BluesKajHowdy folks11:49
lordievaderHey BluesKaj11:51
lordievaderHow are you doing?11:51
BluesKajhi lordievader ok here ,and you?11:58
lordievaderDoing good here ๐Ÿ˜11:58
BluesKajGuys, my son is coming to visit and wants to help me upgrade this old pc. We're gonna install a new Asus mobo and intel i5 cpu, so that means going from BIOS to UEFI. and DOS table to GPT. Any suggestions how to proceed without losing my OSs and data, once the new HW is installed? The /efi/boot partition in particular seems to be a hurdle.12:56
BluesKajmaybe a clean install then migrating the backed up data is the best choice12:59
oerhekshi BluesKaj, yes, i would do a fresh install, done in 15 minutes..13:00
oerheksand a backup is not bad, to have13:00
BluesKajdefinyely oerheks, thanks ...think that's probly the wisest and safest method...a little more work in terms of settings after the install, but worth it in the long run13:02
BluesKajdefinitely13:02
oerhekssure, fresh UEFI mbr, best start for a new machine13:05
oerheksstart with looking for updates for that uefi bios :-)13:06
lordievaderBluesKaj: That is what I would do in that case. Grab a new drive for the new OS. Connect the old one when done with installing.13:06
oerheksa 2nd hdd, that would be awesome ..13:07
oerheksoh boy, CrazyTux spotted in ##linux13:09
lordievaderHis nick speaks the truth?13:10
oerheksjups13:10
BluesKajoerheks, lordievader , yeah already have 2drives on this pc, a ssd and an old WD spinner13:12
BluesKajhehe, the constant search for the ultimate OS continues for poor 'tux13:13
BluesKajand now our friend the the tatertot is involved , this should be interesting :-)13:15
lordievaderThe ultimate OS... well good luck with that.13:15
LtWorfon my laptop i set it to legacy BIOS mode and did everything normal13:15
BluesKajlt tried that and I had problems with disk errors and kernel panic, LtWorf13:16
LtWorfseems my legacy mode was tested and yours wasn't :D13:17
BluesKajon my lenovo laptop13:17
LtWorfhm, i do have a lenovo thinkpad13:17
BluesKajitworked ok for a while then after installing dual boot with W7 the problems started , but they didn't end after removing W7 so i sitched back to uegi and gpt, and now all is well13:19
BluesKajuefi13:19
BluesKajlenovo g500 here13:19
BluesKajlegacy mode and\ backflash bios worked perfectly til W7 got into the mix13:20
JimBunbtuLenovo y500 here (since we are dropping models).13:22
BluesKajlenovo is linux friendly and this tutorial rescued my system nicely https://fitzcarraldoblog.wordpress.com/2017/02/10/partitioning-hard-disk-drives-for-bios-mbr-bios-gpt-and-uefi-gpt-in-linux/13:30
LtWorfi'm installing a fedora VM for workโ€ฆ their partitioning UI is so bad that it must have been designed by professionals of bad design13:44
LtWorfit's not just bad by chance13:44
BluesKajfedora is ok but the attention to media apps was poor13:48
LtWorfehm, aren't they the same media programs that are on other distributions?13:54

lotuspsychjeoh no run!16:15
naccoerheks: sigh16:16
oerheks:-D16:16
naccrobeph: s10gopal has been around for a bit now16:38
naccas far as asking questinos that are totally random16:39
oerhekshe never looked for an bios update, for his amd R5 issue ..16:39
naccyeah16:39
lotuspsychjewhat has eclipse todo with battery drain omg16:39
oerheksso i wonder, why does 14.04 not drain ...16:39
nacclotuspsychje: kernel bug16:39
naccpossibly16:39
robephlotuspsychje: I think it's the ubuntu versin16:39
naccor firmware issue on their machine16:39
oerheksHP bug only16:39
nacci forget precisely16:39
naccthey filed an upstrema bug16:39
naccand then asked every day for a week wehther it was fixed16:40
naccbecause, after i asked, they didn't know what a bug was16:40
nacci think they possibly still don't16:40
robeph[not the eclipse bit he needs the package that isn't in the current version he is using and 16 does,  so upgrade not plausible I assume16:40
oerheksthat amd R5 m430 is not even supportd by amdgpu16:40
robephcan he just add the openjdk repo and pull from there?16:40
robephdistro aside?16:40
naccrobeph: probably16:40
oerheksopenjdk ppa ? .. i find only old builds, 201716:40
robephI'm not keen on debian/apt package management,  I usually use gentoo16:40
robephso not sure what can and can't be done16:41
robephas per https://docs.datastax.com/en/cassandra/3.0/cassandra/install/installOpenJdkDeb.html16:41
robephbut if packages are still masked by distro, wouldn't work,  not sure how that all works though,16:42
robephdon't wanna tell him to try that and it not be working,  cos probably confuse the poor guy more,16:44
ducassei wonder if he's this helpless irl16:49
oerheksit is sad, when you buy a laptop that gives such problems16:51
robephmy guess is ESL16:51
robephhis english is... a bit interesting and his phrasing,  may be using translator16:51
robephwhich would account for why a lot of stuff isn't meshing16:51
naccalso he has no idea what he's doing16:52
naccgenerally16:52
naccwhich is fine16:52
oerheksMy english conversation is not that good too :-D16:53
naccbut then he's doing some ... strange things16:53
lotuspsychjeoerheks: lol16:53
hggdhapart from the nick-spamming16:53
lotuspsychjehis bug url is crazy16:53
robephoerheks: yeah but if he's using a translator it becomes messier than just not being wonderful at english16:53
ducassehe attaches to people who've answered him once16:53
robephhahahah16:53

ubot5Ubuntu bug 1745646 in linux (Ubuntu) "Battery drains when laptop is off (shutdown)" [Medium,Triaged]16:53
oerhekshow did i become a member ... hmmm?16:54
hggdhrobeph: no, he is not using a translator, just happens he is not fluent16:54
ducasseif i see that link once more i'll have a seizure16:54
hggdhthe thing with him is he will not stop asking, even when directly asked to16:55
robephokay,  well16:55
hggdh(the "I have a problem so somebody *must* help me" syndrome16:55
robephhe's one of those fellas.16:55

TJ-Afternoon oerheks, how's life?17:23
oerheksDo you remember gopal?17:23
oerheksgood, waiting for diner to be served ( by me )17:24
TJ-oerheks: who could forget!?17:24
oerheksDon't join #ubuntu then, if you have nightmares17:24
lotuspsychjelol17:25
ducasseand now this guy wants him to use docker - as if that's not adding to the problem17:26
TJ-I don't see he's made any updates to the two tracking bug reports (LP and b.k.o.) in a few days17:27
lotuspsychjehttps://insights.ubuntu.com/2018/02/09/ubuntu-desktop-weekly-update-february-9-2018/17:27
TJ-I'm susbcribed; been hoping he'll do a bisect around the 4.4>onwards versions to pin-point where the regression is17:28
lotuspsychjeTJ-: seen a bug like this before? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-hwe/+bug/174923717:31
ubot5Ubuntu bug 1749237 in linux-hwe (Ubuntu) "External usb 3.0 harddisk not detected by default on 16.04.3" [Undecided,New]17:31
lotuspsychjeTJ-: ive tryed to add usbcore.autosuspend to kernel line, add to modprobe, disable in laptop-mode-tools nothing worked17:33
TJ-lotuspsychje: Yes; sometimes there's power management options in firmware config that affect it17:33
oerheksTJ-, i read back, he also didn't look @ HP for a bios update too?17:34
ducassehe needs really explicit instructions to do anything at all17:34
TJ-oerheks: I did - there isn't one, and it's a common problem across multiple HP models and affects some Windows installs too, which suggests a firmware/ACPI trigger at least17:34
oerheksoh oke17:35
oerheksi know it is a HP issue, m43017:35
lotuspsychjeBluesKaj: one for you :p http://news.softpedia.com/news/you-can-now-install-kde-s-plasma-mobile-on-your-android-smartphone-here-s-how-519792.shtml17:46
BluesKajlotuspsychje, thanks for the link, but I don't use my phone as a computer, it's just a cheap alctel mini..to me it's just phone and sometimes a camera :-)17:49
