daddesioHi all, can somebody recommend a good IRC app for Android?00:08
Kon[m]daddesio: Atomic is the least offensive, lightweight, and is on F-Droid00:20
AnticomHi. I'm trying to build a project. Now i get the error that the linker can't find -lz. I've searched for libz-dev etc. but couldn't find anything. Which package do i actually need?00:20
daddesioKon[m]: Thank you so much. Anyway, I'm in a hurry, so I picked one of the first ones I saw on the Play Store. But thanks for your suggestion. :)00:21
daddesioI picked AndroIRC00:21
AnticomIs it zlibc?00:23
OnkelTemhi folks00:27
OnkelTemI have some crap in my /etc/resolv.conf created be NetworkManager00:27
OnkelTembut name resolution works!00:28
OnkelTemHow that could happen?00:28
deemAnticom: there is a package called "zlib1g-dev"00:29
OnkelTemFolks00:31
OnkelTemDoes anyone run Kubuntu 17.x?00:31
OnkelTemplease would you pastebin the files you have in /etc/resolvconf ?00:32
OnkelTemCuz I have a feeling that something screwed up my system00:32
OnkelTemAnd I can ping hosts but I can't dig them!00:32
Anticomdeem: hm there is. I've installed libz-dev (although it apt show libz-dev didn't tell me anything useful it was installable)00:34
Jordan_Uylwghst: If by "Gnome 3" you mean GNOME Shell, then no. It's not possible to use Gnome Shell with Compiz as the compositor, shell, and window manager are all bound together (the same way that Unity 7 is bound to Compiz). If you want to use all of the GNOME3 apps while using compiz as your window manager you can do that though.00:35
JeevesMossis there software that will average out the inputs from three GPS units?00:37
davecorebipolar: good to hear. Thanks for reporting the issue in the first place!01:11
ylwghstJordan_U: the whole environemnt is called Gnome 3... Gnome shell application is part of the whole environemnt.01:24
ylwghstJordan_U: I wasn't asking if I can use compiz within Gnome 3. There was someone asking for help and he stated he uses Compiz within gnome3...01:25
ylwghstI was just like gnome 3 with compiz? o really? wtf?01:26
codedmartI installed Pulse Secure Connect client which I needed to install libwebkitgtk-1.0.0. Anyone know how I can scale that on my HiDPI monitor? It is the only app that open super small?01:27
ylwghstJordan_U: another part of whole gnome 3 stack is mutter which is the compositor deeply integrated with the other software...01:27
LeevancleefOn a similar topic, why is Wayland supposed to be better than X11?01:31
ylwghstLeevancleef: I don't now much about details but the Xorg works as server applications which runs and has libraries to work with your hardware...01:32
kk4ewtLeevancleef, google the difference01:33
LeevancleefBeen there, done that, kk4ewt. Thanks for spending your time writing that helpful suggestion.01:35
ylwghstWayland it's just protocol - a set of rules and libraries to work with the hardware which can be used by other applications.01:35
LeevancleefYeah, my impression is that Wayland is supposed to remove a step from the process, but it's somewhat arcane to me01:38
ylwghstFrom the Wayland project on Github:01:38
ylwghstwell its here https://github.com/wayland-project/wayland01:39
ylwghstthe compositor can acts like the server by its self and can communicate with clients - apps01:40
ylwghstIt's working much more better on my system. I always had problems with tearing on Xorg, there's no way to completely tear free experience. On wayland the issue is completely gone. The performance of my GPU is also much more better on wayland ( i currently use nouveau which has very poor performance but much better on Wayland ).01:45
ylwghsthttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X.Org_Server#/media/File:The_Linux_Graphics_Stack_and_glamor.svg01:49
Leevancleefylwghst, that's good news for those of us on Nvidia01:51
ylwghstI just wonder what will be with nvidia's proprietary drivers.02:00
k_szeHow do I get Ubuntu to load the proprietary nvidia drivers from the graphics-drivers PPA when the NVIDIA card is not the primary display card?02:03
k_szeI have the drivers installed, but they are currently not loaded (lsmod does not list them)02:03
ylwghstk_sze: look for Bumblebee02:04
k_szeIn fact, currently, if I run `sudo modprobe nvidia_387`, I get "modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'nvidia_387': No such device"02:06
k_szeIs that even normal?02:06
k_sze`lspci` *does* list my card though.02:06
ylwghstk_sze: try sudo modprobe nvidia02:07
k_szeylwghst: same02:07
ylwghstare you talking about laptop right?02:08
k_szeno, desktop.02:08
k_szeMaybe I just need to reboot it. :/02:11
ylwghstwhich kernel ?02:11
k_szeLinux m-desktop 4.13.0-17-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Mon Nov 6 10:04:08 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux02:13
k_szeAnd this machine doesn't have UEFI Safeboot enabled02:13
k_szeSo I don't need the uefi driver signing steps.02:14
ylwghstdoes 387 work with 4.13?02:14
ylwghstcould you try NVIDIA 384.59 instead ?02:14
bemonew to ubuntu 14.04 (pre-installed at work) and having an odd problem -- not sure what I did, but the background image I had previously selected seems to have become illusive (if I use <ctrl>-<alt>-<down_arrow>, I can see it, but if I select any of the desktops, it disappears again).02:16
cfochhello02:18
cfochI am using Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS  (server) in QEMU02:18
bemo(I had previously had a problem with no icons or folders showing up either, and following these instructions fixed it: https://askubuntu.com/questions/893233/ubuntu-desktop-folders-icons-and-files-are-not-visible)02:19
cfochI want to connect to my virtual machine via ssh but for some reason the IP of my virtual machine does not work02:19
cfochany idea?02:19
ylwghstcfoch: why are you on 14.04?02:19
cfochbecause I have a software that only works in Ubuntu 14.0402:20
t0no6acfoh : you need a bridge network02:20
ylwghsto sorry it was for bemo02:20
ylwghstbemo: why are you on 14.04?02:20
bemo(worked great for a while, and then something I did seems to have triggered the background to disappear again -- though I can still see icons and and folders)02:20
bemoylwghst: because that's what they support at my work... :-|02:20
bemoand figured I'd ask the experts before I ask *them* for help.  :)02:21
ylwghstbemo:  try this02:21
ylwghstfeh --bg-fill /path/to/image.file02:21
t0no6acfoch : https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/how-to-create-bridge-interface-ubuntu-linux/02:21
bemoylwghst: do I need to install "feh"?02:21
ylwghstprobably yes02:22
aloo_shubemo which desktop env?02:22
bemoI was using one of the stock images -- happen to know where they are?02:22
bemoprobably a silly question, but... how do I know which desktop?    oh, wait... lightdm?02:23
aloo_shuat /usr/share/???02:23
ylwghstthey should be in /usr/share/background02:23
bemopstree shows "lightdm" with a "cinamon-launch"... as a child (and a bunch of others)02:24
aloo_shuwhere ??? may be background/ , wallpaper/02:24
aloo_shucinnamon then02:24
ylwghstbemo:  sorry it;s02:24
ylwghst/usr/share/backgrounds02:24
Leevancleefylwghst, I've continued reading up on the Wayland situation, and it seems any performance increase is limited to Nouveau. OpenGL seems totally unsupported in Wayland with Nvidia's proprietary drivers, which for better or worse do offer superior performance to Nouveau.02:25
Leevancleefhttps://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2017/10/plasmawayland-and-nvidia-2017-edition/02:25
bemoylwghst: feh --bg-fill /usr/share/backgrounds/gnome/Road.jpg02:25
ylwghstLeevancleef: definitely02:25
bemostill shows a generic background (not the roads background)02:25
cfocht0no6a: I have to do that in the VM right?02:26
bemoaloo_shu: not sure if that answered your question on the desktop02:26
aloo_shuusually right click on empty desktop space shows options like set image02:26
LeevancleefI also think this division on Wayland compatibility will also hurt Nouveau by furthering the rift between FOSS driver developers and the Nvidia team02:26
bemoaloo_shu: it does, and I've selected different images -- nothing happens  (which is different behavior from what I was seeing earlier today, where it would slowly fade from one background image to another)02:27
aloo_shuthere could be something in workspaces settings, too, like use same/different background per workspace aka virtual desktop, bemo02:28
aloo_shuor a setting if you have slideshow or single image02:29
aloo_shuor both02:29
bemostill poking around -- not seeing anything obvious02:29
ylwghstbemo: anyway would be good to update your ubuntu to 16.0402:30
bemo(and as far as I know -- I didn't *change* anything to make it behave differently -- it *feels* like it was a side-effect of me trying to drag a nautilus icon to chrome.02:30
bemoylwghst: okay, was hoping that wasn't the solution... :)02:30
bemothanks02:30
t0no6acfoch : no, on the host02:31
ylwghstbemo: well it's not a good solution to your problem but if you do not rely on something really specific there is no reason to stay on 14.04 which isn't supported nowadays...02:32
cfocht0no6a: I have Fedora on the host :-/ is it the best place to ask?02:32
bemothink I'll try the previous "dconf reset" solution I had tried before, since that fixed a tangentially similar problem earlier this morning.02:32
bemoylwghst: it's a build system and our internal folks haven't blessed a newer version of ubuntu yet (though I think they're still working on it)02:33
ylwghstLeevancleef: and no CUDA computations with nouveau..02:33
ylwghstbemo:  I see02:33
bemoylwghst: thanks for the help!02:33
bemoaloo_shu: thanks to you as well... off to go see if I can break something now02:34
pauljwbemo, 14.04 is supported until 2019.  whatever you did, you should be able to fix without upgrading which can bring a whole lot of other issues with it.02:34
aloo_shubemo you haven't played with running a graphical session as root, have you?02:34
bemoaloo_shu: no02:34
bemopauljw: it's a "silly" thing to be worrying about on a work computer, since it's functioning normally otherwise.02:34
ylwghstok02:34
bemoanyway, let me try this solution again, and see if it helps:  https://askubuntu.com/questions/893233/ubuntu-desktop-folders-icons-and-files-are-not-visible02:35
bemobe back in a bit...02:35
pauljwunderstand bemo, i wouldn't lose sleep over it, just keep looking for an answer.02:35
bemopauljw: thanks.02:36
ylwghstpauljw: bemo: but 14.04 doesn't uses Compiz or ?02:37
ylwghsthe is reseting /org/compiz/ key02:38
bemoylwghst: <shrug> what I do know is that when I couldn't see things I was dropping on my desktop with nautilus, I tried that, and it fixed my problem.02:38
bemobe back in a few... will let you know if it helped.  :)02:38
aloo_shusome DEs implement compiz features02:39
aloo_shuso maybe use keys02:39
aloo_shuor it was some side effect02:39
ylwghstoh wait02:40
ylwghstheis on cinnamon right02:40
bemoylwghst: yes02:40
bemoylwghst: ... just about to "shutdown -r now"... any new insights?  :)02:41
ylwghstbemo: kill -9 -1 should be enough02:41
aloo_shuno more insights after that02:41
bemoylwghst: okay... doing it now  ;-)02:41
cfochmay be something just blocking my connection to the virtual machine IP?02:43
LogicalDashI have an 8bitdo FC30 Pro controller. I made a udev rule for it, and when I plug it in, an event for it shows up in the system log; but I don't find an actual device file for it afterward. How can I troubleshoot this?02:43
ylwghstbemo: dconf reset -f /org/nemo/02:45
ylwghstbemo: this should revert your nemo settings02:46
ylwghsti mean02:47
ylwghstdconf reset -f /org/nemo/02:47
bemowas it the dconf command or the reboot?  not sure... but it's working again.02:47
bemothanks for the help.02:47
ylwghstwho nows :-)02:47
ylwghstkill -9 -1 only logs you out of your session02:47
bemo"kill -9 -1" eventually rebooted my machine... after some complaints from some Modem somethin' or other...02:48
ylwghststrange..02:48
bemoI did eventually try ctrl-alt-delete while waiting for about 30 second with no activity... so maybe *that* rebooted it02:48
bemoanyway, thanks again for the help -- time to go eat.  :)02:49
bemo<wave> cya02:49

lotuspsychjeR0b0t1: i never said you cant get any help here07:22

EriC^^Exterminador: boot a live usb to trouble shoot07:36
hateballExterminador: iirc I've seen others with the same problem, that Windows murders the bootloader. I think EriC^^ knows these things, so hang around til he is here maybe07:36

ubottuEriC^^: Wow! You're such a great helper, you deserve a cookie!07:36
EriC^^:D07:36
Exterminadorerm, I must see if I still have a usb with Ubuntu or Xubuntu07:38
EriC^^Exterminador: if you're getting grub rescue, it means you still have grub somewhere so its likely a efi install, and since you're getting grub rescue it means it cant find either efi/...grub.cfg or it cant find the /boot/grub files (which would be the worst case, especially if you dont have a separate /boot)07:39
EriC^^likely windows nuked the linux rootfs, try typing "ls" in grub rescue>07:41
Exterminadorgot this https://usercontent.irccloud-cdn.com/file/f3WWvQWS/irccloudcapture1819509855.jpg07:43
EriC^^Exterminador: that looks good07:44
EriC^^it's a msdos install07:44
EriC^^Exterminador: try ls (hd0,msdos4)/07:45
V7is it possible to achieve something like this:07:45
EriC^^i mean msdos307:45
V7killall --ppid $$ calc ?07:45
V7Is it possible to kill all subprocesses with specified names (not pids)07:45

EriC^^Exterminador: try also ls (hd0,msdos5)/07:47
Exterminadorthe (hd0,msdos5)/ also gave the same error07:49
EriC^^Exterminador: does echo $prefix show anything?07:50
Exterminadorit says: `echo (hd0,msdos7)/boot/grub`>07:52
EriC^^Exterminador: aye07:52
EriC^^i think windows nuked your rootfs07:52
rainbowwarriorhi, where can i get skype or alterntivie for ubuntu 17.10?07:52
EriC^^Exterminador: make a live usb and come back here, your best best is that it just deleted the partition and you can restore it easily07:53
ExterminadorEriC^^: okay. I think I have the Xubuntu USB somewhere in the drawer.07:54
EriC^^k07:54
alkisgrainbowwarrior: in the skype web site, there's a .deb you can download07:55
Exterminadorfound it && booting into it07:58

EraserPencilI have keyed in the titles and url to github and github.com respectively. But when I use github credentials to log in to other websites, like git kraken or something they dont work08:02
ducasseEraserPencil: there's a scripted thingy based on rofi and pass that looked really good, but it depends on your workflow...08:03

EriC^^Exterminador: ok, try sudo umount /mnt && sudo mount /dev/sda6 /mnt && cat /mnt/etc/issue09:16
rocketeerWhen they're not working, xinput --list won't list the ones that are not working, and they'll also be missing from /proc/bus/input/devices09:17
EriC^^alkisg: this was his old pt before testdisk http://termbin.com/ea9i09:17
ExterminadorEriC^^: same output tho09:18
EriC^^he did have missing space (good spot btw), but nothing really 'unusual'09:18
EriC^^Exterminador: ok, good, so the locations of the partitions are correct right now09:18
alkisgExterminador: do you remember having another partition, that testdisk may discover now if you run it again?09:18
EriC^^type sudo umount /mnt09:18
Exterminadordone09:19
alkisgEriC^^: maybe tell him to run debsums in a chroot to verify disk/package integrity?09:19
EriC^^alkisg: this was testdisk's last output before we wrote the new pt https://www.irccloud.com/pastebin/OtWIu8pS/09:19
EriC^^alkisg: i think only the partition table was deleted09:19
EriC^^we could try to see if there's a fs in the missing space09:20
alkisgSometimes testdisk finds wrong sizes etc though, so the new partition table may be different to what he had before the issue09:20
EriC^^Exterminador: try sudo mount -o offset=$((407539711 * 512)) /dev/sda /cdrom && ls /cdrom09:20
alkisgHeh, nice trick that one with /cdrom :D09:21
EriC^^yeah comes in handy :D09:21
EriC^^Exterminador: sorry typo09:21
EriC^^Exterminador: try sudo mount -o offset=$((407539712 * 512)) /dev/sda /cdrom && ls /cdrom09:22
EriC^^Exterminador: you possibly need to chroot now and run update-grub that's why you're still getting grub rescue> the partition numbering in $prefix changed09:23
Exterminadorhttps://www.irccloud.com/pastebin/9AAWCfbc/09:23
EriC^^Exterminador: try the mount offset, we'll fix grub, then try seeing if there's some missing fs in that space like we did earlier09:23
EriC^^Exterminador: which one is your main os, ubuntu or xubuntu?09:24
Exterminadorusually was Xubuntu09:25
EriC^^Exterminador: ok try ls /mnt/home and try to figure out if its the xubuntu one09:25
Exterminadornope. it's the Ubuntu one. only 2 users. Xubuntu had 309:26
EriC^^Exterminador: ok, type sudo umount /mnt && sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt09:26
Exterminadordone09:27
EriC^^Exterminador: for i in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys /run; do sudo mount -B $i /mnt$i; done09:27
Exterminadordone09:27
EriC^^Exterminador: sudo chroot /mnt09:28
EriC^^then "grub-install --recheck /dev/sda && update-grub"09:28

EriC^^that's ubuntu09:30
EriC^^xubuntu is already found09:30
Exterminadoroh09:31
Exterminadorlast time it was on sda7, the Ubuntu09:31
EriC^^Exterminador: yeah no worries09:32
EriC^^Exterminador: you have 130gb of space that's unallocated right now09:32
Exterminadoruh.. how to solve that?09:32
EriC^^we could search for any missing filesystems, or if you're sure you have everything already, you could just create a partition and use the space somehow09:32
Exterminadorperhaps better check, just in case?09:33
EriC^^Exterminador: try "sudo mount /dev/sda6 /mnt && cat /etc/fstab /mnt/etc/fstab | nc termbin.com 9999"09:34
Exterminadormount: /mnt: /dev/sda6 already mounted on /mnt.09:35
geodb27People : hi ! I'm struggling with the install of my new laptop under kubuntu. On my old one, I was using quasselcore with a postgresql database. I've migrated the old database to my new laptop, however, quasselcore doesn't seem to be abble to use postgresql database driver. What package am I missing do use it as I want ?09:35

EriC^^Exterminador: ok, first things first, try rebooting and see how it goes09:37
Exterminadorokay09:37
Exterminadordoing that now09:37
Exterminadorit found Ubuntu, Ubuntu 17.10 and Windows 1009:41
ExterminadorUbuntu 17.10 seems to be Xubuntu09:41
EriC^^is that what you wanted?09:42
Exterminadorconfirmed. 17.10 is Xubuntu and booted successfully and all apps & users are there. I'll try Ubuntu now and so on. I'll report back any errors/issues that I may found09:43
ExterminadorEriC^^: how can I see if it's Xubuntu or Ubuntu dealing with the bootloader?09:45
EriC^^Exterminador: not sure you can09:47
Exterminadoris that right now the boot menu appears with a purple (?) background and before it was a black one. I suppose now it's Ubuntu dealing with it09:47
EriC^^yeah09:48
Exterminadorso anything I must use grub customizer on Ubuntu and not in Xubuntu09:48
EriC^^boot into the one you want as the main os, an run sudo grub-install /dev/sda && sudo update-grub and you should be good09:48
Exterminadoroh, okay then. I'll try it now tho09:49
Exterminadorall seems to be working fine. still need to check windows09:49
Exterminadorlet's see what happens now. Windows says: Working on updates 34%09:52
ExterminadorROFL. let's see if it breaks stuff again09:52
ExterminadorI'll give feedback as soon as Window$ have finished with the updating09:54
edulixhello people. Maybe someone can know why some packages have disappeared from the archives? for example in http://ftp.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu/pool/universe/p/python-pip/ there's no python3-pip_1.5.6-5ubuntu2_all.deb anymore, only an older version (1.5.4)09:54
edulixand also much newer versions09:55
Exterminadorthanks for all the help provided EriC^^. 😃09:58
EriC^^Exterminador: no problem :)09:59
ExterminadorI'll save the logs of this issue for future reference also. can be useful later on09:59
alkisgedulix: packages.ubuntu.com/python-pip10:05
alkisgThose are the packages that are needed in the archive10:06
alkisgThe others are obsolete and are removed from the mirrors10:06
edulixalkisg: 1.5.6 is obsolete but 1.5.4 is not? I don't understand. I mean for trusty. it just disappeared10:06
alkisgedulix: right, 1.5.6 could be for 14.10, so when it went EOL, it was removed10:07
edulixalkisg: I see thanks10:07
alkisgnp10:07
edulixalkisg: is there any way I can check that?10:07
alkisgClick on each package, it will get you the publication history10:07
alkisgedulix: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/trusty/+source/python-pip10:08
alkisgCheck "releases in ubuntu", those are for trusty only10:08
alkisgAnd similar for the other releases10:08
ducasse!info python3-pip trusty | edulix10:09
ubottuedulix: python3-pip (source: python-pip): alternative Python package installer - Python 3 version of the package. In component universe, is optional. Version 1.5.4-1ubuntu4 (trusty), package size 78 kB, installed size 437 kB10:09
alkisgedulix: see also for vivid, the 1.5.6 you were looking for: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/vivid/+source/python-pip10:10
edulixalkisg: so those packages are not anywhere anymore right?10:10
alkisgedulix: there are in launchpad, but not in the mirrors10:10
alkisgSo you can download the .debs, but not use an apt repository10:10
edulixalkisg: oh awesome10:10
alkisgedulix: so e.g. if you follow the clicks, you end up to the deb here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/python-pip/1.5.6-5ubuntu2/+build/708321310:11
edulixalkisg: where did you click to go from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/vivid/+source/python-pip to there?10:11
alkisgReleases in Ubuntu => 1.5.6-5ubuntu210:12
alkisgThen        Builds                Vivid:                                     amd6410:12
edulixthanks alkisg10:13
alkisgnp10:13
alkisgedulix: note that some dependencies may not be satisfied if you try to install a .deb from 14.10 to 14.04, resulting in broken apt10:14
edulixalkisg: thanks10:14

jojanttihi! is there a way to use regex in aptdcon package installation? i tried this:  " yes | sudo aptdcon --hide-terminal --install ^libxcb.* "10:48
jojanttii also tried escaping the special characters and adding single quotes10:48
mnbvcxzjojantti: escape your ass10:49
Ben64can do it with apt10:49
jojanttiBen64: yeah but i would like to use aptdcon if it's possible in any way10:50
Ben64why10:50
jojanttiBen64: because when done in a shell script apt-get sometimes fails to a lock that is in use after apt update. i would have to create a sleep loop for the lock to release and that is not something i want to do.10:52
alkisgjojantti: you can query with apt and execute with aptdcon10:53
alkisgI.e. ask apt with regex, then use the result on aptdcon10:53
N3X15If you're using a shell script, you might want to consider using the python bindings for apt, as well.10:53
N3X15Or the language of your choice.10:54
jojanttialkisg: hmm thanks, i will have to see if that could be done in a sensible manner in the script10:54
jojanttiN3X15: i need to stick to just bash in this task10:55

xtronEriC^^, are you getting me, what I wanna say?14:32
EriC^^xtron: yeah14:34
EriC^^xtron: what happens if from ssh you try "sudo login root" and try to login14:35
EriC^^or just "login root"14:35
xtronEriC^^, yeah now it has problem <unable to get valid context for root>14:37
xtron<cannot make/remove an entry for the specific session>14:37
victorbjelkholmso I think my python installation somehow is borked... Getting "SyntaxError: Missing parentheses in call to 'print'" when running "system-config-printer-applet" for example. The beginning of `applet.py` starts with "#!/usr/bin/python3". Anyone have any pointers what could be wrong?14:39
victorbjelkholm"/usr/bin/python3 --version" returns "Python 3.5.2" which seems fine. Or is it not?14:40
EriC^^xtron: no idea, seems like some pam stuff, try asking in ##Linux14:40
xtronEriC^^, can you tell me, is it some thing related to permission of "sh"14:42
victorbjelkholmchanged manually to python2, and now getting "SyntaxError: invalid syntax" instead. So seems this program was written for a different version of python than 2 or 3. I'm missing something here14:42
xtronI want to figure out the difference of SSH and non-SSH way,14:43
victorbjelkholmhm, seems there was a python package that broke everything. Ran "sudo pip3 uninstall gi" and now it seems solved.14:43
EriC^^xtron: the permissions look fine14:47
EriC^^xtron: it might be something related to pam authentication and stuff like that14:47

yommHi,  did a fresh Ubuntu 16,04 install. After installing I plugged in an external USB drive. Now, on boot, whenever that external USB drive is NOT attached my system boots into rescue/maintenance mode. Any hints ?18:19
ioriayomm, what you did with that usb drive ?18:20
yommIoria: nothing much. It is an older drive with sound samples on it, I just auto mounted it via xfce4/thunar18:21
ioriayomm, using xubuntu ?18:22
yommWell I did a minimal ubuntu cd install with minimal xfce4 desktop18:22
ioriayomm, maybe not unmounted correctly18:23
ioriayomm try a fsck from recovery18:24
geniiThere was probably an update-grub run while the drive was plugged in and an entry was made for it. Boot up with it plugged in, then unplug it and run: sudo update-grub18:25

ioriayomm, could you paste it, please ?18:39

yommAh great tip genii thank you, ioria: paste coming up !18:41
yomm/dev/sdc1 /home/yomm/Mountpnt/2TB ntfs    defaults    0   218:41
Jordan_Ugenii: Running update-grub with an external drive plugged in should never lead to a configuration where you'll only get a grub shell at boot if that drive doesn't exist. It should just lead to a menuentry existing, and that menuentry won't work if you select it and the drive it corresponds to is not available.18:42
ioriayomm, so, you had attached two different usb drives ?18:42
ioriayomm, and the previous one set in fstab and then unplugged ?18:43
yommI guess the problem was both USB drives are NTFS and the system got 'confused'18:43
Jordan_Uyomm: You should always use UUIDs (or labels) in /etc/fstab and other configuration files when referring to volumes. There is no guarantee that the linux kernel will enumerate drives the same way. What was sdb today might be sdc tomorrow. If you're actively plugging in and removing drives then what was sdb 5 minutes ago might be sde now.18:44
geniiJordan_U: When the system sees the external as HD(0) it sure does.18:44
quartershello. in the process of recovering a partition using testdisk, when writing to the partition table, my luks was converted to an ntfs partition with testdisk. I was wondering how I can convert this partition back to a luks partition18:44
yomm2 USB drives, 1 in fstab, 1 not. When I unplugged the one that wasn't in fstab I got the rescue mode boot18:44
ioriayomm, you can get the rescur mode, when you set something in fstab that , after, the system is unable to find ....18:44
quartersI had tried to use gdisk's "t" (change partition type) option, but it's still showing up as an ntfs partition in gparted and testdisk18:45
ioriayomm, if so, it's all clear18:45
Jordan_Ugenii: Do you have a bug report for this? Are you possibly thinking of grub-install rather than update-grub?18:45
ioriayomm, it's my opinion, but external/removable device should not be in fstab18:46
yommJordan, like dev rules ?18:46
yomm*udev18:46
geniiJordan_U: It happened at least a couple times now. Booted to internal, plugged external in and forgot about it while updates ran. Not sure if any updates ran grub-install, possibly. But the system ended up unbootable because it kept looking for adrive that didn't exist.18:47
Jordan_Ugenii: Any upgrade to grub packages themselves will re-run grub-install. That still shouldn't result in a system that depends on an external drive obviously, but there are more hairy corner cases relating to automated grub-installs than with update-grub. If that does happen to you again please do file a bug report and subscribe me to it (JordanU on launchpad).18:50

Richard_CavellHello everyone19:12
Richard_CavellMay I ask people this: Is there really a benefit to being on an LTS release?  I'm on 16.04 and I worry that I don't have the latest versions of everything. Yet there are still bugs, and constant updates.19:12
R0b0t1Richard_Cavell: How capable are you as an administrator19:13
R0b0t1Richard_Cavell: I found I needed to switch to Gentoo because often the packages in Ubuntu's repositories were not sufficiently new19:14
tomreynThere is no software without bugs. The constant updates are either bug or security fixes, you want them if you care about your and other people's (and your and their data's) safety19:14
lordcirth_workRichard_Cavell, LTS is not so much about "less bugs", though there tends to be, as about less breaking changes.19:14
R0b0t1The only way to get newer packages in a lot of cases is to compile it yourself19:14
R0b0t1I wound up compiling so many things myself and maintaining a fakeroot in my $HOME that it became hard to administrate19:14
R0b0t1So now I just use Portage19:14
lordcirth_workI run latest LTS at work and latest release at home.19:15
R0b0t1There are build scripts that reference project GitHub pages, etc, if you really need code that new.19:15
Bashing-om!latest | Richard_Cavell19:15
ubottuRichard_Cavell: Packages in Ubuntu may not be the latest. Ubuntu aims for stability, so "latest" may not be a good idea. Post-release updates are only considered if they are fixes for security vulnerabilities, high impact bug fixes, or unintrusive bug fixes with substantial benefit. See also !backports, !sru, and !ppa.19:15
virmahahello. From nautilus, I can access a remote share as smb://my-apps.company.com with username mydomain/virmaha. How can I do the same using smbclient?19:15
Jordan_URichard_Cavell: Do you mind doing a major release upgrade every approximately 6 months? If not, then maybe non LTS releases are a good fit for you.19:16
dale1Hi all, I have a very serious problem: on my ubuntu 16.04  my home folder seems to be reset to a blank state, that is all my files, configurations etc . disappeared. And df shows that use is 1%, pretty much empty. Any ideas?19:16
Jordan_Udale1: Did you have a separate /home/ partition that you deleted or removed from your /etc/fstab?19:17
leftyfbR0b0t1: there's ppa's and backports. I almost never have to compile anything.19:18
Jordan_Udale1: Since it sounds like you are using a separate /home/ partition, please pastebin your /etc/fstab .19:18
dale1yes, I had a separated /home partition, but I did not delete or remove it.19:18
R0b0t1Perhaps the situation is better leftyfb, but I do not like trusting random people with my system's administration19:18
leftyfbR0b0t1: Also, please don't answer support questions by suggesting another distribution. That helps nobody19:18
dale1jordan_u: ok, thanks. This was my computer at work, I'm now on my personal laptop. I will do it tomorrow morning. Any suggestion or idea of what may have happened is highly appreciated.19:20
R0b0t1leftyfb: It might help whom I answered if they wish to consider it as an option. I do not dislike Ubuntu due to some intrinsic "Ubuntuness" that it has, but because at some point I realized it was a poor fit for solving the problems I experience.19:21
R0b0t1If you are suggesting that solutions should be avoided merely because you disagree with them then I must admit that is an opinion I can not respect.19:22
leftyfbR0b0t1: I stand by my last comment19:22
leftyfbR0b0t1: Not sure why you hang out in a support channel about a distribution you dislike (for whatever reason).19:23
adam-mcc3I just joined. What's going on?19:23
R0b0t1Because it is the most expedient option for a VPS I recently purchased (it would take a long time to set up my distribution of choice with 1/2 a core, there is lots of compilation involved).19:23
LoshkiRichard_Cavell: any change (including a bug fix) contains the potential to make something worse. The worst is a regression, where something that used to work (and thus which you may already be depending on) suddenly stops working, as a side effect of a code patch which you weren't interested in to begin with. Damned if you do (new fixes, new bugs), and damned if you don't (no fixes for your existing bugs)19:23
R0b0t1So I am trying to be pragmatic. Don't use Ubuntu because it is Ubuntu, use Ubuntu because it solves your problems.19:24
Jordan_Udale1: One possibility is that the wrong volume is being mounted to /home/ for some reason, though then you would expect the directories for your users to be missing rather than existant but empty.19:26
dale1Jordan_U: yes, exactly, that's also what I thought. It's there but empty. It seems like a totally clean directory as if it was created anew wiping out all old information19:30

leftyfbYounder: can we help you with something?20:32
YounderNo my temper is under control now20:33
YounderBut there is is this one question. I have a Ubuntu 16.04 version and CUDA doesn't work20:34
leftyfbYounder: https://askubuntu.com/questions/799184/how-can-i-install-cuda-on-ubuntu-16-04     first result on google for "Ubuntu 16.04 cuda"20:35
YounderIt's a bizarre error seeming to originate from a update a couple of months ago. I have had CUDA installed for many yesrs20:35
YounderAnyhow I am confues but it stared with a update in november after I had installd (in /usr/local/) gcc 7.020:37
YounderSince then I get an error relating to header files I haven't modified.20:38
ioriaYounder, how did you installed it ?20:40
Younderiora I installed it from /usr/local as a .run shell script20:41

ioriamaybe bettr, never tried20:42
Younderioria, worth a try20:42

Younderioria, Thanks for the effort, But I feel the reinstall combing with 18.04 is the one which will clear out the problem20:44
leftyfbYounder: then why bother asking for help?20:44
ioriaYounder, ok20:44
YounderBecause I have a hackaton requiring a solution in February20:45
leftyfb18.04 won't be released until April20:45
YounderExactlt20:46
leftyfbSo you asked for help with a problem. Someone offered help. You refused and said you'll wait till April to fix it with a fresh install. I asked why you bothered asking. You said because you require a solution before February20:47
leftyfbStill doesn't add up20:48
leftyfbyou need it fixed by February but you say you will fix it in April20:48

TJ-Younder: maybe some tools are being found on the PATH under /usr/local/ rather than the system-supplied version under /usr/, or visa-versa20:53
YounderTJ /usr/local should always override /usr so that is worth a check. thx20:54
Youndermoral (Ubuntu) in system installs use absolute paths.20:56

YounderTJ: Then what is your container install?21:02
ppfhow do i know when the laptop is being pulled from the dock, or being plugged into it?21:02
TJ-ppf: Oh, well on Linux the common way is custom scripts, but generally most desktop environments will auto-configure additional GPU outputs+monitors when they're discovered.21:02
ppfTJ-: not running a DE, just plain old awesome21:03
TJ-ppf: I'm not sure I've seen a tool that automatically *switches* displays rather than adding/removing the additional, but it is certainly possible. The tool "xrandr" makes it easy to script such things21:03
YounderTJ: I got the graphics to work obviously or I wouldn't be talking to you21:03

rscheidemanI have a question about Ubuntu 17.10 and netplan....why the change over to it and not the old way?21:53
ThedarkbI need drivers for my Realtek wifi adapter.21:56
Thedarkband I have no wired connection.21:56
ThedarkbWhat should I do?21:56
ThedarkbI don't know who made the WiFi adapter, but realtek drivers work.21:57
TJ-rscheideman: netplan is network-service agnostic; it's config is converted to the actual format of the used network-servce21:58
ThedarkbI got it working under windows XP, but I can't get the dependencies without a connection under Lubuntu.21:59
TJ-Thedarkb: what does "lspci -nn" show for the device?22:03
ThedarkbGive me a minute, I'm booted into XP22:04
ThedarkbWell, POSReady 200922:04
ThedarkbSo basically XP.22:04
ThedarkbTJ-, It's a usb adapter.22:06
TJ-Thedarkb: ahhh, so "lsusb" then!22:07
ThedarkbSorry, I meant to say Ralink adapter.22:07
ThedarkbYeah, I ran it and it's seeing a Ralink RT537022:08
TJ-Thedarkb: you could use a virtual machine on Windows to run the Linux install (VirtualBox can I believe), then pass the USB device through to the VM - you'd have 'wired' networking in the VM and be able to detect/install drivers22:09
ThedarkbIt's already using the wrong drivers by the way.22:09
TJ-Thedarkb: regardless of the model name, the most important (and aways unique) info we need is the ID, of the form Vendor:Device22:09
ThedarkbIt just picked some from a list or something.22:09
TJ-Thedarkb: the drivers bind based on the Vendor:Device ID, so they are unlikely to be 'wrong' but there could be bugs22:10
ThedarkbCan I manually set drivers?22:10
ThedarkbI had to go to the chip maker's website to set this thing up on POSReady22:11
TJ-Thedarkb: do you get anything from "ls -l /sys/class/net/*/device/driver"22:13
TJ-Thedarkb: if that shows a link the driver has bound to the device22:14
ThedarkbYeah, there's a driver bound.22:14
TJ-Thedarkb: what's the interface name (the bit where the * was in the previous command) ?22:18
Thedarkbeno122:19
Thedarkband wlx000f00416cec22:19
TJ-Thedarkb: OK, so the wifi device is wlx000f00416cec. Try a network scan: "sudo iwlist wlx000f00416cec scan" --- if you see "Cell"s reported it's finding Access Points22:20

koldbertHey tbere, I'm trying to install from USB but it's just booting to GRUB22:21
ThedarkbThere's a Cell 01 connected to my network but it's not getting any packets through by the looks of it TJ-22:21
TJ-Thedarkb: if the command sees the AP then the device is working... from this point on the issue is with connecting and authenticating to the network22:22
TJ-Thedarkb: Have you configured a connection for this wifi AP using Network Manager? Does it try and fail to connect?22:23
koldbertHow do I get to the install window?22:23
TJ-koldbert: Installer starts using GRUB in UEFI systems. First entry in the GRUB menu should be the one you need22:24
koldbertTJ-: I don't think it gives options22:25
ThedarkbTJ-, Yeah22:26
koldbertI put in boot and it says I need to load the kernel22:26
ThedarkbIt's connected but no packets are getting through.22:26
ThedarkbI think I'll just get the right drivers with a VM22:27
ThedarkbI have a crossover adapter so I can use my thinkpad as a glorified router for a while maybe?22:28
TJ-koldbert: Oh, that suggests it couldn't find the GRUB menu file, which suggests the image on the USB is corrupt. Did you verify the ISO checksum?22:29

koldbertIdk why22:29
koldbertThank you22:29
TJ-Thedarkb: what does "iwconfig" report regarding Invalid/Retries ?22:29

ThedarkbRTS thr:off22:31
koldbertTJ-: okay, thank you22:31

ThedarkbI ran it twice, the second time after a connection attempt.22:32
ThedarkbTJ-,22:32
TJ-Thedarkb: there might be clues as to problems in the logs. try "tail -f /var/log/kern.log" and if you don't see obvious wifi related error/warning messages arriving, then press Ctrl+C then try "tail -f /var/log/syslog" - that's where wpa_supplicant and NetworkManager log to22:34
