[13:17] yup, that's about the same here, only 50F here, but 10F tomorrow [13:20] burrr... [13:31] 10F is quite normal for Northern Ontario [13:32] :) [17:17] good evening to all [17:20] evening, lotuspsychje [17:20] hey ducasse [17:22] https://itsfoss.com/barcelona-open-source/ [17:23] Hey lotuspsychje, ducasse [17:23] hey BluesKaj all good? [17:23] \o BluesKaj [17:23] yup, fine hare and you, lotuspsychje [17:23] finished work, now lil irc chill :p [17:24] * BluesKaj nods :-) [17:26] 2 new factoids [17:26] !nopti [17:26] KPTI is a mitigation for the !Meltdown security issue. With some workloads on some processors, KPTI has a significant performance impact. KPTI can be disabled by adding "nopti" to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line in /etc/default/grub. This should only be done if absolutely necessary because it will disable protections against Meltdown and thus allow any malicious user process to read memory and probably escalate to root. [17:26] !lenovobug [17:26] Current Ubuntu 17.10 ISOs contain a bug that makes firmware memory read-only. https://pad.lv/1734147 contains more information and fixes for users affected by this issue. The kernel in the 17.10 repositories has been updated and will not trigger this bug, so upgrading is now safe. Ubuntu 17.10 ISOs will be re-released on January 11th with updated, safe, packages. [17:27] yup, the kernel came down the pipe yesterday [17:28] the kernel fixes the nopti grubline right? [17:34] lotuspsychje: 'fixes'? [17:34] nacc: i mean the nopti line in grub, do you have to add it even after the new kernel updates or not? [17:35] lotuspsychje: welll "have to add" is dependent upon the context of the faq [17:35] lotuspsychje: you never "have to add" it [17:35] lotuspsychje: you can choose to add it, and it onlly makes sense on kernels where KPTI exists [17:35] right [17:35] lotuspsychje: if you choose to do so, you're vulnerable [17:36] lotuspsychje: so i'm not sure what your actual question is :) [17:36] lotuspsychje, I've rebooted with grub twice today, no probs [17:36] nacc: my question is, why has this trigger been added, what you reccomend users [17:37] lotuspsychje: well, the faq says [17:37] lotuspsychje: kpti has a perf. impact [17:37] lotuspsychje: some customers may not care about security [17:37] s/customers/users/ [17:37] e.g., on firewalled systems that have no network [17:38] but they may care about perf. [17:38] (e.g., HPC clusters doing non-networked calculations) [17:38] ah i see [17:38] (that's just a thought, not something i know for sure) [18:39] !info harmony bionic [18:39] Package harmony does not exist in bionic [18:41] try concordance [18:41] lotuspsychje,^ [18:43] !info concordance [18:43] concordance (source: concordance): configuration tool for Harmony remotes.
