TigerMonarchyHi all. I could really use some help with this wifi issue. I know I have two different wifi connections causing conflict, and my wifi drops at random times into a 'device not ready' state. If anyone could help, I would be very grateful. I'm on Xfce with Ubuntu 17.04.00:22

eraserpencilneed help understanding output i get00:37
Neo2what does means ubuntu flavor?00:37
Neo2ubuntu gnome is like usual ubuntu?00:37
lordcirthNeo2, Ubuntu Gnome is Ubuntu, but with the Gnome desktop.00:38
Neo2lordcirth: see this is all ubuntu too?00:38
lordcirtheraserpencil, are you trying to compile Postgres?00:38
lordcirthNeo2, yes, it is00:39
Neo2I see on diagram a few OS from this list is derived from ubuntu? They all are children of ubuntu?00:39
lordcirthNeo2, they are very little different, which is why they are called 'flavours'00:39
lordcirtheraserpencil, seems you need to install 'bison' and 'flex', as it says.00:40
Neo2well, understood00:40
eraserpencilI have installed the postgresql package on the oficial repos though00:40
Neo2and what is good for download, I've known soon will new ubuntu without unity and with gnome, Gnome is better?00:40
Dagronmastereraserpencil:  apt-get install flex bison libreadline-dev00:40
lordcirtheraserpencil, ok, so where did this output come from?  What command did you run and why?00:41
eraserpencilhttps://github.com/apple/ccs-calendarserver00:41
eraserpencilI ran ./bin/develop00:41
eraserpenciland for future reference, where do I find the config.log that the output recommends?00:42
Dagronmasterconifg.log should be in the same directory as the configure script.00:43
lordcirtheraserpencil, are you trying to help with development, or just run it?  It seems that the package 'calendarserver' does exist00:43
Dagronmasteractually, it looks like you can either install libreadline-dev or just do ./configure --without-readline00:43
eraserpencillordcirth:  ./bin/run/ gives that output too, so I tried ./bin/develop00:45
eraserpencilDagronmaster: how did you arrive at libreadline-dev? why isnt it other readline libraries?00:46
Dagronmasterbecause this program compiles against libreadline, so the -dev version is necessary00:46
DagronmasterI suspect the non-dev version will also be installed00:47
eraserpencilDagronmaster: i see. and when the output suggests visiting log files (config.log in this case), where do i go? i couldnt find it in /var/log00:48
Neo2how better to create boot flash? Last time I used unetbootin00:49
Neo2now, official site is dissipated00:49
kenrinEasy way is to just dd if=blah.iso of=/your/usb00:49
lordcirthNeo2, from Windows?  Rufus is good00:50
lordcirthkenrin, I think he's only got windows to start with00:50
kenrinWell he didn't specify00:50
Dagronmastereraserpencil:  Normally, I'd say it is in the same directory as 'configure'.  However, the build process for this thing seems to follow an unusual process.    I'd try to find a file named 'configure'.  That's where I'd expect to find config.log00:50
kenrinYou can run dd from windows though,  or cygwin,  or wsl00:50
eraserpencilDagronmaster: kk thanks00:52
Dagronmastereraserpencil:  what happens when you run ./bin/develop?00:53
eraserpencilDagronmaster: no idea. I installed the remaining dependencies that were lacking and ran ./bin/run00:54
eraserpencilgoing good so far00:54

ghostnik11hey i am trying to add a patched kernel = 4.12 that contains specific patches for my device. how can i do so using terminal because i read that i first have to get stuff like the deb image and the 2 headers first01:22
lordcirthjk^, you typed 'htop' into Terminal and pressed Enter?01:22
lordcirthghostnik11, where are you getting the kernel from?01:22
ghostnik11lordcirth, i am getting it from the google + group asus t100 with linux01:23
lordcirthghostnik11, ok, is it a .deb package, a .patch file, a .tar.gz, or what?01:24
ghostnik11lordcirth, thats the thing i just opened the folder well i used nautilus to see it because it came as a zip and was only like 160+ mb01:26
ghostnik11lordcirth, but it seems to be all patches and i am looking for the kernel = which should be deb files correct?01:26
lordcirthghostnik11, it might be best to ask the group for detailed instructions, after all they made it.01:26
oem_hello01:27
ghostnik11lordcirth, yeah i will post a question, my principal thing i want to work is just the light sensor module so that i gain the ability to dim the brightness because as it stands the brightness is turned to max level01:27
jk^lordcirth, yes01:28
lordcirthoem_, welcome01:28

lordcirthjk^, it's harder for me to help you in a non-English GUI01:29
ghostnik11lordcirth, okay so here is the patches txt file i found in it at the end it gives a little mini instruction. here it is: https://pastebin.com/TRh3PuFW01:29
jk^are there a method to create a report, i don't understand anything in htop01:30
jk^to tecnical info01:30
jk^too tecnical info01:30
lordcirthjk^, ignore the list, just look at the top, there are usage bars for CPU and RAM.01:30
kenrinIf you want reports use sar,  but that is even more technical01:30
ghostnik11lordcirth, if i am understanding correctly i think i am suppose to first get kernel 4.12 from kernel.org then add the patches to it manually? or am i misunderstanding it?01:31
lordcirthghostnik11, for the last patch, liquorix, it says that, but not the rest, seemingly.  I suppose default to Ubuntu's kernel?01:31
ghostnik11lordcirth, okay because right now i am currently in kernel 4.13 which is what my ubuntu 16.04 is using as i am talking with you. so if i understand correct i should get kernel 4.12 then get liquorix then run the patches?01:33
jk^lordcirth, i'm looking at the top, but i don't understand anything i see01:33
lordcirthjk^, ok, then try the graphical ones.01:33
lordcirthghostnik11, Liquorix doesn't seem related to backlighting?01:34
jk^what have i to see at the top?01:34
jk^to tell y?01:34
jk^to report you?01:34
lordcirthjk^, whether it's your CPU or RAM that is overloaded01:34
ghostnik11lordcirth, oh okay. well then is it possible if i have the capella driver for the backlighting can i just add it to the 4.13 kernel right now? or does it not work that way?01:35
lordcirthjk^, there are also other Ubuntu support channels for other languages, though they have less people.01:35
jk^Task: 65, 0 thr; 2 running; Load average 1,16 1,75 2,09 (with different colors) uptime 00:42:4101:36

Dagronmastergrep 'core id' /proc/cpuinfo | sort | uniq -d01:38
Dagronmaster^jk^01:38
kenrinYeah that is 1 core01:38
lordcirthjk^, yeah, 1 core, that's the problem.  Do you have a browser open?  Browsers are often the biggest thing.  You could try a lighter one01:39
ghostnik11lordcirth, okay in the modifying the configuration step, is that where i would have to add the patches?01:39
lordcirthghostnik11, yes01:39
jk^my opened app are: Software center, hexchat, htop, libre office writer, 2 mousepad app, chromium with facebook and youtube, and 2 file manager windows01:40
ghostnik11lordcirth, so then in terms of the patches like for example the one with the light sensor i would just have to have it giving execution properties and put it in the script folder?01:40
lordcirthghostnik11, is it a .patch file?  If so you'll need to use the patch tool01:41
=== tmager1 is now known as tmager
ghostnik11lordcirth, well i have the patch but the problem is i don't know where the driver goes? like when i tell it to modprobe the driver, it comes up, not found. so i have the driver downloaded and the patch already in the script folder01:42
ghostnik11lordcirth, where would i need to put the driver file in the filesystem to then have modprobe recognize it01:42
lordcirthghostnik11, /lib/modules/`uname -r`/modulename.ko01:45
lordcirthhttps://stackoverflow.com/questions/225845/how-do-i-configure-modprobe-to-find-my-module01:45
jk^lordcirth, i told you my opened app01:46
lordcirthghostnik11, https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/v4.11/process/applying-patches.html01:46
lordcirthjk^, it's a low-end laptop CPU from 2004.  It's going to be slow.  Using a lighter browser may help.01:47
jk^then the problem isn't xubuntu?01:48
jk^lordcirth,01:48
lordcirthjk^, no, it isn't Xubuntu's fault.  It's a really slow computer.01:48
jk^:((((((((01:48

jk^i'm using chromium01:49
lordcirthjk^, Lubuntu might be slightly faster.01:49

lordcirthjk^, you can install Ubuntu from the 'minimal' CD that comes without a desktop or anything, then install the Xubuntu desktop.  It would take less space, though I'm not sure it would be much faster.02:29

ghostnik11lordcirth, sorry was talking with my family. okay so i just have to put the driver = module in lib/modules and then run: uname -r and the path to the module with its name and .ko at the end02:33
lordcirthghostnik11, for the module, yes, but I think you need the kernel patch as well?02:34
ghostnik11lordcirth, i will show you what i have which is the patch? i don't think i have the kernel, i just have the patch well i have the script and i have a patch that i think is the module. here it is: https://pastebin.com/qGCw2SSG02:35
lordcirthghostnik11, you should probably get someone else to help with that, I've never needed to patch a kernel myself02:36
ghostnik11lordcirth, yeah. so its pretty complicated? because i feel like all i have to do is just compile it and then after that just put the patch where it needs to go in the script folder then thats it, b/c that is the module in that last paste bin? or is it a patch? b/c it has instructions that say how to compile02:38
lordcirthghostnik11, I don't think it's hugely complicated, it's just something that most people never need to do02:38

ghostnik11lordcirth, hey so i added the kernel 4.12, check it here: https://pastebin.com/muSSSuam04:16
lordcirthghostnik11, and did it work?04:16
ghostnik11lordcirth, using that information in the pastebin it was added and now i will restart and take the big step to see if i could just run the patch.04:16
ghostnik11lordcirth, well i haven't tried to restart and select 4.12 kernel yet04:16
lordcirthnoneal, glad to hear it.  In future, when prompted to autoremove, you should generally do it04:17
ghostnik11lordcirth, so i just booted into 4.12 generic and my sound isn't working04:21

ghostnik11lordcirth, now the real question is to see if i can get the patches to work which would bring everything and more back to normal including sound04:25
ghostnik11lordcirth, i feel like i needed to add 4.12 rc2 instead?04:31
lordcirthghostnik11, why?  That's older04:32
ghostnik11lordcirth, wait so i have 4.12 generic right now is = stable and the rc2 is considered older04:33
EldonMcGuinnessWishes gnome worked better with my BT Headphones :/04:33
lordcirthghostnik11, yes.  rc2 means release candidate 2, ie, the second attempt at making a stable one.04:33
ghostnik11lordcirth, so that means in the 4.12 stable it should be uploaded the patches already to the kernel then?04:34
lordcirthghostnik11, assuming those patches didn't break things04:34
ghostnik11lordcirth, it says patches must be in the same location as the kernel? will all of the kernels be located in etc/kernel? or no04:41
ghostnik11lordcirth, i got audio working again so thats good05:00
donavan01is it possible to install ubuntu on a SD card ... my laptop doesnt recognize sd cards as boot devices I wasnt sure if there was some way to put the boot info on my main hard disc and have it point to my SD card05:11

ghostnik11lordcirth, yeah i put -p105:13
lordcirthyour paste said l, L, not 105:13
lordcirthdonavan01, yes, that should be possible, manual partitioning should let you do that in the installer05:14
ghostnik11lordcirth, your a genius05:14
ghostnik11lordcirth, its asking me now: file to patch:?05:15
ghostnik11lordcirth, i will do a pastebin, here it is: https://pastebin.com/tbxYXWET05:16

donavan01lordcirth ... thanks I have 2 internal SD slots(pci-e card) and one external(built it) any idea which would be faster or do you think it would matter05:17

vadiHow can I fix Ubuntu thinking that the function key is always pressed down? I can't use the normal F keys because all of the alternative keyboard actions happen instead08:34
imaduhi08:35
imaduHi! all08:35
alkisgvadi: Fn keys are usually hardware, they're not managed by the OS08:35
alkisgDoes it work properly e.g. in Windows or in the BIOS?08:36
vadiI don't use Windows08:36
alkisgAnswer the second part then08:36
alkisgAbout bios08:36
vadiI don't think I can use those keys in the BIOS to begin with08:37
alkisgSure, "F10 = save, F12=netboot " etc08:37
alkisgThere are many Fxx combinations valid in BIOS08:37
vadiI'll have a look.08:37
daxvadi: there's probably an option in your firmware to change the default behavior, i know my Lenovo and HP laptops both have that08:38
daxbut yeah, it's not something Ubuntu handles, it's down lower than that :)08:38
vadiI can't try the F keys in the bios as it's not an old-school one but a modern graphical one08:44
vadiThis is on a Dell Latitude E7470 - and the Fn keys used to work fine before, this regression happened sometime recently even though I am still on the same kernel08:45

laceylaneyHI Guys.... Just installed openbox with obmenu, but obmenu will not launch. Whenever I try to run it from a terminal I get "Error: Couldn't create default menu file!" Anyone know why I cannot launch it ??09:11
alkisgb3h3m0th: pink screen?09:11
vadialkisg: there were no shortcuts listed, there was just the mouse and buttons09:11
b3h3m0thyea the GRUB screen's color09:11
b3h3m0thUbuntu's color09:12
alkisgvadi: read the man page or google it or use a live cd. If you make sure that it works *anywhere* else, then we can start thinking it may be an OS issue09:12
alkisg*the UEFI documentation, your manual09:12
alkisgb3h3m0th: uncomment #GRUB_TERMINAL=console in /etc/default/grub, and run update-grub, and reboot. This will avoid the pink color, so that you can read error messages09:13
alkisg(assuming that now you don't see error messages, that is)09:13
b3h3m0thI had commented GRUB_GFXpayload_linux=None and set  GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x76809:14

alkisgb3h3m0th: GRUB_TERMINAL uses the black/white text mode, so that you can report error messages that may be hidden in the pink mode09:15
alkisgvadi: from your manual: when the Dell logo appears, you can: • Access System Setup by pressing F2 key • Bring up the one-time boot menu by pressing F12 key09:15
alkisgThere are many shortcuts listed in your UEFI firmware09:16
alkisgF1 Displays the System Setup help file.09:16
alkisgUnobtrusive Mode This option, when enabled, pressing Fn+F7 turns off all light and sound emissions in the system. To resume normal operation, press Fn+F7 again. This option is disabled by default.09:16
alkisgvadi: and there are lots of options to configure the Fn key, e.g. Fn Key Emulation Allows you to set the option where the Scroll Lock key is used to simulate the Fn key feature. Enable Fn Key Emulation (default)09:18
alkisgAnd Fn Lock Options right below that09:18

alkisg...not anymore :)09:57

neureapparently delgroup --system --only-if-empty hangs10:23
alkisg(11:57:46 πμ) b3h3m0th: It's abnormal for something legitimate to write to MBR apart from some installation phase? ==> it depends; some OSes require the "boot flag" so it may be necessary for dual booting; although recent versions of windows shouldn't require that10:25
alkisg(changing it; they need it but ubuntu doesn't, so there's no need to constantly write to it)10:25
alkisgNowadays uefi/gpt is used, so no mbr code there anyway10:25
b3h3m0thI see10:26
b3h3m0thI don't have UEFI support on my board though10:26

ubottuLaunchpad bug 1064151 in ubiquity (Ubuntu) "ubiquity crashed with TypeError in partman_dialog(): 'NoneType' object is not subscriptable" [Medium,Confirmed]17:54
pagsI can't seem to find any solutions around this and have tried on multiple usbs....any help would be greatly appreciated.17:54
duhamelis there a way to install latest amdgpu-pro with 17.1017:54
duhamelpags have you ran an md5sum on your iso? you can boot into live environment from usb? which ubuntu version?17:56
pagsA bit of a newcomer to linux so I have no idea what 'md5sum' is...ubuntu 16.04 is the version I am using...I believe I am able to run in a live environment as when I selected 'Try ubuntu without installing' when intially booting, things apppear to run smoothly - it is only when I click on the install ubuntu icon that things go awry...it seems like my system is not recognizing my disk partitions and then I am thrown with this ubiquity is17:58
Neo2what does means rpm?17:58
ikoniaNeo2: it means not for ubuntu - it's a package format for a different distro17:58
ikoniapags: what's your actual problem ?17:59
Neo2I downloaded skype rpm and have run it17:59
ikoniaNeo2: bad idea17:59
Neo2it's independent program?17:59
electricmilkYou can convert rpm to deb with alien17:59
Neo2ikonia: why?17:59
ikoniaNeo2: no,17:59
Neo2ikonia: but why it run?17:59
electricmilkBut way better to just download the .deb file for skype17:59
Neo2ikonia: how install it?17:59
ikoniaNeo2: it's designed for redhat based systems17:59
ikoniaNeo2: because it's not designed for ubuntu17:59
ikoniaNeo2: you don't, it's not meant for ubuntu17:59
electricmilkYou can convert rpm though but...why would you for skype17:59
Neo2ok, will seek for ubuntu17:59
pagsikonia - I am unable to install ubuntu due to a ubiquity error when attempting to install18:00
ikoniapags: does it actually error18:00
duhamelpags: Type "md5", type a space, drag the iso file into the terminal window (appends command with iso file path), and press Enter. The command line returns the hash number18:00
ikoniaNeo2: you should not try to convert rpms18:00
ikoniathat only really works for non-arch-specific rpms18:00
duhamelthen check ubuntus website to compare the number to their md5sum listed18:01
Neo2ikonia: how install skype?18:01
Neo2there one distr18:01
ikonia!skype | Neo218:01
ubottuNeo2: To install Skype on Ubuntu, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Skype - To record on Skype, check: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SkypeRecordingHowto - Please use open protocols instead if you can, see !Ekiga18:01
duhamelpags: another thing is to format your hard drive with gparted before using the installer. are you using "erase and install" or "something else" option in the installer18:03
ikoniapags: I'm interested in the error and your disk setup, eg: a raided disk or encypted18:05
pagsduhamel the only option I select is 'english' on the first screen and then it seems to go to the screen where I select whether to 'install third-party software for graphics and wifi-hardware...'18:05
pagsI leave the box unchecked and then hit continue18:05
Neo2ikonia: that skype that I download in rpm we can run without install18:06
pagsand then on the 'instalation type' screen there is no drives detected and when I click chance it says 'ubuntu has experienced an internal error'18:06
Neo2ikonia: ./ and all works18:06
pagsand gives the ubiquity error18:06
duhamelokay are you dual booting or just installing ubuntu?18:07
pagsjust installing ubuntu18:07
ikoniaNeo2: once again - I advise you not to do that18:08
pagsits on a asus 270a motherboard using a 7th gen celeron intel processor18:08
duhamelare you connected to the internet with the live environment?18:08
pagsI have not placed my wifi adapter in yet18:08
pagsso no I am not connected to the internet18:09
Neo2ikonia: why? See, I can create folder where I'll store all this apps, and make shellscript for run it?18:09
ikoniaNeo2: for the reason I've said 2 times - it's not designed for ubuntu18:09
Neo2ikonia: that skype from rmp is not installed, it uses own files18:09
Neo2ikonia: it's portable?18:10
gambl0rewhy am i still seeing my windows drive mounted in ubuntu?18:10
ikoniaNeo2: I'm bored of explaining this now, do what you want, I've advised you not to do this, do what you want18:10
Neo2why it works without installation?18:10
Neo2if app is not portable it can work too?18:10
leftyfbgambl0re: that's a loaded question. Might want to clarify.18:10
ikoniaNeo2: you've probably just expanded it, an rpm is basically a cpio archive18:10
electricmilkNeo2,  Here is a good guide to install skype on ubuntu https://www.lifewire.com/install-skype-4-3-in-ubuntu-15-10-220206218:11
Neo2ikonia: see what I have http://storage5.static.itmages.com/i/17/1229/h_1514571094_5715084_7895fae0fd.png18:11
gambl0rewhen i open up Folders i can still see my windows drive even though im booted in ubuntu18:11
ikoniaNeo2: I don't care what you have18:12
duhameli would connect to the net with a hard line just to make things easier. some wifi adapters can still be a pain in the ass even with 16.0418:12
ikoniaNeo2: it doesn't change anything I've said18:12
Neo2electricmilk: I extracted files and got two folders18:12
leftyfbgambl0re: it's probably not mounted till you click on it.18:12
Neo2ikonia: but it's works, and sublime 3 also worked in this way18:12
leftyfbgambl0re: Ubuntu should/will list all available drives for mounting that are attached18:12
duhamelmost will work out of the box but some oddballs dont18:12
ikoniaNeo2: you've said that, and I've explained why it's a bad idea,18:12
pagsduhamel: Could you advise on the next steps I should take when I connect to the internet? My ethernet port quite is far and it will take a bit of effort to get connected to it18:12
ikoniaNeo2: so it's up to you what you want to do18:12
pagsill have to move the setup over18:13
Neo2ikonia: ok18:13
leftyfbgambl0re: https://askubuntu.com/questions/124094/how-to-hide-an-ntfs-partition-from-ubuntu18:14
leftyfbgambl0re: look at the 2nd post18:14
gambl0recan it be potentially hazardous if i just left it?18:15
Neo2electricmilk: I couldn't find this url #deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu yakkety partner18:16
Neo2I shuuld add it?18:16
duhamelpags: i would connect to internet, leave additional software and updates unchecked. sometimes after you select next after this step it can take a while to move on. the next screen is where to install. select something else. click the hdd you want to use then click the plus sign, make a 1024 mb ext4 partition for /boot check the format box. make a 10240mb ext4 partition for / and most of the rest for /home. after that you could also18:17
duhamelmake a swap area if on hdd (i skip this step on sdd)18:17
Neo2why there urls are differ? http://storage4.static.itmages.com/i/17/1229/h_1514571446_8148315_ee642fc12c.png18:17
pagsok that makes sense - is there any particular reason that being connected to the internet would help in the installation process?18:18
pagsWhen I get to the partition screen it just shows me an empty screen where my ubiquity crashes - why would being connected to the internet solve this?18:19
duhamelthen click next and follow instructions. im running asus z270i with no problems getting through installer. just double check the md5 and make sure you're connected to the internet before installing.18:19
pagsalso I tried running md5 on the installation file and it gives me a 'md5' command not found18:20
duhamelthat sounds more like a currupt iso than a connection problem.18:20
pagsi have tried xubuntu as well as ubuntu...followed the steps identically from https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-create-a-usb-stick-on-windows#018:21
duhamelsorry its md5sum that you type, not just md518:22
may_i am trying to install ubuntu server on a new ESP but it installs on a full ESP i specifically told it to not use, gives "grub-install failed" and now i cant boot my other distro.18:23
TheWildhello18:24
duhamelpags: unetbootin is another tool for writing iso images to usb for windows. maybe give that a try if the rufus way doesn't work.18:24
duhamelHi all, cannot get ubuntu 17.10 to boot even with clean install. i think its graphic related. amd rx480 do not have AMDGPU-pro installed. if i choose recovery op[tions at grub then boot normally it works.18:24
TheWildthere's "Install third-party software..." during installation. I don't want to install it right now. Will I be able to install it later as easily as like the option was checked?18:25
TheWildah nvm. https://askubuntu.com/questions/290293/how-can-i-install-the-third-party-software-option-after-ive-skipped-it-in-the18:27
pagsduhamel I appreciate the help - one more question any thoughts on where this iso file would be located?18:27
duhamelwell, if you downloaded it in windows it would be int the download folder of the windows partition. you will have to look in that partition with the live ubuntu18:28
pagsthe only thing I see on my usb is this 'install ubuntu 16.04.03 LTS' file whicch does not appear to be an iso18:29
pagskeep in mind, this usb is plugge into my motherboard18:30
duhamelis it plugged into the same motherboard that the windows is installed on?18:31
pagsno that motherboard has nothing installed on it18:32
Neo2rpm is for fedora deb for debian18:32
pagshence trying to install ubuntu OS18:32
ikoniaNeo2: you where told that ages ago18:32
Neo2ikonia: I didn't understand instantly18:33
Neo2because this work well18:33
ikoniathis has been explained to you 10+ times18:33
ikoniaI'm not sure why you are still going on about it18:33
duhamelokay do you have another blank thumbdrive?18:34
duhamelone that will fit ubuntu on it?18:34
pagswhat do you mean fit ubuntu on it?18:35
pagsIt is a 64 gb usb18:35
duhamelwell i could give you instructions on how to download and burn a clean copy of ubuntu onto another thumb drive using the live environment ubuntu that you're on.18:37
duhamelthe problem is that it's hard to troubleshoot a new install with an inexperienced user because there are a lot of variables18:38
Neo2ikonia: I've installed from here , works good like that from rpm https://askubuntu.com/questions/7498/how-do-i-install-skype/932189#93218918:38
pagsduhamel do you have a link with good instructions to do so?18:39
pagsotherwise I totally understand --- It is definitely a tricky side to be giving advise on18:40
ikoniaNeo2: how many times do you have to be told this ?18:40
duhamelill look, one second.18:40
pagsjust want to make sure this is a good bet before I make the arduous effort of moving the setup over to the ethernet port18:41
duhamelpags: https://www.debugpoint.com/2016/07/how-to-write-iso-image-to-usb-drive-in-ubuntu/ this is a simple way to do it with gui.18:46
duhamelpags: 1 connect ubuntu machine to internet, 2 download copy of ubuntu 16.04 from ubuntu's lts page, 3 verify download integrity  with md5sum command in terminal, 4 follow https://www.debugpoint.com/2016/07/how-to-write-iso-image-to-usb-drive-in-ubuntu/18:48
geniiAlternately, if you're already on a linux machine, just use dd to write it18:50
pagsok I think that makes sense duhamel -- will keep you updated if you are around for the next bit...thanks for the selfless help18:53
duhamelpags: okay bro. no problem hopefully it works out. welcome to linux! be persistant and you will be installing Arch and building LFS in no time!18:55
pagswhen I download the clean copy of ubuntu where should I store that file?18:59
pagshaha thanks buddy, it is about time I become familiar with the linux architecture - I have no idea what those things are, but I am sure that is the dream19:00
lordcirthpags, you may find this useful if you wish to learn: https://linuxjourney.com/19:06
pagsthanks lordcirth, will be taking a deep dive if I can get linux downloaded haha19:08
duhameldownload it to the download folder, or wherever, it doesn't matter. as long as you know where it is.19:12

Neo2what in ubuntu use for torrents files? In windows it's mutorrent19:44
Neo2but it doesnt' have linux coppy19:44
ikoniaNeo2: there are loads of torrent clients, open the package manager and search for torrent19:45

Neo2there from repository accessts tor browser too19:46

Neo2ikonia: there tor browser is accessable from repository too19:51

ikoniaNeo2: you asked about a torrent browser ?19:57
ikoniaNeo2: what is your native language ?19:57
briiani created a usb but it's not detecting it in bios19:57
Neo2almost do the developing computer ) install LAMP and translator and can say all are prapeared19:57
ikoniaNeo2: what is your native language to talk in ?19:58
Neo2ikonia: ) yes, when I was founding torrent I found tor too19:58
adderklingon19:58
Neo2ikonia: Russian and Ukrainian both native19:59
ikoniaNeo2: you may want to try #ubuntu-ru19:59
Neo2ikonia: I perfectly understand in English, not, have already tried it, there little users20:00
Neo2ikonia: better here :)20:00
ikoniaNeo2: you don't seem to understand English, as you are struggling to communicate things or understand information, hence why I was suggesting #ubuntu-ru maybe better20:01
Neo2ikonia: I try to search in ru-net when can't find in en-net20:01
ikoniaagain ru-net/en-net - no-one is talking about that20:01
ikoniaI was suggesting you join #ubuntu-ru for native language discussio20:01

Neo2ikonia: no, I probably intermediate English, can understand language, its hight level )20:02

soLucienSo i'm using Ubuntu 16.04 which has openssl v 1.7.2 as the release version . I want to update to 1.7.5. I used this gist https://gist.github.com/stefansundin/0fd6e9de172041817d0b8a75f1ede677 to build it from source  but ran into issues with APT20:16
jrp93soLucien, --force-depends all the things20:17
soLucienso how do i install https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openssh/1:7.5p1-220:17
lordcirthsoLucien, why do you need 1.7.5?20:18
ikoniasoLucien: don't built it from source20:18
soLucienlordcirth: because of the -J flag20:18
jrp93it's not from source20:18
ikoniasoLucien: trust the package manager and the packages built by ubuntu20:18

ikoniajrp93: that is "from source"20:19

soLucienyes i am installing some packages20:19
ikoniajrp93: he said "to build it from source"20:20

ikoniahe actually said the words "to build it from source"20:20
soLucieni didn't build from source20:20
jrp93he says that cause he doesn't know what he's talking about20:20
soLucieni know what build from source20:20
soLucieni USED THIS SOURCE to install it20:20

ikoniajust use the ubuntu packages20:20
lordcirthsoLucien, read your first comment: " to build it from source  but ran into issues with APT"20:20

soLucienikonia because it lacks a feature20:23
soLucienthat I direly want20:24
ikoniasoLucien: what feature ?20:24
ikoniayou've just posted a link to an ssh repo - but you where trying to install SSL earlier ?20:25
soLucienit lacks -J which was added in 1.7.320:25
ikoniawhat is -J ?20:25
soLucienhttps://www.openssh.com/txt/release-7.320:25

soLucienAdd a ProxyJump option and corresponding -J command-line    flag20:25
ikoniaif you wanted ssh why are you installing ssl ?20:26
soLucienit's a ssh client proxy jump option20:26
ikoniayes, you said that20:26
ikoniabut if you wanted ssh why are you installing ssl packages20:26
soLucienikonia i need openssh-client_7.5p1-10_amd64.deb . This may depend on the other packages20:29
ikonia"may"? ?20:29
ikoniayou should "know" before installing other things20:29
soLucienwhat's with the passive aggressive attitude man20:29

ikoniathis all looks really sloppy and to be honest, pointless20:29
ikoniasoLucien: there is nothing passive agressive about it20:29
soLucienthis is my VM i am trying to make this work20:29
ikoniaasking questions and trying to understand what you are doing is not passive agressive20:29
soLucienit's a dev server20:29
ikoniasoLucien: just because it's a VM doesn't change anything20:29
soLucienand i am asking for advice ,20:30
soLucienso i can do it in a better way20:30
ikoniaright, and the advice is a.) don't do it b.) don't install dependencies you don't know it needs20:30
soLucienikonia so i *NEED* this functionality. It's been around since 2016 . I want to write my shell scripts using the -J option for ssh-client .20:32
ikoniasoLucien: if it's been around since 2016 and it's almost 2018 - I doubt you *need* it20:33
soLucienubuntu 16.04 has not added it for some reason or another . How do I get it ?20:33
ikoniaprobably because there is no need to add it to 16.0420:33
ikoniait maybe in the non-LTS releases ready for the next LTS 18.04 release20:34
soLucieni am a USER of ubuntu 16.04 and i need this functionality. Who are you to decide what i need and what i don't20:34
soLucienlisten to yourself20:34
ikoniaI'm not deciding what you need and what you don't20:34
ikoniaI said I doubt you need it20:34
dreamcat4uh... you could install it in a docker container. with newer ubuntu image (inside the container)20:38
ikoniabuilding a docker service for an ssh jump host....20:38
ikoniabit overkill20:38
dreamcat4this would not mess around with the other deps in your host ubuntu 16.04 system20:39
dreamcat4so its good in that respect20:39
dreamcat4or you could try to find some statically linked version of ssh20:39
dreamcat4that didnt have the lib deps20:39
dreamcat4ikonia: if you dont wish to do those other options then... upgrade your ubuntu version20:40
dreamcat4nobody here is stopping you20:40
ikoniaI don't need any of this20:40
ikoniaI'm quite happy doing it myself if I wanted to update package versions20:40
dreamcat4great then20:41
ikoniahence why I'm not asking for help on it20:41
dreamcat4this is really the crux of linux issues BTW... so i am sympathetic to this stuff20:41
ikoniathere is no linux issue20:41
dreamcat4package versions, and not enough people to maintain a million distro-specifc packages and their dependancies20:42
ikoniathe distros maintain their packages really well20:42
dreamcat4its an issue of linux, because there are so many different distros20:42
ikonianot really the distro's maintain their own packages just fine20:42
dreamcat4its a huge duplication of work20:42
dreamcat4if we had a common package format we wouldnt be repeating ourselves half so much20:43
ikoniathis is offtopic for this channel really20:43
ikonia#ubuntu-offtopic would be a good place for that discussion20:43

ghostnik11hey when a person is like making a kernel or adding it through git is it okay after it passes the scripts that it uses as a default the regular kernel in 4.12 when i using a 4.9.19 kernel configuration22:15
rwsBashing-om: Yes. I am on virtual console.22:15

ghostnik11okay when your asked questions like: expose hardware/virtual irq mapping via debugfs and it gives you the option [N/Y/?] does that mean you should select N since thats the first one it gave22:23
rwsBashing-om: https://paste.ubuntu.com/26281205/22:23
Bashing-omrws: K, looks good - next up is did the nvidia module build ' lsmod | grep nvidia ' in a pastebin .22:25
ghostnik11Kernel .config support (IKCONFIG) = No or Yes?22:29
rwsBashing-om: https://paste.ubuntu.com/26281235/22:31
TJ-ghostnik11: your questions would be better addressed in ##kernel, or via the kernel's Documentation/ Kbuild docs22:32
Bashing-omrws: module did build . now what is installed ' dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia ' ?22:33
ghostnik11TJ-, yeah i think i already selected some answers bad in this test to build this kernel from git but i am starting to understand that usually the first option they give you is what they want you to select?22:33
ghostnik11TJ-, hey whats your opinion? is that usually normal when running a command in terminal and it gvies you the first letter for what you should select?22:36
TJ-ghostnik11: are you running "make oldconfig" ?22:36
ghostnik11TJ-, i just ran make config22:37
ghostnik11TJ-, but it did take the oldconfig from 4.12 or something like that it said22:37

VladimirskiI want to verify the validity of an iso from ubuntu's website but the page where I get the shasum's is not secure23:49
Vladimirskiit's not https23:49

Vladimirskithe download link takes me to a non-secure website23:50
dekatchthe linkds provided on their page should be secure, but i am fairly sure there should be some hash around to verify23:51
bazhanghttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes Vladimirski try that23:51
daxthe shasums are gnupg signed. UbuntuHashes used to have them too but then they removed them because lol wiki23:51
Vladimirskibazhang: thanks, but it's the same results, I click on the download link but it's not secure: http://releases.ubuntu.com/23:52
daxso verify them with gpg23:52
dekatchyou have to compate the hashes once you downloaded?23:52
dekatchor the other way23:52
VladimirskiI've downloaded the hashes and compared the, they are the same yes, but the page where I got them from is not secure. So how do I know both the hash and the iso hasn't been tethered with?23:53
jrp93G P G23:53
jrp93It's a signature23:53
daxyou compare the .iso with the hashfile. you verify the hashfile with the gpg signature of the hashfile23:53
dekatchi dont think there is an infected or hyperjacked link on ubuntu.com23:53
dekatchand it, for sure not for long23:53
