?06:42
aniruddhI mean Docker package06:42
aniruddhI want to install docker on mate06:42
alkisghttp://packages.ubuntu.com/docker06:43
alkisgAll ubuntu flavors share the same repositories06:43
alkisgSo all programs are common06:43
aniruddhI am on mate 1.12.106:53
aniruddhwhich package to choose?06:54
alkisgsudo apt install docker06:56
alkisgIt's chosen automatically06:57
alkisgOr install it from synaptic06:57
alkisg!synaptic06:57
ubottuA Graphical Package Manager. For a good howto see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto06:57
CrazyTuxhello, can ubuntu mate 16.04 be upgraded to 17.10?07:13
alkisgCrazyTux: 16.04 goes to 16.10, then 17.04, then 17.1007:13
alkisgOr, 16.04 can go directly to 18.04 when it's released07:14
CrazyTuxok07:14
santociao07:14
CrazyTuxbtw, the update/upgrade policy of ubuntu mate lts is similar to the one followed by mint?07:14
alkisgCrazyTux: I haven't used mint, but I think it's using the same update/upgrade as all of debian distros07:15
jrj_alkisg: do you have a link to official docs about thise upgrade paths - and how they work07:31
=== jrj_ is now known as jrj
alkisgjrj: non lts can upgrade only to its next version. LTS can upgrade to either next version or next LTS.07:34

CrazyTuxhttps://www.howtogeek.com/176495/ubuntu-developers-say-linux-mint-is-insecure-are-they-right/07:35
CrazyTuxguys, what07:35
jrjalkisg: Thanks07:35
CrazyTuxwhat's your opinion on that?07:35
alkisgnp07:36
alkisgCrazyTux: it's a known issue that linuxmint has insecure policies, yes07:36
alkisgIt even doesn't respect the debian policy in packaging, modifying /etc...07:36
alkisgNo ubuntu developer likes its methods07:36
CrazyTuxso, linux mint is not advisable?07:36
alkisgIndeed07:36
CrazyTuxfrom security perspective?07:36
alkisgSecurity and packaging and maintenance07:36
CrazyTuxok07:37
alkisgAnd cooperation... lots of reasons07:37
jrjCrazyTux: i have been where you are07:37
CrazyTuxok07:37
CrazyTuxjrj, which other distros are you using now?07:37
jrjQuestion is - Why would you ever choose Mint over Vanilla Ubuntu ?07:37
alkisgIf implemented properly, it would be an ubuntu "flavor" instead of trying to be a "distro", which it isn't, because it doesn't have its own repositories for everything07:37
jrjCrazyTux: at home im a Ubuntu Mate user. At work we use RHEL, but thats on servers07:38
jrjalkisg: but what is their "offer" for users07:38
CrazyTuxjrj, don't know. I have used Mint before. Then I studied its update policy. Now I am using Ubuntu Mate 16.04.3.07:38
alkisgjrj: I'm not sure what you mean07:38
jrjSince the last couple of years Ubuntu native have been VERY new user friendly07:38
jrjYou can install Cinnamon on Native Ubuntu07:39
jrjThen why use Mint ?07:39
CrazyTuxI am just a non technical end user. I don't know the implications of Mint's update policy.07:39
jrjNot trying to start any flamewar  - i just dont understand their value proporsition07:39
alkisgjrj: you're asking me what mint offers? I don't know as I don't use it for all the aformentioned reasons :)07:39
alkisgInitially they offered mate and cinnamon07:40
CrazyTuxI too am not using Mint.07:40
alkisgNow they're proper debian packages07:40
alkisgSo I'm not sure what they're offering now...07:40
CrazyTuxwhat is Ubuntu native?07:40
jrjCrazyTux: Ubuntu - any flavour07:40
CrazyTuxok07:40
CrazyTuxhow many DEs can one install over Ubuntu, without affecting its performance, stability and without creating any inconsistencies.07:41
CrazyTux?07:41
jrjI was on Mint - but changed to Ubuntu when mate came round07:41
jrjCrazyTux: technically you can install all of them07:41
CrazyTuxI have Ubuntu Mate 16.04.3 and have installed lubuntu DE on it.07:41
CrazyTuxcan I install Xubuntu Desktop also?07:42
jrjhowever - i would recommend doing some VM's to test them out - then choose the one you like and go with that07:42
CrazyTuxbtw, how is Opensuse Leap as compared to Ubuntu?07:43
jrjSuse - uses RPM as packaging07:44
CrazyTuxyes. Is it stable and suitable for newbies?07:45
jrjCrazyTux: its stable enough for home users - but any distribution choice is a matter of personal taste07:50
jrjI recommend choose a few distros - test them out07:51
CrazyTuxok07:51
jrjYou basically have 2 things to choose07:51
CrazyTuxyes.07:52
jrjThe distribution you like - based on security_profile, packaging tools, community ect.07:52
jrjAnd then the DE07:52
CrazyTuxwhich is the most secure distro?07:52
jrjMost of the popular DE's are available on most of the Distroes07:52
CrazyTuxand which packaging tools are better than others?07:53
jrjAlso a matter of taste07:53
jrjThere will be no 'one' correct answer07:53
CrazyTuxok07:54
jrjEvery person you will ask have their own opinion07:54
jrjJust remember that most distros have most of the DE's as options, and most distroes let you use the same applications07:54
CrazyTuxok07:55
CrazyTuxif I install Xubuntu DE or Lubuntu DE on Ubuntu Mate, would it be the same as installing Xubuntu/Lubuntu?07:55
jrjYes07:56
jrjbasically07:56
CrazyTuxgreat.07:56
CrazyTuxplease tell me whether I can install SAP ERP on Ubuntu Mate. I know that it's not supported by SAP. Only RHEL, Oracle Linux and Suse linux are supported.07:58
CrazyTuxI just want it to work for educational purposes. For a few months.07:58
jrjCrazyTux: its not supported, you CAN get it to work, but its just too much work07:59
CrazyTuxok07:59
CrazyTuxcan I somehow install Tally ERP 9 on Ubuntu?07:59
jrjCrazyTux: i would recommend setting up VirtualBox, install one of the supported Linux's in them and install SAP on top of that08:00
CrazyTuxall of the supported distros are rpm based. Will Opensuse, Mageia or CentOS work?08:01
jrjCentos will work - as its is just a recompile of RHEL08:01
CrazyTuxok08:01
jrjUnless the installer specifically ask the OS if its RHEL08:01
CrazyTuxok08:02
jrjBut this is what I do for all stuff i HomeLab08:02
jrjI have MQ, WebSphere Application Server, Oracle DB ect ect ect running on Centos08:02
jrjAll officially supported on RHEL - and i have had no problems08:03
CrazyTuxwow. great.08:03
CrazyTuxCentOS is free, I suppose.08:03
jrjit ts08:03
jrjit is08:03
CrazyTuxwhat is the cost of buying and maintaining RHEL?08:04
CrazyTuxfor desktops?08:04
jrjPrices are on their site - but you REALLY dont need it for a lab08:05
jrjAnd you really do not want to use RHEL as a desktop08:05
CrazyTuxok. I will try CentOS then.08:05
jrjUse Centos as a Server OS08:06
CrazyTuxyes. I have Ubuntu Mate for my laptop.08:06
jrj...not a desktop08:06
CrazyTuxI use a laptop.08:06
CrazyTuxI needed to install SAP ERP only for educational purposes?08:07
CrazyTux.08:07
jrjI recommend - stay with Ubuntu Mate as the main desktop OS. Install VirtualBox with Centos as guest OS for you homelab08:07
CrazyTuxok08:07
CrazyTuxthat's a good suggestion.08:07
jrjIt works for me08:08
CrazyTuxI hope I can get SAP ERP working on CentOS.08:08
CrazyTuxthanks a lot.08:08
jrjIf its supported on RHEL6 og RHEL7 - just get CENTOS6 or CENTOS7 - and it'll work08:09
CrazyTuxok08:09
jrjCENTOS6==RHEL6, CENTOS7==RHEL708:10
CrazyTuxgreat.08:10
CrazyTuxthanks a lot.08:13
