valorieif it seems frozen or something I try right-clicking the icon in the taskbar and quitting there00:01
valorieas I recall there is a kquitapp command too, but I've not tried that often enough to advise about it00:01
valorieand presumably that would only work for KDE applications, not firefox or so00:02

botchHello...I don't suppose I could get a little assistance could I?01:34
DarinMillerbotch: I might be able to help.  Sup?01:36
botchWell, I came across one of those "Your computer is locked down" "Zues" virus pages.  It was in a Firefox page.  I cleared the history and cache, is there any threat on my Kubuntu 16.04 left?01:38
botchWell, the page was from Revcontent advertisement links01:38
DarinMillerbotch: most of the web threats are just scare ware attemting to provoke you to call or download their ransom ware.01:41
DarinMillerIf other websites behave normally, then I would not be concerned.   If could download viruskiller from teh repos or check some other virus programs such those listed here: https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/free-linux-antivirus-programs/01:44
botchNormal web browsing is okay with no hiccups at the moment so I suppose I"m fine.  I'll look into possibly downloading an antivirus app from that page01:59
botchIf anything gets out of sorts, I'll just to a fresh install.  (I've got everything backed up on 2 portable harddrives)02:00
botchthank you for the link :)02:01
keyvinWhat should you do if you can't build a source package? File a bug against the package?02:24

RYDeNPFkubuntu or kde neon?09:31
RYDeNPFand why...09:31

=== RYDeNPF is now known as RYDeN
RYDeNthanks lord....09:34

RYDeNanother question...09:36
RYDeNsometimes, the dashboar application does not open...09:37
RYDeNI click it and nothing happens09:37
lordievaderI have Neon on my test machine. But haven't used it in a while. (I'm not really the person to ask that question, rarely run Kubuntu-esque things these days)09:37
RYDeNwhat can I do?09:37

RYDeN‎[06:42] ‎<‎lordievader‎>‎ Do you have backports enabled? ----- Do you recommend it?09:46
acheronukbackports give you newer things, but we haven't usually been able to test them as thoroughly as the main packages. usually pretty stable though09:53
RYDeNthanks for your help!09:54

BluesKajobert, ethernet or wifi ?13:16
obertBluesKaj: wifi13:18
BluesKajobert, some wifi drivers need to be downloaded from the internet like some broadcom/BCM drivers , so you need an temporary ethernet connection to do so.13:20
obertit stopped working this mornning13:20
BluesKajwhich wifi chip/13:20
hateballobert: if you've recently had a kernel update there might be a regression, or dkms modules might not have been built13:21

hateballobert: so you could try rebooting and picking an older kernel in grub menu13:21
oberthateball: I am a newbie on kubuntu I won't to touch grub13:21
Borw3Guys, whats benefit of Kubuntu over KDE neon?13:22
Borw3Will I be able to upgrade to Kubuntu 18.04 from 16.04 without fresh install?13:24
BluesKajBorw3, stability13:24
acheronukBorw3: yes, the aim is to support such upgrades13:25
Borw3I am asking cause from 14.04 to 16.04 I heard you could only do fresh installs.13:25
BluesKajBorw3, that was due to the change in plasma versions on 16.0413:27
acheronukthat was a plasma5/KDE4 ->  plasma5/KF5 upgrade, where the configs for some people were not seemingly compatible13:27
acheronukthis LTS -> LTS upgrade should not have that problem13:28

obertI don't know13:40
Borw3By, the way , Riddel is back in Kubuntu team?13:42
BluesKajBorw3, I've seen him in the devel chat a few times lately, but hes not as active as he once was13:46
Borw3In Kubuntu website it says, he is a treasurer now... Is it current?13:47
BluesKajdon't think so13:47
acheronukYes, he never left that role13:48
BluesKajok13:48
acheronukbut that is more or less the only active capacity he has13:48
Borw3LOL, Does Kubuntu steal ideas from KDE neon?13:50
BluesKajwho knows ... does it matter? :-)13:52
Borw3Just curious13:55
lordievaderDon't they both just package KDE software?13:57
BluesKajBorw3, there's probly a back and forth of ideas between them, simce Riddel is active on both afaik13:57
BluesKajsince13:58
BluesKajerr Riddell13:59
Borw3Will upgrading to kde 5.8.8 in Kubuntu LTS mess up future upgrades to 18.04?14:00
BluesKajplasma should upgrade smoothly ubless you're running a non-default kernel14:02
BluesKajunless14:02
Borw3BluesKaj: By the way, you using KDE neon or Kubuntu?14:08

BluesKajKubuntu Artful here14:10

BluesKajBorw3, ^14:11
Borw3Bionic chews more RAM compared to 16.04?14:12
BluesKajdunno. it's not particularly memory heavy14:13
Borw3How much it uses on boot?14:13
BluesKajnever checked14:15
BluesKajthe fans are quiet when it boots :-)14:17
R13oseThere is a sound coming from my touchpad on my laptop.  How do I stop this?15:44
R13oseI know I talked about this before but there should be a way non hardware wise15:46
EvI tried to upgrade to kubuntu14.04 overnight the other day. In the morning I had a message recommending I click to get rid of redundancies, and it will take about 4 hours. So, I used the computer all day with the plan to let get rid of the redundancies last night. Just before I could do this, my computer froze while in Facebook.  I tried closing ap15:57
Evps and escaping...finally getting a message to restart.  It froze at the screen that shows "kubuntu". I waited at least 10 minutes, and restarted holding down shift. I tried booting in recovery. Didn't work so I tried booting last version. Stuck at old gear-symbol screen. What should I do?15:57
BluesKajEv, tried to upgrade to 14.04 from ?16:00
EvI think something really old like 3.2.0 with KDE 4.8.516:01
EvLinux 3.2.016:02
BluesKajwhich kubuntu OS , was it 13.10?16:02
BluesKajor 12.04 LTS16:02
Evidk16:02
EvOS version Linux 3.2.0-101-generic16:03
BluesKajthat's the kernel16:04
EvShould I try to reboot and see what happens? Perhaps holding down shift again?16:05
BluesKajtry ctl+alt+F2 login then do, lsb_release -a16:05
BluesKajlooks like 12.04, which is end of life16:10
BluesKaj!eol16:10
ubottuEnd-Of-Life is the time when security updates and support for an Ubuntu release stop, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases for more information. Looking to upgrade from an EOL release? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades16:10
BluesKajEv, ^16:11
EvTroubles logging in.  Asking for cashe data failed. Assuming drive cache: write through.16:12
BluesKajhope you have your data backed up, because it looks like you need to do a clean install, and I recommend you install 16.04 which is more up to date than 14.0416:16
EvUnfortunately it is not all backed up16:17
EvI pressed restart and entered GRUB again. I'll try cleaning /tmp.16:21
EvIs there any danger to remounting "/ filesystem in read/write mode" and mounting "any other filesystem defined in/etc/fstab"?16:26
BluesKaji doubt it16:41
BluesKajthere's also nomodeset which might work16:42
BluesKaj!nomodeset16:42
ubottuA common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter16:42
