qwererfrrthytywindows host + VB 5.1.30 + Lu host 17.10 64 works without problems?02:28
bobsmith83hello03:51
bobsmith83I installed lubuntu on an eeepc 1000 something.  screen working fine on boot, but then once desktop comes up, the left 3/4th of the screen is black and unusuable03:53
bobsmith83any clues?03:53
bobsmith83hard to troubleshoot when you cant see most of the screen03:53
wxlprobably some graphics card problem, bobsmith8303:54
wxli'd start with hitting ctrl-alt-f1 and seeing if that displays across the whole screen03:54
wxlif so, that's a good indication03:54
wxlyou can look through /var/log/{dmesg,syslog,Xorg.0.log} for more info on the errors03:55
wxlyou can grep Xorg.0.log for EE and you'll get only the errors03:55
wxlyou can do lspci -nnk03:55
wxloops03:55
bobsmith83yeah, you lost me on the last few lines03:55
wxlin terminal:03:56
bobsmith83what does ctrl-alt-f1 do?03:56
wxltakes you to a "virtual terminal"03:56
bobsmith83OK, I'll start there.  I'm going to get it up and running soon, then will be back here soon.  thanks for a starting point...03:57
bobsmith83I really need a crash course on linux terminal but I can't even get there right now...03:59
bobsmith83seems like a graphics card driver/firmware problem to me, however, it also works perfactly when booting from a live disk image04:00
wxlyou can't ctrl-alt-f1?04:02
bobsmith83ok, tried control-alt-f2 and the little bit of screen on the right went black too, jubberish across, but still an invisable line.  what does this tell me?04:25
wxlyikes that's strange but tends to suggest something deeper is wrong :(04:25
wxlyou might want to try to boot the installation image again and ensure it doesn't have the same issue04:26
bobsmith83thanks wxl.  but how do i go about fixing it? since I cant use the screen past the bios? try another distro? I reinstalled lubuntu 3x already.  as i said, it works perfact from the live cd04:27
wxli'd double check that, bobsmith8304:27
bobsmith83sorry, double check what?04:29
wxlthat the live cd still behaves correctly04:29
wxli'm inclined to believe you have some sort of hardware failure04:29
bobsmith83i know, right? seems like hardware, but no way- bios screen perfact, and live cd perfact display.  must be video driver/firmware whatever something missing link04:30
wxlbut have you checked this since you saw the problem?04:31
bobsmith83yes, multiple times, really.  i see the bios screen everytime I boot.  and I've tried the live cd multiple times too, works fine.04:32
wxlok04:32
wxli assume you're not currently on that computer?04:33
bobsmith83I'm going to try another distro right quick, see what happens.  should i put in debian, trisquel, or mint?04:33
wxlwell mint is essentially a modified ubuntu, so that might be a good way to go04:33
wxldebian is upstream to ubuntu04:33
wxli think trisquel will just make matters worse XD04:34
bobsmith83all the iso's i grabbed latest downloads in the past few days.  just getting started on gnu linux04:34
bobsmith83agreed re trisquel04:34
bobsmith83mint coming up fine on live disk...04:43
bobsmith83mint too damn close to windows! yuck!04:44
bobsmith83installing...  this is exciting, i know...04:50
bobsmith83partition errors:  "the test of the file system with type ext4 in partition #1 of scsi2 (0,0,0) (sda) found  uncorrected errors.04:56
bobsmith83what?04:56
bobsmith83any suggestions?04:59
=== mpmc_znc is now known as mpmc
bmattMOSE15:42
bobsmith83good morning.17:56
bobsmith83noob question:  trying to format hdd in "disks" utility.  I get error: "error wiping device: command-line 'wipefs -a "/dev/sda" exited with non-zero exit status 1: wipefs: error: /dev/sda: probing initialization failed: device or resource busy"17:59
bobsmith83i did some searching around and found LOTS of different methods to format disk, but dont know which other to try17:59
bmattbobsmith83: what device are you trying to format18:00
bmatta USB drive? a hdd? a potato?18:00
bobsmith83hdd18:01
bmattEh18:02
bmattAre you using a livecd?18:02
bobsmith83yes18:02
bmattIs it mounted?18:02
bobsmith83?18:02
bmattLol18:02
bmattTry unmount /dev/sda18:03
bmatterr, sorry, umount /dev/sda18:03
bobsmith83ok...18:03
bobsmith83device not mounted18:03
bobsmith83shall I mount her?18:04
bmattNo sir.18:05
bmattTry using Gparted.18:06
bmattDownload and install it18:06
bobsmith83its installed.  comes with lubuntu already18:06
bmattthen use it18:07
bobsmith83ok, i dont see a format option.  where do i start?18:07
JohnDoe_71Rusbobsmith83: https://www.dedoimedo.com/images/computers/2009/gparted-format-to.jpg18:13
bobsmith83ok...18:15
bobsmith83i've got a /dev/sda5 partition called linux-swap.  shall i select "SWAPOFF?" I have two main partitions, both I formatted, but i still get that error when i try to format in "disks" utility18:17
bobsmith83I'd like to delete the partitions and start fresh18:17
bobsmith83sorry for this boring noob question!18:18
bobsmith83sudu wipefs -a /dev/sda gives error: "probing initialization failed: device or resource busy"18:24
bobsmith83what does that mean? and how to fix?18:24
bobsmith83sudo rather... typo18:24
bmattbobsmith83: it means it's currently in use.18:27
bobsmith83doesn't seem right.  i'm running from live cd, not hdd18:28
JohnDoe_71Ruslive cd use any swap patrition. if can find it18:29
bmattbobsmith83: what does mount /dev/sda /media say18:30
bobsmith83says: already mounted or mount point busy!18:33
bmattmount | nc termbin.com 999918:34
bobsmith83what does that do? translation?18:36
wxljust use pastebinit, bobsmith8318:37
bobsmith83?18:38
wxlalthough that is cute18:38
wxlmount | pastebinit18:38
wxlin both cases, it takes the output of mount and puts it on a public pastebin18:38
bmattonly assholes use pastebinit18:39
wxlthe termbin option uses netcat, which is a utility you likely have, but the problem is that it uses a non standard port which some firewalls (esp. corporate will block)18:39
wxlbmatt: that language is a violation of the IRC guidelines. don't do it again.18:39
bmattthat's highly speculative18:39
bmattum18:39
bmattban me?18:39
bmatti don't really give a shit if i'm here to help people or not18:39
bmatt;)18:39
bmattterrible community to be banned for words you hear on TV every day. but okay18:40
wxlbmatt: if you insist on being stubborn, please leave18:40
bmattnah, you can /ignore me or fuck off. that's pretty easy18:40
bmattdon't give me your toltalitarian bullshit ideology, fella.18:40
bmatti was having a conversation with bobsmith83. so why don't you fuck off?18:40
wxlbmatt: well then a kickban it is. you can go to #ubuntu-ops if you wish to discuss it more and/or appeal18:41
bmatti don't give a shit.18:41
bobsmith83wxl, thanks for your help last night too. I got mint running fine, but then I tried to install lubuntu again18:41
bmattfuck you and your garbage channel if you wanna ban people for cursing.18:41
bmattyou need to learn to be a bit more polite and a little less aggressive18:42
bmatt"DONT DO IT AGAIN" -- fuck you. what is this, high school? are you the principal? go fuck yourself, buddy.18:42
wxlanyways bobsmith83 did that make sense?18:44
bobsmith83now, I'm trying to wipe the hdd and start fresh.  I dont want mint.  I was going to try ubuntu-mate next in hopes that it doesnt have the same display driver problem18:45
wxlunfortunately the core drivers are part of the kernel, which is part of the core that all ubuntu flavors share18:45
bobsmith83wxl, which part- booting that loose cannon?18:45
bobsmith83yes18:45
bobsmith83ok, so ubuntu-mate probably not going to work.  How about debian?18:46
wxlbobsmith83: no about how to get us the contents of mount which seems to be what bmatt was asking for18:46
wxldebian is the upstream so ubuntu so it shouldn't be much different18:46
wxlbut first: did mint work fine?18:46
bobsmith83yeah, but mint is debian base too, right?18:46
wxlwell the stream of software goes like this:18:47
bobsmith83mint was fine.18:47
wxldebian -> ubuntu -> mint18:47
wxlso let's ask another question: did you check the hashes of the iso when you downloaded lubuntu?18:47
bobsmith83i didnt check hashes, but i have installed that image on two or three other machines without problem18:48
wxlwell think about this:18:48
wxlif the hash doesn't match, it may be off by one bit18:48
wxlwhere would that bit be?18:48
bobsmith83right18:48
wxlif it's in some of the driver software..18:48
bobsmith83good point18:49
wxli have honestly never heard of a legitimate problem that involved one half of the screen being messed up18:49
bobsmith83yes, seems very strange indeed!18:49
bobsmith83but if hashes were the problem, then maybe my copy of ubuntu-mate will still work18:50
bobsmith83of corse, the livecd boots fine18:50
wxlright and that *SHOULD* be indicative of the fact that it would work when installed18:51
wxlhowever drivers are sometimes and issue18:51
wxlsometimes proprietary drivers are needed and they might be there on the live cd but require other steps to get going on the installed system18:51
wxli mean we all try really hard to limit non-free software18:51
bobsmith83yup...18:51
bobsmith83well, you think i should try ubuntumate or debian image next?18:52
wxlwell18:52
wxli guess it depends on what you're looking for in terms of the final system :)18:53
wxli would say that the goal of ubuntu is to sort of make debian easy18:53
bobsmith83prefer to start with ubuntu and graduate to debian18:53
wxlalso, to provide more updated software18:53
wxli know lots of people who would have no problem even using slackware (that's how i got started compiling my own kernels) but prefer to use ubuntu18:54
wxlit's not "less of" an OS18:54
bobsmith83ok, I'm going to try ubuntu now.  takes some time, so I'll check back in laters.  thanks again!18:54
wxlnp18:55
bobsmith83back! wxl- still here?20:06
wxlbobsmith83: rarely am i not ;)20:06
bobsmith83great.  well, ubuntu-mate installed fine!  so, happy, for now.  but this machine is a eeepc netbook, so will still be looking for something lighter weight.20:07
bobsmith83maybe my lubuntu image is bad?20:07
bobsmith83I will try downloading fresh copy and checksum20:08
wxlthen i'd say give lubuntu a go again, but make sure to check the hashes (and "check disc for defects" at the grub screen)20:08
wxlnote the hashes ensure that the iso downloaded with out errors20:09
wxlthe other check ensures that the bit by bit copy to the installation media occurred without errors20:09
wxlso you kind of have to do both20:09
bobsmith83hashes... ok.  hope i can get it working.  if not, do you think its a bug in lubuntu? should report?20:10
cristianbucan anyone help me, how i increase view of thumbnail size when uploading ?20:14
bobsmith83well, thanks again wxl!20:15
wxlbobsmith83: if and only if you can replicate it and then i have some ideas still :)20:32
bobsmith83ok.  will c how it goes.  maybe tomorrow.  cheers!20:34
jmft2Hi. On Lubuntu 17.10 here. I've noticed that the sudo command freezes up (doesn't even respond to Ctrl-C or Ctrl-Z) after I disable networking whilst connected to a wifi network. Without being able to sudo, it means I can't re-enable networking. This behaviour is not triggered if I disable and re-enable networking whilst not connected.22:16
wxlwhat are you trying to sudo?22:17
jmft2Anything. Even 'sudo' by itself freezes.22:19
wxlstrange22:19
jmft2The answer proposed here: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/401008/sudo-command-hangs didn't help, although I did notice that the /etc/hosts file didn't have my hostname under 127.0.0.1, only localhost. My hostname was under 127.0.1.1.22:19
wxli've actually got localhost AND the hostname22:21
wxlthe strace suggestion is a good one22:21
jmft2I thought that's what you wanted22:22
wxl?22:22
jmft2I thought you wanted '127.0.0.1 localhost your_hostname'22:22
wxli have:22:22
wxl127.0.0.1 localhost22:22
jmft2Whereas I had '127.0.0.1 localhost' and '127.0.1.1 hussar'22:22
wxl127.0.0.1 hostname22:22
wxlwhere hostname != hostname XD22:23
jmft2strace sudo doesn't hang, it exits with status 1.22:23
wxli know thi sis weird22:27
wxlbut sudo the strace22:27
jiusanyone home?23:28
