=== Lengsdorfer is now known as Guest32100 [00:14] swap partition [00:15] qwererfrrthyty, Sorry I'm just now getting back to ya. U-MATE is the only one that locks up. I have Xubuntu on another partition. [00:15] and no problem [00:16] basilarchia, No video corruption or funny looking text at all when i boot. [00:20] I have Windows XP on another partition and it does not frizes ))) [00:21] why U.M frizes idont know [00:22] freezes [00:41] The GRUB loader is not confortable loader. I formatted the empty partition from Windows and grub already writes an error and cannot load any OS. I had to use USB iso to delete the formatted partition, to have GRUB working again. [00:41] grub2 [00:46] not comfortable [00:50] PlainDave, then it's hard to debug. You would have to setup something to catch the kernel parameters. Unfortunately, this is hard (a serial connection or a USB serial connection & another machine) [00:50] because it could simply be your memory is defective and is corrupting things. There are lots of reasons for it to crash, but on an older machine, that might be the problem [00:51] unfortunately there are not super easy ways of configuring a kernel from the GUI to set it to send the kernel messages out to another box (that I know about) and I don't have a good webpage to point you to for how to do that [00:51] Empty partition (no file system) [00:52] it's a common problem you are having, so I hope there is some effort to help new users debug that kind of instability in the future [00:53] basilarchia, Okay. I don't have an older machine, but a cheaper Dell with low resources. Like I say, Xfce runs flawlessly, but I love Ubuntu Mate. [00:54] Interesting. you will have to find a way to capture the kernel panic. You will need another machine hooked up to it. If you can ssh into it, that is a start. maybe the GUI is just crashing but the linux kernel is running fine. [00:58] Okay. Is there a way to reload MATE without rebooting? [01:00] I didn't mention that I'm running the 64-bit version. Maybe I should switch to the 32-bit? [01:01] when connected the NAS to any Ubuntu will read the NFS file system. I have screen savers off and power function set to never shut off. Anyone have a clue what else i can try [19:37] y0sh, after what amount of time it goes black? [19:38] havent check that yet been away but each time i come back the screens are black. [19:39] i need to set a timer and just wait and see [19:40] run: ls /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d | nc termbin.com 9999 [19:41] i dont have a xorg.conf.d [19:43] then run: ls /etc/X11 | nc termbin.com 9999 [19:43] http://termbin.com/oqgl [19:44] ok let's try a trick if you want [19:44] sure [19:44] run: sudo mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d [19:45] done [19:45] sudo touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-monitor.conf [19:46] ok [19:46] run: xrandr | grep " connected " | awk '{ print$1 }' >$HOME/xrandr | nc termbin.com 9999 [19:47] oh sorry, run only: xrandr | grep " connected " | awk '{ print$1 }' >$HOME/xrandr [19:48] done [19:49] ehh again, it was from an older script, run this: xrandr | grep " connected " | awk '{ print$1 }' [19:49] and paste here the output [19:49] HDMI-0 [19:49] DVI-0 [19:50] you got two outputs? [19:50] yes [19:50] you got two monitors? [19:50] yes [19:50] ok wait [19:52] msg diogenes_ have to run and get the kids from school will be back in about 10 minutes [19:52] ok [20:11] back [20:12] y0sh, gksu pluma /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-monitor.conf [20:12] done [20:13] do you have a blank file opened? [20:13] yup [20:13] now paste this: https://paste.ubuntu.com/26172205/ [20:14] pasted and saved [20:14] save the file and here is the thing, this trick works with a single monitor, I've never tried it with multiple monitors, so in case you reboot and you get a black screen then [20:14] remember [20:15] you must run: sudo rm -r /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d [20:15] and reboot again [20:15] ok thanks [20:15] of course you must run it in a tty by pressing ctrl+alt+f1 [20:16] now go ahead and reboot and see if it works [20:21] ok going to reboot will let you know [20:21] ok [20:28] stayed at a black screen for a few minutes then finished loading [20:29] ok so it booted fine [20:29] yes [20:29] now all you need is to wait and see [20:30] 1800 means that it will go blank in half an hour [20:31] ok thanks [20:31] yw [21:31] what do I type in the terminal to access hplip-gui?
