etyrnalwhat's the general process for finding a driver for a particular chip that will be compatible with the banana pi m3, ubuntu, the kernel, etc?  Say you know the bpi-m3 has a AP6212 wireless chip, how does one go about finding a driver and incorporating it into the kernel etc?02:17
daftykinsdigging up manufacturer datasheets probably02:18
etyrnali haven't received my SBC yet, but while i'm waiting for it to arrive i'm reading up on everything i can find.  What's a good resource for understanding the process02:18
etyrnaldaftykins, thanks.02:18
daftykinsmight get better info in #linux02:18
etyrnaldaftykins, like so?  http://wiki.friendlyarm.com/wiki/images/5/57/AP6212_V1.1_09022014.pdf02:21

XXCoderhey all08:08
ducasse\o08:08
XXCoderI was wondering about ubuntu development08:08
lotuspsychjewhat about it XXCoder08:09
XXCoderisnt ubuntu now use new windowing system not X? (not too sure proper name)08:09
lotuspsychjeXXCoder: recently news is ubuntu 18.04 will use Xorg by default08:09
lotuspsychjebut wayland reccomended/choosable08:10
XXCoderinteresting. wonder what made the change08:10
XXCoder*caused08:10
ducassex11 is very old, and has security issues (among other things)08:11
ducasseit's getting harder to update it to modern use, so they started fresh08:12
XXCoderxscreensaver tries its best on security when lock screen but yeah its bit of a mess08:14
XXCoderI just hope wayland can run all programs as usual08:14
lotuspsychjeXXCoder: wayland has still issues, hence why xorg by default08:16
XXCoderinteresting08:16
ducassethat's not the only security issue. and some things will change with wayland.08:16
ducasseyou can no longer run graphical programs as root, for instance08:17
XXCoderhm why?08:17
ducassesecurity reasons08:17
null00what is the advantage of wayland over Xorg08:20
ducasseit's more modern, hence easier to implement modern features08:20
ducasseapparently. personally, i'm not a fan.08:21
null00do any distros have it be default at this point08:23
ducassemore and more do08:23
lotuspsychjenull00: yes, fedora for example08:23
XXCoderdunno. currently using mint08:23
XXCoderfiguring what distro to use soon, as my videocard driver dont work with newer kernel 4.4 and I cant use newer version08:24
XXCoderkind of unhappy I cannot upgrade, only must do clean install.08:24
lotuspsychjewe reccomend ubuntu :p08:26
XXCodernahhhh ;)08:26
XXCodermay end uop using ubuntu yeah08:27
XXCoderif it can be upgraded rather than fresh install for newer version08:27
null00what are you using now?08:27
XXCoderxfce mint 17.308:27
XXCodermay get xubuntu08:28
lotuspsychjeXXCoder: LTS to LTS ubuntu08:28
lotuspsychjeeach time 5 years support08:28
ducassexubuntu is 3 years, afaik08:28
null00think about xbuntu or lubuntu for an older machine08:28
null00thinking*08:28
XXCoderheh my machine is pretty recent. I just love xubuntu08:29
XXCoder*xfce08:29
null00ya im thinking I like the lighter weight stuff as well, I have manjaro Xfce on an old macbook and really like it08:31
XXCoderI was so happy they finally updated xfce couple years ago08:41
lotuspsychjei did a lot of lubuntu 16.04 testing aswell08:42
lotuspsychjevery nice release of lubuntu08:42
lotuspsychjebest ever in my opinion08:42
XXCodernice08:42
XXCoderI think first linux distro I used regularly was umm 5.0 something ubuntu08:43
lotuspsychje!5.0408:43
ubot5Ubuntu 5.04 (Hoary Hedgehog) was the second release of Ubuntu.  End Of Life: October 31, 2006. See !eol for more details.08:43
lotuspsychjethis?08:43
XXCoderprevious ones was just check how it works, like red hat what 3.0? or something? lol08:43
XXCoderlol yep08:43
XXCoderredhat was in 90s08:44
lotuspsychjeyeah my first was some redhat on gnome08:44
lotuspsychjehad to manual make networking going lol08:44
XXCoder:)08:44
lotuspsychjefor a cable connection lol08:44
XXCoderwhen ubuntu went purple I stopped for while08:45
XXCoderthen got angry with unity08:45
XXCoderI tried that, hated it so much08:45
lotuspsychjei didnt, i got all the way in the ubuntu line08:45
lotuspsychjei like unity myself08:45
XXCoderbrown was pretty unique08:46
XXCoderoh well08:46

lotuspsychjegood evening to all17:22
lotuspsychjetryed skype snap on a xenial box, seemed prerry nice17:29
TJ-hggdh: thanks for dealing with s10gopal :)17:36
hggdhTJ-: I would like to say my pleasure, but it is really not a pleasure17:37
lotuspsychjeyeah he's frustrating, repeating over & over17:38
hggdhWhat he should understand is that people will not go pander to him just because he is having a problem.17:40
hggdhin other words: he has to learn to wait, and has to learn to read what is said to him. apw had already told him what to do17:41
hggdhbut... he had a run-away process in a kernel, so he gave up testing. But run-away processes are NOT the problem being researched17:42
ducassehe wants someone to either do the work for him or hold his hand all the way17:42
hggdhwhich will not happen, and he must understand that17:42
hggdhah well17:43
hggdhI am going to see the world outside my hotel room for a few minutes, and cool off17:43
TJ-Maybe, but at least he's sticking with it ... so many times users's cannot be bothered and drop out before the problem is fixed, which makes the time spent helping them wasted17:43
hggdhhe is stcking with it because otherwise he will not have power in his laptop17:44
TJ-right :)17:44
ducassesure, but he's still a pain in the backside ;)17:44
TJ-I'm still not sure where to point the blame. I'm 50/50 between HP firmware and a kernel regression (in ACPI)17:44
hggdhyes, it might be a real problem, we do not know. But being a pain in the ass makes people more prone NOT to help, and he has to learn this17:54
oerheksMy best bet: that R5 is not supported by amdgpu, so that might be the main issue for the drain, if the bios does not let him disable it.17:59
oerhekslots of linux related posts online with simular HP issues, m430 and others17:59
lotuspsychjelol freaky https://www.deviantart.com/art/Gentoo-Linux-Screenshot-2-Jan-2017-73012019618:19
TJ-weird, got an apache2 userdir ($USER/public_html) where files are listed correctly, all ownership/permissions in the file-system is correct ($USER:$USER, 664) , but Firefox downloads them as 0 bytes files (both local and Android). Apache log shows the GET status 200 (OK) - hate when there's no log to help  :s18:30
oerhekshggdh, i hope i got it right, user-id changed with that root-account rollback19:29
hggdhoerheks: it might. But, frankly, woking with this user is too much...20:33
