[05:48] <NickSmolinske> I'm trying to get xubuntu working on a new HP laptop and . . . it's being quite interesting! random slow mouse movement followed by a freeze. no pattern detected yet but I am googling
[05:49] <NickSmolinske> interestingly, the last time it froze it took me to a grub command line upon reboot. I ended up reinstalling from the liveusb again and the liveusb did not detect the existing install at all
[05:50] <NickSmolinske> I don't think I've ever seen linux fail to reboot after a crash before. this is a first for me
[05:56] <NickSmolinske> huh. my root file system does not appear in "mount" on a fresh install
[05:56] <NickSmolinske> this just keeps getting weirder
[05:59] <NickSmolinske> never mind, it's there. I'm going to try the vm.dirty_background fix that I've found online. it seems to only crash while copying files, performing updates or other hard drive intensive activities

[06:07] <NickSmolinske> seems like that may have been it. I'm halfway through installing updates and it hasn't crashed yet. interestingly the dirty_ratio and dirty_background_ratio on my 14.04 install are set to the better values by default (5 and 10 rather than 10 and 20)
