foormeahi. having an issue with luks on soft raid to be opened automatically via crypttab and a keyfile. the keyfile is stored in my ~ on a luks-ed lvm (standard encrypted lvm install). i'm pretty sure i've managed to do that before but i can't get it to work now. any idea?00:14
kaddihi i'm trying to install ubuntu but when i launch the flash drive it says kernel panic and that it couldn't find a partition to mount the OS too.. does that mean the flash drive is screwy?00:37
arktvrvseither flash drive is screwy or you burned the image wrongly00:55
tubalHello. Gnome-related question, I hope it's welcome here. I have an extension installed and enabled, and I would like to disable it. But I can't find any reference to it: it's not in ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions nor mentioned either in Tweaks or the web interface. I know I installed and enabled it. Any ideas about what gives here?01:00
tubalAlso not in /usr/share/...01:00
tubalWeird. I can't even find the extension on extensions.gnome.org. I wonder if it's been withdrawn, and whether that might be the cause of this.01:19
sazawalIs there a way to get a window position with xdotool, if I know the PID?01:25
arktvrvsi think xwininfo can do that01:29
arktvrvswait nm.. maybe not by pid01:30
sazawalarktvrvs, Yes xwininfo can do that for the active window. But what if the window is not active?01:31
arktvrvsapparently you can supply window id or name.01:33
sazawalarktvrvs, I tried this, xwininfo -id $(xdotool getactivewindow) and it works for me.01:33
ohnxhi! I updated to Artful the other day, and now when I boot ubuntu, I get a fuzzy purple screen. I can press CTRL-Alt-F2 to enter a terminal, but I can't seem to run `apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop`; I'm told that the reinstallation is not possible since the package can't be downloaded...01:33
ohnxdoes anyone have any idea what might be causing this problem?01:33
arktvrvscool01:34
arktvrvsmanpage says xdotool accepts --pid01:34
sazawalarktvrvs, Sorry but it didnt solve the problem, because it only works for the active window.01:35
sazawalarktvrvs, Yes, also I dont understand what is the utility of xdotool -search --pid $PID. I dont get any output when I use it on the terminal.01:36
arktvrvsxdotool search --pid <pid> appears to give a list of window ids.  putting one of these ids into xwininfo -id works as it should, for me01:41
sazawalarktvrvs, Oh right, I just checked it on a different application and it gave me a list. Now, I am thinking why I cannot see Imagemagick in System Monitor. So, it only works for the processes which I can see on System Monitor?01:44
arktvrvsThat I have no idea about01:44
sazawalI launched Imagemagick from terminal, with "display xyz.jpg" and got the PID of this process.01:44
sazawalAlrighty01:45

tubalSince no one has bitten this yet, I'll throw the broader issue out there. The gnome-shell memory leak. Bad. Pushes Gnome in the direction of unusable. Running 3.26 on U17.10. A lot of fingers point to the extensions system, or to particular ones. That's why I'm trying to disable the one I mentioned above.04:23
oerhekstubal, care to mention what gnome extention exactly?04:24
tubaloerheks: I'd like to, but I now have no way to know its name. But, it's a Intel CPU pstate throttle.04:25

leonardo98grumpkin: which port, i mean port number06:50
leonardo98grumpkin: how do i need to do that?06:53

markguy9Hello. Anyone out there who can help me with Bluetooth drivers on Ubuntu. Been using this OS for 7 years and I'm about to throw it out cause I have been struggling with the stupid bluetooth drivers for months. Pleeease07:30
alkisgGood morning all07:31
piercedwatergood morning07:32
bunnypunchermarkguy9 what is issue are you having?07:41
markguy9I connect my bluetooth headset and then then if I don't listen to music consistently, when I try play music again it is very laggy, if I try disconnect and reconnect it doesn't reconnect.07:44
bunnypuncherhave you tried reloading the kernel module?07:45
markguy9reloading the kernal07:46
markguy9is that like a reformat?07:46
markguy9haha07:46
bunnypuncherno like reloading the driver07:46
bunnypuncherDo you get any errors in the logs?07:46
markguy9I don't know which logs to look at07:46
bunnypuncheryou can look at the output of this command:    dmesg07:47
bunnypunchershortly after the problem happens07:47
bunnypuncheralso look in /var/log  directory and see if any of those files have errors07:48
markguy9These are my bluetooth packages I have purged and reinstalled all of them. blueman,bluetooth,bluez,bluez-obexd,gnome-bluetooth,indicator-bluetooth,libbluetooth3:amd64,libgnome-bluetooth13:amd64,pulseaudio-module-bluetooth07:48
bunnypuncherthe kernel keeps the state of a device and it seems the state of the usb headphones gets out of whack07:49
markguy9They're bluetooth headphones..07:49
bunnypuncherright but to the kernel it is a usb device07:50
markguy9Ah07:50
bunnypuncherwith an address and connection path yada yada07:50
markguy9can I restart that?07:50
bunnypuncheryes indeed you can07:50
markguy9Fair enough07:50
bunnypuncherthat would be the first thing to try07:50
phillHey guys. I want to setup python 3.5 in a venv on Artful how do I get python 3.5?07:50
markguy9How do I reset the usb devices?07:51
jjwaltonHello guys. I'm trying to understand what is the general setup for having system accounts (i.e. automated upgrades, scripts) to mail to mail server via SMTP. BUT WITH TLS AUTH. How would those accounts authenticate with the mail server as 'root' is a generic account (not using kerberos)07:51
bunnypunchertype this command:    lsusb07:51
bunnypuncherit will tell you about the usb devices it sees07:52
markguy9Ah my headset doesn't appear on the list :(07:52
bunnypuncheris it plugged in right now07:52
bunnypuncherit only shows actively connected devices07:52
markguy9Haha I can't plug it in...07:53
bunnypuncherso now if we load the right module you should be able to see it and use it07:53
markguy9I can't turn the bluetooth on, I think that's the problem07:54
markguy9If I restart I think it'll work07:55
markguy9But it's not really ideal to have to restart everytime I want to listen to music07:56
bunnypunchertry this command:    dmesg | grep Bluetooth07:56
markguy9https://pasteboard.co/GZvC1Kw.png07:58
bunnypunchersee those timeouts are your lag07:59
markguy9yea.08:00
markguy9I'm trying to turn blueman on now but it won't08:00
markguy9and I don't get any errors about it08:00
bunnypuncherok so try this08:00
bunnypunchermodprobe btusb08:00
bunnypuncheras root or sudo as needed08:01
markguy9That was quick08:01
markguy9but nothing happened I think08:01
markguy9haha08:01
bunnypuncherok try and replug them in08:02
markguy9I can't plug them in...08:02
bunnypunchererrr try and access them08:02
markguy9I can't do that either because the bluetooth won't turn on08:03
bunnypuncherok do:   sudo lsmod08:03
bunnypuncherthat will list if it was loaded or not08:04
bunnypunchersudo modprobe -r btusb08:05
bunnypuncherwill reload the running btusb if it is loaded08:05
markguy9I wonder if this has something to do with the problem https://pasteboard.co/GZvF4iH.png08:06
bunnypunchermight need to do that for pulseaudio-module-bluetooth also08:06
markguy9that did something!08:06
markguy9Took away the bluetooth08:07
bunnypuncherok now readd with:  sudo modprobe btusb08:07
markguy9Nah it won't turn on08:08
markguy9even sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth start does nothing08:09
bunnypuncherok looks like there are several mods we will need to do08:09
bunnypuncherbtusb , btrtl , btbcm, btintel. bluetooth08:10
bunnypuncherare the ones I have08:10
markguy9should I install them?08:10
markguy9Do you have bluez?08:10
bunnypuncherno but I'm not using bluetooth08:11
bunnypuncherso I don't have a similar config to work from08:11
markguy9Wow08:11
markguy9how are you managing to help then08:11
markguy9haha08:11
markguy9But Thank YOU!08:11
bunnypuncherI just guessing :)08:11
markguy9Your guess is probably better than mine08:12
bunnypuncherso try:  sudo moodprobe -r btusb btrl btbcm btintel bluetooth08:12
bunnypuncherthat unload them all08:12
bunnypuncherthen we modprobe them back in see if we can access bluethooth08:12
markguy9btrl not found08:12
markguy9FATAL: Module bluetooth is in use.08:13
bunnypuncherok so can't unload that one08:13
bunnypunchermaybe that is the problem one08:13
markguy9should I purge it?08:14
bunnypunchertry with just loading back the other four first08:14
bunnypuncher sudo moodprobe  btusb btrl btbcm btintel bluetooth08:15
bunnypuncherminus the bluetooh08:15
markguy9The command worked but didnt seem to change anything08:15
bunnypuncheryou can run lsusb between things to see if your device shows up08:16
bunnypuncherok so then bluetooth mod is probably the key then08:16
markguy9I guess so08:17
bunnypunchertry running dmesg again see if any errors from the loading and unloading08:21
bunnypuncheralso if you could bin paste output from:   lsmod08:22
bunnypuncherso I can get an idea of what modules you have that would be helpful08:22
bunnypuncherand output from:   sudo lshw08:24
bunnypuncherso I can tell what hardware you have08:24

markguy9StormWarrior: only if you send us that NewPair.pem file ;)08:57
StormWarriorah crap08:57
StormWarriornow I gotta change the ports08:57
StormWarriorand the username08:57
StormWarriorand the server ddns08:57
StormWarriorwhy am I so fuckin dumb :/08:57
markguy9Did you share that file?08:58
StormWarriornope08:58
StormWarriorI am not THAT dumb08:58
markguy9So then you're fine08:58
Neo1I installed ubuntu and couldn't work there, forever was struggling with OS...08:58
cuddlesquid>& /tmp/lsubuntu.log would be a simple way of logging08:58
bunnypuncherwell like mark said without the key won't be too much risk08:58
StormWarriorhmm08:58
StormWarriorso.. why isnt my rsync not working?08:59
StormWarrioris*08:59
markguy9So the bluetooth still won't turn on09:00
markguy9going to try check my main.conf file as well09:00
StormWarrior???09:01
StormWarrioranyone?09:01
NitrigaurUbuntu 17.10 .nVidia 384.90 . After last update both desktop and plain terminal have become utterly unusable, throwing NVRM XID errors all the time, corrupted graphic display. System hangs intermittently. Utter garbage.09:02
bunnypuncherI think the -e is just to the ssh program not the whole command09:02
bunnypuncherrsync -e "ssh -p 9999" /path/to/local_file domain.com:/path/to/remote_file09:03
NitrigaurI even had to resort to booting Windows of all things in order to start a bloody chat program... Windows works fine with the GPU, so it must be a software issue.09:03
bunnypuncherwould be example of using it that way09:04
bunnypuncherbut that is how you have the command09:04
StormWarriorI know.. and I can connect to the server with no issues.. it shows me the incremental file list..09:05
auronandaceNeo1: still trying to setup a server?09:05
Neo1auronandace: I want to install on virtual machine ubuntu or debian and put there my local sites instead WAMP09:06
bunnypuncherwhat shell are you using09:07
Neo1auronandace: WAMP works very slow, I want to check how will work virtual server09:07
markguy9guake09:07
Neo1auronandace: use VMware and now trying to install debian, debian is for professionals?09:07
StormWarriorbunnypuncher: bash09:07
NitrigaurNeo1, not really. Debian is quite usable as a home user.09:08
Neo1I've read in internet that debian is for professional and ubuntu is for newbie. Is it truth?09:08
StormWarriorubuntu is based on debian09:08
StormWarriorNeo1: use redhat :p09:08
Neo1Nitrigaur: yes, I think so, they has equal kernel, on each linux possible install the same apps09:08
bunnypuncheroh I should have seen it09:08
Neo1redhat is paid OS?09:09
bunnypuncherStorm it is the ./09:09
StormWarriorNeo1: not if you can get a copy of it from tpb :p09:09
StormWarriorbunnypuncher: ??09:09
StormWarriorbunnypuncher: ./?? elaborate please09:09
NitrigaurStormWarrior, not recommended, just use CentOS09:09
StormWarriorUse Kali..09:09
bazhangStormWarrior, dont recommend that here, neither tpb nor redhat09:09
StormWarriorbazhang: ok09:10
Neo1StormWarrior: I'm web developer and want use something... would be good to use linux, but I not prepared to drop windows :)09:10
NitrigaurIf you need the RedHat core, use CentOS, but his channel discusses Ubuntu09:10
bunnypuncherjust try putting the ./unsorted/Bitcoin-TheFutureOfMoney in quotes09:10
Neo1CSgO09:10
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, lol09:10
Neo1how I'll play in csgo or themfortles2 ?09:10
bazhangNitrigaur, lets get back to ubuntu support only09:10
Nitrigaurbazhang, I agree.09:11
bunnypuncher"./unsorted/Bitcoin-TheFutureOfMoney"09:11
markguy9Neo1: Just don't play games anymore09:11
StormWarriorbunnypuncher: not working09:11
SpookanNeo1: Then you should just use Windows then.09:11
Neo1markguy9: I'm going to create trade steam bot in the future09:12
StormWarriori know I am messing it up somewhere..09:12
bunnypuncheris /home/ubuntu/unsorted/Bitcoin*09:12
bunnypunchera number of files09:12
StormWarrioryes09:12
Neo1Spookan: yes, windows cool, but I want to be cool developer as well )09:12
StormWarriorhence -r09:12
NitrigaurHow can I purge and reinstall nVidia drivers on Ubuntu 17.10. I can barely get a normal (non-X) terminal to work right now.09:13
StormWarriorBitcoin* is actually the name of the directory(* is the glob)09:13
bunnypuncherdon't do it that way09:13
bunnypuncherdo /home/ubuntu/unsorted/Bitcoin/09:13
StormWarriornot working09:13
bunnypuncheror you can just leave off the * it won't need it09:13
bunnypuncherreally do you get any output?09:14
StormWarriorTried that too09:14
StormWarrioryes09:14
StormWarriorlist of all the files in the remote server09:14
Neo1I've read about docker, people says it's better than use server on virtual machine? is it true? docker it's like server?09:15
StormWarriorI have some files in local folder named Bitcoin-TheFutureOfMoney already dowloaded from the remote server09:15
Neo1docker or virgine09:15
StormWarriorNeo1: docker is a container.. a kind of virtualization09:15
geirhaYou know that by default rsync only copies files if they are newer than the destination, or have different size than the destination, right?09:15
Neo1StormWarrior: online container?09:15
StormWarriorYES!!!!09:15
bunnypuncherit work?09:15
StormWarriorSo there are close to 20 files in the source and only 5 in the destination09:16
StormWarriorno..09:16
Neo1StormWarrior: there guy said that he use docker on the work with ubuntu and in home with window and didn't have problems09:16
StormWarriorNeo1: dude I am fucked up09:16
StormWarriorNeo1: with all due respects.. can you ask someone else?09:16
bunnypuncheris there anything strange on the remote host file perm issues09:16
bunnypuncherstrange char in the names09:16
StormWarriorno.. none whatsoever.....09:16
bunnypuncherextended attributes on the files09:16
markguy9rsync -v --stats --progress09:16
markguy9tail -f /tmp/rsync.log09:17
StormWarrioras I said.. I am getting a list of all the files while theoritically, I could only get a list of only files NOT in my local directory09:17
geirhaso it doesn't list the 15 extra files?09:17
NitrigaurStormWarrior, if you are running SELinux, be sure to check the audit log as well.09:17
Neo1for windows docker is bad supported and has some errors, but probably it's solved now, that article is old was written more than 1 year ago09:17
StormWarriorgeirha: IT is listing all 20 files09:17
geirhaso it's working09:17
StormWarriorthats my point09:17
Neo1ok, I'll silence09:17
markguy9Try this to get more information from the rsync https://askubuntu.com/questions/98597/increase-verbosity-of-running-rsync-process09:17
geirhajust remove the dry-run flag to make it actually do the copy09:17
bunnypuncheralso lsattr the files09:18
StormWarriorok..09:18
markguy9haha09:18
StormWarriorah09:18
StormWarriorI fucking hate my brain09:18
NitrigaurHow can I purge and reinstall nVidia drivers on Ubuntu 17.10? I can barely get a normal (non-X) terminal to work right now. Not even through ssh.09:19
StormWarriorits working.. the increamental list means exactly that.. its INCREAMENTAL09:19
StormWarriormarkguy9 geirha bunnypuncher thanks guys09:19
bunnypunchercool good luck with making a killing in bitcon :)09:19
markguy9geirha legend haha09:20
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, interesting typo there, or is it? ;-)09:20
bunnypuncheryea I noticed that but laughed so didn't correct it09:20
StormWarrior:/09:20
bunnypunchermarkguy9 you get your config file figured out?09:21
markguy9No :(09:21
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, what re you trying to achieve?09:21
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, what are you trying to achieve?09:21
markguy9Trying to turn on bluetooth09:21
markguy9I think my drivers are a mess09:22
markguy9or my config filoes09:22
markguy9files09:22
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, do you use bluez or another Bluetooth stack?09:22
markguy9Yea I got bluez09:22
markguy9but I think that is the problem09:22
NitrigaurWhat device are you trying to get to work?09:22
markguy9heaphones09:22
bunnypuncherNitrigaur here is a list of his modules https://pastebin.com/esFLymd009:22
markguy9headphones09:22
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, thx for the link09:23
markguy9Thanks bunny :)09:23
bunnypuncherseems newer versions moved config to /etc/bluetooth/main.conf09:23
bunnypuncherlike you have it and did away with audio.conf09:23
markguy9bunnypuncher* haha09:23
bunnypuncherlol the name still gets me sometimes even after using it for long time09:24
bunnypunchermy wife is aka Mrs bunnypuncher09:24
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, I notice you have both the Intel and Broadcomm modules loaded. They might conflict with each other. Did you try unloading the one that is not appliccable to your Bluetooth device?09:25
markguy9I have not09:25
markguy9I don't even know how you know that09:25
markguy9My general fix for linux based issues is to try and apt-get install more packages.09:25
bunnypunchersee looks like Nitrigaur has more experience with bluetooth I just don't use it09:25
markguy9Gets me into **** sometimes09:25
bunnypuncherI had him try and unload and reload the btusb stuff09:26
markguy9bunnypuncher I really appreciate the help, you taught me a quite a few things.09:26
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, just use rmmod <module you want to remove from running kernel>09:26
bunnypuncherlol09:26
Neo1who did try to run Photoshop in linux in virtual box?09:26
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, don´t be afraid to make a mistake, it´s not permanent.09:26
markguy9This is a little noob but I don't know which one to remove09:26
bunnypuncheryw it is a solveable problem just need get the modules and conf right09:27
bunnypuncherso don't throw computer out yet ;)09:27
markguy9haha if you told me that 6 months ago I would have agreed with you09:27
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, please pastebin the output of lsusb | grep -i blu (if it´s a USB device) or lscpi| grep -i blu if it´s a builtin device.09:28
markguy9I'm starting to lose faith09:28
markguy9no need for pastebin. only one line comes up. Bus 003 Device 008: ID 045e:0745 Microsoft Corp. Nano Transceiver v1.0 for Bluetooth09:28
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, Microsoft??09:28
markguy9I dunno why that comes up?09:28
markguy9Take that name off of my ubuntu :D09:29
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, did you use an encapsulated Windows driver?09:29
markguy9I really wanna say that I didn't09:29
markguy9But when I panic I install everything09:29
bunnypuncherTry to install bluez-utils and connect headset with bluetoothctl09:30
bunnypuncherthat gives some good output of what is going on09:30
markguy9I have tried that, it says it doesn't exist09:30
markguy9here are my packages https://pasteboard.co/GZwdCEx.png09:31
bunnypuncherbluez-tools - Set of tools to manage Bluetooth devices for linux09:31
bunnypuncheris the ubuntu version09:31
bunnypuncherso guess it varies between distros09:31
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, nothing strange there.09:32
markguy9Cool, busy installing :)09:32
bunnypuncheroh this is nice they have bluez-dbg driver with debugging symbols09:32
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, yes, nice touch there09:32
markguy9haha I have no idea what the means09:32
markguy9The problem I'm having right now is ridicules though09:33
markguy9the bluetooth wont even turn on09:33
bunnypuncheryou could load that and attach gdb (GNU debugger) to the module or take memory dump and trace the stack09:33
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, it means you can use that driver and get some useful debugging info while trying to debug an application that uses Bluetooth09:33
NitrigaurMainly for developers.09:33
bunnypuncherbut before going that far try:  bluez-tools09:34
bunnypuncherfirst09:34
markguy9I don't know how to 'try' it09:34
bunnypuncheroh:  sudo apt-get install bluz-tools09:35
markguy9Oh yea i did that09:35
bunnypuncherthen we can use bluetoothctl09:35
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, please open a xterminal and enter: watch -n2 -d dmesg . Please put the terminal on top and then try to activate Bluetooth.09:35
markguy9Process '/bin/hciconfig hci0 up' failed with exit code 1.09:35
markguy9why xterminal?09:36
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, try journalctl -xe09:36
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, so you can keep it on top of your desktop environment. It doesn´t have to be xterm, it can also be Gnome or QT-based, as long as it is a graphical (Xorg) terminal.09:37
markguy9I use guake09:38
markguy9is that fine? haha09:38
markguy9https://pastebin.com/0iAZxLcX output from tournal09:38
markguy9journal*09:38
bunnypuncherDec 23 11:35:01 laptop kernel: usbcore: registered new interface driver btusb09:41
bunnypuncherDec 23 11:35:03 laptop kernel: Bluetooth: hci0 command 0x1001 tx timeout09:41
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, it is fine to use guake. I think I am beginning to understand what is happening here. Your computer has a builtin Bluetooth radio (the Microsoft one) and you have just inserted an USB-based Bluetooth device with an Atheros chipset.09:41
bunnypuncherthis is the issue I think it has hardware address09:41
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, Those radios might conflict with each other.09:41
markguy9Okay lets delete them09:42
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, no!09:42
markguy9Nope09:42
markguy9lets keep them09:42
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, don´t jump to conclusions please.09:42
markguy9Sorry :(09:43
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, you could unload the Microsoft driver by issueing: sudo rmmod btintel09:43
markguy9I haven't inserted any usb bluetooth devices though...09:44
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, hmm... In that case it´s an internal device. That´s odd, why would you ever need two bt radio´s in one computer?09:45
markguy9I don't know if my mouse is bluetooth.09:45
markguy9I have removed it anyway09:45
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, is your mouse by any chance a MS Mouse?09:45
bunnypunchercan you pastebin the /etc/bluetooth/main.conf file09:45
markguy9Nah the mouse was e-blue09:46
markguy9My keyboard is microsoft...09:46
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, is it a wireless keyboard?09:46
markguy9It is09:46
markguy9But it hasn't broken throughout this whole process09:46
Nitrigaurbt based?09:46
markguy9including my purging all bluetooth drivers..09:46
markguy9I don't know if its bluetooth09:47
markguy9its MC wireless comfort keyboard 500009:47
NitrigaurIn that case it´s probably another RF-link or you would loose the connection.09:47
markguy9pastebin of the main.conf https://pastebin.com/STY0jGbE09:47
bunnypuncheryea looks like a few items in there refer to device id09:48
bunnypuncher#DeviceID = bluetooth:1234:5678:abcd09:49
bunnypuncherisn't set09:49
markguy9I'm trying to find a non wireless keyboard09:49
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, not they don´t it´s just an example until you remove the pound sign.09:50
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, no they don´t it´s just an example until you remove the pound sign.09:50
bunnypuncherright but it needs to be set for it to work doesn't it09:50
bunnypuncherhis config is not set09:50
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, it´s not modified, which means it´s using default values.09:51
markguy9I think I'm going to try to restart quickly09:51
bunnypuncherright from the first load of the module it times out trying to talk to a device09:51
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, true.09:51
bunnypuncherbut the kernel isn't picking up the correct device id09:51
NitrigaurIsn´t it? It detects the Atheros Alaska 2006 chipset.09:52
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, and then it tries to address the device using the std. btusb module.09:53
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, which fails.09:53
bunnypuncherI agree09:54
markguy9_I'm back09:54
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, welcome back09:54
markguy9_Thanks :)09:54
bunnypuncherso a conflict between drivers or unknown device id09:54
NitrigaurYou probably have two chat windows open, you an underscore added right now.09:54
markguy9_Okay restart didn't help at all09:54
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_,  ^09:54
NitrigaurYou probably have two chat windows open, you have an underscore added right now.09:55
markguy9_haha I didn't leave the chat before I restarted.09:55
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, I agree with your assessment.09:56
bunnypuncherhave you tried:   hcitool scan09:56
markguy9_Device is not available: No such device09:56
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, did you check the battery level on your headphones?09:57
markguy9_I'm sorry, I should have come straight here, I think I have probably made the problem so much worse09:57
markguy9_Battery is fine, I cant even turn on bluetooth right now09:57
markguy9_therefore I cant pair or connect09:57
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, sounds reasonable.09:57
bunnypuncheryea to be on the safe side maybe we should start from scratch09:58
markguy9_Like reformat? :o09:58
bunnypuncherremove all the existing packages, install them fresh and make sure we don't have some "cruft" that got in from previous attempts at fixing it09:58
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, a dpkg-reconfigure bluez might do the trick.09:58
bunnypuncherno don't need to reformat09:59
bunnypuncherthis isn't windows09:59
NitrigaurHehe09:59
markguy9_hahahaa09:59
markguy9_mark@laptop:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure bluez [sudo] password for mark:  initctl: Unable to connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket /com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused insserv: warning: script 'plexmediaserver' missing LSB tags and overrides insserv: Default-Start undefined, assuming empty start runlevel(s) for script `plexmediaserver' insserv: Default-Stop  undefined, assuming empty stop  runlevel(s) for script `plexmediase09:59
markguy9_sorry I should have done paste bin09:59
bunnypunchersince we might be in an unknown state with the packages due to previous fix attempts10:00
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, try purging all bluetooth related packages and then reinstalling them10:00
bunnypunchersince we can't get the device id with hcitool I think that is the best bet10:01
bunnypuncheryea it only takes a second10:01
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, Purging will also delete any stray config files...10:01
bunnypuncherwell couple of minutes10:01
markguy9_No problem will do that now10:01
markguy9_Just freaks me out donig that cause it removes the network-manager and that's scary when that happens10:01
bunnypuncherwe need to the device id from dmesg / hcitool / somewhere without then the modules are not scanning properly10:02
bunnypuncherI might see if I can grab my son's usb head phones10:03
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, you might try booting from a live DVD to see if that makes any difference.10:03
bunnypunchersee if I can make similar conofig10:03
markguy9_I'd have to write a boot drive, so that won't be quick10:03
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, apt-get install bt-foobar bt-conflicts10:04
bunnypuncherlol yea but least this is a interesting issue10:04
bunnypuncherI like these kinds10:04
NitrigaurIt sure is :-)10:04
NitrigaurI feel a bit said typing this from Win8.1 :-/10:04
markguy9_Haha I'm so happy you guys find this issue interesting10:05
NitrigaurI feel a bit sad typing this from Win8.1 :-/10:05
markguy9_It's was soul crushing when I was trying to fix it on my own10:05
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, nah, you probably learned a lot during that process.10:05
bunnypuncherwell I'm a kernel hacker kinda person and don't need too often in my day to day life so10:06
bunnypuncherwe could break out the heavy guns and get dtrace installed10:06
bunnypuncherand build kernel with debug symbols and track it down that way10:06
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, in that case, could you help troubleshoot a troublesome Ubuntu install with a corrupt GPU driver (even non-Xorg)?10:07
markguy9_wow10:07
TJ-no need for building with debug symbols these days, just attach an eBPF trace with systemtap, etc.10:07
bunnypunchersure that might be fun one10:07
bunnypuncherI will say it has been a while I'm coming back to linux kernel from 2.4 / 2.6 daysw10:08
bunnypuncherso still getting up to speed on changes10:08
NitrigaurWhat did you use in the meantime, *BSD?10:08
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, or just using the kernel as a general user, without the kernel hacking?10:09
bunnypuncherI was in the system engineering / dev ops kind of role with Solaris E15ks10:09
Markguy9I'm back10:09
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, I used to work with FreeBSD, but let´s get back ontopic :-)10:10
bunnypuncherNah compay and winblows desktops and servers were Sun10:10
Neo1why in debian doesn't work sudo and gksudo? I can't go there like root from start?10:10
bunnypuncherso just didn't use it much for a whle10:10
bunnypuncherlove the BSD10:10
Markguy9But I can't open system settings anymore :o10:10
NitrigaurMarkguy9, hmm? What happens if you try that?10:11
bunnypunchersystem settings?10:11
NitrigaurAny errors?10:11
bunnypuncherlike the control panel10:11
Markguy9Like the gui10:11
Markguy9where I put on bluetooth10:11
Markguy9reinstall unity-control-center?10:11
NitrigaurMarkguy9, what version of Ubuntu are you running?10:12
bunnypunchersee if you can attach it via cmd line:   bluetoothctl10:12
TJ-Markguy9: use the command-line, it's much easier and more direct!10:12
Markguy916.0410:12
TJ-Markguy9: "bluetoothctl" then "power on"10:12
TJ-Markguy9: then "show" to report info on the BT controller in the PC10:12
Markguy9TJ haha I've lost all ubuntu settings now... I don't mind fixing bluetooth in terminal but I would like to have the rest back10:13
NitrigaurMarkguy9, ah OK, should have stayed on that version. I jumped ship to 17.10 because of more modern applications. I regret my decision...10:13
bunnypuncheryea I have lot of issues with 17.10 not being supported by dev tools10:13
Markguy9Yea I can't upgrade to 17 cause there is a VPN that I need for work that doesn't work on 17 haha10:13
KristjanMy name is Kristjan. I am in urgent need for money. Please send me bitcoins. My bitcoin address: 167D9oFBSnyNSRoBNcscNDQb7KdK2BhfKg. You can also send to my paypal account10:13

TJ-Markguy9: a workaround is to create a new user account, add that user to 'sudo' group, just to get stable10:13

NitrigaurMarkguy9, when uninstalling bluetooth packages, did you perhaps also remove the ubuntu-desktop package?10:14
Markguy9Probably10:14
TJ-CoJaBo: don't worry, freenode will k-line that user very soon. it's a repeat offender10:14
bunnypuncherdon't worry that can be fixed too10:14
Markguy9yup it was gone10:14
Markguy9hahaha10:14
CoJaBoTJ-: They don't seem to actually enforce that most of the time :/10:14
NitrigaurMarkguy9, these dependencies are getting kind of ridiculous lately.10:15
TJ-"ubuntu-desktop" is just a meta-package though, it won't actually remove anything - it just depends on all the required bits for desktop10:15
NitrigaurTJ-, true10:15
bunnypuncherI'm finding some things work best still on 14.0410:15
Markguy9yay10:15
Markguy9system settings is fixed10:15
TJ-CoJaBo: For this one, so far, they've been k-lining it quite promptly... it hits all popular channels once a day at least10:15
NitrigaurMarkguy9, what did you do to fix it?10:15
Markguy9sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop10:16
bunnypuncherthrew chick bones on top of the computer and did voodoo dance ?10:16
bunnypuncherah yea your method probably work better10:16
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, Fie!, you might cause this guy/ gal to damage his/her laptop!10:16
Nitrigaur;-)10:17
TJ-Just in time to get a new one for xmas then :P10:17
NitrigaurHaha10:17
Markguy9So which pkgs should I reinstall?10:18
Markguy9any chance I can get away with not having bluez?10:18
TJ-Markguy9: we had a similar issue with Bluetooth a few days ago, connection timeouts/failing to connect (to a BT speaker in that case). Turned out to be a PC firmware bug in ACPI DSDT (power/configuration) which there is a workaround for. You may be experiencing the same thing10:19
NitrigaurTJ-, I once pulled a prank on someone by autostarting a fake Bluescreen on Win95: ¨Fatal error at E04B:34ED Incompetent user, please replace user and press any key to continue¨ at his birthday. Luckily the guy could take a joke ;-)10:19
bunnypuncherisn't there a firmware update package related to this?10:20
Markguy9hahaha thats awesome10:20
TJ-Nitrigaur: that was a pretty comon prank :)10:20
bunnypuncherNitrigaur lol still would be funny10:20
Markguy9I am using an ASUS10:20
TJ-Markguy9: read and apply workaround - if this works it saves you a lot of bother. If it doesn't fix BT it'll likely still make your PC behave better! http://iam.tj/prototype/enhancements/Windows-acpi_osi.html10:20
NitrigaurTJ-, neh, the more common one would be to replicate the WinNT4 logon screen With the tantilising ¨Press ctrl-Alt-Del¨ to login. You can imagine what happens when you try that on 9x10:21
bunnypunchersudo apt-get install blueman bluez bluetooth pulseaudio-module-bluetooth10:21
bunnypuncheris my guess10:21
Markguy9Bunnypuncher Eish, that was the road I went down a hour ago haha10:22
bunnypuncheroh:  sudo apt-get install bluz-tools10:22
NitrigaurTJ-, yes , tried that one as well. Resulted in not being able to put my computer into sleep mode anymore.10:22
bunnypuncheryea but you said you should have came here first10:22
Markguy9haha true10:22
bunnypuncherthis is just to ensure there isn't unexpect state we aren't aware of10:23
TJ-Nitrigaur: that's very unusual, since it enables the 'best' configuration10:23
NitrigaurACPI can be quite hard to troubleshoot and throws vague bugs.10:23
bunnypuncherthese types of issues do make me love my BSD based macbook even more :)10:24
TJ-Nitrigaur: I've been working on it since 2007 so quite familiar with it. We have a lot of debug info available in kernel10:24
NitrigaurTJ-, I know, I read the article and thought it was brilliant and it worked for a while too, but some upddate of Ubuntu disabled it again somehow.10:24
Markguy9The weird thing is that I don't have any of those addons installed and my bluetooth still doesn't turn on10:24
Nitrigaur17.10 is not quite stable for me.10:24
TJ-Nitrigaur: ahhh, probably something removed the setting from /etc/default/grub10:25
bunnypuncherstill need to load them10:25
NitrigaurAnd that´s putting it mildly. Probably some weird GPU driver issue. Linus was right to shake his fist at nVidia.10:25
bunnypuncherand enable the systemd script10:25
TJ-Markguy9: show us "pastebinit <( rfkill list )"10:25
Markguy9everything says no10:26
Markguy9computer says no10:26
NitrigaurTJ-, yes, I can inspect the startup line in grub to see if the workaround disappeared from it.10:26
bunnypuncherwould still need to do: systemctl enable bluethooth10:26
TJ-Markguy9: right, but I want to see the actual output, with names (sometimes there are multiple nodes for the same device)10:26
bunnypunchersystemctl start bluetooth10:26
Markguy9got you10:27
NitrigaurMarkguy9, splendid, so your headphones are working and you hear a clear voice in stereo saying ¨No¨? That means you´ve cracked it! :-P10:27
bunnypuncherwe need to get the device ID and see what the kernel thinks it is10:27
bunnypunchervs what it should be10:27
bunnypunchersince they weren't in sync before10:27
TJ-Markguy9: with this kind of debugging it's extremely important to collect exact and complete data - the smallest difference can be the vital clue10:27
Markguy9https://pasteboard.co/GZwAHT2.png10:27
TJ-bunnypuncher: we have it: "idVendor=13d3, idProduct=3402"10:28
bunnypuncherhcitool scan10:28
=== sdfgsdfg is now known as dfgsgg232452
bunnypuncheroh greate10:28
bunnypunchera bunny WILL thank you10:28
TJ-And there we go! we have TWO nodes for the same device10:28
NitrigaurMarkguy9, you´ve made a typo10:28
Markguy9oh no10:29
NitrigaurMarkguy9, hint: Bluetooth is not related to an ancient Egyptian god.10:29
Markguy9please don't tell me this is all cause of a typo10:29
NitrigaurMarkguy9, bluetooth instead of bluethooth10:29
TJ-Markguy9: "asus-bluetooth" and "hci0" are going to conflict in some cases; "asus-bluetooth" is a 'platform' device, related to the ACPI config10:30
bunnypuncheryea Ancient Egyptian god wouldn't like being probed all the time with modprobe commands10:30
Markguy9haha10:30
Markguy9I'm not seeing what you oaks are seeing10:30
bunnypunchernot that bluetooth likes it much better10:30
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, in your case he would probably get punched.10:30
bunnypuncherlol10:30
Markguy9oh i see haha10:31
TJ-Markguy9: what's the make/model of this PC?10:31
Markguy9thats better10:31
Markguy9Synchronizing state of bluetooth.service with SysV init with /lib/systemd/systemd-sysv-install... Executing /lib/systemd/systemd-sysv-install enable bluetooth10:31
Markguy9Give me a second10:31
Markguy9its Asus ROG10:31
Markguy9g55 or something10:31
Markguy9will get it now10:31
NitrigaurMarkguy9, just wondering. Is this a clean install or did you upgrade from a previous version of Ubuntu?10:32
Markguy9Asus G551JM-DM118H10:32
Markguy9Upgrade from 14.0410:32
TJ-Markguy9: OK, what does "sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name" say  too?10:32
Markguy9G551JM10:32
TJ-Markguy9: great, they agree :)10:33
NitrigaurTJ-, wow, never heard of that command.10:33
NitrigaurTJ-, and I´m hacking Linux since 1997...10:33
TJ-Nitrigaur: dmidecode is often vital, even tells you about RAM slots, etc.10:33
Markguy9I don't think its a hardware problem though10:33
Markguy9cause it was working before10:33
Markguy9and it was workingish on 14.0410:34
bunnypuncherha got you beat by a bit started in 1994 at college10:34
Markguy9but I wasn't using bluez on 14.0410:34
TJ-Markguy9: no, but we need to know the exact devices to know which drivers/configs should be active10:34
NitrigaurTJ-, I should probably read it´s manpage. sounds interesting.10:34
bunnypuncheror means I'm older fart10:34
TJ-You're all babies! I was writing games engines in 1982 :)10:34
NitrigaurTJ-, hail!10:35
bunnypuncherwow 1982 I was just making peeks and pokes in basic on my Vic 2010:35
Markguy9should I still be doing this? http://iam.tj/prototype/enhancements/Windows-acpi_osi.html10:35
NitrigaurMarkguy9, definitely10:35
TJ-Markguy9: oh yes, that is very important.10:35
TJ-Markguy9: which kernel is in use ("uname -r") ?10:36
Markguy94.4.0-103-generic10:36
Markguy9I love you questioning style.. you ask the question and then answer the question that I would have been about to ask you. haha10:36
TJ-Markguy9: as the system is now 16.04, it would be worth installing one of the later kernels from the hardware enablement stack10:36
TJ-!info hwe | Markguy910:37
ubottuMarkguy9: Package hwe does not exist in artful10:37
TJ-Markguy9: I try to share my thinking and help you learn why10:37
bunnypuncherhere is interesting fact I was getting back into building kernel adding options yada yada so I downloaded linux 1.0 and it was so much small than today by like 10,000 times I recall the math worked about out10:37
NitrigaurTJ-, he is not running Artful...10:37
Markguy9That's why I appreciate it.10:37
Markguy9What's artful?10:37
TJ-Nitrigaur: it's 16.04 isn't it?10:37
NitrigaurMarkguy9, 17.1010:37
bunnypuncherand today there are 9000 + config options10:37
NitrigaurTJ-, yes.10:37
bunnypuncherand linux 1.0 less than 100010:37
Markguy9Oh right10:38
NitrigaurTJ-, I´m running Artful though.10:38
Markguy9I'm on Xenial Xerus10:38
NitrigaurTJ-, or at least until my GPU drivers borked my system to it´s present unusable state. Not even root term without X works, even not remotely through SSH.. I´m typing this from Win8.1 (;_;)10:39
bunnypuncheryou guys hear dtrace is out and working on linux now?  I was testing it out on 14.0410:39
TJ-Nitrigaur: right, in 1604 we have 4.13 kernel with "linux-lowlatency-hwe-16.04-edge" (or linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge)10:39
bunnypuncherlike 300,000 probes you can get from the kernel10:40
NitrigaurTJ-, sounds spiffy and great for JACK.10:40
TJ-Nitrigaur: if SSH isn't working something more than the GPU driver is broken, unless systemd is getting stuck before starting network services10:40
bunnypuncheryou sure it isn't config issue or something with dbus10:41
=== dfgsgg232452 is now known as sdfgsdfg23
TJ-bunnypuncher: debugging. hopefully you can read this without a sub. https://lwn.net/Articles/740157/10:41
NitrigaurTJ-, no, boot screen manages to start Network services. (It takes some time doing that, but my network is up). When my system hangs on a graphical DE, Xorg uses 100% CPU and my fan blows like crazy. Sounds like a race condition...10:42
TJ-bunnypuncher: and this announcement for eBPF in systemtap https://lwn.net/Articles/691341/10:42
bunnypuncherthere is kerenl option to debug to usb port10:43
Markguy9I've done the acpi stuff10:43
bunnypuncherhaven't tried it myself it10:43
TJ-Markguy9: and rebooted ?10:43
Markguy9Nope hahaha10:43
Markguy9brb10:43
Markguy9Are you guys using an IRC Client on ubuntu?10:43
Markguy9I'm on http://webchat.freenode.net/10:43
NitrigaurI´m on win8.1 right now.10:43
Markguy9Nitriguar :( I'm sorry10:44
NitrigaurThank you for your sympathy :-)10:44
bunnypuncherthat is cool those are the things I'm still catching up on10:44
TJ-Nitrigaur: do a boot with "systemd.unit=multi-user.target" on the kernel command line via editing at the GRUB boot menu, that'll prevent the GUI from starting.10:44
Markguy9If its any consolation I also can't use stupid nvidias drivers10:44
Markguy9So I also hate nvidia10:44
NitrigaurTJ- will do10:44
TJ-bunnypuncher: also, for static debugging via a printk() extension, read up on dynamic_debug (/sys/kernel/debug/dynamic_debug/ )10:45
bunnypuncherNitrigaur do you have nomodeset in grub boot config10:46
eFfeMHi, I did an apt-get update; apt-get upgrade and now after booting my screen is blank with a cursor top-left. I can still ssh into the system; any clue/pointer on how to resolve this?10:46
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, I do10:46
TJ-bunnypuncher: for D.D. read the kernel's Documentation/admin-guide/dynamic-debug-howto.rst10:46
bunnypuncherNitrigaur you were right that is starting to sound like interesting problem10:46
eFfeMbtw thiis kubuntu and I see a number of kept-back packges related to mesa and plasma10:47
bunnypuncherTJ- last week I build the 4.15 kernel docs and have been reading up on it10:47
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, I might even resort to do a clean reinstall pf 16.04 (not touching 17.10 again...)10:47
bunnypuncherI'm amazed at how different it is from the 2.6 days10:47
TJ-Nitrigaur: sometimes 'nomodeset' can actually cause later problems! What I generally do is disable GRUB's graphical mode (/etc/default/grub "GRUB_TERMINAL=console") so there's no need for early mode-witching10:47
bunnypuncherNitrigaur that is the best road really10:48
TJ-bunnypuncher: Yes, it's wonderful now, feels liberating doesn't it?10:48
bunnypuncherlook more is available to look into issues10:48
bunnypunchera lot10:48
TJ-eFfeM: try "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" to get those held-back packages10:48
NitrigaurTJ-, bunnypuncher, I´ll go with your advice. Hope to see you seen from within a stable Linux environment.10:49
NitrigaurTJ-, bunnypuncher, I´ll go with your advice. Hope to see you soon from within a stable Linux environment.10:49
eFfeMTJ-: will try10:49
bunnypuncheroh couse being linux user since 1996 you have good backups right ?  ;)10:49
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, I do.10:49
bunnypuncherI fell in love with dtrace back in 1998 and have wait so long for linux to get it10:50
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, I don´t backup my OS though, just my personal files.10:50
bunnypuncherright no need to back up os files10:50
bunnypuncherpackages reinstall those10:50
markguy9I'm back10:50
bunnypuncherand now linux also has ZFS10:50
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, sometimes I make a tbz of my etc directory before doing something adventurous there, but that´s about it when it comes to OS files.10:51
bunnypuncherso I'm happy cample ZFS / dtrace / lots of tools I'm still getting the hang of10:51
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, I use btrfs instead of ZFS.10:51
markguy9Well something is working now10:51
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, great, please share it with us10:52
markguy9I don't want to celebrate prematurely .. but !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!10:52
TJ-hehehe oh go on :D10:52
bunnypuncheroh I don't agree with that choice it has lot of features , good design but I read about so many issues10:52
markguy9music is playing10:52
bunnypuncherwith it I'm afraid to try it10:52
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, on your headphones? that´s great news!10:53
markguy9Yes it is10:53
eFfeMTJ-: thanks that did it!!!!!10:53
markguy9but its not fully working10:53
bunnypunchergratz only been 6 month issue10:53
markguy9cause when I turn off bluetooth I can't turn it back on still10:53
bunnypunchernow you know where to come first lol10:53
bunnypuncherdoh10:53
TJ-Nitrigaur: i have an inotify-based git repo for /etc/ Everytime inotify sees a WRITE,CLOSE inside /etc/ it triggers a new git commit. Then I have the repo cloned off the device to a couple of remote locations10:53
jeremieswhen I execute "sudo service vboxautostart-service restart" it gives me "Job for vboxautostart-service.service failed because the control process exited with error code. See "systemctl status vboxautostart-service.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details."10:53
TJ-markguy9: How are you "turning off" bluetooth?10:54
markguy9So if I want my music to work then I can just restart hahahaa10:54
bunnypunchermarkguy9 what does lsusb show10:54
NitrigaurTJ-, that is good advice right there!10:54
markguy9From the settings page10:54
bunnypuncherheadphones gone?10:54
markguy9headphones are gone :(10:54
bunnypuncherTJ- that is good idea10:54
TJ-markguy9: how did you "turn off" bluetooth?10:54
markguy9in system settings10:54
jeremiesthe output of systemctl is  http://lpaste.net/36106210:55
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, >> Poof! << Oi, where did me headphone move off to?!10:55
TJ-markguy9: why are you turning off BT completely, rather than simply disconnecting the device?10:55
NitrigaurTJ-, probably for testing purposes?10:55
markguy9The reason I want to test that is because usually if I stop listening to music for more than 2 minutes then ubuntu goes wonky and starts lagging the connecting to the headphones, in the past I used to turn off the bluetooth and reconnect to fix it10:56
bunnypuncherthese issues remind me why I don't use bluetooth much10:56
markguy9haha I know10:56
Nitrigaurmarkguy9, ah, OK, now you just have to figure out what causes the wonkiness.10:56
TJ-markguy9: OK. firstly, do you have other bluetooth devices (phone maybe) you can test connectivty with?10:56
bunnypuncherhow do you have the sleep setting10:56
sdfgsdfg23anyne in west coast ?10:56
bunnypuncheryou should turn it from the default is way too low10:57
markguy9sleep setting10:57
TJ-markguy9: I suspect the issue is those 2 bluetooth control nodes for the same device; my guess is the management tools are getting confused as to which one to use10:57
bunnypuncherso starting to look like TJ- might have nailed it wake from sleep acpi power issue10:57
markguy9I'm starting to not understand what to do anymore10:58
bunnypuncherso since the reinstall there is no config information in /etc/bluetooh/main.conf10:58
markguy9Should I restart and try to replicate the original issue10:58
bunnypuncherI really think the device ID should be added there10:58
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, it appears so. EFI implementations are foobar these days.10:58
TJ-markguy9: restart and get the PC working correctly with the bluetooth headphones, and DONT switch BT off!10:58
markguy9Nope there is still a main.conf10:59
markguy9I'll do that :)10:59
bunnypuncherright but no DEVICEID set10:59
bunnypuncherstill #DEVICE blah10:59
TJ-markguy9: after that, we'll upgrade the kernel to 4.13 HWE10:59
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, doesn´t need to be. It´s just using the defaults. Any conf.d directory beside that file perhaps?11:00
TJ-bunnypuncher: in theory, the platform and raw BT control nodes shouldn't be a problem, but we do see platform device issues because those drivers don't get as much use11:00
markguy9_I'm back11:00
TJ-markguy9_: BT audio working right now?11:01
markguy9_Ahh ff11:01
markguy9_ffs11:01
markguy9_nah the BT didn't turn on this time11:01
jeremiesI don't have the file /etc/init.d/vboxautostart-service, but I have installed virtualbox, why?11:01
TJ-markguy9_: did you do a 'restart' ?11:01
markguy9_Nevermind it did now11:01
markguy9_woah it's so sketchy11:01
bunnypuncherthis area I would defer to others I don't use bluetooth except on my mac so have 0 exp with it11:01
TJ-markguy9_: OK, when you say it didn't turn on, do you mean the OS started without bluetooth enabled and you had to enable it via the GUI manager?11:02
markguy9_Yes11:02
TJ-markguy9_: OK, and it should be active as soon as the underlying bluetooth service is started, regardless of a GUI login.11:02
bunnypuncherthat's another area that changed so much device probing since 2.611:03
markguy9_yea it didn't start automatically11:03
markguy9_but the headphones are working now11:03
TJ-markguy9_: I have multiple BT devices (keyboard, mouse, headset) and all connect fine even with a console boot11:03
chicago-nexus7So should I discard my artful images? I have a Lenovo yoga y510p11:03
markguy9_so I restarted, then it didnt turn on, then I turned it on from the gui  and managed to connect the headpones11:03
chicago-nexus7Ideapad11:03
Nitrigaurjeremies, Ubuntu is using systemd right now, so init.d is not used by default, except for some legacy services.11:04
bunnypunchermarkguy9_ what do you get with: hcitool scan11:04
TJ-markguy9_: sometimes there's a delay in BT getting going simply due to congested radio frequencies, since BT shares the same frequencies as WiFi. If there's lots of WiFi APs it can really affect it11:04
markguy9_haha that's exactly what I'm doing11:04
bunnypuncherand lsusb11:04
markguy9_the scan returns nothing11:04
bunnypunchersince they are working you should see proper config11:04
bunnypuncherreally11:04
TJ-markguy9_: what's the Wifi environment like? are there a lot of wifi devices?11:04
markguy9_There are few Wifi devices here in South Africa haha :)11:05

TJ-markguy9_: around you though; how many APs? "sudo iwlist scan 2>/dev/null | grep Cell"11:06
bunnypuncherI dunno I pop on and off irc over the years haven't ever really been consistent user11:07
markguy9_There are 211:07
TJ-markguy9_: OK, thanks, not too bad then11:07
bunnypuncherbut yea if i'm say hey11:07
markguy9_chicago-nexus7 haha11:07
chicago-nexus7You know that line11:08
TJ-markguy9_: woooa! I think I see a problem! have you got an external bluetooth USB dongle as well as the PC's own internal BT device?11:08
vasphey everyone. is there any way to convert that 40MB ubuntu ISO into a live CD?11:08
bunnypunchersign left your dongle hanging out11:08
bunnypunchershame shame shame lol11:09
markguy9_Thats what nitriguar said earlier, but I don't have any other dongles11:09

bunnypuncherI normally in #linux but hang in a lot of OS channels if something interesting pops up11:12
TJ-Nitrigaur: OK, you'll have to see if suspend/resume is recovered. Failure could have been due to a device refusing to suspend, rather than ACPI (see dmesg/kern.log)11:12
bunnypuncherbut ubuntu is one of my fav distros11:12
bunnypuncherexcept for unity but we won't go there11:12
TJ-markguy9_: OK, that's good, only one BT controller11:12
Nitrigaurjeremies, it is in a sense, yes if it tries to start itself from an init.d script11:12
markguy9_Cool :)11:13
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, I am torn between *buntu and Arch, at my work I mainly use CentOS.11:13
bunnypuncherArch is cool.  I have part time hobby of loading up like about 30 -40 vms of different linux to give them a spin11:14
TJ-markguy9_: show us "pastebinit <( ls -l /sys/class/bluetooth/hci0/device/driver/ )"11:14
markguy9_Should I try turning the music off to replicate the lag wonky behavior11:14
markguy9_http://paste.ubuntu.com/26238056/11:14
TJ-markguy9_: Yes11:14
bunnypuncherI like Kali is an interesting one11:14
bunnypuncherwas suprised by PuppyLinux11:15
bunnypuncherwas actually really cool11:15
TJ-markguy9_: and note the time you do so we can know the time it takes to exhibit lagging, if it still does11:15
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, ah, you too? I am building a new firewall and to test it, I have recreated the network at my work (basic functions only of course) in Virtualbox.11:15
markguy9_Cool :)11:15
bunnypuncherI'm Redhat certified but haven't touched anything but cent and fedora lol11:15
bunnypuncherI was trying firewall project was gonna try pfsense (bsd based firewall appliance) but didn't have much luck with it11:16

NitrigaurTJ-, thanks for the hint! I'll be sure to check it out!11:18

TJ-bunnypuncher: yes, same here, I do prefer the way Debian does things (and hence Ubuntu)11:18

TJ-markguy9_: you're playing it on the PC's local speakers now?11:19
markguy9_and If I'm playing a video then the video stutters too11:19
markguy9_the computer (mouse etc) is fine11:19
markguy9_just the music is glitchy11:19
markguy9_its not lag sorry, just don't know how else to describe it11:20
TJ-markguy9_: music is to PC speakers or the Bluetooth headphones now?11:20
TJ-markguy9_: stuttering? choppy?11:20
NitrigaurTJ-, true but corporate support leans heavily towards RHEL, so I had no choice then to go with CentOS. Unfortunately, not all server softs we use are OSS and RHEL/ CentOS is often the only distro that these vendors support :-/11:20
markguy9_headphones11:20
bunnypuncherI get mad when people put down Ubuntu just cuz of Unity.  I explain how solid the base packages and every is11:20
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, aye.11:20
bunnypuncherI like Ubuntu Server for lot of my stuff greate base11:20
TJ-markguy9_: OK, let's see what we can find out. show us "pastebinit <( journalctl -u bluetooth.service )"11:21
markguy9_http://paste.ubuntu.com/26238087/11:21
markguy9_nothing in the pastebin since it started glitching11:21
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, distro reviews on YT mainly focus on the visual experience. Such a shame. No wonder Desktop Linux is branded as kiddy-stuff on YT...11:21
TJ-bunnypuncher: one thing I prefer in Debian/Ubuntu is all the packages in the repos are from a single source I can trust; with EPEL and other repos I'm never truwly sure11:22
markguy9_It's like it was in sleep mode and forgot to wake up or something11:22
NitrigaurTJ-, well, haven't run into any problems using EPEL yet.11:23
TJ-markguy9_: aha! you have the "Not enough free handles to register service" messages. Right, let's get the kernel upgraded.11:23
bunnypuncherTJ- exactly I agree everything is so solid and the people who make the comments don't understand that11:23
markguy9_plays for half a second, stops for half a second.. and repeat11:23
TJ-Nitrigaur: it's not that, but not being able to determine the provinence of packages always worried me.11:23
markguy9_Yea but that error happened 20 minutes ago, the stuttering only started 5 minutes ago11:23
TJ-markguy9_: OK, what does "uname -a" report ?11:23
markguy9_but Linux laptop 4.4.0-103-generic #126-Ubuntu SMP Mon Dec 4 16:23:28 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux11:24
NitrigaurTJ-, yes, I can relate to that. EPEL usually has more coherence than when using cobbled together packages as ppa...11:24
markguy9_how do I upgrade the kernal11:24
TJ-markguy9_: OK, so "sudo apt install linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge"11:24
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, it's just a package after all :-)11:25
markguy9_320 MB package..11:25
markguy9_haha11:25
TJ-markguy9_: this will add the 4.13 kernel as used in Ubuntu 17.1011:25
markguy9_whats the differece between that and just upgradeing to 17?11:25
TJ-markguy9_: once it's installed, reboot to it and test your BT audio again11:25
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, did you read my troubles?11:26
Nitrigaur17.10....11:26
TJ-markguy9_: all the OS packages are rock-solid 16.04 with long term support11:26
TJ-markguy9_: 17.10 suppport will expire in mid 201811:26
TJ-markguy9_: the next long term support (LTS) is 18.04, to be released in April 201811:26
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, do you yourself a favour and stay off 17.10 for now. I would consider it beta-quality at best right now.11:27
bunnypuncheryep and lot of vendor / oss projects are still using 14.04. or 16.0411:27
markguy9_okay so what do I do now?11:27
markguy9_I cancelled the install11:27
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, why?11:27
TJ-17.10 is the first release that is (trying to) use Wayland for GUI too, which had brought a lot of regressions/problems11:27
bunnypuncherand I fought that a few times trying to be current with 17 but quickly learned it was stupid to rock the boat so to speak11:27
markguy9_I'm confused11:27
NitrigaurTJ-, true, bot I have forced it to use Xorg instead.11:28
bunnypuncherlike my dtrace testing is 14.04 based11:28
TJ-markguy9_: why did you cancel it? You're installing a newer kernel, you're NOT installing 17.10 :)11:28
TJ-markguy9_: the kernel is v4.13, which is *used* in 17.10, but you're not installing 17.10 so don't worry11:28
NitrigaurTJ-, bunnypuncher, markguy9_ , I'm going for some lunch, be right back after that.11:29
markguy9_Oh right haha11:29
bunnypunchernot one 1 issue but tried it on 17.10 first oh boy what a massive headache and waste of time11:29
markguy9_sorry I paniced11:29
bunnypuncherok take care Nitrigaur if I don't see ya when you get back happy holidays11:29
TJ-markguy9_:  :D breath and relax11:29
markguy9_thanks again for the help11:29
TJ-Nitrigaur: save some for me!11:29
markguy9_Uhm I have a problem11:30
markguy9_it won't upgrade the kernel now...11:30
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, You too, Thanks!11:30
TJ-markguy9_: because you cancelled it? what's the error message(s) ?11:30
bunnypunchermarkguy9_ don't panic over Linux issues just learn anything can be solved just need the knowledge since you have the code.11:30
markguy9_haha I know11:30
markguy9_I'm sorry :(11:30
markguy9_linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge is already the newest version (4.13.0.21.27).11:30
TJ-markguy9_: Try "sudo apt-get -f install" to ensure it's all sorted... that message tells you it installed before you cancelled11:31
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, don't be sorry, everyone has to start somewhere. Have fun on the road to knowledge about Linux.11:31
bunnypuncherI had used to do stack traces of Solaris kernel panics with 1000 people waiting to get back on the system.  It can get stressful but at least in Unix /Linux it can be solved vs Winblows just reboot and pray11:31
NitrigaurOK, off to lunch, see you soon.11:32
markguy9_apt or apt-get11:32
markguy9_I'm getting this error E: Could not get lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock11:33
markguy9_E: Unable to lock directory /var/cache/apt/archives/11:33
TJ-bunnypuncher: yes, that's what I love about Linux; do some learning, you can dig into any problem to infinite depth, use the source, and patch problems immediately without relying on some other organisation's priorities (e.g. Microsoft, Apple)11:33
TJ-markguy9_: you're using "sudo" ?11:33
markguy9_This is what I'm running sudo apt install linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge11:33
TJ-markguy9_: ok, I suspect your GUI package manager is running right now, and has the lock. give it a few moments and try again11:34
markguy9_haha eish11:34
bunnypuncherI can't even get Windows people to consider they have the same processes and internals that can be looked at to solve the oh we just reboot problem.  But can't get them to look into11:34
bunnypuncherI just don't understand11:34
TJ-markguy9_: maybe check if there's GUI dialog from updates manager hidden behind some other window11:34
markguy9_can't see anything11:35
bunnypuncherI gave an attempt to learn windows internals since why but just couldn't stand it11:35
TJ-bunnypuncher: yes, I used to support Windows OS and had to reverse-engineer to get to bugs which was so frustrating, eventually gave up on Windows in 2004 and moved totally to Linux11:35
TJ-bunnypuncher: but I can still tell you how to navigate the registry with my eyes closed :D11:36
markguy9_can it run in the background of terminal11:36
bunnypuncherI was looking into Win sever 2012  and 2016 and man MS has made lot of progress on there servers and internals11:36
bunnypuncherand they have awesome debug tools11:36
TJ-markguy9_: no... if it's still reporting it, check for some process running with "pastebinit <( ps -efly | egrep '(apt|update)' )"11:37
markguy9_I'm so scared that if I restart now it will never turn on again :(11:37
TJ-markguy9_: don't panic, just collect evidence and make decisions based on it11:37
markguy9_http://paste.ubuntu.com/26238150/11:37
markguy9_haha :)11:37
markguy9_Thanks11:38
bunnypuncherTJ- I hear ya tried same thing gave up in frustration11:38
markguy9_wtf is avahi?11:38
bunnypuncheroh hear is a good story about scared to rebot11:38
TJ-markguy9_: you've got an existing apt install running, as you can see. when you said you cancelled it, how did you do that? Ctrl+C in the terminal window?11:38
markguy9_Yes11:39
markguy9_Control c11:39
markguy9_and control x11:39
TJ-markguy9_: it's the multicast-DNS service for discovering devices on the network with zero configuration required11:39
markguy9_escape button a few times11:39
markguy9_clear11:39
markguy9_etc11:39
bunnypunchermy mentor / unix gray beard wizard that I worked had AIX server that had up time of 5 years going on 6 years11:39
TJ-markguy9_: Oh gawd!!!11:39
markguy9_haha I'm sorry11:39
bunnypuncherand no one at the company was still around that setup the stuff and hardward up11:39
TJ-markguy9_: OK, "sudo pkill apt" to try to terminate that process, then "ps -efly | grep apt" to see if it has gone11:40
bunnypuncherbut my Guru friend kept telling don't it will be fine when we need to finally reboot for patches11:40
bunnypuncherdon't worry11:40
TJ-bunnypuncher: yes, which is when you discover documentation is king :)11:40
bunnypuncheryea sure would have been nice to have11:40
markguy9_the install wont go away11:41
TJ-bunnypuncher: I do like Linux live-patching feature11:41
bunnypuncherhe just knew unix so well he was 100% confident what ever came up he could fix it11:41
TJ-markguy9_: OK, do this "sudo kill -KILL 8530"11:41
bunnypuncheras you get to know it better you get that same confidence11:41
TJ-bunnypuncher: Canonical offers kernel live-patching bundles as part of the 'Advantage' support package11:42
bunnypunchernow 20 years latter I feel that same way11:42
markguy9_okay it seems to be gone now11:42
TJ-markguy9_: ok, "sudo apt -f install" to ensure the system state is good11:42
markguy9_its busy..11:43
bunnypuncherbut some issues are indeed harder than others that's for sure11:43
markguy9_so clearly it was not11:43
markguy9_haha11:43
TJ-markguy9_: and no cancelling it!11:43
markguy9_haha yes sir11:43
markguy9_I don't know how this stuff doesn't stress you guys out11:44
markguy9_haha Okay its finished11:44
markguy9_should I run it again11:44
markguy9_just to be sure11:44
markguy9_haha11:44
bunnypuncherthis one issue was a particular mess we had admin as root think he was in a subdir and was actually in / and did mv * /some/down/the/tree on the running system11:44
markguy9_bunnypuncher omg, i would cry11:45
markguy9_worst I have done is mogrify on my images dir thinking I was in a sub dir11:45
bunnypuncherand we had time to get the sick feeling cuz the system did run for a few mintues until a kernel panic hit11:45
markguy9_haha that was a little bad. but at least I had previews of the images I used to have lol11:46
bunnypuncherwasn't until it hit the /dev tree that it all went south11:46
TJ-markguy9_: no, you can reboot now and test BBT audio again11:46
markguy9_Oh I totally forgot about the BT... its still stuttering haha11:46
bunnypuncherthat was my first real trial by fire way of learning be careful as root11:47
bunnypuncherhave you tried some of the settings in main.conf11:48
TJ-this is where apparmor/selinux can help... you can set rules preventing such things11:48
TJ-markguy9_: after the reboot do your BT audio tests, if it still chops/stutters, we'll dig further11:49
bunnypuncherexactly now a won't have those stories anymore11:49
markguy9I'm back11:49
bunnypuncherand you know how you usually hear of people doing rm /11:49
bunnypuncherbut mv / is a bad one too lol11:50
markguy9Something has definitely changed cause my screens moved positions11:50
KristjanMy name is Kristjan. I am in urgent need for money. Please send me bitcoins. My bitcoin address: 167D9oFBSnyNSRoBNcscNDQb7KdK2BhfKg. You can also send to my paypal account(My e-mail: kristjanrobam@hotmail.com). or bank account: EE671010010225901016. Name: Kristjan Robam11:50
markguy9okay the BT was working so I have paused the music to see if it goes wonky again11:50
bunnypuncherstuff still happens by accident11:50
TJ-bunnypuncher: I was working on a tool some time ago where a container was kept in sync with the host, and you executed commands in the container and had a time delay before the same command was executed on the host, so you could cancel in an emergency. You'd work in the container always so as long as things were good you had no delays waiting for commands to finish in most cases11:50
bunnypuncherI do like 3 backups of everything cuz of these stories11:51
markguy9haha good call11:51
bunnypuncherbut just the other day I was in emacs and system lagged a bit wan't being care I was in dired and hit the wrong keybind and del 10gig of files that hadn't really hit backup hit11:52
bunnypuncheryet11:52
bunnypuncherI was doh11:52
bunnypuncherTJ-  you are filled with good process the git on /etc and this tool11:52
bunnypuncherhave to pop in here and learn some more of this stuff11:53
TJ-bunnypuncher: When you've spent time on IRC you soon realise a fool and his common-sense are easily parted, so you need defense in depth!11:53
Liis it possible to make restore point right before trying installing a new application to bring the system exactly as it was before installing the app?11:53
bunnypuncheryea I've never been too big on IRC11:54
TJ-Li: it is, if you're using LVM or a file-system that supports snapshots11:54
bunnypuncherjust from time to time goes in phases11:54
markguy9Are you guys on discord?11:54
Lino LVM here ext411:54
bunnypuncherso doubt you would have ZFS or btrs either then11:55
LiTJ-: what/how to do those snapshots?11:55
=== r0Oter is now known as r00ter
TJ-bunnypuncher: I think I started with IRC around '93/'94 and it's the perfect blend of high signal-to-noise ratio and low bandwidth for use in almost all circumstances11:55
bunnypunchermy wife was big time into IRC during those years11:56
bunnypuncheron undernet11:56
TJ-Li: ext4 doesn't support snapshots I'm afraid. Are you installing a package from the repositories, or some 3rd party package?11:56
Lirepos11:56
TJ-markguy9: hows the BT audio now?11:56
bunnypuncherLi you could to old school back of before the change like tar / dd /cpio11:57
markguy9It did something different now11:57
markguy9it Just swapped back to the computer sound11:57
markguy9So I turned the headphones off and then on again and now it does want to connect to them again11:57
bunnypunchereven saying that seems so old school after using VM for so long with snapshots11:58
TJ-Li: then in theory there shouldn't be a problem in removing the system-wide installation if you want to roll-back. However, if the application writes per-user configs under $HOME those won't be removed. If you want to protect your current $HOME I'd suggest creating a new user account and using that to test the application in11:58
markguy9It says its connected but it doesn't show up in the sound options list11:58
TJ-markguy9: that sounds like a problem with the GUI sound device list not getting updated, not a BT issue11:58
TJ-markguy9: what desktop environment are you using? Unity?11:59
bunnypuncherI mirror the boot drive before system wide change that I'm nervous about11:59
markguy9yea sadly11:59
markguy9I don't know if I'm brave enough to change11:59
markguy9I feel like things will break11:59
TJ-markguy9: OK, I can't help you so much with that, I've never used Unity or Gnome11:59
markguy9Wow what do you use?11:59
TJ-markguy9: but try this: log-out your user and log-in again, see if the GUI then DOES show your BT headset12:00
bunnypuncherUbuntu supports running multiple and give you the ability to swich on the login screen12:00
bunnypunchertrust it is safe12:00
TJ-markguy9: mainly console/terminal, often with Lubuntu/Xubuntu, but I work out of tmux/shell almost all the time12:00
bunnypuncherUbuntu = solid packages.  Just install the package set for the other DE and it will show up on the login screen as option to login to either12:01
markguy9_Hi again12:01
markguy9_just realised that something you guys told me has fixed my desktop background12:01
markguy9_yay thanks for that12:01
TJ-markguy9 this sounds like a Unity sound device issue, or possibly a pulseaudio BT module issue, bunnypuncher would you agree?12:01
markguy9_woah12:02
markguy9_my sound settings icon has gone12:02
kyenteiHi all. Since today, whenever I run 'sudo -i', I get 'No protocol specified' and 'xprop:  unable to open display ':0''. This displays on every command that I run. If I use sudo su or sudo bash, this doesn't occur. I am on wayland12:02
markguy9_volumn icon12:02
markguy9_so weird12:02
bunnypuncheryea now that its fix at the bt module level  that would be next logical12:02
TJ-markguy9_: hmmm, so the earlier issues you talked of with desktop problems may be your last remaining problem to fix12:02
bunnypuncherstep12:02
markguy9_okay so install gnome and ditch unity?12:03
TJ-markguy9_: this is why I dislike GUIs, so difficult to easily diagnose these kind of issues, since often there is a lot of inter-process communication going on via D-Bus12:03
bunnypunchermarkguy9_ do yourself a favor and try out at least the big DE like KDE / GNOME / XFCE at the least12:03
TJ-markguy9_: NO! don't blindly install/remove things!12:04
bunnypuncherand you decide which you like the best12:04
bunnypuncherthey are pretty different and people have strong opinions of what they like best12:04
TJ-markguy9_: does 'blueman' show the BT headset is connected right now?12:04
bunnypuncherright only the Ubuntu package sets12:04
markguy9_I don't think I have blueman anymore12:04
brainwashkyentei: did you maybe make changes to root's .bashrc?12:04
bunnypunchernothing outside of that till you get exp12:04
TJ-markguy9_: Try typing it's name in the Dash12:05
markguy9_yea I don't have it anymore12:05
jeremiesHow to save state of the virtual machine automatically when the host shutdowns (in virtualbox)?12:05
TJ-markguy9_: You re-installed it earlier if you followed bunnypuncher's instructions12:05
bunnypuncherThe big 3 package sets in ubuntu are pretty safe12:05
markguy9_I didn't haha12:05
TJ-markguy9_: "sudo apt install blueman"12:05
markguy9_I wan't to try get the core working first12:05
markguy9_which it is now :)12:06
kyenteibrainwash, root's bashrc is equal to my own user's bashrc. It is in fact a symlink. Nothing has changed there12:06
bunnypuncherright you are at clean slate from bluetooth module level12:06
kyenteibrainwash, Only thing I did today was install Steam.12:06
markguy9_howcome you type apt and not apt-get12:06
bunnypuncheroh don't install extra stuff during a problem12:06
TJ-markguy9_: 'apt' is the 'user' facing tool; 'apt-get' is more for use in scripts12:06
bunnypuncherI didn't mean now12:06
kyenteibrainwash, I've removed every dotfile from /root/ except for .ssh, which did nothing either12:06
brainwashkyentei: steam may have altered the file, or?12:06
bunnypunchersorry didn't even think that might get mis interpreted12:07
kyenteibrainwash, The bashrc doesn't look altered. And I've started a shell without .bashrc present12:07
markguy9_oh I ran gsettings set com.canonical.indicator.sound visible true to get my volume icon to come back12:07
brainwashkyentei: from the sound of it has to be related to the steam installation, or?12:07
kyenteibrainwash, That's what I suspect, but I can't be entirely sure. Maybe some xorg packages that came installed with it. I've checked the dpkg.log and purged every package that came with Steam though12:08
akikkyentei: there's a change in wayland's security model for gui apps but i don't think it should show up on sudo -i yet12:08
Necmhi12:08
akikkyentei: you need to run "xhost +si:localuser:root" before running gui apps12:08
Necm ki-bash: cannot create temp file for here-document: No space left on device12:08
Necmwhat can I do ?12:08
kyenteiakik, But I'm not running GUI apps. It even shows this error on a simple 'ls'12:09
kyenteiIn fact, it shows it once before the ls output, and twice after the ls output12:09
kyenteiRunning the xhost command doesn't resolve the issue either12:09
akikkyentei: (i meant root gui apps)12:09
bunnypuncheragain I would defer to TJ- as I haven't used Unity very much.  I use Xfce mostly with Cinnimon and mate sometimes12:09
TJ-markguy9_: you're able to test the BT audio now ?12:10
kyenteiakik, I get ya - but that's not what I'm trying to do.12:10
bunnypuncherbut Unity could be in the mix here12:10
TJ-bunnypuncher: don't defer to me when it comes to Unity, that's the Blind leading the blind!12:10
kyenteiakik, This error is displayed at whatever I type into my root shell if I enter it with sudo -i12:10
bunnypuncherso we are like 3 blind mice12:10
markguy9_It says that the headset is connected but it doesn't come up in the sound options https://pasteboard.co/GZxgimw.png12:10
markguy9_This is very simmilar to the state I was in with 14.0412:11
akikkyentei: compare your "env" when you have your normal user account and when you've run "sudo -i"12:11
bunnypuncherso markguy9_ are you checking logs and dmesg12:11
bunnypuncheras things are getting tested something new might show up12:11
markguy9_Bluetooth: hci0 command 0x1405 tx timeout12:12
Necm.12:12
TJ-kyentei: did you say you symlinked /root/.bashrc to /home/$USER/.bashrc ?12:12
TJ-markguy9_: give me a minute or two, I'm going to search for unity bugs with sound settings12:13
markguy9_Thanks TJ12:14
markguy9_I really think that its connecting properly now12:14
markguy9_I think its a problem that it doesn't show up in the sound output options12:14
TJ-markguy9_: yes, the problem now seems to be that either pulseaudio, or the sound-settings GUI, isn't rediscovering the device12:14
bunnypuncherbut it does still stutter12:14
bunnypunchercheck /var/log/Xorg.log12:15
bunnypunchersee if anything didn't load right in X12:15
kyenteiTJ-, Yeah, it is symlinked. But it doesn't change anything if I remove it - and it's worked before. I am aware of the security risk it imposes.12:15
kyenteiakik, Checking right now.12:15
BluesKajHi folks12:15
markguy9_I don't know if it stutters or not, I cant reconnect to it12:15
markguy9_Well it says its connected by I cant play through it anymore12:15
kyenteiakik, I've diffed them but there's nothing that stands out to me12:16
bunnypuncherand volume / battery all that stuff is good still ?12:16
akikkyentei: check if you have root owned files in your $HOME12:16
bunnypuncherso not being able to play could be permission issue to device12:17
markguy9_this is just stuper glitchy12:17
bunnypuncherwon't hurt to check the audio device file make sure it is accessable12:17
markguy9_super12:17
markguy9_I have no idea whether its connected or not now12:18
kyenteiakik, just .lesshst12:18
kyenteiakik, You mean my user $HOME right?12:18
markguy9_In the bluetooth dropdown list it says connected12:18
bunnypuncheryea I can't say I've ever seen this much issue with headphones ever before12:18
markguy9_but it usually has a lock sign when its connected12:18
TJ-markguy9_: try disconnect/reconnect12:18
markguy9_haha I know right12:18
markguy9_anyone want to buy a pair of skullcandy bluetooth headphones12:19
bunnypuncherI use the old school plugs or usb12:19
markguy9_they're really nice when they work... haha12:19
akikkyentei: yes. have you made changes to your shell startup files? $DISPLAY, $XAUTHORITY12:19
bunnypuncherdidn't they come with cable kit too?12:19
markguy9_I'm not sure whether to use blueman or normal bluetooth anymore...12:19
kyenteiakik, I haven't personally.12:20
markguy9_Nope, just bluetooth12:20
bunnypuncherI've fought sound card issues / amp issues / speaker issues but headphones is one of those gott thing just usually works12:20
markguy9_is there something I can type to see if they are actually connected?12:21
kyenteiakik, I'll try and create a new user, and see if the problem occurs there12:21
bunnypuncherwouldn't hurt to see if the same issue happens in Xfce12:21
bunnypuncherit is small and would load fast and provide alt DE to unity12:21
TJ-markguy9_: "bluetoothctl" then "devices" identify your device MAC address then "info <mac-address>"12:21

kyenteiakik, I've created a new user, logged in there, and used sudo -i. Same happens12:22
markguy9_is there something I can type to activate them12:22
markguy9_haha12:22
bunnypuncherwhat about trying that Device in main.conf12:22
markguy9_just taking a chance12:22
kyenteiThat's a user with an empty $HOME (except for what's in /etc/skel, obviously)12:22
bunnypuncheryou can try:  bluetoothctl12:22
bunnypunchersee if they are activated that way12:23
markguy9_oh then they are activate12:23
markguy9_oh then they are activated12:23
TJ-markguy9_: I've activated my own BT headset here, going to test since we have the same kernel and OS versions12:23
markguy9_Only possible difference being that I upgraded from 14.0412:24
bunnypuncherI was gonna grab my son's try and replicate the problem but forgot he got rid of his bluetooh headphone to go back to usb ones12:24
bunnypuncherdifferent reason battery and cable worn out :)12:24
markguy9_haha was he having the same problem? haha12:24
akikkyentei: did the steam install add some files to /etc/profile.d ?12:24
markguy9_cable worn out on bluetooth headphones?12:24
bunnypuncherbut he is WinBlows user cuz of games12:25
TJ-markguy9_: so the problem is if you pause/stop audio then later play something else? or is it after you disconnect the headset then reconnect it?12:25
markguy9_fair enough12:25
bunnypuncherthe charge one12:25
markguy9_both12:25
bunnypuncheractually cat chewed the charge cable too12:25
TJ-markguy9_: OK, testing now12:25
markguy9_if I stop the music for a few minutes then it starts stuttering if I play it again12:25
kyenteiakik, Nothing new there. If I login directly as root from TTY, it doesn't occur either.12:25
kyenteiThen again, thats' TTY...12:26
markguy9_also if I disconnect the headphones its impossible to reconnect them again without restarted12:26
markguy9_also if I disconnect the headphones its impossible to reconnect them again without restarting12:26
bunnypuncherhad cat chew a 20 dollar usb cable the other day ggrrrrr12:26
Necm ki-bash: cannot create temp file for here-document: No space left on device12:26
bunnypuncherhmm Necm sounds like something is full of it12:27
markguy9_Also now when I try and pair the device from blueman then it says failed to add devifde12:27
markguy9_device12:27
Necmhow can i solve this problem ?12:28
bunnypuncherand Skull candy are expensive nice headset12:28
TJ-markguy9_: for the choppy/stutter issue, when it next happens grab the last entries from the kernel log ("pastebinit <( tail -n 250 /var/log/kern.log )"12:28
TJ-markguy9_: I've tried both processes so far without a problem, although I had to use bluetoothctl to pair - blueman kept failing at that12:28

Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, Skull candy are mostly about looks, not so much the sound.12:31
TJ-Necm: right, so you need to clear some space12:32
Necmhow ?12:32
markguy9_I got mine for R60012:32
markguy9_which is about $4512:32

NitrigaurDoes anyone know a way to permanently limit Xorg CPU usage?12:33
BluesKajadd a pcie gpu12:34
bunnypuncherNitrigaur what is the goal limiting Xorg cpu?12:35
BluesKajif possible12:35
kyenteiakik, I've resolved it by adding "export DISPLAY=" to /root/.profile12:35
bunnypuncherNitrigaur I dunno my kids go all nuts about them12:35
bunnypuncherNitrigaur just over priced crap imo12:36
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, to prevent it consuming 100% CPU at any time and thereby making troubleshooting needlessly painful.12:36
bunnypuncherlike old schol woofers not headphones12:36
markguy9_okay so I can't start the bluetooth again12:37
markguy9_after trying to restart12:37
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, indeed, it's just the image. SC has great marketing and some genuinely nice designs (when looks are concerned). I like the Sony, B & W and Sennheiser headphones.12:38
TJ-markguy9_: "bluetoothctl" "agent KeyboardDisplay" "default-agent" "scan on" identify MAC address of headset "pair <MAC-address>" then "trust <MAC-address>" *note: Tab-completion works for MAC addresses12:38
bunnypuncherNitrigaur you should look into nice,  cpulimit, and linux control groups12:38
mlrnhi there. kernel 4.10.0-40 -> 4.10.0-42 on 17.04 has a regression; HDMI on intel 4400 stops working.12:39
bunnypunchersudo cpulimit --pid 17918 --limit 5012:39
TJ-markguy9_: if device is already connected then "devices" ID the headset then "remove <MAC-address>" first12:39
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, I've tried nice and cpulimit. Both did not work in my case. Linux control groups it is..12:39
bunnypuncherwhere pid is X12:39
markguy9_I cant get the bluetooth to turn on anymore12:40
bunnypunchercontrols are only sure fire way12:40
markguy9_I'm going to try remove the audio.conf and the main.conf and see if it starts12:40
TJ-markguy9_: "sudo systemctl restart bluetooth.service"12:40
bunnypuncherthose all ones i know of12:40
TJ-markguy9_: DON'T randomly remove stuff!12:40
NitrigaurTJ-, is the .service suffix really necessary?12:40
markguy9_It doesn't start again after I type that command12:40
bunnypuncherlisten to TJ- he knows his stuff12:41
TJ-markguy9_: what isn't starting? the GUI or the BT device itself? how about "bluetoothctl" then "power on" ?12:41
TJ-Nitrigaur: I've found so more often than not, but it may do best-guess completion if there's no ambiguity12:41
bunnypuncherwe already reset the configure properly earlier12:42
bunnypuncherthere is no benefit from doing it again12:42
markguy9_Failed to set power on: org.bluez.Error.Failed12:43
TJ-markguy9_: BTW, when using "bluetoothctl" "help" lists the available commands; "quit" returns to the shell12:43
TJ-markguy9_: thank-you! we now have some data!12:43
TJ-markguy9_: show us  "pastebinit <( tail -n 400 /var/log/kern.log )"12:43
markguy9_https://paste.ubuntu.com/26238415/12:44
bunnypuncheropen browser tabs sure do build up fast these days12:45

Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, Firefox Pocket gets close to the functionality of tmux in some aspects12:46
TJ-markguy9_: what is the make/model of the BT speaker?12:46
markguy9_best tool I've seen for browser tabs if you're using chrome is sessionbuddy12:46
markguy9_skull candy12:46
bunnypuncherI'll have to check that out12:47
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, what model, please?12:47
markguy9_uproar wireless12:47
bunnypuncherthat's why I like these channels learn cool little tips12:47
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, okay, any mode numbers?12:47
bunnypuncherI'm still awestruck by TJ- /etc one12:47
markguy9_https://www.amazon.com/Skullcandy-Uproar-Bluetooth-Wireless-Headphones/dp/B00WGM39QM12:48
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, okay, any model numbers12:48
NitrigaurAllright, that's sorted12:48
NitrigaurAlright, that's sorted12:48
bunnypuncheroh those are the now infamous headphones of linux nightmare12:49
markguy9_Ooops its these ones. I think they're the same though https://www.amazon.com/Skullcandy-Uproar-Bluetooth-Wireless-Headphones/dp/B013UQN7JG?th=112:49
markguy9_hahaha yea!12:49
markguy9_Good headphones for $35 though12:49
bunnypuncherI'll have to post really shitty review12:49
bunnypuncherlol12:49
markguy9_hahaha12:50
markguy9_Should I post a question on amazon12:50
bunnypunchermaybe some of the amazon back end linux guys are true gurus12:50
bunnypuncherdoubt they look at head compliants but maybe12:50
markguy9_haha12:51
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, Amazon AWS is not directly related to the Amazon shops...12:51
bunnypuncherI know just same parent company12:51
bunnypuncherpretty independant12:51
bunnypuncherI had couple of people I know work there12:52
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, good connections?12:52
bunnypuncherone was 14 year kid back when got started running an isp in 1996 now he is like 35 year GA tech masters in compouter science guru12:53
bunnypunchernerdy kid like hanging us cuz we used BSDi unix and had internet12:53
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, ah, I started out at an ISP myself :-)12:53
bunnypuncherhe was sharp even at 1412:54
bunnypuncheran I didn't see him for 20 years then talked to him all grown up and team lead of AWS stuff12:54
TJ-markguy9_: do this: "sudo modprobe -r btusb; sudo modprobe btusb reset=1"12:54
bunnypuncherstrange12:54
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, ATM Frame-Relay stuff, RFC1483, xDSL. Pretty much obsolete nowadays with glass fiber ruling supreme.12:54
markguy9_when trying to run sudo hciconfig hci0 up12:55
bunnypuncheryea I know so much of the stuff I loved now obsolete :(12:55
markguy9_I get Can't init device hci0: Connection timed out (110)12:55
TJ-guys, can we take the non-support chat to #ubuntu-offtopic please12:55
NitrigaurTJ-, right12:55
bunnypunchersorry good point my aplologiez12:55
Nitrigaurme too.12:55
TJ-markguy9_: OK, so this looks like something in the hardware might not be behaving. show me "pastebinit <( dmesg )"12:56
markguy9_http://paste.ubuntu.com/26238466/12:56
TJ-markguy9_: give me a few mins, it could take some time to digest :)12:56
markguy9_Haha I was just saying to my friend, that that looks impossible to read12:57
TJ-markguy9_: this is why I love Linux, it tells you everything you need to know, no guessing if you know where to look for the info12:57
NitrigaurTJ-, wouldn't it be better to setup a watch and see what happens after trying to activate BT? That way you can narrow it down a bit.12:57
TJ-markguy9_: not read it yet, but my gut is telline me the asus-bluetooth platform device is the cause of all this12:58
TJ-Nitrigaur: I want to see if any PCI/USB controller issues are reported12:58
NitrigaurTJ-, a conflict between kernel mode drivers?12:58
bunnypuncherI thought there were firmware fixes for some issues like this12:58
markguy9_Its possible because a college is using lenovo and doesn't have the problem13:00
bunnypuncherthis looks interesting thing13:00
bunnypuncherpactl load-module module-bluetooth-discover13:00
bunnypuncherI didn't know about that13:00
markguy9_Failure: Module initialization failed13:01
bunnypuncheri think it is a package you don't have13:01
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, does it work correctlu under "the other OS"?13:01
bunnypuncherbut listen to TJ- don't go install too many strange packages13:01
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, does it work correctly under "the other OS"?13:01
TJ-hmmm line 978 "[    2.068425] input: Asus Wireless Radio Control as ..." ... so we have a 3rd radio frequency device present. keep in mind in case it is using 2.4GHz band too13:02
markguy9_The other OS?13:02
markguy9_They work 100% on my phone13:02
TJ-yes, it's (line 1028)  "[    2.257149] input: Microsoft Microsoft® 2.4GHz Transceiver v6.0 as..."13:03
NitrigaurTJ-, it probably is an integrated module supplying both Wifi and Bluetooth on the same daughterboard.13:03
bunnypuncherthis is definitely in the range of hardware issue or kernel / module bug13:03
Necmcannot create temp file for here-document: No space left on device13:04
Necmsame.. error13:04
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, but do they work properly on a Live DVD session, or in Windows (if that is still present on your machine)?13:04
markguy9_Ah I see, I don't have that available right now13:05
NitrigaurThat way we can rule out H/W issues of the daughterboard that supplies the BT functionality.13:05
NitrigaurOn your computer I mean, not the headphones.13:06
TJ-testing? did my link drop?13:06
markguy9_nope13:06
bunnypuncherwell by hardware issue it would be more in the way the hardware presents info to the kernel or extra device info that seems to be creeping in13:06
markguy9_I found this online " hadn't thought that the Bluetooth module may not be working properly. It appears that the dell xps 15 bluetooth module doesn't load its firmware properly as shown by dmesg |grep "firmware load". ``` [84133.299481] bluetooth hci0: Direct firmware load for brcm/BCM-0a5c-6410.hcd failed with error -2 ``` Unfortunately the authentication error I get is immediate (not after a timeout waiting for the key to be entered13:07
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, ultimately that still relies on signal processing in software.13:07
bunnypuncherthis is indeed a excellent problem you brought markguy9_13:07
markguy9_Haha yea I'm sorry13:07
markguy9_This is a little soul crushing13:07
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, Don't be, it's certainly not boring13:07
markguy9_Seems there may not be a pot of gold at the end of this rainbow haha13:08
markguy9_It's just so weird that it works when I restart13:08
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, Reminds me of PulseAudio conflicts with ALSA.13:09
markguy9_Yea sound is a tricky thing on ubuntu13:09
markguy9_Oh no13:11
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, What happened?13:11
markguy9_TJ- left haha13:11
markguy9_Oh hes back :)13:11
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, Only temporarily13:11
TJ-sorry, my iwlwifi decided to drop packets and I hadn't realised13:13
TJ-I'll post the messages that you maybe didn't get from reading the dmesg lof13:13
TJ-hmmm line 978 "[    2.068425] input: Asus Wireless Radio Control as ..." ... so we have a 3rd radio frequency device present. keep in mind in case it is using 2.4GHz band too13:13
TJ-yes, it's (line 1028)  "[    2.257149] input: Microsoft Microsoft® 2.4GHz Transceiver v6.0 as..."13:13
TJ-markguy9_: does this report anything? "lsmod | grep asus-wireless" ?13:15
markguy9_Nope13:16
TJ-markguy9_: ha, let's use an underscore instead:  "lsmod | grep asus_wireless" ?13:16
markguy9_asus_wireless          16384  013:16
markguy9_someone online deleted ~/.config/pulse which apperently solved the issuse13:17
TJ-markguy9_: right, and that'll be creating those asus-bluetooth and asus-wlan devices that rfkill reports13:17
markguy9_issue.. should I try that13:17
TJ-markguy9_: try "sudo modprobe -r asus_wireless" then "sudo modprobe -r btusb" then "sudo modprobe btusb"13:17
bunnypuncheroh I stepped away you are looking at asus_wireless module source?13:18
markguy9_okay I ran that13:18
markguy9_now the bluetooth icon has gone away13:18
markguy9_I feel like thats progress13:18
TJ-bunnypuncher: no, but these platform drivers are known to sometimes conflict13:18
TJ-markguy9_: "sudo systemctl restart bluetooth.service"13:19
bunnypuncherI'm like like fan trying to follow along at home :)13:19
markguy9_[bluetooth]# power on No default controller available13:19
TJ-markguy9_: also "pastebinit <( rfkill list; journalctl -u bluetooth.service; tail -n 200 /var/log/kern.log )"13:20
markguy9_http://paste.ubuntu.com/26238579/13:20
TJ-markguy9_: woooah! line 304 "[ 5436.126501] BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at           (null)"13:21
markguy9_That seems bad13:22
bunnypuncherthis one has me stumped and only next step I can think of involves the much deeper level of tracing.  Tj- is the loadable kernel profile method you mentioned documented in the normal kernel docs?13:22
zap0is there some samba folder sharing UI i can use, or do i have to edit text files like a neaderthal ?13:22
TJ-markguy9_: do you dual boot with Windows ?13:23
Nitrigaurzap0, I presume you mean GUI, not UI here?13:23
markguy9_Not a chance :)13:23
bunnypuncherzap0 There are some samba config editors.  However my experience using is not been that great.13:23
TJ-markguy9_: is windows still installed?13:24
markguy9_Nope13:24
Nitrigaurzap0, is the share you are trying to access member of a domain or workgroup?13:24
markguy9_Its a fresh HDD13:24
TJ-markguy9_: can you do a firmware update without windows? the PC is 2 years out of date, it reports "Hardware name: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. G551JM/G551JM, BIOS G551JM.202 07/17/2014" but the latest is v205 dated 2016-07-06 https://www.asus.com/ROG-Republic-Of-Gamers/ROG-G551JM/HelpDesk_BIOS/13:25
NitrigaurTJ-, markguy9_ try to use a Live DVD, than you can eliminate any modifications you made to the system as a cause.13:25
TJ-markguy9_: and the changelog for v204 says "Update EC FW" - which means the PC's Embedded Controller firmware, which is used by ACPI to manage devices13:26
zap0Nitrigaur, i have a lan,  some windows boxes on it   win1  win2   they have default WORKGROUP.    i want to make a folder in ~  sharable, so i can have the windows machines dump stuff in there13:26
markguy9_I don't had a bootdisc on hand will start putting on together13:27
markguy9_I don't know how to update firmware13:27
Nitrigaurzap0, so in effect you want to make your homedrive accessible to the Windows Networks service?13:27
Nitrigaurzap0, I recommend you only share a subdirectory and not the homedrive itself.13:28
=== beaver is now known as evilnewbie
TJ-markguy9_: the download file is a zip archive, inside is a single firmware image, so I'm guessing you could put that on a FAT32 USB device, or in the EFI system partition, and then use the PC's firmware update functions to locate that file and apply it13:28
markguy9_Oh my lord13:29
markguy9_You talking like bios stuff13:29
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, sure :-), only in your case it's EFI.13:29
TJ-markguy9_: Yes, the very first thing in many cases like this is to ensure the latest firmware is installed. Most modern systems have an easy way to install it from the firmware's own setup screens, without requiring an operating system13:30
bunnypuncherhow is the the computer?13:30
bunnypuncherold13:30
markguy9_3-4 years13:30
markguy9_I didn't even think about firmware13:30
bunnypuncheryea could use some updates in that case13:30
markguy9_I think ubuntu handled that.13:31
zap0Nitrigaur  i said "a folder in ~  sharable"   yes.. already using a single empty folder13:31
Nitrigaurzap0, phew :-)13:31
bunnypuncherthis is definitely an edge case for kernel devs.  I really can see the need to have the hard to produce the code / replicate the issues13:31
TJ-markguy9_: page 89 of the user manual "To update the BIOS" at http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/G551JM/0409_E9399_B.pdf13:32
Nitrigaurzap0, this link should work: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/How%20to%20Create%20a%20Network%20Share%20Via%20Samba%20Via%20CLI%20(Command-line%20interface/Linux%20Terminal)%20-%20Uncomplicated,%20Simple%20and%20Brief%20Way!13:32
bunnypuncherIt would be nice to have something bluetooth to follow along on13:32
Nitrigaurzap0, you can add the share to /etc/fstab if you want to make it permanent.13:32
bunnypuncherI love how the call the brief way but list 63 bullets13:33
Nitrigaurzap0, after that you can simply mount the mount point and /etc/fstab knows what to mount.13:33
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, yes, good one eh?13:34
markguy9_Eeeek13:35
TJ-bunnypuncher Nitrigaur I have to take my Huskies for a run, be about an hour. Can you guys guide markguy9_ through the firmware update process as per the links I've posted?13:35
chokiHell I've an issue with my ubuntu. I tried changing my hostname with `hostname` and also changed it in /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts. But after reboot it still won't change. What could be wrong with it?13:35
NitrigaurTJ-, sure13:35
* TJ- runs off in harness :)13:35
bunnypuncheryea13:35
Nitrigaurchoki, are you running NetworkManager?13:36
markguy9_TJ- thank you so much for all the help13:36
markguy9_I really appreciate all the time and effort you have put in13:36
bunnypunchernp sorry it is such a painful bug for you.13:37
Nitrigaurchoki, what is the output of systemctl status NetworkManager13:37
markguy9_Haha I would have thought it would be more painful for you than for me13:37
markguy9_I at least have something to gain out of this13:38
bunnypuncherNitrigaur I was about to type the same thing Nitrigaur but you beat me to the punch13:38
Nitrigaurchoki, if it's running you can use nmtui to set the hostname through a ncurses interface.13:38
markguy9_Okay going to try this. Be back later, thanks bunnypuncher and Nitirigaur for all the help13:39
bunnypuncherLucky for me this is a device tree I never use so I did learn some about the Bluetooth modules / packages / troublehooting procedures13:39
markguy9_It means a lot!13:39
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, good luck!13:39
markguy9_Don't say it like that13:39
bunnypuncherok good luck man13:39
NitrigaurHehehe13:39
markguy9_makes me feel like I'm not going to be able to boot my computer after this hahaha13:39
Nitrigaurmarkguy9_, just dont't go rogue and randomly delete packages, mkay?13:40
NitrigaurDrats, too late13:40
Nitrigaurchoki, are you still there?13:40
NitrigaurOh well...13:41
bunnypuncherI had this very same issue choki is having before I knew NetManager very well13:41
bunnypuncheryou change settings in /etc and by some strange act of the devil it would change itself back13:42
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, NetManager has been a pita, except when dealing with Wireless connections. I usually disable the service as part of server setup.13:42
bunnypuncherI felt the same way until one I said I'm gonna suck it up and learn NetManager13:43
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, so you also ignored the fat banner: **** DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE. It is automatically generated by Network Manager **** ?13:43
bunnypuncherthen after I got the hang of it. I was like this isn't so bad13:43
bunnypuncheras did I.  as did i13:44
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, well last server I set up automagically got DHCP activated and got stuck with 2 IP adresses instead of one and faulty DNS. I couldn't figure out what caused it, so I simply disabled NetworkManager13:45
TJ-choki: changes in /etc/hosts should be to 127.0.1.1 and possibly ::1  also check /etc/nsswitch.conf has something like this for hosts: "hosts:          files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns"13:45
TJ-and now I'm gone :)13:45
NitrigaurTJ-, hav ea good run!13:45
NitrigaurTJ-, have a good run!13:45
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, I do like the way that NetworkManager abridged network setup for those new to Linux, thereby avoiding having to hack about in about 4 different files strewn over the /etc tree. It makes it more accessible that way to newcomers.13:48
bunnypuncherhow long has NetworkManager been out replace inetd.  like 5 -7 years. took that long for me to give it a chance13:50
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, NetworkManager has indeed been out for quite a while now. It's a shame that the main dev behind it is such a (*** peep ***).13:52
Nitrigaurbunnypuncher, care to join me in #ubuntu-offtopic?13:53
bunnypuncheryea good idea I fell like I might get on systemd / inetd rant13:54
ibeloniasHello, let's say my wifi network is awesomeWifi, when I try to click to connect there is an arrow next to awesomeWifi and when I click there is awesomeWifi1, awesomeWifi2 etc etc13:54
ibeloniasany ideas what's wrong13:54
Nitrigauribelonias, probably multiple channels available, 2,4Mhz, 5GHz or probably a guest network on the same router.13:55
ibeloniasNitrigaur, any idea how to fix it ? It's my old laptop, don't rember which version of ubuntu running. I've been using Ubuntu for many years haven't seen anything like that13:57
Nitrigauribelonias, you could switch off the 5Ghz band in your Wifi definition. What is the main problem with it? Usually more bands means better connectivity.13:59
meldronhey guys, does anyone know how to configure wifi in ubutnu (no network manager) to connect with every available wifi dongle not a specific device id?13:59

marethi, I would like to track how some of the processes takes resources of my ubunt 16.04 laptop. I am curious what would be easiest way to do that. Ideally I would run something in a background for a few hours which would gave some nice high level report  any ideas?14:26

GoopI want to have my computer always listening for SSH, so I can SSH into my computer when I need it. However, I am running mechanical hard drives. Would it be best if I got an SSD that runs the Linux OS and have HDD's for everything else, and have the HDD's poweroff when the system goes to suspend, but have the SSD never turn off when it goes to suspend?16:17
GoopI have no idea how I would set that up.16:18

dedzeHi, I have a problem with ubuntu. Draging a windows to the top or side of the screen to change its size doesnt work anymore. It's been like this for a few days and I didn't modify my system recently. I tried rebooting of course but it didn't fix anything. Also my system doesn't seem to suspend every time after 10 minutes of inactivity as it should.19:12

jrgilmanhey uh, I've never encountered this before, but I moved a bunch of files from my mac that contained colons (:) to my 16.04 machine and for some reason the colons in the files have been replaced with . I'm not sure why this could have happened (I would assume the encoding between mac os x and ubuntu is compatible?)20:09
jrgilmanI should say, the colons in the file names*20:10
TJ-jrgilman: how did you move the files?20:14
jrgilmanusb stick formated exfat20:14
TJ-hmmm, do the :'s show from the Mac when reading the directory of the exfat FS?20:15
jrgilmanyeah20:15
jrgilmanI've never encountered something like this20:16
jrgilmaneither way I just used rename to rename all the files20:16
grid-hey20:16
TJ-what's the actual character code of the character? "ls dir/file | hexdump -C"20:16
grid-i get enter your password to unlock the keyring all the time20:16
grid-it isn't the same as my root account20:16
grid-i haven't set it either20:16
grid-what can it be?20:17
grid-login keyring actually20:17
TJ-grid what are you doing when that is asked? it should require your regular user password20:17
jrgilmanjacob@jacob-desktop:~/Desktop/preprocessing 2/final_data$ echo "" | hexdump -C20:17
jrgilman00000000  ef 80 a2 0a                                       |....|20:17
jrgilman0000000420:17
grid-The login keyring did not get unlocked when you logged into this computer20:18
jrgilmanTJ- either way I fixed the issue, just a curiosity at this point20:18
grid-TJ-: just opening google chrome that's it20:18
grid-TJ-: i have only a root password20:18
TJ-jrgilman: that's some weird UTF-8 by the look of it20:19
grid-it belongs to my ubuntu super user account, the one that is my own name which i have set by the installation default20:19
jrgilmanyeah online it's listed as a private use area20:19
jrgilmanno idea20:19
TJ-jrgilman: seems like something the Mac does then in it's exfat driver maybe?20:19
jrgilmanlikely, I'm just using uh20:19
grid-TJ-: what can be the password20:20
jrgilmanI just did sudo apt install exfat-fuse exfat-utils20:20
TJ-grid-: I told you. You know your passwords, I don't20:20
grid-TJ-: i have only set one password once20:20
jrgilmanto get the driver20:20
TJ-jrgilman: the issue was caused on the Mac though, not Linux20:20
jrgilmanah hmm20:20
jrgilmancurious20:21
* jrgilman shrugs20:21
TJ-jrgilman: I guess the Mac's exfat driver does that conversion for some reason20:21
TJ-jrgilman: I bet it's because on Windows NTFS : is a special token denoting streams20:21
jrgilmanah20:21
TJ-jrgilman: maybe that's allowed or tolerated by Windows on exFat too20:22
jrgilmanso you think that microsoft made the : convert to that special character in the spec for exFAT20:22
jrgilmanso it wouldn't conflict with their own OS20:22
jrgilmanyeah20:23
TJ-jrgilman: i have no idea; You did it on the Mac so I'd look at the Mac driver first.20:23
jrgilmanthat seems to be it20:23
jrgilmanexFAT allows everything in file names in UTF-16 except for a few including the colon character20:23
jrgilmanso likely some implementation of the mac driver caused that20:24
jrgilmanas you were saying20:24
ioriajrgilman, colon is an illegal character for windows filenames asfik20:24
jrgilmanyeah20:24
TJ-ioria: it's the stream token in NTFS20:26
ioriaTJ-, yeah20:30

ioriajohn_rambo, why did you do that ?20:31
john_ramboioria, I was told that an kernel upgrade is required to get rid of that bug20:32
TJ-john_rambo: do "grep SPI_INTEL_SPI_PLATFORM /boot/config*" - if there are no results you're safe20:36
TJ-john_rambo: if there are hits, and they're in a kernel version that isn't the current one ("uname -r") then you can remove the kernel packages for the version containing the bug20:37
john_ramboTJ-, https://paste2.org/JmhnBgmt20:38
TJ-john_rambo: what does "uname -r" report?20:38
DexterFhow do I make server 16.04 LTS recognize the fakeraid1 of a HP Microserver Gen7 N40L?20:38
john_ramboTJ-, 4.14.0-13-generic20:38
TJ-john_rambo: do "sudo apt remove linux-image-4.13.0-17-generic" then "sudo apt autoremove"20:39
TJ-DexterF: depends on what kind of fakeraid it is, generally it requires the dmraid driver (although mdraid supports intel fakeraid )20:39
DexterFTJ-, not aware of different types. I set up the logical drive in the server's BIOS and that's it pretty much. expected some /dev/asdfghjk to appear. "dmraid" needs to be loaded in boot options?20:41
john_ramboTJ-, Removed that kernel then did autoremove ...Now getting this https://paste2.org/ks5mL1Gf20:42

pikapikaNo I mean where exactly does it install the Ubuntu, where can I review the exact disk structure expected?23:39
oerheksdepends on the free space, i guess.23:40
pikapikaI am reading some threads about it, the things being said are rather scary. Best I use the Something else option and read up good defaults for the values23:41
xalenpikapika: if selected, it will show you the space available on the disk to choose in the next step23:41
oerheksand you would have the option to install in expert mode/manualy too23:41

skinuxI've been having issues with losing internet for a while, DNS errors. I'm wondering about what could be going wrong with configuration to make my DNS settings change and at some point change back?23:51
Loshkipikapika: any install can go wrong. For that matter, hardware commits suicide occasionally and with notice. If you have any data you cannot live without that isn't already backed up, you're doing it wrong. And if you do it right, you can recover from anything.23:54
Loshkis/with/without/23:55
xalenpikapika it's possible. I've never had that problem, however you should always do a full backup before setting up a dual boot system23:55
pikapikaYeah I have backed up everything23:55
pikapikaBut its a simple copy paste not a disk image, so I am afraid if it messes up mbr orboot sequence or something then I am fucked23:55
xalenpikapika: if you want to keep windows at all costs, you should have a disk image for backup. Although it's unlikely that you have any problems with the installers nowadays, you can never be too careful I guess23:57
pikapikaI have media for insalling Windows in case something goes wrong...I hope that suffices23:58
