drleviathanI just reverted to xubuntu-16.04 today, and was setting up the system.  I needed a more recent version of cmake so I downloaded the code and started building it and I noticed a very strange behavior that I've never seen before:01:01
drleviathanthe 'configure' stage of the build is going vveerryy sslloowwllyy01:01
drleviathanif I kill it and start again it moves along at its normal fast clip and then reaches where it left off and ggeettss rreeaallyy sslooww aaggaaiin01:02
drleviathanhas anyone here seen that before?  know what's up?01:02
lamduhIs there a good way to get window snapping?01:41
drleviathanyou have window snapping already, but in a "bad" way?  or you have no window snapping at all?01:45
lamduhWell I like on windows when you can press super+left and you get your window to take up the left half of the screen.01:47
drleviathanI haven't encountered such a configuration before, but then I don't use most of the available window manipulation hot keys.01:49
drleviathanPerhaps someone else here knows more.01:50
AndrioYou can do that here too.01:54
AndrioThe default hotkey isn't Super+Left; I changed it to that.01:55
lamduhAh really Andrio thanks. I will check that out. Wish it was easier to find the configuration option though.03:12
AndrioIt should be in the Whisker menu, under 'Window manager settings' or something like that03:12
lamduhthanks...yeah I think I find it with "tile window to the right". I changed the hotkey but doesn't seem to be working. maybe need to logout and in?03:14
AndrioYou shouldn't need to.03:14
AndrioIs the hotkey you chose used for anything els?03:14
Andrioe03:14
lamduhwell I think super is used to open the menu or whatever03:15
lamduhbut super+right doesnt do anything03:15

Guest96855Hello I had a few questions06:42
Guest96855Will my problems with Xubuntu be solved by Ubuntu forums?06:43
xubuntu31dHEy07:39
xubuntu31dI wish to transfer to Xubuntu. I don't have an external hard disk. I'm able to read my files on my Windows installation from the file manager. Any way I can transfer them and install Xubuntu for good/07:40
simpledatHi11:31
simpledatThis kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU: pae11:31
simpledatUnable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.11:32
simpledatHow do I fix this?11:32
EoflaOEsimpledat What is your CPU first, and check if it supports pae.11:32
simpledatEoflaOE: I use virtualbox11:32
EoflaOEsimpledat Check the settings, you might have missed "PAE/NX support" checkbox.11:33
simpledatEoflaOE: Ok thanks11:33
simpledat:)11:33
EoflaOEYou are welcome11:33
simpledatShould I check "Download updates while installing Xubuntu"?11:35
EoflaOEsimpledat Your choice.11:35
simpledatDo I have to "Encrypt my home folder" IF I already select LVM encryption?11:39
simpledator does LVM encryption include home folder too?11:39
EoflaOEyes, you have to select "Encrypt my home folder"11:40
simpledatSo the LVM encryption does not include home folder?11:40
simpledatLVM encryption should be the whole partition, no?11:40
EoflaOEit encrypts the disk, it should include home11:40
simpledatSo why then encrypt home folder too/again?11:41
EoflaOEthat was my mistake saying that. uncheck the "encrypt home folder"11:41
flocculantsimpledat: re LVM, if you are not using a US keyboard and your password for lvm includes something other than letters or numbers it is likely the password will not match when rebooting. If so - set language and keyboard prior to installing11:41
flocculantbug 104738411:44
ubottubug 1047384 in ubiquity (Ubuntu Bionic) "System Encryption Password set before setting keyboard locale" [Critical,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/104738411:44
flocculantalso if you don't tick the ENcrypt home folder then afaik it doesn't encrypt it11:54
simpledatflocculant: So the LVM encryption does not include the whole disk?11:54
flocculantnot /home/user afaik11:55
flocculantdon't ask me why ...11:55
flocculantiirc correctly users password does the unlocking of their /home11:56
simpledatflocculant: Are you sure about /home/user?12:00
simpledatAnyone that can confirm this?12:01
flocculantask in #ubuntu12:01
flocculantI looked on askubuntu etc12:02
flocculantsimpledat: apart from anything else - if it didn't need to be encrypted seperately then why the box to tick to encrypt it ;)12:03
simpledatflocculant: Maybe something with the partitions. I dont know12:03
flocculantsimpledat: if it was partitions it would be earlier, when you reach the user section of installer (where encrypt home is) the partitions are set up and in fact the installation is already started12:05
simpledatflocculant: Because you can select "Something else" and create or resize partitions yourself12:05
flocculantI know - I test installs pretty much daily as part of xubuntu qa12:05
flocculantsadly I could tell you what is on each section of the installer without looking ...12:06
simpledatflocculant: How can you check if your /home/user is encrypted?12:12
flocculantsimpledat: I'm in the middle of trying to test it :)12:12
simpledatflocculant: Somebody told me this: "FDE is for power-off protection, home directory12:15
simpledat             encryption is for power-on but user-logged-off protection12:15
flocculantthat makes sense12:16
flocculantsimpledat: ok - so I installed with standard encryption - I also asked it to encrypt the home folder, when I boot and login I see this first time dialogue https://i.imgur.com/ZxzSTd1.png12:22
flocculantthis does NOT get shown when you don't encrypt home folder at installation12:22
flocculantalso - when adding a user on a system with home folder encryption there is an option to encrypt new users home12:26
simpledatflocculant: What does it mean?12:26
flocculantthat if you don't tick the Encrypt Home folder on installation then it isn't12:27
simpledatflocculant: So the Encrypt Home folder is for power-off protection too?12:28
flocculantno12:28
simpledatSorry I dont really get it :)12:28
flocculant:)12:28
flocculantok - I run a non encrypted system here - I also have a couple of test users, if I go to /home I see this https://i.imgur.com/6Bi0uUd.png12:29
flocculantand I can see what is in the other 2 test accounts home folder12:29
flocculanton the test I just did - with encrypted home for thefirst user and a new test user unencrypted I see this https://i.imgur.com/QLRJeQP.png12:30
flocculantnote that the original user there is locked12:30
flocculantI'll do one more test install, but basically it appears that not ticking that box ties up with what you were told elsewhere12:31
simpledatOk.12:31
flocculantsimpledat: ok last one, this /home from an encrypted system without encrypted /home(s) https://i.imgur.com/t41B2lM.png12:45
flocculantas you can see neither are now locked12:45
simpledatmhm12:45
flocculanthope that helps :)12:45
simpledatThanks12:45
flocculantno problem12:46
simpledatDo you know how to login as root in terminal?12:46
simpledatsu then type my password doesnt work?12:46
flocculantroot is locked12:46
simpledatOh why?12:46
flocculantI tend to sudo -i12:46
simpledatOk12:46
flocculantnot getting into that discussion - check the interwebs for ubuntu and root :)12:47
flocculantbeen hashed over for years12:47
simpledatflocculant: Thank you12:47
* flocculant is off to do some bionic testing now12:47
flocculantsimpledat: you're welcome :)12:47
simpledat:)12:47
aenderboyhi, is it possible, that xubuntu is one of the few distros which don't use video hardware acceleration? Besides centOS+xfce i couldn't find any desktop which runs as smoothly as xubuntu in my vm's out of the box.12:58
flux242xfce doesn't have a decent compositor based on opengl. Maybe this the reason13:02
flux242as long as everybody are switching to the wayland compositors, xfce devs are planning to inplement their x.org compositor in opnegl sic! They are 10 years late with this task13:04
aenderboyso xfce doesn't use proper opengl for window rendering which makes it more performant on my vm's ?13:05
flux242could be. It doesn't interfere with the graphics hw on your system13:08
aenderboybut this ^ has nothing to do with upgrading from gtk2 to gtk3? because people often blame gtk3 for lags.13:13
simpledatA critical error has occurred while running the virtual machine and the machine execution has been stopped.13:29
simpledatWhat is this about?13:29
cfhowlettplease don't crosspost.  choose a channel13:29
simpledatShould I install updates with apt-get upgrade or the Software Updater?14:02
cfhowlettno difference in result. your choice, simpledat14:03
simpledatcfhowlett: Because I did first upgrade with apt-get, then after reboot Software Updater ask me to upgrade. And then I got this error14:04
simpledatA critical error has occurred while running the virtual machine and the machine execution has been stopped.14:04
cfhowlettthat's a vm machine error. are your running virtualbox or vmware14:04
simpledatvirtualbox14:04
cfhowlettyour error is on the virtualbox side on your host machine, not in ubuntu14:05
simpledatBut I didnt get this error until I did this 2 upgrades (with apt-get and Software Updater)14:05
cfhowlettupdate vbox14:05
simpledatcfhowlett: It should be the latest version14:05
cfhowlett... "should be"14:05
simpledat5.2.614:06
cfhowlettfwiw: I also get an error my new installed 16.04 with vbox.  ubuntu runs normally14:07
simpledatAnd I facing this error after I did the upgrade14:07
simpledatcfhowlett: Do you know what it could be or how to fix it?14:08
cfhowlettbut ubuntu runs, right?14:08
cfhowlettNo.  I ignore it.14:08
simpledatcfhowlett: I closed the windows and xubuntu shutdown14:09
simpledatwindow14:09
simpledatWell xubuntu cant run because of that error message, right?14:09
cfhowlettmine runs just fine.  doesn't yours?14:10
simpledatcfhowlett: So you mean that I should click on the ignore it buttom?14:11
cfhowlettworks for me14:11
simpledatBut you dont know why I getting this message?14:11
cfhowlettas I said - something on the host machine side.  you could make a fresh machine and install again14:12
simpledatcfhowlett: Host machine side? Are you relating to virtualbox?14:13
cfhowlettyes14:13
simpledatcfhowlett: Do you know why I had to upgrade with Software Updater as I already upgraded with apt-get?14:17
cfhowlettI never use either as the command line gives more precise control.  for full update you need to do sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade          that will grab *all* the update packages in cue14:19
simpledatcfhowlett: So apt-get upgrade and Software Updater should not give the same upgrades?14:20
cfhowlettapt upgrade will NOT update all packages14:20
md84hi, i'm trying to disable font ligatures in xubuntu. i tried the solution from https://superuser.com/questions/678726/how-to-disable-typographic-ligature-when-using-font-hinting-in-xfce14:20
md84but that didn't work. is there some other way to disable ligatures. i do NOT want to disable hinting completely though14:20
md84the font i'm using is Monaco on xubuntu 16.04. application: MousePad. without any customization, the font renders fine (without ligatures) in Emacs and the terminal14:20
md84thanks for any information on how to fix or even to investigate this further.14:20
simpledatcfhowlett: But Software Updaters include all packages?14:20
cfhowlettI don't use it and it would depend on the Updates settings14:22
simpledatcfhowlett: I getting this error by using Software Updater14:23
simpledatI ignore the message but I get black screen14:23
cfhowlettfor more information use the command line14:23
cfhowlettwait, black screen on boot?14:24
simpledatcfhowlett: Do you read my issue here?14:24
simpledatYes14:24
cfhowlettboot to the terminal and run all updates from there.  then reboot normally.14:24
cfhowletterror messages can be read in dmesg14:25
simpledatcfhowlett: I mean the error message from virtualbox14:25
cfhowletttest a new vm or purge / reinstall vox14:26
cfhowlettvbox14:26
simpledatvirtualbox-5.2 is already the newest version (5.2.6-120293~Debian~stretch).14:26
simpledatas I said14:26
simpledatI getting the error from using Software Updater14:27
simpledatafter reboot I see the error message14:27
cfhowlettdont' use Software updater.  use the command line14:27
simpledatI did14:28
cfhowlettalso ask #vbox14:28
simpledatBut after reboot Software Updater ask me to upgrade new packages14:28
cfhowlettwhat does lsb_release-a tell you14:28
simpledatI cant check now because I cant boot :P14:29
cfhowlettboot the terminal14:30
cfhowlett!recovery14:30
ubottuIf your system fails to boot normally, it may be useful to boot it into recovery mode. For instructions, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RecoveryMode14:30
cfhowlettthen run sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade14:30
cfhowlettthen reboot your host machine and your VM14:30
JoshuaDi'm looking for a videocard for a desktop machine that uses open source drivers and is well supported by linux/ubuntu. Any suggestions?19:06
