alkisgChunkzZ: check .xsession-errors and syslog, you're probably missing required packages13:07
alkisgChunkzZ: if the reason for this installation method was to end up to a light system, the route was wrong :)13:08

laceylaneyHI.... I would like to be able to use transmission from a terminal but do not know how to set-up transmission-remote-cli. Would someone be able to point me to some help ??13:30
geirhalaceylaney: using transmission-gtk? or the daemon?13:31
laceylaneyI'm running transmission through openbox so gtk....13:32
geirhaok, in the gtk client's preferences, enable the web interface. That should be it13:32
laceylaneySo whenever I enable that I can access transmission through the command line ??13:33
geirhayes, it will start listening on the rpc port 9091, which is the same as the web interface13:35
ChunkzZalkisg: yeah, tis was to be on a light system. I'm running i3-wm atm so will check soon. what packages do I need?13:35
laceylaneyThank you for the help :-)13:35
laceylaneyJust tried what you suggested and the web interface loads but is set to port 9080 & whenever I try to load via the command line I'm presented with13:37
laceylaneyunauthorized user13:38
geirhaif you have authentication enabled, the default username and password is transmission iirc13:38
=== jackNemrod_ is now known as jackNemrod

laceylaneySorry I'm such a noob....13:39
geirhalaceylaney: run the remote-cli client with --help. It should have some options to specify username and password13:40
laceylaneyAhhh yea thanks :-) Will try that now.13:40
alkisgChunkzZ: if you want a light system, install lubuntu or ubuntu-mate or whatever, and start it in single mode (recovery) so that most services don't launch, and put a startx script there13:54
alkisgChunkzZ: otherwise, just use the recommended packages (apt install --install-recommends), omitting them will get you trouble.13:55
ChunkzZcheers alkisg :)13:55
littlejohnnyakik, it says graphical.target13:59
akiklittlejohnny: ok as it should for a graphical login screen14:01
akiklittlejohnny: on kubuntu 16.04 i have sddm running14:01
littlejohnnyakik, then why am i not getting the login screen though? anything to activate it? or am i missing packages?14:01
akiklittlejohnny: you can check what login manager you have with: dpkg -l | grep -E "(sddm|lightdm)" i don't remember which one xubuntu has14:04
BluesKajlittlejohnny, you prrobly opted for autologin during the install. hence no login page14:04
geirhaakik: apt depends xubuntu-desktop | grep -E '(sddm|lightdm)'14:05
littlejohnnyakik, that cmd doesnt return anything14:06
akiklittlejohnny: it's lightdm that you need to install14:07
littlejohnnyBluesKaj, no. the story is i installed server, but then i just want minimal xfce4 desktop...installed xfce4 but theres no gui.14:07
geirhaif you don't want a desktop manager, you have to start X manually with the startx command14:08
geirhathe desktop manager is the one responsible for the graphical login screen14:08
littlejohnnygeirha, that worked without installing anything else. how do i make it auto startx though?14:09
littlejohnnyif thats possible14:09
littlejohnnywithout installing desktop manager.. or isnt that possible?14:10
geirhalittlejohnny: short answer: "You don't", Long answer: You find a getty application that lets you autorun a command without logging in14:10
littlejohnnyakik, btw lightdm wants to install a shit load of packages..unity control center etc..14:10
geirhaI don't think the getty installed by default has that feature14:11
geirhalittlejohnny: try with --no-install-recommends14:11
ibmr50ewhat lightweight PDF reader you guys recommend? preferably GTK14:11

littlejohnnygeirha, sudo apt-get install lightdm --no-install-recommends and rebooted, still no gui14:16
geirhacheck if lightdm service is enabled. Also unsure if you need a ligthdm greeter14:17
littlejohnnygeirha, maybe just sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop --no-install-recommends...     i want as minimal desktop as possible lol14:18
BluesKajquite sure he needs a greeter to choose thew desktop option14:18
littlejohnnywhats the greeter package name? and how to check if lightdm service is enabled?14:19
littlejohnnysudo systemctl lightdm status?14:19
geirhaapt depends lightdm    see the -greeter packages14:19
BluesKajthe greeter is lightdm14:19
geirhathere are separate -greeter packages, which are only "recommended", not "depended on", which is why I was unsure; don't know if lightdm comes with a default greeter or not14:20
darkfrogI installed MongoDB on Ubuntu 16.04 and I can't find the service script.  It's apparently not in /etc/init.d/...where else are service scripts stored now?14:22
BluesKajafiak  it has adefault greeter14:25
geirhaok, so it's probably just a matter of getting the service enabled then14:26

ChrisRI have sort of a strange question. I'm trying to disable  squashfs on an Ubuntu machine. We're using a security scanner that expects "modprobe -n -v squashfs" to return "install squashfs /bin/true". That "install squashfs /bin/true" line is in a config file in /etc/modprobe.d/disable.conf, butg it still doesn't show up when running the modprobe command. Is there any config needed to get it to show up when actually15:00
ChrisRrunning the modprobe command? Just wondering if I'm missing something.15:00
littlejohnnygeirha, btw the status says failed.. start request repeated too quickly15:02
brainwaveChrisR: have you tried unsquashfs?15:02
littlejohnnygeirha, "service hold-off time over"15:03
littlejohnnywhys it failing15:03
geirhalittlejohnny: check the logs ... /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log15:04
ChrisRbrainwave:  that command exists, but we don't have any squashfs filesystems on the instance15:04
brainwaveChrisR: So there are no squashfs filesystems, but you are trying to prevent the module being loaded by the kernel?15:05
ChrisRyep15:05
ChrisRexactly15:05
brainwaveChrisR: the scanner expects to 'install' the squashfs itself? is that why you want it disabled?15:06
ChrisRbrainwave: the scanner expects this: modprobe -n -v squashfs    to return this: install squashfs /bin/true15:06
ChrisRI realize that's kind of dumb, but15:06
ChrisRsuch is the world of security scanners ;)15:07
brainwaveChrisR: lets first check if the module is loaded, currently15:07
ChrisRokay15:07
ChrisRbrainwave: would I see it under lsmod?15:10
wildc4rd[work]Good afternoon, after recommendations for getting remote desktop access to a ubuntu PC from a windows PC via internet15:10
brainwaveChrisR: Thats what Im confused about15:10
brainwaveChrisR: I know that squashfs support is enabled with a kernel switch, but I can't remember how to check for it15:11
brainwavebut technically it 'should' show if the module is loaded15:11
brainwaveBecause I see ext4 under my lsmod (on archlinux) and thats a filesystem15:12
hateballwildc4rd[work]: do you need a GUI?15:13
hateballwildc4rd[work]: otherwise just ssh15:13
littlejohnnygeirha, the last 2 errors say:  "failed to find session configuration default"  and "failed to create greeter session"15:14
wildc4rd[work]hateball, ideally, yes. I could just about scrape by with ssh, but other users are not as comfortable without the GUI15:14
hateballwildc4rd[work]: iirc Ubuntu has a builtin wizard for enabling VNC access15:15
hateballwildc4rd[work]: otherwise there are third party solutions like Chrome Remote Desktop15:15
geirhalittlejohnny: ah, so perhaps you need to install xfce4-session15:16
Mr_Panwildc4rd[work], teamviever ...15:16
littlejohnnygeirha, i checked xfce4-session is installed already15:16
geirhahm, but not set as default apparently15:16
brainwaveChrisR: I am signing off atm but heres my two cents, if its worth something15:17
wildc4rd[work]thanks hateball/Mr_Pan, I'll give those a go and see what happens15:17
geirhalittlejohnny: do you have anything in /usr/share/xgreeters/ ?15:18
brainwaveChrisR: You can either blacklist the module under /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf (path may be different)15:18
brainwaveChrisR: And to check if its being loaded as part of initramfs you can use mkinitcpio -v (shows which modules were pulled by which hooks. Squashfs would be pulled by filesystem hook for instance)15:19
brainwaveChrisR: Important thing is, after blacklisting modules by adding to modprobe.conf, rebuild your initramfs (look up on how to do this)15:20

kevrpeople keep pointing me in the direction of "gcc-arm-linux-gnueabi" on google, but it doesn't seem to exist20:57
kevralso20:57
kevri need to make sure that C++ cross compiles, not just C20:57
arorakevr: gcc-arm-linux-gnueabi does exist20:58

michael2hi can anyone tell me the difference between security.ubuntu.com and archive.ubuntu.com?21:43
swift110_sd card is not being read on ubuntu mate' whats going on21:43
michael2i.e. when I look at security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pools, I see a subset of packages21:43
dchapmanNot sure but right now I'm getting this when I try to update: The repository 'http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu vivid-security Release' does not have a Release file.21:44
michael2are security updates fetched from here - or is security.ubuntu.com just an alias to archive.ubutnu.com21:44
leftyfbmichael2: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu#Install_updates_from:21:45
leftyfbmichael2: https://askubuntu.com/questions/185317/are-security-ubuntu-com-updates-eventually-merged-into-normal-updates21:45
Bashing-om!vivid | dchapman21:45
ubottudchapman: Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) was the 22nd release of Ubuntu. Support ended on February 4, 2016. See !eol, !eolupgrade and https://ubottu.com/y/vivid21:45
kostkondchapman, vivid is not supported with updates anymore21:45
leftyfbvivid is not supported period21:46
dchapmanRight, I'm on 16.04. So I've got something in my apt list that's wrong?21:46
leftyfbcorrect21:46
kostkondchapman, pastebin it21:46
Neo1I installed server apache, put there wp site and links don't work http://test.american-chat.ru/2017/12/07/hello-world/21:49
dchapmankostkon: Found it at the top of the file. Heh, I'm trying to figure out how it got in there. Two lines for vivid. Mysterious.21:50
michael2leftyfb: great links, thanks. the links explain - conceptually - what distinguishes a package from security.ubunutu.com from archive.ubuntu.com . but im interested to know if these are physically different files or is securuty.ubuntu.comn packages essentially symlinks to the same package in archive.ubuntu.com?21:50
kostkondchapman, i'd call it that yeah21:50
leftyfbmichael2: they're different repositories21:51
michael2leftyfb: makes sense. so if the security maintainers patched say, libaudio package. they would add it to the security.ubuntu.com reoposity  and increment its version number so that the apt-cache policy would just naturaly select the version from security repo over version from main?21:57
ThedarkbI have a PC with a realtek wifi adapter and I need to install the right drivers without internet access.21:57
michael2an the fact they package exists in security repo is maintainers way of "announincing" this is a security patched package?21:58
leftyfbmichael2: I'm not exactly sure how that works. My guess is either that, or maybe the security repo is weighted higher in priority somehow21:58
michael2leftyfb: ok, thanks :)21:59
Thyriaeni just created a usb stick with unetbootin ( ubuntu 17.10 ) and booted to it - in the menu i chose "Install Ubuntu" ( however the other choices give same result ) - it says "error file /casper/vmlinuz.efi" not found and error: you need to load the kernel first22:08
Ben64Thyriaen: if you're on linux write the stick with dd, if you're on windows, find something that will directly write the iso to the stick, like dd does22:10
ThyriaenBen64, ok22:10
akikThyriaen: you can use rufus to do it, press alt-i once when rufus is open22:14
h4r1on my ubuntu system monitor, does 'memory' tab show physical memory usage of a process?22:17
h4r1'memory' column in the processes tab22:18
PigDudehi, I haven't set up dual boot w/ UEFI before, i installed xubuntu just now alongside a windows partition and while there's a UEFI-specific file in /etc/grub.d, I don't see Windows at startup22:24
PigDudei see some code in there that looks like it's meant to detect an OS... anybody have experience with this? at install i was warned about replacing some legacy bios setup with UEFI, so i declined that (the message mentioned Debian oddly)22:26
PigDude`update-grub` says it sees Windows, rebooting22:30
PigDudeasfdjasdljk why wouldn't the installer get that right :\22:31
PigDudeworks fine now22:31
PigDudeOK looks like i'm all set22:31
PigDudewow ive been using ubuntu for 11 years now22:31
Neo1who know can files of my server to be accessed by server sysadmin?22:56
Neo1it's VPS22:56
Ben64Neo1: yes22:56
Neo1Ben64: and he can change there something?22:57
Ben64Neo1: sure22:58
Neo1Ben64: but I read on digitalocean site there they say they when you change password they can't reach, What does it mean?22:59
Neo1Ben64: there written that your server can access only you and nobody else23:00
Neo1Ben64: can sysadmin access my files or not?23:01
scott_tamswhere are the files stored when they go to the nautilus recycle bin?23:13
scott_tamsMy roommate sent a file owned by root to the recycle bin and now he can't empty his recycle bin23:13
leftyfbscott_tams: ~/.local/share/Trash/files23:14
scott_tamsleftyfb, thank you very much23:19
Jordan_UNeo1: There is an important distinction between what employees can do and what they will do. There are almost certainly employees of digitalocean that can view and modify your files. I can't tell you which employees have that ability, and they probably have a policy that none of those employees will. But if you want to use a VPS provider you have to accept that they *can* do whatever they want to your23:20

compunerdThat's why I run my own rackmount server... Poweredge 2950 with 2 quad core xeons (3.2 GHZ), 48 gb RAM, and 8 SAS drives in RAID 6 (1.6 TB with hotswappable polarized drives so that it never has to be shutdown if one component fails... dual power supply on two different breakers from 2 different power accounts and backup internet connection from a neighbor... lol23:37
Neo1Who know how to install php 5.6 on ubuntu, now there 7.023:37
compunerdWhy not just use the tasksel program to install the whole LAMP server... sudo apt install tasksel23:38
compunerdthen sudo tasksel install lamp-server23:38
scott_tams Neol, most likely you can just use 7.0, it will probably work23:40
Neo1scott_tams: no, 5.6 will 100% work anywhere23:40
scott_tamscompunerd, it's nice that you can afford that but my $5/month production server will suit me just fine23:40
scott_tamsOh, you're developing for 5.6?23:41
compunerdscott-tams... I paid $31 for the entire thing...23:41
scott_tams:(23:42
scott_tamsI thought I got a good deal on my laptop....23:42
scott_tamsNeo1, you could download the deb package from a different OS than you're using. For example, I bet Debian Jessie is still on 5.6, or perhaps Ubuntu 16.04. Just download the .deb file from their site and install it.23:43
compunerdlol... I was working with an after school program that was getting the hardware through a program that requires all government agencies to offer old tech to educational institutions... we just had to pay shipping :P hehe23:44
scott_tamscompunerd, that's just not fair. Oh well, someday I'll have a decent rack.... (no pun intended lol)23:45
compunerdlol... the price on it has actually came down on ebay since I got mine... I've been seeing them for around $20023:46
bazhangcompunerd, scott_tams please take the chatter to #ubuntu-offtopic thanks23:47
compunerdMight have to buy a few additional components, but to get started it's not too bad23:47
compunerdAh, sorry23:47
scott_tamsbazhang, sorry23:49
compunerdNeo1: you could simply dowload the .deb for mysql5 and use dpkg to install, just make sure all dependencies are met...23:51
compunerdThat is if you just need a mysql server on the machine in question23:52
adrian_1908Doesn't the distro offer packages for old and cutting edge maybe? It sometimes does when there are version jumps.23:55
compunerdNeo1: https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/linux-installation-debian.html23:55
compunerdor actually... I think: sudo apt install php5 will do it for you23:56
