foobarryreally cheap phone. does it suck as much as price suggests?09:01
brobostigonmorning boys and girls.09:02
zmoylan-pii hope that 16gb rom means 16gb internal storage...09:05
zmoylan-pii have had a few ~100 phones. prepay jobbies on tescomobile... they work ok, for what they are. i use them as media players for podcasts and downloads.  1-2 games, 1-2 apps. nothing special. not great battery life. some shovelware09:06
diddledanwhat's wrong with my tellingbone?! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2A8q3XIhu019:08
daftykinswe used to have such a museum :(19:12
ali1234the worst thing is when they play a catchy tune but interrupt it every 5 seconds with "we will answer your call soon"19:18
daftykinsyip :)19:19
ali1234and speaking of compression. i did some back-of-the-envelope calculations the other day and it turns out that with modern codecs, voice comms are cheaper if i use internet data than make a call19:20
ali1234based on 3p/minute for calling and 1p/megabyte for data19:21
ali1234it's like 10x cheaper in fact19:21
daftykins*nod* so often the case19:23
ali1234its mainly due to inertia but it could lead to a sudden change in the way people use smartphones soon i think19:24
diddledanthat's why a lot of companies bundle free calling minutes19:29
ali1234well... the thing is that with the old codecs specified by the standards calling is appropriately priced. it's just that modern codecs use less data19:30
diddledanit works out better if they keep you calling on the voice network via subscription minutes than using voip19:30
ali1234it doesn't though :)19:30
diddledanfoor them I mean19:31
ali1234no, not for them19:31
ali1234it costs about the same19:31
ali1234in terms of "data used"19:31
diddledanmonetarily19:32
ali1234perhaps19:32
diddledanthey earn more per minute of calling if they get you to use voice gsm19:32
ali1234but it also increases the infrastructure costs19:33
diddledanwith 4G there's VoLTE coming down the pipe soonish which means it'll all be the same pipe (data/IP-based) rsther than voicevs data19:35
