=== chat is now known as Guest41109 [05:50] yo guys! [06:05] I have a weird project that I'd like a little guidance with. I'm trying to become a managed server host for a pretty niche old style of telnet-based game (MUD, MUX, MUSH, MUCK, etc), which these days usually want an accompanying wiki. I have a Linux VPS from DreamCompute. Currently have about 5-10 user accounts between different games. MY OBJECTIVE: [06:06] I want to organize what is currently a hell of a muddle, establish automated backups, and possibly resource control (like preventing a given user from using more than X CPU or RAM). I need to learn how to automate backups, probably to a completely separate machine. [06:07] I'm not new to Linux by a long shot, but I've never embarked on a project with goals of it being Professional like this. Where should I start? [06:10] Hello [06:10] is there a way in the intaller for ubuntu server 16.04 to skip detecting the network cards [06:22] is there [06:22] case when ever the network cards get detected it cause the idrac card to stop responding [06:49] * Volund ponders the viability of having a bunch of different disks for different mount points... like having /home on a completely different disk... hmmm. [06:49] Thinking about it, that's probably common. [06:53] does anyone here know how to make the installer skip network card detection and auto configuration cause when that step happens it locks up my idrac card then i can't do anything === ShaRose_ is now known as ShaRose === devil_ is now known as devilz === moinjaro is now known as easty === strive is now known as myso [15:43] sorry for asking this again but i need help [15:43] does anyone here know how to make the installer skip network card detection and auto configuration cause when that step happens it locks up my idrac card then i can't do anything [15:46] jvwjgames: add to the kernel command-line "netcfg/disable_autoconfig" is supposed to work, it's an option looked for by debian-installer [15:47] ok thanks [15:52] TJ: is that after the --- i put it and do i need a space between the --- [15:56] Before... optiions after --- are added to the /installed/ kernel cmdline [15:57] sometimes we out the same option before and after if it's needed to boot on that particular hardware [15:58] ok starting [15:58] i hope it works [15:59] scanning for cdrom [15:59] damn [15:59] it's detecting network hardware :( [16:00] You may need it as "netcfg/disable_autoconfig=true" ... but reading up it isn't stopping hardware detection, only autoconfig [16:00] my card just froze [16:00] i lost connection to server [16:01] there might be a hw-detect/... option but I don't see one documented for network devices [16:01] now calling data center to have them unplug and plug backin my server [16:01] why is it dying? [16:02] why would a simple network hardware detection lockup a IDRAC card [16:03] i went to the data center last night and my idrac card froze but the intaller continued [16:04] if there is a way to reset the idrac card without powering off i think i could get it back and continue the install [16:06] is it definitely the network device causing this? wht actually happens? I know of problems where it can freeze when configuring the screen unless something like "vga=771" is on the kernel command line [16:07] it could be missing firmware too, does the driver for that device require firmware? [16:08] is this any use? https://lxadm.com/Installing_Debian_Squeeze_on_DELL_PowerEdge_R710_via_DRAC [16:10] i have an R610 but it might apply [16:10] i am looking at the details of what my networkcards are [16:12] but the other thing is it doen't ask me that [16:14] seems like it is something to do with the system config, the R610 is certified https://certification.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201003-5449/ [16:16] hmmm [16:16] which ubuntu release are you installing? [16:17] 16.04 [16:17] hmmm, maybe this helps? https://www.dell.com/community/PowerEdge-General-HW/IDRAC6-can-t-install-Ubuntu-14-04-server-from-virtual-media/m-p/4461786 [16:17] yes thats what happens reading more now thanks [16:18] the last response, option 2) might help [16:18] " If installing at the console is not an option: For the duration of the installation, disable all but one network interface in the BIOS." [16:20] thanks man for helping me out [16:27] atleast it isn't a hardware issue [16:27] i was afraid of that [16:29] darn [16:29] I used all my remote hands for this month [16:32] nevermind they had a policy change i get 10 a month so they are power cycling it [16:33] and since i use only one interface it's fine that all the others get disabled [16:38] You can enable the others once it's installed of course; this is only for the installer [17:00] ok [17:01] jvwjgames: it sounds weird you need remote hands? does your host not provide network power control? [17:02] i can check [17:10] Remote power control would normally be via the iDRAC. I suppose the hosting facility *could* provide remotely switchable PDUs in addition to that, but the equipment costs to do so would make me surprised. [17:11] This is one of those cases where it is unfortunate that the iDRAC isn't set up to use its dedicated ethernet port [17:12] i just set it up that way [17:12] but low and behold i got disconnected [17:13] but i just switched it to that [17:14] so i am going to go down there and plug an ethernet cable into there and also into my switch and to the port [17:14] and to the lan 1 port* [17:14] You mean, you reconfigured the iDRAC port selection, and then were disconnected? Well, yes, that'll happen if the iDRAC can't communicate on the newly selected port with the existing IP config [17:15] i know [17:15] i am just hoping the idrac won't frezze when i go back to the installer again [17:16] Is the iDRAC *really* freezing, or is it just a network interface issue as described in the dell community post that TJ- found? [17:16] I suppose it could be hard to tell without a working OS installation to troubleshoot from [17:17] probably the network interface issue sorry don't know why i keep saying that [17:17] If it is a network interface issue then moving all iDRAC network traffic to the dedicated port seems like it should avoid any interaction with the installer [17:18] and that is what i am leaving it at that deticated port [17:18] dedicated* [17:20] if only i could tell the data center to move the port for me it would save me a trip [17:20] but there are getting tired of going down there [17:21] Depending on how many servers you have in this facility, you might want to look at netboot installation supported by a DHCP/PXE/TFTP setup on Linux in the future - that's what I am used to, so I never actually tried the iDRAC virtual media option [17:21] 1 server [17:22] ah, no, then [17:22] but i do have a server at another data center [17:22] so could i tell the dhcp server at the other data center to send dhcp traffic to the 2nd server [17:22] or can dhcp not cross internet [17:23] For one server, if you're going anyway, you could just take a USB stick and install from that... [17:23] you're not going to do dhcp over the intenet [17:23] true [17:23] ok [17:23] DHCP is restricted to the local subnet unless supported by relay agents [17:24] even then, you're going to relay "on the internet" [17:24] and that second server dosen't have an idrac card [17:24] luckly that data center is closer to me [17:26] and to show you how far i will be driving [17:27] https://www.google.com/maps/dir/40.6607049,-111.9942783/XMission,+51+E+400+S+%23200,+Salt+Lake+City,+UT+84111/@40.6967813,-111.9943563,12z/data=!4m9!4m8!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x8752f51455555555:0xc5492b9d147f6f1b!2m2!1d-111.889238!2d40.760895!3e0 [17:31] I think this is straying away from ubuntu discussion here === chat is now known as Guest32622 === chat is now known as Guest16356 [19:29] guys what the fatest way to export databases trough phpmyadmin or mysql shell ? [19:47] not to export them at all [20:08] so an update on the IDRAC issue it is fixed and i can install ubuntu over the internet via IDRAC [20:09] i had to plug in a ethernet cable into the dedicated IDRAC port and i tested the installer and ping the card continually and the card stayed up even through network card detection [20:10] normally that is a nic driver issue [20:10] that kills the idrac/ilo/ipmi interface when it can *share* a nic port [21:10] anyone know about amd opencl 2.0 on server? [21:11] i installed latest amd drivers(17.50), installed latest amd app sdk(3.0), i guess i have opencl 1.2 and not 2.0. not sure how to get 2.0 on there. [21:12] i thought 2.0 came in the app sdk but i guess not. also, im a newb. [21:13] https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/OpenCL2-Driver.aspx this is the driver but im not sure which install notes to follow in there. [21:59] SO guys [22:02] Aspiring Linux administrator here. I'm looking to up my game on an existing VPS I've got. Get some scripts going for user management and stuff. [22:02] Was wondering if anyone had tips about tools I should be using! [22:05] Actually I also wanted to just talk about my experiences so far and see if anyone can set me straight me on some things I've noticed. === karstensrage_ is now known as karstensrage
