VystyBashing-om: Yea, I get that. Apparently I don't know how to run this verification.00:00
TJ-Vysty: so you can see the MD5SUMS file here http://releases.ubuntu.com/16.04.3/00:00
tsarompycan i use the kicker from plasma-desktop without running kde? like if i wanted to have openbox in .xinitrc could i somehow load the taskbar/tray?00:00
TpmSpainokay00:00
Bashing-omVysty: You are getting frustrated for nothing :) . slow down go get a cup of coffee. Now we can not help that you are working from a Windows machine :)00:00
VystyBashing-om: Yes, I'm sorry I'm frustrated.00:01
TpmSpainIll be back.. And ill you know.00:01
VystyI was reallllllllllllyyyyy hoping not to spend my day like this.00:01
VystyLike, really really.00:01
TpmSpainwell.. Vysrt00:01
TJ-Vysty: once you know the hash (checksum) for the .iso file you downloaded, you run a (Windows) program as recommended above to generate a hash (checksum) of the downloaded file, and compare the values to ensure they are identical00:01
TpmSpainyour learning :-)00:01
Bashing-omVysty: Once you know how .. takes all of 30 minure total to RE-install . take it easy :)00:02
LoshkiVysty: ok, in desperation, I have googled "how to prepare a linux usb boot from windows" and it says to use Unetbootin. Also, booting, which was never simple in the first place, except when everyone had dvd readers, is complicated. Does your machine have UEFI booting?00:02
VystyOkay, I have now verified the ISO with the value provided by TJ's link on my USB.00:02
VystyIt's a match.00:02
TJ-Vysty: Yay :) so no corruption00:02
VystyLoshki: I have no idea. Don't know what UEFI is. :(00:02
VystyOkay, now, I'm going to put the USB into my computer and restart it.00:02
LoshkiVysty: probably older hardware, pre uefi, or you'd have remembered this pain00:02
VystyLoshki: I do this once every 1-2 years or so. All I remember is general pain, nothing specific.00:03
LoshkiVysty: If it fails, Download UNetbootin (GPLv2) and use it to burn your iso to USB, then retry00:03
Bashing-omVysty: See too: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/burn-a-dvd-on-windows .00:03
VystyYea, my computer still isn't recognizing the USB.00:04
LoshkiVysty: try a different slot, as the actress said to the Bishop00:04
VystyMy options in the GRUB are: Ubuntu, Advanced Options for Ubuntu, Windows Boot Manager, and System Setup00:04
VystyLoshki: No luck.00:04
TJ-Vysty: "System Setup" means the PC is using UEFI00:04
VystyTJ-: Gotcha. Does that help or hinder me?00:05
TJ-Vysty: UEFI is an alternate (newer) way for PCs to boot, compared to the old 'BIOS' of the 1980/90s00:05
VystyAny recommendations now? Guessing I made the USB drive improperly.00:06
TJ-Vysty: it just means you may have to 'tell' the PC's own firmware setup to boot differently. Firstly, there should be an option to press a key during early boot to get a Manual Boot Menu where you can choose the device to boot from. Usually pressing F12 or F2 or F10 or similar00:06
Bashing-omVysty: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows .00:06
TJ-Vysty: I think the USB is fine, but the PC is simply booting from the installed device because that's the default00:07
TJ-Vysty: what make/model is the PC (or motherboard) - we can try to find out what the key-press should be00:07
VystyTJ-: Okay, we're getting somewhere.00:08
VystyStartup Device Menu00:08
VystyStill not seeing the $%@#$^@#&% USB drive.00:08
TJ-Vysty: nice one... does it list the USB device? possibly lists it twice with slightly different entries?00:08
VystyI got some Windows and Ubuntu options for SATA 1, Network 1: IP4, Network 1: IP6, and Enter Setup00:09
TJ-Vysty: anything about "removable" ? if not, you'll need to Enter Setup and configure the boot manager00:09
VystyNothing removable.00:09
VystySo if I go to the primary boot sequence, this it the sequence:00:09
TJ-Vysty: OK, "Enter Setup", find the "boot menu" management area00:09
Vysty1. USB CDROM 2. USB FDD 3. USB KEY 4. USB HDD 5. SATA 1 and 2 6. Network 100:10
LoshkiOh, isn't your usb stick basically a USB HDD?00:10
VystyI would think so.00:10
TJ-Vysty: if that is the ordering, I'd expect either (1) or (4) to work with the ISO image you have on the USB00:11
VystyStill isn't booting. I made it the first in the sequence.00:11
VystyTJ-: I would expect that, too.00:11
TJ-Vysty: is there a "Security" menu in Setup ?00:11
VystyTJ-: Yes.00:11
=== imadz714 is now known as imadz713
TJ-Vysty: go into it, tell us if "Secure Boot" is enabled. Also tell us if you see some options for "Trust"00:11
VystySEcure boot disabled00:11
VystyEnable it?00:11
VystyTJ-: I don't see anything about trust.00:12
TJ-Vysty: as an experiment, enable S.B. see if some "Trust" options appear00:13
VystyEnabled. Nothing about trust.00:13
TJ-Vysty: on some makes/models of UEFI PCs recently it is required for you to manually 'trust' the bootloader file on the device, and to do it S.B. has to be enabled00:13
VystyWhen I created this bootable USB, I formatted it. DOn't know if I clicked FAT32 or NTFS. Would tha tmake a difference?00:13
TJ-Vysty: errr, depends. USB bootable devices DO NOT require formatting00:14
VystyI know that from about 15 minutes ago. It was my 3rd time trying to create the USB bootable device, and I was running out of room.00:14
TJ-Vysty: the ISO file is a byte-by-byte image that needs to go onto the USB device starting from the first byte. The ISO contains it's own formatting00:14
VystyI figured it would be faster to just click "format" than to open the folder and delete everything first.00:15
VystySo... next step?00:15
TJ-Vysty: I think we need to ensure you've correctly written the ISO to the USB. Right now it sounds as if you simply copied the ISO file into the file-system with something like Windows explorer00:17
VystyTJ-: Nope. Used a program. What was it called...00:17
TJ-Vysty: but I wasn't following your issue earlier so may have missed it... unetbootln?00:17
VystyTJ-: I used Universal USB Installer to make the bootable USB.00:18
VystyTJ-: The original issue is I attempted to upgrade from 16.04 to 17.04 and the whole damn thing crashed.00:18
mascaquiUse rufus00:18
mascaquiVery good00:18
TJ-Vysty: ahhh, OK, since I don't use Windows I'm slightly handicapped; let me read up on it! Yes, I saw your orginal problem :D00:18
VystyNow that I've learned by lesson, I would be happy to have my 16.04 back and get on with my life.00:18
mascaquiDid you have separate partitions?00:19
VystySpending my afternoon doing this was about the 3rd from last thing I wanted to do today.00:19
VystyIs this a safe site to get Rufus from? https://rufus.akeo.ie/00:19
Vystymascaqui: Don't remember.00:19
mascaquiYes00:20
mascaquiThe site is like decent forum00:21
mascaquiAnd they explain with pictures00:21
TJ-Vysty: OK, Universal USB Creator looks like it does a direct write of the ISO, but then the screenshots show it actually isn't doing that, but installing it's own boot loader (syslinux) so I'm not sure00:21
VystyTJ-: We'll solve the problem with me doing it again with rufus.00:21
TJ-Vysty: OK, good luck... it's gone midnight here and I will have to leave shortly00:22
mascaquiAre you dual booting?00:22
Vystymascaqui: Nope.00:23
VystyTJ-: Shit... thank you for the help so far.00:23
TJ-Vysty: this Ubuntu guide shows the Rufus way very clearly: https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-create-a-usb-stick-on-windows#000:26
electricmilkWhatever happened to ubuntuguide.org? That site was super handy00:26
TJ-electricmilk: I think the operator(s) got tired00:27
VystyWell... now that TJ- needs to go to bed... can anyone else help me with this reinstallation?00:27
electricmilkTJ-,  That's too bad.  I wonder if there is a mirror00:27
TJ-Vysty: follow the guide I just linked, it is rather good!00:27
electricmilkVirusTotal.com lists https://rufus.akeo.ie/ as clean.  It tested it across 66 engines00:28
KashoutA friend made a folder called ".." how do I remove it?00:28
electricmilkIt is also the first link on Google for "Rufus" so it is indeed the right link00:29
VystyTJ-: Yea, I'm concerned after I use Rufus when something else doesn't go according to a guide.00:29
electricmilkKashout, .. isn't a folder00:29
KashoutIt is a folder.00:29
electricmilkKashout, It is typically an option to go back a folder00:29
VystyTJ-: And when I try to find another guide to solve the problems, I get contradictory or confusing advice.00:30
Vysty:/00:30
Kashout"ls -l" lists . .. .. bin docs00:30
electricmilkKashout, Do you only see it in one location or in every folder?00:30
KashoutI see the first . and .. in every folder but there is a 2nd .. in this folder.00:30
electricmilkKashout, what does file '..' give you in terminal?00:31
mascaquirm dir00:31
KashoutEvery time I try to do things to the .. folder it redirects to the containing folder.00:31
electricmilkI'm not on Ubuntu but usually '..' is associated with an option to go back a folder00:31
electricmilkKashout,  Exactly00:31
electricmilkKashout,  If you want to confirm though you can use the file command in terminal00:31
electricmilkfile '..'00:32
KashoutI would delete the containing folder but "rm -r" hangs, "rm -rv" lists it recursively going into the containing folder.00:32
TJ-Kashout: it's possible the dots aren't ASCII periods but UTF characters that look like the ASCII period00:32
KashoutAnything is possible, they hex edited the hard drive.00:33
mascaquirmdir -r (folder)00:33
TJ-Kashout: try "ls | hexdump -C" and compare the ".." entries for their codes00:33
mascaquiTry00:33
electricmilkI'd be REALLY careful messing around with rm -r00:33
mascaqui A folder is a directory00:33
mascaquiyou can rmdir00:34
mascaquiTo remove the folder00:34
mascaquirmdir -r "folder"00:34
Kashoutrmdir -r .. hangs.00:34
electricmilkI'd confirm .. is indeed a folder first with file '..'  If it is indeed a folder I'd then try rm -r '..'00:35
KashoutTJ-: the dots are "0a 0a"00:35
electricmilkInclude the single quotes00:35
TJ-Kashout: does "ls -b" show anything different00:35
TJ-Kashout: 0a is 10 which is the ASCII line-feed character00:35
Kashoutstill 0a00:35
Kashoutfile '..' shows ..: directory00:36
electricmilkKashout,  Then try rm -r '..'00:36
Ben64made a file called .. ?00:36
electricmilkinclude the single quotes00:37
TJ-Kashout: how about "ls -A" which doesn't show the regular "." or ".."00:37
Kashoutelectricmilk: rm -r '..' hangs, rm -rv '..' shows it recursively opening the containing folder.00:37
electricmilkAh crap...file .. will always show as "directory"00:37
TJ-Kashout: also, compare the inode numbers with "ls -i" - if they are the same you've got a corrupted directory00:37
electricmilkbecause ".." is a directory that takes you back a directory00:38
electricmilkKashout,  Then I'm still thinking .. isn't a folder...00:38
hello_kittyi have an ssh key in text on windows... im trying to add it to an ubuntu server that already has some ssh keys on it (using putty). How do I paste/append this key on into there? :D   (im not worried about messing up, this is a freshly created server which exists just for learning to do this)00:38
electricmilkOne period (.) means this directory. Two periods (..) mean the parent directory.00:38
KashoutTJ-: inode numbers of what? the .. directory and the containing directory?00:39
mascaquiBut its not supposed to take you unless you type cd00:39
TJ-Kashout: of both  the ".." entries00:39
electricmilkKashout, What about in your GUI file manager/explorer?  Do you see the directory named ..?00:39
KashoutYes.00:40
KashoutTJ-: 27262977 for the containing folder, 27263492 for the ..00:40
TJ-Kashout: are you able to show us: "pastebinit <( ls -i | hexdump -C)" ?00:41
TJ-Kashout: make that "ls -ai"00:41
TJ-Kashout: are you able to show us: "pastebinit <( ls -ai | hexdump -C)" ?00:41
KashoutI will.00:42
* TJ- wonders if there's some overlayfs magic going on here, otherwise it must be UTF characters that look like the ASCII dot, or corruption00:43
Ben64i can't make a file with 0x0a00:43
electricmilkGood point Ben64.  I can't either.  mkdir: cannot create directory ‘..’: File exists00:44
hello_kittywhat ab out...  echo 'pasted my key in here' >> ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub    will that add my key?00:44
Ben64electricmilk: well that isn't 0x0a00:45
hello_kittywould be nice if i could create the file if it doesnt exist or append to it if it does00:45
hello_kittyor anything really that i can do via a bash script with the key pasted in there00:46
electricmilkhello_kitty,  >> will create a file if it doesn't exist. If the file does exist it will indeed append00:46
Kashouthttp://paste.ubuntu.com/26218218/00:46
electricmilkhello_kitty,  > will create a file or will overwrite the file if it exists00:46
hello_kittythanks electricmilk . do you happen to know if a buncha of keys appended one after another is a valid format for id_rsa.pub?00:46
electricmilkhello_kitty,  one sec00:47
KashoutBen64: regular commands were not used though.00:48
KashoutI said earlier the drive was modified with a hex editor.00:48
Ben64Kashout: i'm not using regular commands00:48
electricmilkhello_kitty,  My file has a bunch of keys each on its own line00:48
VystyTJ-: Still awake?00:49
electricmilkVysty,  What's the problem you are having?00:49
hello_kittyelectricmilk: that's how mine looks too. So if I wanted to do that via a script I guess i have to see if the file exists and if it does pure a newline in there00:49
TJ-Vysty: yeah :s00:49
tsarompygoddamn pulseaudio >:|00:49
VystyTJ-: Rufus worked.00:49
VystyTJ-: Recognized and able to install.00:50
TJ-Kashout: thanks for the pastebin, that's ... interesting!00:50
electricmilkhello_kitty,  if you use echo >> file  it will create the file if it doesn't exist.00:50
VystyAlthough I just remembered I forgot to checksum it. Don't that now.00:50
VystyDoing that now*00:50
electricmilkhello_kitty,  Go ahead and test it.  Go to a random folder and type: echo "test123" >> test.txt00:50
electricmilkhello_kitty,  Notice how it will create the test.txt file00:50
electricmilkhello_kitty,  Now go ahead and type: echo "test555" >> test.txt00:51
hello_kittyelectricmilk: but if it *does* exist, i think i need to echo a newline in there before adding another key...maybe (i have a fresh machine to test it on if it breaks)00:51
electricmilkhello_kitty,  Notice how both lines exist00:51
hello_kittyoh  hm00:51
electricmilkhello_kitty,  >> appends but will create a new file if it doesn't exist00:51
Ben64so its not 0a, it's 2e00:51
electricmilkhello_kitty,  Just don't use >00:51
TJ-Ben64: yes, ASCII dot's all the way00:52
Ben64could maybe remove by inode?00:52
electricmilk2e = 00101110 = 46 = .00:53
TJ-Ben64: yes, but if it's a mask to a proper directory it could delete something important00:53
hello_kittythanks electricmilk !00:53
Ben64use the same method to rename?00:53
electricmilkhello_kitty,  No problem00:53
VystyTJ-: Once I've made my bootable USB disk with Rufus, which file am I supposed to run checksum on?00:53
TJ-Ben64: Kashout I'd recommend you try to rename it to a safe name first, explore it, THEN decide whether to delete00:53
KashoutIt used to be the src folder for something I compiled.00:54
Vystyelectricmilk: Sorry I didn't response before. Doing 3 things at once. I'm reinstalling ubuntu and have been having some issues. Trying to double-check everything I'm doing every step of the way.00:54
TJ-Vysty: generally, you checksum the ISO file immediately after download, before writing to USB, and you did that earlier00:54
VystyTJ-: Whew, okay.00:54
VystyGood.00:54
TJ-Vysty: :)00:54
electricmilkVysty,  What issues?00:54
Vystyelectricmilk: Mostly me just knowing enough to get myself into trouble.00:55
Vystyand me being pissed off/frustrated/impatient because I tried to upgrade my system and crashed my computer, so I get to spend my afternoon reinstalling and restoring backups. :/00:55
VystyTJ-: Okay, I'm in the installation phase. Two options: "Download Updates while Installing Ubuntu" and "Install 3rd party software for graphics and WIFI and other media"00:56
VystyYes to both?00:56
TJ-Vysty: Yes, because the installer had a bug which does it anyhow :D00:57
Ben64i've done it00:57
TJ-Ben64: ?00:57
Ben64but it got weird00:57
Ben64https://paste.ubuntu.com/26218270/00:58
TJ-Ben64: I thought some construct around 'echo -e "\x2e\x2e" ' would work00:58
VystyTJ-: Now I have two options. Erase Ubuntu or Erase disk. Erase Ubuntu sounds easier.00:58
TJ-Ben64: but you have the same inode numbers there?00:59
Ben64yeah thats the weird part00:59
VystyTJ-: If I choose erase Ubuntu, I don't have to deal with any partioning, right?00:59
TJ-Vysty: yes00:59
Ben64it was inode 13 before i messed with it00:59
TJ-Ben64: what command did you apply to it?00:59
Ben64used a hex editor00:59
VystyGod damn I hope I did backups right.00:59
TJ-Ben64: well that's cheating :D01:00
Ben64that's what Kashout said happened01:00
TJ-Ben64: but explains why the inode numbers are so low!01:00
KashoutThat is what happened.01:00
TJ-Ben64: did he? I didn't see that!01:00
Ben64yeah made a new filesystem and loop mounted it01:00
Ben64because i'm not about to hexedit my stuff :)01:00
TJ-Kashout: oh, in that case it counts as corruption since it is illegal01:00
KashoutSo what do I do?01:01
Ben64i'd say make a backup, then hex edit it back01:01
TJ-Ben64: right ... but my point is in a large file system it's harder to locate/change via a hexedit01:01
Ben64or.... see if fsck can fix it01:01
Ben64then punch whoever did it01:01
TJ-Ben64: Yes, I think so01:01
KashoutWould it be better to copy out my data and reformat?01:01
TJ-^^^ fsck ^^^^ not punch01:01
TJ-Kashout: why? for 2 bytes?!01:02
TJ-Kashout: try unmounting the file-system and then running "fsck -f" on it01:03
TJ-Kashout: if that doesn't work we can create a script to do it via the brute-force method01:03
Ben64Entry '..' in .../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../.. (12) is duplicate '..' entry.01:03
Ben64heh.01:03
Ben64Unconnected directory inode 13 (/test/???)01:04
Ben64so that might mess stuff up in that dir01:04
TJ-Ben64: unless we create another link to it01:04
TJ-Ben64: ca't hard-link it so would need to be creative01:05
Ben64true, and also Kashout's has different inodes01:05
KashoutAs long as the damage is contained in that directory it won't cause me any issues.01:05
Ben64backup anyway01:05
TJ-Kashout: yeah, back-up and then try fsck01:05
TJ-It would be simply to write a small C program that accesses the dirent itself and corrects it01:06
VystyTJ-: While you're still up and I'm waiting for this to install, have you heard of the bluetooth ubuntu issue? "Bastien's Computer"?01:06
TJ-Vysty: BT has generally been very good for me01:06
electricmilkKashout, this may seem retaded but have you tried typing ls -l...finding the directory and just copying the '..01:07
electricmilkKashout, Then just paste in rm -r ?01:07
VystyWhat started this whole crap for me is I bought a new speaker with bluetooth capabilities. IT worked fine for a few days then one day it couldn't sync up (yesterday). I read up about it to try to fix it, and a lot of recommendations pointed to 17.10 as "fixing the bluetooth problem".01:07
Ben64oh it put /lost+found/#13 for me01:07
Ben64probably won't lose any data (still backup though)01:07
VystyTJ-: The next day when I tried to "fix the problem" my computer crashed and here I am.01:07
KashoutOk, here we go.01:08
TJ-Vysty: Bastin Nocera, one of the RedHat bluetooth devs01:08
Vystyyea that name popped up01:09
TJ-s/Bastin/Bastien/01:09
VystyAnyway, was wondering if you knew anything about the bluetooth issue, because I'm wondering if I'm going to run into it again.01:09
TJ-Vysty: I fixed an issue with PIN codes recently with older Apple keyboards, using bletoothctl (the CLI) usually it helps to delete/remove the device and re-pair/re-trust01:10
VystyTJ-: Great. IF you're still around when I"m done and still have the issue... I Would appreciate your help with that.01:11
KashoutHmm.01:14
KashoutThat didn't turn out well.01:14
KashoutThere was a lot of messages and then a lengthy segfault.01:14
KashoutI'll re-format to be on the safe side.01:15
TJ-Ouch!01:15
VystyTJ-: Okay, I'm on a working system downloading the backup software. I'm about to click the Restore button.01:15
VystyAnything I should know before moving forward?01:15
TJ-Ben64: I think I'm going to create a tool to re-write dirents, just due to this!01:15
TJ-Vysty: might be worth doing "sudo apt update; sudo apt upgrade" just in case01:16
TJ-Vysty: also, do you need to enable additional software repositories? universe, multiverse, restricted, partner, -proposed ?01:17
VystyTJ-: Hell if I remember.01:17
VystyTJ-: What do you recommend?01:18
TJ-Vysty: if you can't find some software you want to install, assume it's in one of those addtional repo components and enable it then.01:18
VystyTJ-: Should I worry about that before restoring my backup?01:18
TJ-Vysty: you can find out on here with a bot command !info <package>01:19
TJ-Vysty: No, not if the backup is just your user data01:19
VystyTJ-: Cool. It's going through a crazy update right now from the sudo apt upgrade01:19
TJ-Vysty: bringing the system right up to date01:19
Vystyyup!01:20
VystyTJ-: When I do this restore, is the "Backup Location" where I'm pulling the data from or where I'm sending it to?01:28
TJ-Vysty: not sure as I don't know what you're using!01:28
VystyTJ-: The program is just called "Backups"01:28
TJ-Vysty: I'd assume it'd be the source, and Restore location would be the destination01:28
TJ-Vysty: generally tools will ask for the source first, then the destination01:29
VystyMy two options for folders are "Backup location" and "Folder"01:29
VystyAnd it asks "RESTORE FROM WHERE?" on top.01:29
TJ-Vysty: I don't use the GUI so I don't know01:30
Vystydamn01:30
VystyTJ-: Hey, are you still up?01:41
TJ-Vysty: was just about to disconnect01:41
Vystyheh01:41
VystyI think I may have gotten it...01:41
VystyI'm just panicked as shit about my data.01:42
TJ-Is it all back now?01:42
VystyApparently my data is restoring from the specific date that I backed it up (today).01:42
VystyHopefully. It's restoring.01:42
VystyThanks so much for your help and patience.01:42
VystyUsually by the time I get in here it's because I'm so frustrated I'm about to start breaking shit.01:42

mutantturkeyhi all... having a problem on ubuntu server after a reboot03:16
mutantturkeyessentially - my ethernet keeps changing names... so my /etc/network/interfaces file doesn't always work03:17
mutantturkeyanyway for me to make this stop changing or just use eth0?03:17
daxmutantturkey: do the various names that it's switching between start with en?03:28
daxmutantturkey: either way, to use eth0 you'd add net.ifnames=0 to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line in /etc/default/grub (put it inside the "quote marks", so it might look like e.g. GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash net.ifnames=0"). Then, run sudo update-grub03:31
daxmutantturkey: but it shouldn't be changing like that in the first place, so I'm worried that if you do that it'll just start switching between eth0, eth1, etc.03:31
vijuHi, is there something broken in ubuntu 16.04 updates? Whenever I close the lid I get a authentication screen different from the usual one and it doesn't show my username, only password field along with two other buttons are  there - unlock and switch user which again don't work.03:32
mutantturkeydax: i did  do that...03:38

mutantturkeyoh nvm03:38
mutantturkey GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line in /etc/default/grub <<< thoughtt it just read my env variable when i rand update grub03:39
daxyeah, you need to actually put it in the file03:39

Vystylotuspsychje: I did. That's why I'm in this mess in the first place.06:06
VystyWhen I try to do something on my own I screw it up then I come crawling in here to fix it.06:06
JoshuaDVysty, You can install 80% of the packages with one apt call and then try that desktop instead, but to make vanilla Ubuntu into exactly Ubuntu Gnome will take more work, and probably not worth the effort06:07
JoshuaDIf you've only just installed Ubuntu, and know for sure you prefer Gnome, then I'd just download the image and reinstall06:07
JoshuaDIf you're not sure and want to try a few different desktop environments before settling in, you can just install it and try it06:08
VystyAnd I don't know if I don't speak Linux or if I just don't know what I'm doing, but whenever I come here it's like a battle to communicate what I want to do.06:08
JoshuaDi believe `apt install ubuntu-gnome-desktop` will give you enough to see if you like it.06:08
VystyI thought I was done after the successful reinstall and now there's a suggestion of doing it again and... I'm frustrated.06:08
JoshuaDyea, if you really don't want to reinstall, run that apt command06:09
VystyJoshuaD: When you say "probably not worth the effort", what does that mean?06:09
VystyLike, what are the things I will actually notice when using my computer if I do run the apt command vs. reinstalling?06:09
JoshuaDthat it would take longer to turn vanilla ubuntu into exactly ubuntu gnome package-by-package than it would to just download the image and reinstall06:09
VystyJoshuaD: You mean longer install time/06:10
lotuspsychjeVysty: i always install clean, then in one command reinstall everything: sudo apt install vlc rar preload pan clementine....06:10
lotuspsychjeVysty: updates enabled during setup= 30min i got it all06:11
JoshuaDVysty, You'll be fine doing the apt install i said above. You probably won't notice anything different but the lack of branding on boot up and shut down.06:11
JoshuaDchoose gdm3 when it asks you which display manager to use.06:11
VystyJoshuaD: If I run that command, am I permanently switching from unity to gnome, or will I have the option between the two?06:12
JoshuaDyou can switch between the two. There should be a dropdown menu at your login screen06:12
JoshuaDYou can also change the display manager with uh, dpkg-reconfigure gdm3 iirc06:12
JoshuaDReally the display manager doesn't matter very much unless you're really particular. lightdm and gdm3 are both fine06:13
VystyJoshuaD: Alright... my apologies for being so hesitant, but is there anything I need to watch out for or anything that can crash by running that command?06:13
lotuspsychjeVysty: thats also a risk unity fighting with gnome packages06:14
lotuspsychjeVysty: if gnome it is you really need, i reccomend clean install06:14
JoshuaDI share that recommendation.06:14
JoshuaDVysty, not that i'm aware of. Maybe gdm3 won't be able to configure correctly and you'll get dumped to a terminal without gui access06:14
JoshuaDif that happens, you can dpkg-reconfigure lightdm and choose lightdm instead of gdm3 at the prompt, then restart06:14
JoshuaDi'm sure other stuff could go wrong. I've done it a lot though. On Ubuntu Gnome I installed pretty much every other desktop system and tried tehm06:15
JoshuaD*them06:15
Vysty...I think I'm going to run it tomorrow when I have more energy.06:15
JoshuaDI had kde, xfce, i3, gnome3, unity, and lxde all installed06:16
JoshuaDit was kind of messy, but w/e. I got to play w/ them until I figured out which ones I liked and then did a fresh install06:16
JoshuaDi think it was like that for 6 months nbd06:16
JoshuaDanyway, i'm off. Good luck. :)06:17
VystyJoshuaD: I appreciate your input. Thank you.06:18
JoshuaDNo problem.  Btw if you don't change your display manager -- if you choose lightdm when prompted -- I don't think anything will go wrong. It's the same as installing other programs.06:19
JoshuaDOf course stuff tends to break when you're off the beaten path, but the only place that jumps out at me as a potential break point is the display manager, so if you leave that alone I dunno, I wouldn't be worried.06:20

TJ-savastano: undo the edits to sources.list, return to a virgin Ubuntu version (see /usr/share/doc/apt/examples/sources.list) then "sudo apt update" to begin using the Ubuntu repo again. From there you'll likely have to replace any packages installed from the Kali repo10:43

SeldonHi to all, I would like to report a bug I discovered using Ubuntu on my laptop. I need help to decide what package i should indicate15:28
genii!details15:30
ubottuPlease elaborate; your question or issue may not seem clear or detailed enough for people to help you. Please give more detailed information; for example, we might need errors, steps, relevant configuration files, Ubuntu version, and hardware information. Use a !pastebin to avoid flooding the channel.15:30
Seldonmy wifi connection stop working often if i try to download large files or a large amount of small files, with tools like npm or composer. In many cases wifi connection manager freezes, in some cases the entire computer freeze and i need to reboot15:30
Seldoni know , sounds strange that a connection between a wifi problem with a computer freeze, but i experienced this experience a lot of times before write it here15:31
Seldonsorry for my english :-)15:32
tomeaton17I want to make it so that I can ssh to a device on my LAN by its hostname not ip. How can I do this?15:33
geniiSeldon: Do you know the name of the module being used for wifi ?15:34
Seldonno, I'm using xubuntu, if it can help. I installed the kernel 4.15 rc4 from the mainline, but the issue happens with the default kernel release too. I hope it can help15:35
Seldonxubuntu 17.1015:35
geniiSeldon: If you do not have lshw package installed, please install it. Then: sudo lshw -C network  ...and then put results to a pastebin and give the link here please15:37

tomeaton17TJ- on the local machine?15:42
TJ-tomeaton17: correct15:42
TJ-tomeaton17: the alternative is to add an entry to the local network's DNS, but that's usually much more diffifult15:43
tomeaton17TJ-: Yeah I dont think I could convince the sys admins at work to do that15:43
VisitorerTJ- : I updated the BIOS and no change.15:44
VisitorerStill can't boot into Ubuntu15:44
TJ-tomeaton17: some devices support multicast-DNS (aka Apple Bonjour protocol) which on linux is done via avahi15:44

TJ-Visitorer: then that system seems to have something against recent Linux!15:44

JJBbyNew Ubuntu user here, I am having two issues that I could use some help with. 1 is my headphone jack isnt working. 2 is a dual boot question where windows wont open. Any one have any suggestions?15:57
Vamp898JJBby: 1.) Not working means you have no sound or sound is still coming through the speakers? 2.) What exactly does "windows wont open" mean? Is it not booting at all or is it booting and then crashing?16:05
JJBby@vamp898 1) the speakers work but using the headphone jack does nothing, I am unaware of a way to test different ways to make it work. 2) After installing Ubuntu I can not load windows from the dual boot screen. When selected that way the screen takes on the default ubuntu screen color and sits there indefinitely. I can go into the BIOS and load into windows though. Its EFI if thats pertinent16:08
Vamp898JJBby: but when you plugin the headphone jack, there is no more sound on the speakers, right?16:09
JJBbyvamp898: there is still sound coming threw the speakers16:10
Vamp898JJBby: That doesnt sound good (i mean, maybe it does, maybe those are good speakers, but i mean more like your problem :D)16:10

Vamp898Then please do the following. Open an terminal and run "sudo dmesg -Hw" on it. Then, after that, plug in your headphones and unplug them again (with 5 seconds pause) and show us the output (maybe upload it to pastebin.com or a similar service)16:15
JJBbyso I ran the dmesg, plugged in the headphones and nothing happened, is that correct?16:17
mentalitaperhaps sudo dmesg -Hw | nc termbin.com 999916:17
JJBbyis there a way to copy paste commands into the terminal?16:18
JJBbynm, there is16:18
deemhi. i'm trying to copy a file via scp to my local machine and always getting this error. is it network related? never saw anything like this. https://pastebin.com/u2CJzPcw16:19
SiecjeI created a new group and added my current user to the group with sudo usermod -G sftponly $USER. I can't use sudo anymore on Ubuntu 16.04. I get "Sorry, user siecje is not allowed to execute '/bin/ls' as root on host."16:22
SiecjeI rebooted to re-login to actually be in the group.16:22
Siecjebefore I did `id` and it had about 5 or 6 items (one of them was cdrom) after reboot it is only the group with the same name as my user and the new group.16:22
JJBbyThis is the results on Pastebin now https://pastebin.com/XtDLbwFE16:23
deemSiecje: you missed the '-a' option which would have appended the group.16:23
sazawalIs there a freenode channel for bash/shell scripts?16:23
Siecjedeem: It should have been sudo usermod -a -G sftponly $USER?16:24
deemSiecje: exactly16:24
deemyou may want to reboot into a recovery shell and add your user to the groups "adm cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin sambashare"16:24
Siecjedeem: Okay thanks. How can I fix my current state?16:24
Vamp898JJBby: hmmm to be honest, i never seen this. In the sound settings you can set which device should be used to play the sound. I dont know about this notebook but maybe somehow it is made in such an weird way that the headphones are an own output16:25
deemthat's what my user in in16:25
deembut i don't know which ones you exactly need, but sudo is a good choice i think :)16:25
Siecjedeem: How do I boot into a recovery shell?16:26
deemSiecje: there is an option for this in grub16:26
deemSiecje: you could also boot up a live system16:26
SiecjeI did `reboot` and I didn't get a GRUB menu16:27
deemSiecje: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCdRecovery16:27
JJBbyVamp898: 1, is this the correct way to reply to your comments or is there a specific way to address some one? 2, so I can check in the sound settings to see if there is a headphone output in there?16:27
Siecjedeem: Can I use any boot disk? The iso for Ubuntu is quite large.16:30
Vamp898JJBby: Most machines have several outputs. Like you have HDMI, then you have the analog output, maybe an optical and so on. Maybe, just guessing, your headphones are detected as their own output. In the Sound settings you can select the output that plays the sound16:31
Vamp898JJBby: actually my IRC clients highlights everything that says Vamp898, no matter where in the sentence it is and case also doesnt matter16:31
gayI used to have a boyfriend named "ubuntu" once16:32
JJBbyVamp898: ok, mine does as well when you use my name, just wasnt sure how it worked on the other side and if it needed any type of notation16:32
gayhe would "play the bongos" on my ass16:32
gayFAGS16:32
Vamp898I am offensive and i find this gay16:33
deemSiecje: if you know how to use it you may use another distribution. you only need a working shell to chroot into your installed system16:33
JJBbyVamp898 I am in the settings playing with all the output options and I have better sound now from speakers, just nothing happening for headphones, I wonder if the other jack ports are working. I am going to try using a Mic too now16:33
Siecjedeem: Thanks, I can't get it to boot off the CD.16:35
JJBbyvamp898: what is hdajackretask? I have a forum post for a similiar laptop using that to find the headphones? https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-2300693.html16:38
SiecjeOkay I got the grub menu16:39
deemSiecje: there should be an option called something like "recovery options". if you booted into this there is an option like "start a root shell"16:41
SiecjeHmm I don't know the root password.16:41
SiecjeCouldn't I have done switch user to root in the Desktop Environment if I knew the root password?16:42
deemthere should be no root password, cause ubuntu don't uses one16:42
deemnormally the only way to become root is by using sudo16:43
Siecjeokay I did this got get a root shell https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/135516:48
SiecjeI added my user to those groups but how do I shutdown or reboot?16:50
deemSiecje: use "reboot"16:50
Siecje"Failed to connect to bus: No such file or directory\n Failed to talk to init daemon."16:52
* Siecje fears his system is really messed up.16:52
deemSiecje: you could execute 'sudo grep user-setup /var/log/installer/syslog' and search for your user to see which groups ubuntu added at installation time. maybe i missed a group16:57
SiecjeOkay I tried every command and evetually VmWare said the Guest operating system CPU has been disabled and I did a shutdown in VmWare. On reboot I am my user and I can sudo ls16:57
Siecjedeem: Thank you so much for your patience.16:57
deemnp. you're welcome :)16:57

GoatGeekI'm running 16.04.3 LTS and trying to upgrade to the newest version of OpenSSH because the version in the repos are 7.2, which is not PCI compliant because there are active CVEs for versions <7.5.20:28
GoatGeekAnyway, I compiled it myself and did 'make install', and when I run `sshd -v` it shows the version as OpenSSH7.6p1, but when the server starts it seems to be the old binary, and the SSH handshake reports "SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_7.2p2 Ubuntu-4ubuntu2.2"20:29

Guillaume---So guys ? I have installed Ubuntu on my EZBook 3 Pro v4 which is an Appollo Lake Laptop. Everything is working pretty well. I use rEFInd as bootloader, i just installed a new kernel but i don't know how to add the boot entry for it to appear in rEFInd boot menu20:47
hdqnhello, on Ubuntu 16.04, does vim.basic come with syntax highlighting on by default, or have I enabled it accidentally?21:03
th3_g3ntl3m3nHello.21:04
hdqnI mean specifically for root, ie. `sudo visudo`21:04
th3_g3ntl3m3nIs there any place in which i can see when ubuntu will launch an update?21:05
desoleth3_g3ntl3m3n: what type of update? New version of Ubuntu, security updates, or "common" updates?21:09
yeatshdqn: it should Just Work™21:10
hdqnyeats: so the answer is "it does"?21:10
yeatshdqn: in my experience, yes21:10
hdqnbecause it *does* work for me, but it used to be disabled in earlier Ubuntu releases iirc21:10
hdqnok, then all's good and I'm not worried about having messed up the config myself. Thank you.21:11
hdqncheers folks o/21:11
Ircbaaohi guys i fcked up. i ran a rm -rf and remove an important directory. Can I get it back?21:18
Ircbaaoits my ubuntu server that this happened on21:19
GoatGeekalkisg, I'm sorry the internet for our entire office went out lol21:19
th3_g3ntl3m3n<GoatGeek> hello21:20
th3_g3ntl3m3nSomeone is downloading 4k ***21:20
th3_g3ntl3m3nOkno.21:20
th3_g3ntl3m3n<desole> Every type of update.21:21
GoatGeekOpenSSH < 7.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities - CVE-2016-10009, CVE-2016-10011, CVE-2016-10012, CVE-2016-1001021:22
tewardGoatGeek: pretty sure the Security Team is already aware.  No need to tell us, the Security Team is usually on top of this stuff already.21:24
Bashing-omIrcbaao: Yuk . See: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DataRecovery .21:27
brwoodsin 16.04.3, I have a bridged connection, but I'm getting a dhcp leaseon the interface and the bridge... I have "iface inferfacename inet manual" in there as well, any ideas?21:29
brwoodsthis is all in /etc/network/interfaces21:30
GoatGeekteward, I'm wondering because I didn't see any mention in the package changelog21:30
allureguys, port 53 still connects with this: https://paste.debian.net/1001741/21:31
allurewhere did I go wrong with the rule?21:31
tewardGoatGeek: http://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-security/cve/pkg/openssh.html has a pretty good 'status' listing.  However, patching things takes time, so... patience is a virtue.21:32
yeatsbrwoods: can you share a paste of your interfaces file (cleaned of any private info)?21:33
GoatGeekteward, thanks21:33
brwoodsyeats: this isn't the EXACT one, but the exact one doesn't have networking, this is a working copy I editted from from a Debian box http://paste.debian.net/1001744/21:35
alkisgGoatGeek: https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-security/cve/2016/CVE-2016-10009.html21:35
th3_g3ntl3m3nAnd... no one knows where i can see the changelog in my system?21:39
th3_g3ntl3m3nim using ubuntu 17.1021:39
th3_g3ntl3m3nWhere can i see the changlog?21:40
GoatGeekGeez, internet went out again21:40
yeatsbrwoods: the only thing we have different on bridged interfaces on a couple of working servers is that we have (the equivalent of) 'auto enp49s0' before the physical interface 'manual' line21:42
yeatsbrwoods: my example file: https://paste.debian.net/1001746/21:45
brwoodshrm21:46
brwoodsI'll try adding the auto line and see what happens21:46
TJ-brwoods: Are you sure systemd-networkd, or NetworkManager, aren't also trying to manage the interface as well as ifupdown ?21:49
brwoodsTJ-: there's no NM, haven't checked for systemd-networkd21:50
TJ-brwoods: no NM helps :) I use pure systemd-networkd on my 16.04's or bonding, no NM or ifupdown21:50
TJ-brwoods: e.g. https://paste.ubuntu.com/25904382/21:53
brwoodsthink I found the problem... I edited the /etc/dhcp/dhclient file...21:55
brwoodsTJ- and yeats: yeah, my edit in the dhclient.conf was what was doing it... I edited it trying to get soem virtual interfaces up and running and forgot about the edits... thank goodness for grep/ing /etc21:57
TJ-brwoods: this is where a git repo or similar config management system comes in so handy. I use git for for /etc/ with an inotify hook that auto-commits after every WRITE,CLOSE21:59
TJ-brwoods: I can trivally find/revert to previous state22:00
brwoodsI just comment heavily and use "USER EDITED" a lot  =]22:00
brwoodsnot the best thing I'd imagine, but it works well enough22:01
W4spDon't run starts as root.22:02
GoatGeekSo I compiled my own sshd and now I'm trying to get it to work in systemd. The server starts properly but systemd still says that it's 'starting'22:17

dalurkawhat do I need to do to get somebody to look at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/squid3/+bug/173841222:36
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1738412 in squid3 (Ubuntu) "Init script fails test on reload/restart because of faulty regex" [Undecided,New]22:36
dalurkaI have attached a patch and all22:36
TJ-!sru | dalurka22:37
ubottudalurka: Stable Release Update information is at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates22:37
TJ-dalurka: basic process is: 1) ensure the fix is in the current development release (Bionic 18.04), backport fix directly if possible to supported versions, request SRU22:38
hggdhdalurka: also it usually helps if you also report which version of Ubuntu, and the whole version string22:39
hggdhdalurka: right now, for reference, I cannot find any packag for squid3 that exactly matches the version in the bug22:40
dalurkahggdh: oh, ofcourse *facepalm*22:40
dalurkaI don't have access to the machine right now but will update it tomorrow22:41
dalurkaTJ-: will check that as well22:41
dalurkabut what is the proper channel? just attaching a patch to launchpad or is there a git repo of the packages?22:42
TJ-dalurka: for existing packages, the SRU process as described in the link22:43
dalurkaalso, the machine runs the latest xenial but I don't know more than that..as I said will update tomorrow22:43
dalurkaTJ-: thanks22:43
dalurkaTJ-: I will read it and take the apropriate actions :)22:43
hggdhdalurka: squid3 is in main, so you could check on #ubuntu-server22:44
dalurkahggdh: ok22:47
dalurkaTJ-: also, there might be an issue with checking in 18.04 as it might not use the init-script at all if there is a systemd.service written for it.. now it is only generated from the sysv init script22:50
dalurkawell I'll find out :)22:50
TJ-dalurka: in which case a direct patch, especially for such a trivial change, is going to be OK. The point of SRU is to ensure no regressions22:50
TJ-dalurka: you're fixing a regression in a regression patch :D22:51
dalurkayes :)22:51

init7Hi there I am runing one script of mine on my Ubuntu 14.04 LTS but when i try to run it shows me this error message: https://hastebin.com/luzadaduwa.pl23:30
Char|ieHi im looking for simple video editing software where I can simply open a file and clip it down to size23:31
nooryani84Ok, I'll just ask straight out:  I have an Asus laptop from 2014 and wonder how I can check if my UEFI or laptop is affected.   I read that both Acer and Toshiba laptops have been affected besides Lenovo.23:31
Char|iewhat would be the best program for this? Im trying to use kdenlive but it isnt easy to use23:31
Char|ieIt doesnt allow me to open a mp4 file only existing projects23:32
nooryani84Char|ie, video files I assume?23:32
typeVoidHave you tried Blender, Char|ie?23:32
Char|ielike its adobe photoshop or something :/23:32
Char|ievideo files yes23:32
Char|ieis Blender easy to use or will it force me to save in its propietary format?23:33
Char|ieand then use some retarded program to "export" it to the format I want?23:33
Char|ielike gimp does23:33
bacteria_Char|ie: just for resize ? have U tried ffmpeg ?23:33
Char|ieretarded23:33
nooryani84one second, let me find this app I have read good things about23:33
nooryani84https://github.com/mifi/lossless-cut23:33
typeVoid:D, Blender should be easy. It's mainly for film making and Visual Effects / 3d modeling and rendering but it can do what you want23:33
init7Hi there I am runing one script of mine on my Ubuntu 14.04 LTS but when i try to run it shows me this error message: https://hastebin.com/luzadaduwa.pl23:34
nooryani84If it's only cutting and you want lossless (fast, no re-encoding) https://github.com/mifi/lossless-cut23:34
TJ-!openshot | Char|ie23:34
nooryani84I believe this should do the job.23:34
typeVoidBut it seems as if lossless-cut would be better suited here23:34
TJ-!info openshot | Char|ie23:34
ubottuChar|ie: openshot (source: openshot): Create and edit videos and movies. In component universe, is optional. Version 1.4.3-1.2 (artful), package size 17088 kB, installed size 55704 kB23:34
typeVoidI'm trying to verify an email on a launchpad account, I've done so around 3 times and received 4 emails I clicked the links and a blank page shows up and my email is not verified, what steps should I take from here?23:34
typeVoid* I clicked the "verify email" button exactly 3 times23:35
nooryani84typeVoid, have you tried clearing the cookies/browser cache?23:35
nooryani84disable any adblockers etc23:35
TJ-nooryani84: how do you mean by 'affected'? The SPI 'bug' is only an issue if the kernel loads the SPI driver, which was added for the 4.13 kernel in 17.10. But the core problem is the PC firmware monitoring the SPI-NOR read/write bit and assuming any change means it has to reset the firmware configuration to defaults23:36
typeVoidI'll try that, I was using mobile and just recently booted to windows after a long time. I'll come back with results later23:36
Char|iedownloading now ill give it a go ty :D23:36
nooryani84TJ-, basically how do I know if it has bricked/changed anything on the firmware23:37
TJ-nooryani84: if it fails to work is a big clue :)23:37
nooryani84Sorry if I'm explaining this poorly23:37
nooryani84No I've been using the laptop since 17.10 was released, but I don't know if the UEFI has been affected by the SPI bug.23:39
TJ-nooryani84: from what I've read in most cases the problem isn't the firmware being erased/re-written, it's that the firmware sees the toggling of the read/wite enable bit as a signal to reset it's stored config, and losing that is what causes the PC to have various failures because ( it seems) when the bit is toggled the firmware also expects a new valid is going to be written by whatever toggled the bit ...23:39
TJ-nooryani84: ... in other words, the firmware assumes the tool in control of the SPI is the flash update software which is programmed to update firmware image + write new valid config, so doesn't fully reset to a valid config itself.23:40
nooryani84I haven't experienced any issues (that I know of)23:40
bacteria_Hi I'm looking for a opensource software for appointments ... like 4 sallon ... some1 have idea ??23:41
DaekdroomHello, #ubuntu. I've bought a new keyboard, but it seems the <Super> key for this model I have isn't working, I can't seem to grab its input with 'xev' or the control panel settings for keyboard shortcuts.23:42
nooryani84I don't have my laptop right here, but I'm going to try "cat /boot/config* | grep CONFIG_SPI_INTEL_SPI_PLATFORM" later23:43
nooryani84perhaps I'm looking at this the wrong way though23:44
posam i right to assume/observe that snap(py) packages can't be downloaded and install locally and manually?23:46
nooryani84TJ-, thanks for your help though I still don't know if my laptop is damaged.23:46
nooryani84I'll continue looking :)23:46
poswith no blabbering back and fourth with ub/cano servers?23:46
DaekdroomHuh, I was messing with the keyboard Fn key functions and somehow it started working.23:49
DaekdroomI'll leave it be, haha.23:49
nooryani84the <Super> key is a pain23:50
nooryani84i much prefer using a launcher like Albert / Ulauncher binded to CTRL+Space23:50

Char|ieis there a video app where I can edit videos and clip them by dragging a screened window on top of the video I want to clip?23:58
Char|ie<Char|ie> sort of like how a partition resize application works23:58
Char|ie<Char|ie> You just drag one marker as the start and another marker as the end. and thats the clip you want to keep.23:58
TJ-Char|ie: openshot lets you set the start and end markers on the timeline, and then 'cut' at each point, or drag the start/end markers23:59
Char|ieOpenshot is confusing lol23:59
Char|ieIm clicking on the timeline, or track. whatever some genius wants to call it. sigh23:59
