CrellHello, peoples. When I installed this 17.10 system a few weeks ago, I set it up with an encrypted hard drive, and otherwise default disk configuration.  It set me up with 16 GB swap. I now want to increase it to 32 GB swap. However, gparted doesn't show me a swap partition. It just shows an EFI partition (0.5 GB), a /boot partition, and an encrypted lvm2 partition.  So, um, how do I add more swap?01:19
valorie!swap02:10
ubottuswap is used to move unused programs and data out of main memory to make your system faster. It can also be used as extra memory if you don't have enough. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq for more info02:10

Crellvalorie: Hm.  So is it 17.10 that uses a swap file rather than partition, or is it because it's an encrypted disk?  (I've always used a dedicated swap partition in the past, but haven't encrypted the disk before.)03:48
valorieCrell: that I do not know, but ubuntu as a whole has gone to swapfile03:49
valorieyou should be able to use a partition if you want, right?03:49
valorieI didn't re-read the faq in the above link03:50
CrellPresumably; unless doing a resize on an encrypted file system will cause issues(tm).03:50
CrellBut if I can just resize an existing swap file that should be adequate as well.  (I don't much care which it is as long as it works.)03:50
valoriethe folks who wrote that faq know about such stuff and I do not03:53
valoriepeople in #ubuntu might know more, as well03:53
valoriewe sort of specialize in the kubuntu only questions here03:53
* Crell nods.03:53
CrellI've been using Kubuntu for years. I find I have about 50/50 odds between #ubuntu and #kubuntu in getting a question answered. :-)03:54
valoriewell, we're friendly03:54
valorie:-)03:54
Crell:-)03:54
valoriebut they are a much larger chan03:54
CrellHm, fstab lists /dev/mapper/cryptswap1 as the swap partition.03:55
CrellWhich... I interpret as "you're using an encryped filesystem so we assumed you wanted an encrypted swap too, so we used a swapfile."  Which is logical.03:55
SJrWhen booting kubuntu off a usb stick the USB stick boot process never finshes due to hard disk read errors of my main hard disk. Is there a way to get to a shell quickly. I am trying to recover the data.06:03
SJrI strongly believe the data is readable, I just need to get to a shell and ddrescue it.06:04
=== vedula is now known as vedularaghu
valorieSJr: http://www.system-rescue-cd.org/ is probably a better idea then06:08
valoriemuch less chrooting, etc.06:08
valorieplus: much smaller, thus faster to boot06:08
=== vedularaghu_ is now known as vedularaghu
SJrYeah I already had a Kubuntu 17.04 USB stick06:18
SJrand it eventually booted06:18
SJrbut I just tried updating using apt-get and it refused.06:18
SJrBecause they are unauthenticated repos.06:18
SJrWhy does the live cd refuse to update packages that seems broken.06:19
valorieSJr: what version are you trying to boot?06:19
SJr17.0406:19
valorie!eol06:19
ubottuEnd-Of-Life is the time when security updates and support for an Ubuntu release stop, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases for more information. Looking to upgrade from an EOL release? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades06:19
valorie17.10 is the current release06:19
SJroh right06:20
valorieoh, now I see you said that, duh06:20
valoriesorry06:20
valorieyou should still be able to get to a shell in the usual way06:20
valoriedunno if you have to chroot in or can run ddrescue as is06:21
valorie!ddrescue06:21
SJrYeah I did, and then I tried to install ddrescue and apt refused to install anything.06:21
SJrBut I guess that's beacuse it's EOL.06:21
SJrSo that's fine06:21
valorieoh, it's not there06:21
valoriedd will be06:21
SJrYeah it's called gddrescue or dd_rescue.06:21
valorieright06:21
SJrbut I'm going to download 17.10 and try again tomorrow.06:22
valorieif you already have the ISO on disk, you could just zsync or rsync it06:22
valoriejust get the changes06:22
valorieunless you have a fast connection, in which case that is the simplest, yeah06:23
valoriethis discusses how to zsync in the commandline: http://linuxgrandma.blogspot.com/2018/01/seeding-new-isos-easy-zsync-way.html06:24
SJrI'm just going to bed anyway06:28
SJrthanks06:28

anzcan somebody help me out here07:16
anzlittle strange thing with my kubuntu 171007:17
anzI have bluetooth earphones connected to my laptop07:17
valorieyes?07:17
anzI can see them and they are working07:17
anzI can hear sound from there07:17
anzI put them as a default output07:17
anznow I want to listen to the music from youtube07:18
anzand as soon I hit play on youtube07:18
anzdefault output is turned to laptops internal speakers07:18
valoriewhat did you use to route the sound to them, anz?07:18
valorieyou probably have to use pulseaudio07:19
anz:)07:19
anzwell I didint use anything specifically07:19
valoriewhich I think is pa-something07:19
anzI thoudht that if I set those earphones as default07:19
valoriepasystray07:19
valorieone would think07:19
valoriebut for some reason, pulseaudio doesn't think you mean it unless you specifically set it there07:20
hateballanz: if you click the volume applet while stuff is playing you should be able to see which output it uses, and also change it07:20
valorie:(07:20
valoriehateball: you should indeed07:20
anzyes and from there I see that it uses internal speakers07:20
valorieonly on my bluetooth earbuds (the week they worked) -- no worky07:20
valorieexcept with pasystray07:21
valorieI should have filed a bug07:21
valoriebut against what07:21
valorieand then they stopped working anyway07:21
valorieso pfff07:21
anzok from pa-something I could change the output07:21

anzcorrect me if i'm wrong07:23
anzbut if you have a working application wich uses some output07:24
anzthen from systray07:24
anzyou can not change output device?07:24
valorieanz: this is the only time I've had to use the pasystray07:26

lordievaderHey valorie07:35
lordievaderHow are you doing?07:36
valoriegood07:36
valoriedid you make it to fossdem?07:36
valorieyou go usually, no?07:37
lordievaderNot just that, I gave a talk. It was pretty nice :D07:37
valorieoooooo07:37
valorieimpressive!07:37
valoriewhat was your talk?07:37
lordievaderYes, we have been going for the last 4 years or so.07:37
lordievaderhttps://fosdem.org/2018/schedule/event/dns_melting_the_snow/07:37
lordievaderVideo is already on that page it seems.07:38
lordievaderThey are really quick this year with the videos 😁07:38
valorievery nice!07:38
valorieKDE had a table this year07:39
valoriedid you happen by?07:39
lordievaderErr, not really. Passed by a couple of times, but didn't really stop and chat. It was quite small compared to other times.07:40
valorieyes, they feel sort of edged out07:42
valorieas if the fossdem organizers think "desktop is a solved problem" and that KDE=desktop07:42
valorieboth of which are sort of not true07:42
valoriewell, def. not true07:43
lordievaderFedora was still quite large07:43
valoriebut the organizers are the ones doing the work after all07:43
lordievaderDebian was also a bit smaller.07:43
lordievaderGnome was about the same size.07:43
lordievaderI was quite sad when the presenter of a design talk asked: how many of you use {gnome, kde,Mac}. When it turned out there were more Mac users than KDE users.]07:45
valorieyeah07:45
valorieI think a lot of people spent years tinkering now they just want to get on with it07:46
valorieI spend very little time tinkering!07:46
valorieit's really not necessary07:46
valoriebut well Macs have all the ads07:48
valorieyour project sounds fascinating07:54
valorieis there a way someone like the KDE sysadmins could use it or contribute their info?07:54
valorielistening to some music already or I'd listen to your talk now07:54

shanemikel_how has Canonical's disavowal of the desktop, and the Ubuntu GNOME merger effected Kubuntu (in my estimation the best KDE distro avail.)?  will Ubuntu remain the best desktop (with out-of-box UEFI support, automatic setup of home dir encryption, and the only reliable system WRT discrete graphics hardware)?11:00
shanemikel_and what ever happened to NEON?  did they merge with Kubuntu development?11:01
shanemikel_man... if only Canonical would ask I'd be happy to pay a modest fee for a nice hybrid staged/rolling distro (perfect stability compromise IMO) with reliable discrete gfx support and OOB proprietary multimedia support (dvd, mp3, etc.)...11:10
shanemikel_add some lobby influence with nvidia, amd, intel, and some muscle behind Qt and the KDE desktop... I'll pay an annual support/licence fee on the order of MS Office, no problem11:14
shanemikel_So are Kubuntu devs flocking to other base systems, or is Kubuntu (and Ubuntu Desktop) still the obvious mid-term (2-6 year) choice for desktop linux?11:22
hateballshanemikel_: I don't think there's been any kind of exodus11:25
hateballcalico: that's a known bug with certain apps, I think it is fixed in upstream plasma11:25
calicothanks hateball11:26
hateballfor instance Steam had the same thing, but they patched Steam so it now works11:26
hateballI dont know the specifics as to why it prevented clean shutdown in the first place tho11:27

Guest57154does anybody know if we get Plasma 5.12 on 18.04?22:27
acheronukGuest57154: you will, yes22:27
acheronukwhen it's been uploaded22:28
Guest57154and do you know by any chance if the kubuntu ppa will bring 5.12 also to 16.04?22:29
Guest57154and thus also to the last iteration of Linux Mint KDE?22:29
acheronukno, it won't. not for 16.0422:30
Guest57154that's a real pity!22:30
Guest57154thanks for telling me!22:30
acheronukGuest57154: it needs too large a jump in Qt version to backport for us to 16.0422:31
Guest57154oK.22:31
Guest57154you seem well informed. so maybe...22:31
acheronuk?22:32
Guest57154...you can tell me if there are plans...22:32
acheronukthere are many plans22:33
Guest57154to give kde connect the ability to sync kontakts and kalender between android phones and a Plasma desktop.22:33
Guest57154i switched from Win7 to Linux for privacy reasons, but there does not seem to be a program on linux that does local sync like that.22:34
acheronuksadly, I don't know22:34
Guest57154on windows there is a program called myphoneexplorer...22:34
Guest57154but the developer has no interest in porting it...22:34
Guest57154do you know where I could ask that and get an answer?22:35
acheronukin #kde or #kde-devel maybe22:37
acheronukbut it would be pot luck on catching someone who might know22:37
Guest57154i will try that, thanks!22:37
Guest57154i am very new to irc.22:37
Guest57154well, one has to try, right? ;-)22:38
Guest57154else things will nevee happen.22:38
acheronukvery true22:38
Guest57154unfortunately i am not a developer, else I might just try to write that app myself.22:39
Guest57154but actually that seems like a function that should really be a part of KDE connect.22:40
acheronukit would be useful22:41
ronnocGuest57154: You might have a look at kolab (kolabnow.com). It's a paid service, but 100% open source and works on any platform and integrates with Thunderbird, Kontact, Android, etc/ plus has web client. You can also host it yourself for free if desired.23:18
ronnocI use them because they are privacy-focused and open source. Also, they are developing Kube, which they have touted as KMail's successor.23:19
TheFocusMonring.  I'm currently running Kubuntu 16.10 which I think is now EOL.  How do I upgrade to another long term support...  Don't have the time to probellm solve fixes at the moment.23:57
