jvmHi. During runtime of the system -- half an hour after boot -- I see systemd-modules-load in my syslog, and a number of issues following, with eventual system crash. All I can find indicates that systemd-modules-load should only run on boot, not while the system is in use. Can anyone point me at possible causes?00:28

jk^Ok lotuspsychje it has opened GNU GRUB version 2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.1410:15
Bh_lotuspsychje: I can install 16.04 (that's the LTS no?) which honestly was installed up till recently on my laptop but I prefer to wait a day or 2 for 17.10 if it will be released soon, the issue is that don't know if its a day or 2 or a month... is there any expected date?10:15
aftrshocklotuspsychje: I'm trying to install it10:15
aftrshockW10 dual boot10:15
lapionalkisg, nothing found10:16
Bh_I had issues with 16.04 concering using dual screens which I understood was fixed later on (dealt with it about a month ago so my memory is a little fuzzy ;))10:17
lotuspsychjeBh_: the bug is currently active, alot of users say higher kernels fix this issue10:17
jk^What have i to do now? -  ubuntu - advanced options - memory test - memory test serial control10:17
alkisglapion: and if you manually start gnome-panel, it runs normally?10:17
aftrshockaftrshock: ideally once I get past the hanging screen, I'm hoping the installer will recognize as give a "isntall alongside Windows " option10:17
aftrshockso I dont have to shrink volumes in W10:17
lotuspsychjejk^: try a previous kernel boot10:17
aftrshockor manually create a swap, etc10:17
Bh_lotuspsychje: but is there any ETA?10:17
aftrshockoops *lotuspyschje10:17
lapionalkisg, yes10:18
lotuspsychjeBh_: not that i know off, as devs cant forespell the future of a bug?10:18
alkisglapion: the settings for most programs (panel included) are stored in ~/.config, you can try moving it aside in e.g. .config-bad, and logout/login again10:18
alkisglapion: there's also gnome-panel --reset, which resets settings10:18
jk^lotuspsychje how to do that?10:18
aftrshockI'll be back tomorrow. need to sleep. gonna make it a project for the day10:18
Bh_lotuspsychje: well that y the E exist at ETA, nothing solid. but kewl I got it, thanks for helping me out :)10:18

alkisgHm, well, properly removing .config should fix issues with the current user, unless you tried it while you were already logged in so the files go written/flushed just before logout10:21
lapionalkisg, upgrade from 14.0410:22
alkisgTry logout, login from vt1 (alt+ctrl+F1) and removing from there10:22
lapionalkisg, to prevent file flushing problems I logout and do all removing from vc110:23

alkisglapion: it doesn't use gnome-panel, so sure11:24
alkisgjk^: so you had a xubuntu system, and you clicked with the mouse, and it stopped working?11:25
lotuspsychjealkisg: <jk^> Yes lotuspsychje i unistalled the app "Schermo" its translation from italian might be "Monitor/Display"11:25

lapionalkisg, somehow somewhere outside of the regular gnome-panel config folders and files there is another folder and or file in which there are gnome-panel config settings that is not traceable whatsoever..11:26

lapionlogging in with a new user there where no problems.11:27
alkisglapion: that doesn't sound likely. There's .local, but it doesn't store gnome-panel settings. Are you sure it works in new users?11:27
alkisglapion: you could also start with mv /home/lapion /home/lapion.old; mkdir /home/lapion; chown; login; and then move files back11:27
jk^lotuspsychje yes i found solution like that on the web but i don't know how to do that11:28
alkisglotuspsychje: let's see what he uninstalled first11:28
lapionalkisg, I even logged in with an empty folder to move all the old folders back ( without overwriting ) upon relogin same problem11:28
lotuspsychjejk^: enter the command from alkisg11:28
jk^Ok but how to go to terminal?11:28
alkisglapion: at that point, you do "binary search", you start with all the folders without dot in front, which shouldn't matter, then you also bring back a few of the dot folders files, then the rest, until you discover which dot folder/file causes the issue11:29
alkisgjk^: reboot in recovery mode, select "enable networking", and then "root shell":11:29
alkisgAnd run the command from there11:29
lapionmore then 120 .folders11:30

allenlongsays unable to fetch some archives, mayube run apt-get update or try with  fix missing22:06
tatertotsallenlong: let me know when done22:06
tatertotsallenlong: are you done?22:07
_KaszpiR_and here comes yum... ;)22:07
_KaszpiR_sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install -y inxi pastebinit22:07
allenlongeye eye22:07
tatertotsallenlong: inxi -Fxxprzc0|pastebinit22:08
tatertotsallenlong: share url/link here...if you do not get a url/link.....say so22:08
tatertotsallenlong: if you do not get a url/link...say so22:09
allenlongsame message, unable to fetch some archives maybe run get  update or try with fix missing22:10
tatertotsallenlong: yeah you might fix that first then talk to me after you successfully fix that22:10
allenlongus.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/i/inxi22:11
tatertotsallenlong: did you attempt to follow through on the "hint" that was provided to you while using the computer terminal?22:14
allenlongto do same command with fix missing?22:15
tatertots16:06:37 <allenlong> says unable to fetch some archives, mayube run apt-get update or try with  fix missing22:15
tatertotsallenlong: sudo apt-get update22:16
tatertotsallenlong: did you try that?22:16
tatertotsallenlong: "maybe" is too subtle22:16
tatertotsallenlong: i would have said something like....22:16
oerheksyou *need* wired networking to fix wireless22:16
allenlongi put: sudo apt-fix missing -y inxi pastebinit22:16
allenlongand it said command not found22:17
oerheksapt-fix ?22:17
allenlongyes, i just replaced that in the command from the hint it game22:18
allenlonggave22:18
oerheksapt install -f would do that, but i think you have no networking at all?22:19
adw1nIs there a way to get ubuntu ISO checksums over https?22:19
allenlonglemme try that22:20
allenlongsays0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 18 not upgraded22:21
Bashing-omadw1n: This : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes ?22:21
adw1nBashing-om: this redirects me to http://releases.ubuntu.com/16.04/SHA256SUMS which is served over http22:23
allenlongi just read that, i dont know what im looking for iso files for? but22:24
allenlongi just typed this command22:24
allenlongsudo apt upgrade -y inxi pastebinit upgrade22:24
allenlongand is said built dependency tree and said E: unable to locate package upgrade22:25
Bashing-omallenlong: The terminal is your friend, but you have to learn to get along with it :)  sudo apt upgrade -y is the command that is going to operate on each - inxi pastebinit upgrade in turn - and "upgrade" is not a package :) .22:29
tatertotsallenlong: and if or when any of that makes sense, just let me know when done22:30
allenlongso what does the inxi pastebinit represent or mean22:31
tatertotsdoes that mean you're done?22:31
allenlongi do have the icons network, and network connection on the taskbar22:32
allenlongno, not done22:32
tatertotsoh okay22:32
tatertotsi just wanted to get you to admit that outloud to yourself22:32
allenlongone icon is network status monitor22:32
Marquelhappy new year and a good morning, guys.22:34
allenlongi set this up a few weeks ago, and i remember getting frustrated, cuz i had ubuntu 16.04 before i installed lubuntu 17.1022:34
tatertotsallenlong: did you have the same "symptom(s)" when booted to livecd/liveusb? yes or no22:35
Marqueli do have a little problem with a BCM4312 b/g LP-PHY (pretty dated) wifi chip: i can't get it to work with my WPA2-EAP wifi network. wpa_supplicant fails with "invalid key management type" and that's about it. dmesg says it's managed by wl module, i don't know if that's correct or if there's something missing from the system. any help is appreciated.22:35
allenlongno, the ubuntu was hardly working, would freeze up all the time, crash, etc, but it did have wireless network built in22:36
tatertotslogically the honest answer is either "i don't know because i didn't try" or "yes"22:36
allenlongno, i had no prob connecting to my wifi, could see all available networks, etc22:36
tatertotsso something the system administrator did "post" installation may have impacted wifi ?22:37
tatertotsare you saying that's at minimum a "possibility"?22:38
allenlongyes, im sure it could have, but they r completely different distros22:38
jk^which is the command to install seahorse ?22:39
tatertotsif wifi worked when booted to livecd/liveusb, but "post" installation "no wifi" ..i'd be interested in what evil the system administrator has been doing to that poor computer22:39
tatertotsit may need to be cleansed in the waters of lake minnetonka22:41
allenlongsudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucis-generic22:42
allenlongi found this on one of the forums, it seems this is a common issue with this distro22:42
tatertotsso that means it's working now? yes or no22:43
tatertotsno right>22:43
tatertots?22:43
jk^pls22:43
jk^i'm on xubuntu 16.04.3, which is the command to install seahorse?22:44
Bashing-om!info seahorse xenial22:44
ubottuseahorse (source: seahorse): GNOME front end for GnuPG. In component main, is optional. Version 3.18.0-2ubuntu1 (xenial), package size 414 kB, installed size 2116 kB22:44
Bashing-omjk^: ' sudo apt update ; sudo apt upgrade ; sudo apt install seahorse ' .22:44
allenlongso i entered iwconfig and it says no wireless extensions22:45
jk^ok22:45
tatertotsinteresting that according to your own testimony...wireless works when booted to livecd/liveusb22:45
jk^after it asks me password, but it doesn't let me enter it22:45
jk^Bashing-om,22:46
allenlonghow can i remedy the no wireless extensions22:46
JakethepythonHello room, is there a way to reinstall Ubuntu or restore it to the generic settings of when it was first installed w/ out reinstalling22:47
Ben64no22:48
allenlongsudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucis-generic22:48
Jakethepythonok22:48
allenlongim gonna put this in, says its for wireless drivers22:48
allenlongsays unable to locate package22:48
Jakethepythonmy DNS and everything is screwed up not allowing me to do OPEN vpn,22:49
Ben64allenlong: don't just keep doing random things you find online22:49
tatertotsallenlong: you're not having much luck getting "packages" installed from the "internet"22:49
allenlongsudo lshw -C network22:50
allenlongjust did this!22:50
Ben64ok, pastebin the result22:50
Bashing-omjk^: Security measuere, there is no response to the screen when password is entered, enter the pass word blindly and hit the enter key .22:50
ApachezHappy New Year everybody!22:51
tatertotsJakethepython: are you planning on attempting to fix your DNS network issue? or are you going to call your ISP and have them figure it out?22:51
allenlongsays ethernet interfae and has info then down further dsay network disable=d wireless interface22:51
Ben64allenlong: pastebin the result22:51
allenlongim on my desktop, gimme sec22:51
allenlongi cant figure out how to put it here, this is my desktop, its on a laptop22:54
Ben64go to paste.ubuntu.com and paste it there22:54
Ben64then give the link here22:55
tatertotsallenlong: ever thought to "temporarily" "hardwire" the laptop22:55
allenlongbut it says network disabled wireless interface22:55
allenlongok, lemme get ethernet cabnle22:55
tatertotsallenlong: you could even use that "cord" from your desktop22:55
=== xMopxShell is now known as xMopx
tatertotsallenlong: then once you have successfully "hardwired" the computer to the network to address the wireless issue...22:58
JakethepythonI don't know what the DNS issue is..because i was trying to do a local VPN to test the server settings not via the ISP and it was giving the same error so i think its more of a NIC issue on the server w/ its settings22:58
tatertotsallenlong: sudo apt install inxi pastebinit22:58
tatertotsallenlong: you'll need to confirm with "yes" after entering your password and pressing enter23:00
addercheers everyone, all the best.23:00
eel_Happy New Year!23:01
tatertotsJakethepython: so your "DNS issue" isn't a DNS issue after all now on second though, I guess you needed to "deliberate"23:01
tatertotsJakethepython: are you %100 certain it's even a NIC issue?23:02
JakethepythonNo , I guess im too windows centric still and just thought a clean install of the OS would help me to then install just the packages I needed and to be able to tell if it was a hardware NIC issue or if something else is conflicting23:04
jk^Bashing-om,23:04
jk^i installed it23:04
jk^but now i can't find it in the menu23:04
jk^i don't know its italian name23:04
jk^it hasn't been installed with english name seahorse23:05
tatertotsJakethepython: you want or expect "packages" to perform the duties of "network administration or engineering"?23:06
Bashing-omjk^: do in termijal ' apt list seahorse ' amd pastebin that result please .23:08
jk^Elencazione... Fatto23:10
jk^seahorse/xenial,now 3.18.0-2ubuntu1 i386 [installato]23:10
jk^user@user-HP-Compaq-nx6110-PT601ET-ABZ:~$23:10
JakethepythonNo23:12
Bashing-omjk^: That says that seahorse is installed :)23:12
jk^yes23:13
jk^i don't find it in the menus23:13
jk^maybe it has installed with my language name23:13
jk^Bashing-om,23:13
Jakethepythonbascially i wanted to go back to 16.04 server before any other packages were installed23:14
Bashing-omjk^: I do not have it installed, best I can tell you is "read the manual" in this instance . do ' man seahorse ' q to quit from the manual .23:14
jk^ok23:14
jk^maybe23:14
jk^password and keys23:15
jk^i delete the default keyring that chromium tells me to create23:15
jk^but when i open again chromium it ask me again to create a keyring :|23:15
jk^bashing just a while, i reboot23:16
jk^Bashing-om, i create the keyring that chromium ask me to create, after i delete it from "Password and keys (seahorse)" but after chromium ask me again to create the keyring when i open chromium :\23:27
analogicalI need to extract a bunch of rar-files is there a program that can do that in Ubuntu?23:27
=== bazhang_ is now known as bazhang
Bashing-omjk^: Sorry, But I do not understand your end goal here . Rephrase your issue .23:28
arktvrvsyea, unrar23:28
analogicalarktvrvs, I'm not familiar with unrar where can I find it?23:29
arktvrvssudo apt-get install unrar23:29
arktvrvsthen you can use whatever gui ubuntu has or you can command line with something like unrar x *.rar23:30
jk^Everytime i open chromium it ask me to create a keyring/keychain23:30
arktvrvsjk, sounds like a chromium issue.23:30
jk^i installed seahorse "Password and keys" to manage the keyring created23:30
jk^so i use this app to delete the keyring created for chromium, but chromium ask me again to create keyring when i open it again23:31
Bashing-omjk^: Stop Prompt for Keyring?23:31
arktvrvsjk, unless there is a way to tell chromium not to use a keyring, you have to stop deleting it23:31
Bashing-omClose Chrome. Open the file manager, press ctrl+H or show hidden files from menu, go to .local/share/keyrings, move the content to some backup place. Then logout and log back in. Open Chrome, there will be a pop up asking you to set a keyring password, leave it blank, confirm, then it shouldn't bother you anymore. If everything works, you can delete the backup you saved earlier.23:31
VystyI'm setting up a VPN on my system. I'm using HideMyAss VPN, and everything appears to working properly, except that my IP address isn't changing when I check it. I've read around on the internet a bit and it looks like it might be a DNS leak. How do I plug the leak?23:32
Vysty(Assuming that's the problem.)23:32
arktvrvsvysty, your ip wont 'change' you'll just get an extra one.  you have to configure your system to use the vpn as your default connection23:33
Vystyarktvrvs: I phrased it wrong. Yes, I've gained an extra IP and my system is telling me that I've connected successfully.23:33
VystyHowever, when I go to whatismyipaddress.com, it's still pointing to my actual address.23:33
arktvrvsthen go into your network manager and tell it to use the vpn connection instead of your ethernet or wifi23:34
jk^ok thanks Bashing-om23:35
Bashing-omjk^: My hope is that is the result you seek .23:35
Vystyarktvrvs: Let's see here... how do I do that?23:36
VystyI'm int he Network settings right now.23:36
