=== dreamon_ is now known as dreamon [13:45] I need help with my computer audio. I am using Xubuntu. I am a linux newbie. [13:45] Can anyone help? [13:46] i think you'd need to be more specific [13:48] I have installed Xubuntu on my ASUS netbook. But after that, I am not getting any sound from the speakers when I play a song or a video. [13:49] The speaker icon shows that the sound is playing, but I am not getting any. [13:49] JBS: Isn't you sound just muted? [13:49] Nope. Checked it many times [13:50] I stepped in that trap more than I'd like to admit. [13:50] aplay -l [13:50] shows devices? [13:51] strange: didn't get you? Do you want me to type these in terminal? [13:51] **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC269VB Analog [ALC269VB Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 [13:51] this is the output [13:53] in pavucontrol when you play something do you see the blue balance bar moving? [13:54] or i think it was called paucontrol heh [13:54] its been a while since i've touched sound stuff [13:55] yes! The blue bar moves [14:07] you run latest xubuntu? [14:07] No [14:07] v16 [14:09] JBS: in a terminal run alsamixer - then check for any channels marked as MM - they're muted, if you see some m toggles that - check volumes too if that's the case [14:09] if no muted channels say so :) [14:10] some other stuff to look at here https://askubuntu.com/questions/829520/ubuntu-16-04-no-sound-from-speakers-only-headphones-working [14:11] flocculant: Master and speakers are not muted [14:13] ok - I always check there before looking futher - so nothing muted that shouldn't be - and vol levels are ok I assume [14:14] might be worth screenshotting your playback, output and configuration tabs in pavucontrol so people know wat they're set to [14:15] hard for me to remember what that might look like - mine just has a dac in there ... [14:46] flocculant: How do I attach the screenshots? [14:47] just give us the urls I guess [14:50] flocculant: I have taken the screenshots but don't know how to upload them and provide the urls. I am a Linux newbie. :( [14:56] imgur or something? [14:59] Nope. Don't use that. :( [15:00] well something like that - this sort of thing is absolutely nothing to do with you not knowing linux ... do what you did before [15:05] there are tons of sites where you can just drag and rop image [15:05] and get an url [15:05] http://i.imgur.com/0xKY8ii.png [15:06] this is first [15:08] http://i.imgur.com/9p3HqmM.png [15:08] this is the second one [15:09] none of those are screenshots of pavucontrol [15:10] clikc the vol icon in the panel and go to the mixer [15:11] http://i.imgur.com/dDtjLtg.png [15:12] http://i.imgur.com/ELUhR8v.png [15:13] http://i.imgur.com/yk0d3Yr.png [15:14] flocculant: were they helpful? [15:14] those 3 were - that all looks right [15:15] hmmm. Still the same problem persists. [15:15] JBS: and what happens if you unmute the headphone channel(s) in alsamixer [15:15] and what are the channels not showing there to the right? [15:16] use arrow key to navigate [15:17] http://i.imgur.com/FIEmdtG.png [15:18] I unmuted all those and disabled the auto mute. How do I save the changes? [15:19] they're saved [15:22] JBS: ok - found a possible bug report for 'this' - what version of Xubuntu are you using? [15:22] I tried playing the song again, still no sound. [15:23] flocculant: 16.04 [15:23] JBS: well - we've not done anything yet - just finding out where you 'are' - I've got no sound could be whole bunch of things ... [15:24] I agree. [15:24] could have a useful bug report [15:25] how do I report it? [15:25] no - I've found one - just looking at it :) [15:25] ohh, yeah! :) [15:27] JBS: quick one - alsamicer - do you have vol level on both headphone channels up? [15:27] s/alsamixer [15:29] wow! [15:29] it's working! [15:30] Thanks a lot @flocculant [15:30] :) [15:30] JBS: that did it? [15:30] yes! [15:31] ok - plug headphones in then unplug - you will have no sound again, speaker channel misidentified as a headphone one [15:31] http://i.imgur.com/hBRwmXn.png [15:31] i did that [15:31] you'll need to do it again in alsamixer [15:31] lp 1606078 [15:31] Launchpad bug 1606078 in alsa-driver (Ubuntu) "No sound with Ubuntu 16.04" [High,Expired] https://launchpad.net/bugs/1606078 [15:32] that earphone thing is right. No sound after that [15:32] yup [15:33] JBS: what would be super helpful - would be to grab the dev version and check it out in the live session [15:33] Guess I would have to follow steps suggested in the link posted by you [15:33] if you see that same fail there - report it from there - that's important [15:34] JBS: that's the bug - but it might be fixed in later versions - we are 2 years further along now [15:34] if you want to check that for the community - then I can help you with that [15:35] flocculant: Do you mean that I should try the live version first using a bootable usb and then check for errors? [15:35] JBS: sort of [15:35] Actually before installing that, I have checked it. The problem is there also. [15:35] what I am saying is -- check it in the latest unreleased Xubuntu - see if you find the same problem there - in 18.04 version [15:36] if it's fixed there that's good, if not we can report it from 18.04 [15:36] if you want to do that - I'll talk you through that [15:38] and thus you're actually helping the community [15:38] I can do one thing. I can download the 18.04 version .iso file and then boot it from a usb pendrive. But, I will be out of my internet access data. I can try that tomorrow. [15:38] JBS: yup - that'd be awesome [15:39] do it when you can [15:39] I will try to do my part for the community. [15:39] \o/ [15:39] Thanks for your help [15:39] np [15:39] So after checking that, should I tell the output on this channel? [15:41] if you get the problem - from a terminal run ubuntu-bug alsa-driver [15:41] while in the live session obviously [15:42] that will grab all the necessary info and open a browser so you can fill some stuff in [15:42] okay [15:42] once done - you can ping me in #xubuntu-devel with the bug number and I will do some stuff with the report [15:42] I am getting a software update notofication. Should I go for that? [15:43] JBS: yea [15:43] and if there happens to be an alsa one - check your issue again :) [15:44] okay. Will try my best. [15:45] awesome :)
