jk^hi all01:54
jk^i'm trying xubuntu01:54
jk^but it often is slow :(01:54
jk^i don't know if the problems are the no-official drive, or what :\01:54
jk^is there in xubuntu a log of what i see during starting up?02:17
flocculantjk^: no idea what no-official drive means, check /var/log for various logs and also journalctl06:01
jk^ehm excuse for my english06:02
jk^i mean06:02
jk^i just installed xubuntu but after i had not installed audio drivers, video drivers and ethernet drivers like i did on windows...06:03
jk^i guess i have to install driver downloaded from official site such as "Intel (for video card), HP for audio card and official site of my usb-ethernet adapter)06:04
flocculantthat's because in windows you need to install that stuff - I sometimes install a graphics driver, never the other 206:04
flocculantif there is a graphics driver available for you it will be in Additional Drivers in the Settings menu06:05
flocculantopen a terminal and run top - leave it running, when you think the machine is slow - look at top and see what's the first process06:06
flocculantalso of course it could be slow because low ram, slow cpu06:10
jk^where i found "top"?06:11
jk^i prefer gui way06:11
flocculantjust type top in the terminal and then enter06:11
jk^flocculant, i did it06:26
jk^but isn't there another way to open this "top"?06:26
jk^i prefer gui way :\ in terminal i have too much fear to do wrong, error06:27
jk^however flocculant i have problem even with archive manager06:27
jk^https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dEUp2r1yoNFog-pfVGTfK6pF4EJXTP5K/view?usp=sharing06:29
jk^https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ezzAz0mCP0C_DYldM23nY59MlzgqhgtV/view?usp=sharing06:29
jk^however flocculant i tupe "top" in terminal but i don't understand anything about what i see06:47
jk^:\06:47
flocculantjk^: no idea about the archive manager - don't understand what it says07:16
jk^i translate for you07:17
flocculantdidn't expect you to understand top - you just need to know what the first process is when the machine slows down07:17
flocculantand also - you've not said what spec the machine is07:17
jk^1,4 GHz Celeron M; 2 GB RAM;07:19
jk^flocculant,07:19
jk^i read the reccomendend system requirements, it should be run on this machien07:19
jk^machine07:19
flocculantyea it will run - not the fastest experience though07:22
jk^i went in "Sotware"->"Utility"->"Archivation"07:22
jk^but there isn't app like file roller or ark07:22
jk^:\07:22
jk^they don't appers07:22
jk^appears07:22
flocculantit's in Accessories07:22
flocculantoh07:22
flocculantwhat is Sotware"->"Utility"->"Archivation ?07:23
jk^ok but sometimes, the experience is not the fastest but it's properly very slow :-o07:23
jk^eh07:23
jk^software07:23
flocculantis that the software app?07:23
jk^the app to install and unistall apps07:23
jk^utility is an its section07:23
flocculantoh right - there is an archive tool installed07:23
jk^and after there is the section of the archive manager apps07:24
jk^but it doesn't appear anything07:24
flocculantyea ok - understand that07:24
jk^yes but the default app, give me error messages07:24
flocculantsigh07:24
flocculantwhich you've screenshot in google (again) in some language - sorry bud but I can read English07:25
flocculanttry the italian channel - which you know about :)07:26
jk^"It happens an error during the archive loading - "Fatal error"07:28
jk^in the other image is the same07:29
jk^messages07:29
jk^except for "UTF-8 error"07:29
jk^flocculant, i'm trying also to search for "ark" or "roller" in the Software's searchbox, but it doesn't appears anything, i need to open those archive, in them there are many important information i can't lose :( pls help me07:41
bazhangjk^, how many channels are you crossposting to now07:46
bazhangplease don't07:46
* flocculant wanders off07:46
jk^i'm looking for someone can help me07:49
jk^:\ i need those info included in those archives :(07:49
MaxisAsking again and again won't help, just wait, someone might come back and know how to help you. It's understood that you urgently need whatever is in them, but knowing that doesn't help anybody know what to do.07:51
bazhangjk^, it's a holiday weekend, so patience is a must07:52
MaxisFrom Christmas to New Year's, things will always be slow.07:53
bazhangjk^, if you need very immediate help, you might check out a ubuntu loco or lug07:53
bazhangyep, with around a week on either side07:54
flocculantjk^: if you have an error with the archive with one tool - you're likely to have the same issue with others07:56
flocculantyou've given no-one any real information about the problem - just 2 very generic pictures07:56
bazhangjk^, if you tell us what region you are in, we might point you to a local channel or linux users group07:56
flocculantgetting help in linux is a 2 way thing - you give us info - we try to help07:57
flocculantbazhang: italian - at least they talk italian in the #u-it channel07:57
flocculantwhich they know about07:57
jk^ok07:57
jk^thanks a lot07:58
jk^i'll wait07:58
bazhangflocculant, yeah the two bits of info he showed were not very helpful at all07:58
flocculantbazhang: yup07:58
bazhangjk^, waiting wont create new answers until you give very detailed info07:59
jk^however i don't know which kind of info give you07:59
jk^i use linux since 4-5 days07:59
jk^:\07:59
jk^i have to be disintossicated from windows07:59
jk^:\07:59
bazhangjk^, you some hdd/usb stick or what with info you MUST Have08:00
jk^i have to detoxify myself from windows :P08:01
jk^excuse for my english08:01
bazhangjk^, did you wish to chat or get help here08:01
jk^get help by chatting08:02
jk^how to gather detailed info do u need?08:02
bazhangjk^, you have had that count for several months08:02
bazhangbut you say 4-5 days08:02
jk^yes, i installed few days ago08:03
jk^before i had to resolve many other problems08:03
jk^even problems in my life08:03
bazhangjk^, I *just* asked a question above08:03
jk^i don't understand, excuse me08:03
jk^<bazhang> jk^, you some hdd/usb stick or what with info you MUST Have08:03
jk^this?08:04
bazhangjk^, HDD oe USB stick or what08:04
jk^now the os is installed on hdd08:04
jk^before i just tried it on usb08:04
jk^just to try08:04
bazhangthe info you must retrieve and need NOW is where08:04
jk^after i installed it08:04
jk^ahhhhhhhhhh08:04
jk^the archives is on an external hd08:05
bazhangjk^, was it a windows ntfs hard drive08:05
jk^yes08:05
bazhangjk^, what happened when you connected it to a windows computer08:06
jk^autoplay08:06
jk^and it ask me what to do08:06
jk^i open it by file manager08:06
bazhangjk^, so the files are all movies, music and so on08:06
jk^even documents, photo08:07
jk^software08:07
bazhangyes08:07
bazhangso they work great with connecting to a windows computer08:07
bazhangjk^, dont think about software, windows software is not going to just run on a ubuntu computer, lets focus on getting the documents/movies/music/photos08:10
bazhangjk^, is the problem that you cannot get them, OR is the problem that they will not autoplay on your ubuntu computer08:12
bazhangjk^, are you still there?08:13
bazhangjk^, can you understand what I am asking?08:13
jk^yes, they work great even in xubuntu08:16
bazhangjk^, you didnt answer what I was asking08:17
jk^wait, i have to read again08:17
jk^my poor english08:17
bazhangjk^, works on windows computer yes or no08:17
jk^ok documents, movies, music, photos work great... i know the software file will not run in linux, for examper .exe file... that's not a problem...08:18
bazhangjk^, sorry I cannot help as you will not even answer the most basic things I am asking you08:19
jk^external hd autoplay even in ubuntu08:19
jk^to browse it by file manager08:19
jk^my problem is with archives08:19
jk^for the precision, now i'm having problems with .rar08:19
bazhangjk^, the archive sounds corrupted08:19
bazhangjk^, so it's some kind of file-sharing rar that wont open for you08:20
jk^what corrupt them? :-o08:20
jk^before i uninstall windows and install xubuntu they works08:21
bazhangjk^, that happens sometimes when downloading things on the internet08:21
jk^and i don't do any operation on them08:21
bazhangjk^, so get  another one08:21
flocculantrarely use archives - but does file-roller actually support .rar files?08:24
bazhangI just get 'unp'08:25
bazhangthat handles it all08:25
flocculant:)08:25
flocculantnever heard of that - thanks bazhang :)08:25
bazhangnp!08:25
flocculantthat says "blah blah "unrar-nonfree" ..."08:26
bazhangjk^, so you cannot get something.something.rar to open08:26
flocculantlooking at synaptic - file-roller doesn't appear to support rar08:26
bazhangand it's likely some drm/pw-prtected thing08:27
jk^what is synaptic?08:27
bazhangjk^, what is the rar of08:27
flocculantjk^: don't worry about synaptic08:27
jk^please i hope you understand my difficult, i use xubuntu since few days, after about 20 year of bill gates dipendence08:28
flocculantsigh08:28
flocculantthat shouldn't stop you answering questions08:28
bazhangjk^, please just answer what I ask08:28
jk^so now i have to accustom tu linux world08:28
flocculantstop it08:29
bazhangjk^, what is the RAR of08:29
jk^i don't know what is synaptic... and RAR is a simple file with several file within it bazhang08:30
jk^with password08:30
daxas far as .rar files go: if unrar from ultiverse doesn't work, you're screwed on Linux pretty much08:31
jk^there's even personal text document08:31
bazhangjk^, it's corrupt, file-roller wont help, get another copy08:31
daxit's a crap file format with a bunch of stupid extensions that aren't supported by random unarchivers08:31
daxs/ultiverse/multiverse/08:31
daxso if you don't have a Windows handy to use WinRar to get it open... too bad08:31
bazhang!ultimatix08:31

bazhanghaha08:31
flocculant0_008:31
flocculantlol - not seen that for a long time08:32
bazhangthat slipped by somehow08:32
flocculant:)08:32
flocculantjk^: enable Multiverse in Software & Updates (it's in the Settings menu) then close that and reload when it tells you08:34
flocculantthen you will be able to install unrar, sudo apt install unrar08:34
flocculantthen use that08:34
jk^ok08:34
flocculanthttps://askubuntu.com/questions/41791/whats-the-easiest-way-to-unrar-a-file08:35
jk^it's already checked08:35
jk^flocculant,08:35
flocculantok - so do the next thing - install unrar08:36
flocculantand if you still have problems - then the issue is the archive itself08:36
jk^software doesn't show me anything :\08:36
flocculantdo you EVER read anything?08:36
flocculantI told you how to install it ...08:36
jk^is unrar an app?08:37
flocculantwell - I didn't say use a terminal I suppose08:37
jk^and to install an app, have i to use "Software" right? :\08:37
flocculantopen a terminal - sudo apt install unrar - enter - tell it the password08:37
flocculantSoftware is neutered - half of anything useful never shows up08:38
jk^but I opened software, i went in "Utility" and in the Subsection for the archiviation tools, but it doesn't appears anything08:38
flocculantstill wish we didn't seed it ...08:38
flocculantjk^: will you please READ08:38
flocculantstop using Software - it won't show there08:38
jk^even if i try to searc the word "rar" in the search box, there is the simbol which rotate rotate rotate with no end, and it doesn't show me any results08:39
bazhangjk^, please close 'software'08:39
flocculant...08:39
bazhangjk^, did you close 'software'08:40
jk^yes08:40
bazhangjk^, open a terminal08:41
bazhangjk^, did you open a terminal08:42
jk^yes08:43
bazhangjk^, in the terminal type this  sudo apt install unrar08:43
bazhangjk^, then give it your password08:44
jk^i did it08:44
bazhangjk^, and what happened08:45
jk^i think it installed somethign08:45
jk^something08:45
bazhanggreat08:45
jk^now may i try to open the archive?08:46
bazhangjk^, go to the .rar and right click  open with unrar08:46
jk^i can't find it08:47
bazhangfind what08:47
jk^it appears just the default archive manager08:48
bazhangdid you use the right hand button on your mouse08:48
jk^yes08:48
bazhangand did that open a menu08:48
jk^yes08:49
jk^i try with default app08:49
jk^second icon of default app08:49
jk^and even with "open with"08:49
bazhangjk^, choose 'open with' unrar08:49
jk^but it doesn't appear "unrar"08:49
jk^:(((((((((((08:51
jk^so sad08:51
jk^so nervous08:51
jk^now i have to go away08:51

TudorManHi guys16:23
TudorManI just had a weird problem with my Xubuntu setup16:23
TudorManI configured my laptop to use the proprietary NVIDIA drivers. I tried nvidia-340 because they were claimed to work with my GPU. I reboot, kernel error occurs. Keeps looping round listing a bunch of broken commands and basically just refusing to boot.16:25
TudorManInstead of booting to recovery and just removing the NVIDIA drivers, I removed the NVIDIA drivers and installed nouveau16:26
TudorManThis prompted a lot of xorg packages to be removed and only nouveau reinstalled. Could anyone tell me why this happened?16:27
TudorManThis basically ended in my laptop booting to a black screen for a while until I reinstalled xorg, and at that point my mouse and keyboard wouldn't work at the login screen, so I followed some advice on stackexchange and installed xserver-xorg-input-all, xubuntu-desktop, and xserver-xorg-video-vmware16:30
ikoniadepends what the kernel error was16:30
TudorManThis fixed my problem and I'm now booted again, but I'm not sure whether I'm missing any other important packages16:30
TudorManapt is also saying I have some unneeded packages, except they seem needed to me16:32
TudorManThe following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:16:32
TudorMan  bbswitch-dkms dkms lib32gcc1 libc6-i386 libcuda1-340 libxfont2 libxnvctrl016:32
TudorMan  screen-resolution-extra xserver-xorg-legacy-hwe-16.0416:32
ikoniaprobably not needed16:33
TudorManthanks ikonia. It seems they're leftovers from the nvidia drivers.16:34
TudorManI'll just do a quick reboot to make sure everything still wors16:34
TudorMan*Works16:34
TudorManDoesn't seem dead16:37
