=== lynn_ is now known as gryphon [04:42] hey anyone here? [04:42] so i am installing lubuntu right now [04:42] i have a 500GB hard disk where i just installed windows 10 on a 80GB volume [04:42] created a 4GB partition (from the windows 10 setup) for swap [04:42] as the RAM is 4GB [04:43] and the rest of the space is for lubuntu [04:43] now should i go for ext4 or ext3 for the main lubuntu space? [04:43] ext4 [04:43] ex3 is really outdated [04:43] *ext3 [04:44] do i have to format it? [04:44] Plus, swap partitions aren't really recommended anymore over a certain amount of RAM and can even be insecure [04:44] what do i select as the mount point? [04:45] I'd *personally put /home on a separate parition then / as the main one, but for your setup you should be fine putting / in one partition [04:45] Yes, I'd format it [04:45] i heard that the swap partition needs to be the size of the RAM if hibernation feature is required [04:45] what's the benefit of putting /home on a separate partition? [04:45] Hibernation has been disabled as a security measure for a few releases now [04:46] If you're doing a fair bit of development it makes sure that if you have a lot of files in /home that your system is still usable if that fills up, plus you can easily do a reinstall and still have all your settings [04:47] hmmm i think that sounds like a good idea, how do i put /home separately? another partition? [04:48] Yep, just another partition [04:52] what sizes do you recommend for the partition? [04:52] I also do this on my systems, although on some systems with little RAM it isn't a good idea: http://blog.dustinkirkland.com/2016/01/data-driven-analysis-tmp-on-tmpfs.html [04:52] i have like 420GB in total for lubuntu [04:52] Whatever you feel comfortable with :) I'd usually put 50-100 GB for /home and the rest on / [04:52] and as for swap, it is now recommended to not have the swap partition at all? [04:52] Right [04:52] If you really want swap, this is the most secure way to do it: https://askubuntu.com/a/248558/334829 [04:52] what exactly is the security risk? that someone might be able to copy the swap contents and access everything on the RAM? [04:53] also, what do i choose in "Device for boot loaded installation [04:53] "? [04:55] is it /dev/sda? or the partition where i will install lubuntu (/dev/sda4) or the windows 10 partition (/dev/sda1)? [05:03] defenderoffreedo: Yep, someone can read the swap contentsp [05:04] Yeah /dev/sda [05:07] ok it's installing now [05:07] i have lubuntu on one other machine where i was testing it and need to uninstall it there [05:07] now lubuntu has the boot loader [05:08] so if i remove the lubuntu partition from windows, what will happen? [05:08] what will be the way to remove the lubuntu partition and just make it windows safely? [05:10] any idea? [05:13] wxl? ^^^^ [05:14] tl;dr tsimonq2 ? [05:14] @wxl, Dual boot Windows and Lubuntu [05:14] Partitioning [05:14] Fwd from defenderoffreedo: so if i remove the lubuntu partition from windows, what will happen? [05:14] Fwd from defenderoffreedo: what will be the way to remove the lubuntu partition and just make it windows safely? [05:14] :) [05:14] well afaik windows needs to be on there first [05:15] windows is real greedy [05:15] assuming the file system can handle expansion, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to grow after removing a partition [05:16] so i boot into windows, remove the lubuntu partition, format it to ntfs or something, and it should be okay? [05:16] and if it's uefi.. sheesh i don't know [05:16] i don't do windows [05:16] what happens after it boots? [05:17] anyway i finished installing lubuntu on this other machine [05:17] * wxl shrugs [05:17] it said installation finish you can restart [05:18] but on booting... windows 10 loads again [05:18] no option to go to lubuntu [05:18] ah yeah [05:18] welcome to uefi mode [05:18] you ideally wanted to have them set up with the same boot options [05:18] you basically have two options for booting: [05:18] 1. uefi boot [05:18] 2. legacy boot [05:19] it sounds like you have the former, but probably installed lubuntu as the latter [05:19] which means you'll need to toggle bios settings when you load up each OS [05:19] https://askubuntu.com/questions/221835/how-do-i-install-ubuntu-alongside-a-pre-installed-windows-with-uefi [05:19] it's an old machine, like 5 to 7 years old desktop so might not be uefi [05:19] read that. they know a lot more than i do [05:20] as i said, i don't do windows [05:44] i used this tool called easyBCD and now i'm booting into lubuntu [05:45] it showed me the lubuntu boot loader [05:45] and now i just see a black screen and the mouse cursor [05:45] is it loading? [05:45] it worked fine with the live usb boot [05:46] booted really really fast [05:46] installing on harddisk, i just see a blank screen [05:47] rebooting [05:48] looks like i'm in! [05:48] yay! [05:48] i see the desktop but it's not responding :( [05:49] the mouse cursor is moving but nothing happens if i click anywhere [05:50] any idea what could be going on? [05:50] it worked perfectly from the live usb [05:56] restarted again and it seems to be working but there seems to be some glitches with the graphics [05:57] ...and it's stuck again [08:42] hai question. menu > other is full of duplicates from other categories. i dont know how it got there or if it was always there, but how do i fix it.? === CompuDesktop is now known as Compu [15:04] what did happen here http://vpaste.net/lsFnP [15:52] hi, how do i fix or rebuild the menu? all my sound/video apps are duplicated in "Other" menu and theres wayyy to many thing to sift through. Also those generic ones like Xman, can i get rid of those? [15:54] arktvrvs: you can install a menu editor like alacarte to edit the menu [15:57] thanks, or I can use pcmanfm. I mainly want to know why/how it is trashed and how to prevent this in the future === LaserAllan is now known as Guest57528 [23:52] hey having issues connecting my ps3 sixaxis via bluetooth in 17.04 [23:53] anyone willing to help [23:53] yo [23:53] you using bluetoothctl? [23:56] lol hang on i think it's working forgot to connect it via usb first [23:57] let me configure my emulator now [23:59] yeah it works sorry
