V7Is it possible to read a pipe and save it to a file ?00:56

V7but why ?00:57
V7Anyone ?01:00

Sean_McGhi, is here a good channel to ask about compiling a kernel?01:32
Sean_McGI'm having trouble getting a kernel build to complete, even when using the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel01:41
OrthoCubeHello. I'm sorry, I need help setting up the NVidia drivers. At first, I chose the proprietary driver, and restarted (Secure Boot is, of course, off). It works fine, Minecraft reports that it's running on the NVidia 940MX. But since this is a laptop, I opened nvidia-settings and on NVidia PRIME, I chose the integrated Intel HD graphics and restarted. No problems so far--until I wanted to activate the NVidia graphics again. Clicking on the NVidia X01:49
OrthoCubeServer Settings does nothing, while nvidia-settings says: "ERROR: Unable to find display on any available system". I have researched on this. It seems I'm on Wayland, but that shouldn't matter as it seems the latest NVidia drivers support Wayland. Also, the search results I get just point me to the Arch Linux wiki which doesn't tell how to solve this problem. Can anyone please help me, or at least point me to the right direction?01:49

Bashing-omOrthoCube: In the login box . I expect when you clik on the idon there to be a drop down to select the Xorg session .02:03
Bashing-omicon*02:04
OrthoCubeI may be a programmer, but I'm still pretty new to Linux. I have used it on an off more than 7 years (since 10.10) but I never used it for more than a week, so if I appear cluless, I'm sorry, because that's what I am XD Trying my best to learn, though. Thanks, I'll try :)02:04
Bashing-omOrphis: No shame .. We were all new at one time .. 'buntu is a constant process in learning .02:05
mentalitacan we all please file a bug in thunar? this is insane, this needs to be better02:06
OrthoCubeThanks, Bashing-om, nvidia-settings GUI appeared, allowing me to choose the GPU to run on. I'll try to activate the NVidia one.02:08
Bashing-omOrphis: K .. We here here to help . Try and see what works . Be aware 17.10 is a radical change from prior releases .02:09
OrthoCubeOMG I thought I won't be able to log in ever again XD Chose the NVidia GPU on nvidia-settings, logged out and back in, but the screen just turns black for a second, then shows the log-in screen again XD02:14
Bashing-omOrphis: Then all is now good ? No issue ?02:15
OrthoCubeFortunately, a restart let me log back in, and it seems I'm running on the discrete GPU right now... Hopefully switching it back to the integrated intel GPU works... *crosses fingers*02:16
OrthoCubeOkay, I was able to choose the integrated Intel graphics, although I had to *restart*, not log-out/log-in, since logging out then in reveals the same problem of not being able to log in. I'm fine with that, since restarts are fast on GNU/Linux, compared to where I came from LOL Thanks, Bashing-om :)02:23
Bashing-omOrthoCube: :) .. Keep in mind that if there are issues, see if they persist in the Xorg session . Then we can point fingers at wayland and go to work on wayland interfacing .02:25
OrthoCubeWell, I can't activate the NVidia GPU itself in Wayland, so I guess that's a problem XD For me, as long as X11 works, I don't really have any complaints.02:26
OrthoCubeI really just need to stop using Windows once and for all.02:26
Bashing-omOrthoCube: Ho kay .. give it some time and wayland will grow up . Growing pains :)02:27
OrthoCubeI will never say Windows sucks, but the way it works is so unoptimized. I'll use Linux if it means my hard disk won't be on 100% utilization while reading at 0.1MBPS (unlike some OS out there... LOL )02:28
OrthoCubeYep, I mean, I'm a programmer myself (or at least an aspiring one--I have never worked as a programmer, but that's what I plan to be soon. I know how hard developing software is, and I really appreciate the efforts the community does to improve GNU/Linux for all of us users.02:30
Bashing-omOrthoCube: .... :) .. chit chat in #ubuntu-offtopic . Here is stricly support for the operating system .02:32

Shawn|i7-720QMhowdy04:02
Shawn|i7-720QMwhy does ubuntu server hide system files in cli by default?04:02
Shawn|i7-720QMafter a fresh install04:02
rflemingShawn|i7-720QM: could you give an example?04:02
rflemingShawn|i7-720QM: there are hidden files with Ubuntu, just like Windows.  You can view them using la -a04:05
Shawn|i7-720QMis there a command to enable permanent view?04:05
Shawn|i7-720QMfor cli?04:05
rflemingon a server, there should be only 3 files in your home folder, a .profile, a .bash_rc and a .bash_history04:05
rflemingShawn|i7-720QM: yes, you can look in .bash_rc and set an alias that will always use -a04:06
rflemingthere already is a commented out example in the file04:06
Shawn|i7-720QMwhy is it not hidden in a full ubuntu distro?04:06
rflemingit is04:07
Mr_CyclopsShawn|i7-720QM, true as rfleming said, it is hidden, since hidden files start with a dot (.) ... but it still shows in the output of ls -l ... since the default bash profile is pre-set with an alias04:14
Mr_Cyclopscheck the output of "alias ls"04:14
Mr_Cyclopsto use a command without any set alias run it with a backslash in the beginning .... e.g. \ls04:15
Shawn|i7-720QMI have been using ls -a04:15
Mr_CyclopsThat will ignore all aliases04:15
Shawn|i7-720QMI'm used to lubuntu, they dont hide it in that04:15
Mr_CyclopsWell then -a will definitely show the hidden files, cause that is what it is supposed to be04:15
Mr_Cyclopsaah i see :)04:15
Mr_Cyclopsyeah well, diff distros/DEs, different aliases set up by default04:15
rflemingShawn|i7-720QM: there are so many superfluous files that keeping them hidden is helpful.04:16
rflemingShawn|i7-720QM: there's the use of aliases like la, and ll that help manage ls usage04:16
rflemingalias la='ls -A'04:21
rflemingalias ll='ls -la'04:21

superKillerdoes anybody else have the problem that ubuntu mate 17.10, the touchpad right click is interpreted as a left click ?06:22
mr_louLinux Kernel 103 is still as buggy as the previous ones (since 98): My Blu-ray burner isn't detected anymore. Works fine in kernel 97 and previous.06:26
superKillereven changing the orientation does not help06:32
alkisgmr_lou: if one kernel works and the next doesn't, it's a regression, and you should report it initially in launchpad and if it's an upstream one, to the kernel.org bug tracker as well: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Bugs#Reporting_Bugs_Upstream06:37
mr_louHm..06:39
mr_louI find that process very complicated, and I have bad experience filing such things myself.06:40
mr_louHm... "Ubuntu One"? I thought that closed long ago?06:42
alkisgmr_lou: ok, just don't expect someone to fix it for you if you don't report it06:43
alkisgIf some other person is affected and files it, maybe it will06:43
alkisgIn general, upstream bug trackers respond very well06:43
mr_loualkisg, Well I can boot with kernel 97. Just trying to help out.06:43
alkisgI didn't see Ubuntu One anywhere in that link06:43
mr_louSigning up at Launchpad: " I am a new Ubuntu One user"06:43
alkisgmr_lou: sure, but mentioning it in a forum where noone maintains the kernel is no help at all06:43
alkisgAh, that's to login, when you want to file a bug report at launchpad you need to login first06:44
alkisgAnd their login process was coupled with ubuntu one, and they didn't de-couple it yet06:44
mr_louhmkay06:44
mr_louSo I'm here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu06:51
mr_louAnd I click "Report a bug", but is just taken to a 50 mile long text, rather than somewhere I can report a bug.06:51
alkisgDid you start with "ubuntu-bug linux" as https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Bugs#Reporting_Bugs_Upstream says?06:52
mr_louYes, tried that. But the initial popup doesn't seen to contain anything about what the bug is. Didn't wanna press Send.06:53
mr_louIt's like you gotta be a whizkid to report bugs. I know from experience that I can easily spend half a day just trying to report this. And when/if I finally manage to do so, I will have selected or written something wrong in the report, rendering it invalid. I tried this when creating "tickets" for VLC. Never wasting my time like that again.06:56
mr_louThere has to be some easier way of helping out.06:56
mr_louIf not, then sorry, I can't help.06:57
alkisgmr_lou: well, if you can't get involved with bug reporting, there's internationalization, helping people in trying out ubuntu, etc etc06:57
alkisgNo worries though not everyone is required to help06:57
mr_louI'm helping local people with Ubuntu.06:57
alkisgCool06:58

mr_louWell I did already. I know that booting with Kernel 97 fixes my problem.07:06
mr_louSo of course that's just what I do.07:07

stevenmok weird bug (in progress)... i've dragged and dropped some text from a text editor to a terminal - and the text is just floating in the middle and my mouse is stuck in the cursor mode of dragging and won't click07:34
stevenmluckily i can still type/switch windows etc... with keyb only.07:35

penguinator_You could paste it in a file manager, then from a terminal go to the file you pasted, and retrieve the text. Fixing the issue, no idea.07:36
stevenmnah its stuck - its not a normal copy/paste - its me dragging text07:36
stevenmi think the text editor has crashed but i don't want to kill it in case of unsaved work :S07:37

stevenmmr_lou, pretty sure they both do07:40
stevenmoh that kinda thing - not sure07:40
penguinator_Maybe kill terminal since that's what is holding your mouse in place. If you dragged it then I guess there's a good chance it wont be in the text editor. Also, you said it may have crashed.07:40

JoeRWI desperately need some help to fix this as my entire desktop is essentially useless at the moment.08:11
alkisgJoeRW: "started the daemon" => but wasn't it already started? You can't have a session without dbus running, and you can't really restart dbus while other programs are using it afaik08:11
alkisgAnd why did you change the permissions in the first place?08:11

alkisgJoeRW: ok, you can safely delete that folder while logged off, and it will be recreated with correct permissions on the next login08:13
alkisgJoeRW: the settings are in another folder, in dconf, not related to dbus08:13
JoeRWI did that, and the desktop is still gone.08:13

hatch789I have searched on packages.ubuntu.com and found the libcudart in a package but not sure if it's the .so.8.0 one that I need ...or if it's a more generic (runtime) version of that library20:32
AzulflameI'm in the camp of "install it and see", and remove it if it isn't the right version20:34
brainwashhatch789: try this https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/963814/cuda-8-libcudart-error/20:34

boffinI recently lost a tablet and it is time to upgrade my laptop. I would love to have a surface like device that runs ubuntu.21:25
EriC^^some tablets work, there are guides online on how to get them running ubuntu21:26
EriC^^they usually involve getting it to boot with uefi 32bit, it works though21:26
boffinto be fair I am really really bad at that. For example my current laptop, a dell xps14 I have been unable to make the touchpad work.21:27
boffinAnd of course dell sells the xps13 with ubuntu on it.21:27
boffinI was sad to see they quit making the 14.21:27
jhutchins_wkboffin: Touchscreen Linux really isn't there yet.21:42
jhutchins_wkboffin: At least not a full tablet-like interface (that I've seen or heard of).21:42
boffintouchpad not touchscreen. And I have seen some impressive touch stuff for gnome.21:45
nicomachusjhutchins_wk: #ubuntu-touch would disagree with you.21:47
louvetvicenteI am trying to setup VNC to control an existing X server session, instead of creating a new desktop session when someone connects to the server.. is there a tutorial for how to do this?21:52
louvetvicenteThe effect I want is basically what Teamviewer does, allows remote control of a computer, instead of allowing multiple sessions for the same computer (like remote desktop would do)21:53
jhutchins_wklouvetvicente: That is possible with most VNC servers, but difficult to set up on some.  xvnc can do it.21:57
jhutchins_wklouvetvicente: I believe it's usually called "shared session".21:57
jhutchins_wklouvetvicente: Sometimes it's disabled in the build.  Depends on the server.21:58
louvetvicentejhutchins_wk, thank you I will look into it.. I don't mind building from source.. but I rather find something in the apt repos21:58
jhutchins_wklouvetvicente: What is the reason for the remote GUI?21:58
louvetvicentejhutchins_wk, I am trying to allow limited access to updating some kiosk computers that were previously running ChromeOS (now running Gallium)21:59
louvetvicenteupdating as in changing what is displayed on the screen21:59
