BluesKaj'Morning D0U91E :-) ...how goes it ?14:41
user|65753ver 16.04.4 keeps disconnecting from the router when using wi-fi, as did ver 15. Is this problem likely to be solved in ver 1714:42
D0U91Estill rocking with my bionic beta waiting with baited breath hoping nothing goes drastically wrong before final14:42
BluesKajyeah Bionic here as well. Keep having hidden crashes that are notified, but not apparent14:45
D0U91Euser|65753, I have not heard of a problem like that - I would think it is a config error but cannot say for sure as the version numbers are not familiar to me14:45
D0U91EBluesKaj, same but had no effect on machines performance so summed it up to my lucky stars14:45
user|65753I tried in vain to put the correct data into the wireless networking module. But the connection drops after about 10 mins. I switched power management off. This problem did not occur in ver 1414:47

BionicMacHello. Is there a particular dropbox package for use with kubuntu(kde) like I have installed nautilus-dropbox on my gnome Ubuntu?19:46

phoenix_firebrdBionicMac: I am not aware of one, but googling kde dropbox gets may results19:47
Prototypeok,  a friend pointed this site out to me and asked me to look at item 111  (link on its way)19:47
BionicMacPrototype: I use expressvpn but they have their own ubuntu package that is extremely user-friendly.19:47
phoenix_firebrdBionicMac: but a official native application, I am not aware of such19:48

user|88943I have 7200RMP, so is not slow... i forgot to use gparted.. but i tried with kde....19:52
user|88943Someone can help me..?19:52
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: open konsole, run the command "dmesg". check if you have any related error messages there. what is the size of the partition/hard drive which is processed using kde partition manager19:53
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> @user|88943, Sound like you may have (accidently?) moved a partition during the partition setup.  Depenind on the size of your drive and the amount of data saved, moving partition can take a like time (6+ hours on tradition HD's).19:55
user|88943I have 1tb hdd, so i tried to resize 600gb into 500gb.. https://thepasteb.in/p/k5hY0E8Avn6sE19:55

phoenix_firebrduser|88943: resizing for a partition of that size, could take a lot of time19:56
user|88943im waiting about 3.5hours almost 4 hours... how much i need to wait?19:57
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: but you dont see any disk activity?19:57
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: either in task manager or the hdd led?19:57
user|88943i see , about 100+R/W on htop19:57
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: and the cpu usage?19:57
user|88943Umm, about 40/30%19:58
wolfram_hi there! got a minor problem and would be thankful for assistance:  got a x220 connected to a screen via dockingstation. usually it works like a charm, but some hours the dp port stopped recognizing the screen at all.19:58
user|88943I have 4 core.19:58
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: I see no error message in the log you gave, seems the operation is going well. I think you need to wait.19:59
=== Zzzz is now known as redwhite
user|88943Maybe i give you full log?19:59
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: you can calculate the time assuming your hdd throughput as 50 MB/s and calcuate the ETA19:59
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: full log is not needed20:00
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> Resizing partitions is very quick. However, using a partition GUI such as gparted or KDE partition manager, it very easy to accidenlty slide/move a partition.  I have accidenlty moved them myself even though I know exactly what NOT to do.20:00
user|88943i pressed only resize20:01
user|88943i tried a test, so 80mb/s but how to calculate eta?20:01
phoenix_firebrdIrcsomeBot: that is possible and I have accidentally done that too20:01
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: during the resizing you might have moved the partition by mistake. What are the pending operation shown in kde partition manager20:03
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> @wolfram_, Sorry, no experience with docking station here.  Can you see the monitor with xrandr? What's the brand of the video card.20:03
user|88943just i see someting moving xxxxxx some codes20:03
BionicMacI have a question concerning my installation preocess on kubuntu. I installed and booted just fine. However, I wanted to encrypt the entire partition that I am installing kubuntu to. Everytime I chose "encrypt" for the partition during the manul partition segment of the install it would fail. Only way I could get through the install is to "not" check encrypt. I wonder why this happens?20:03

phoenix_firebrduser|88943: I think any resizing process wont start without sudo access, didn't it ask for the password when it started to resize or when kde partition manager started20:08
user|88943is saying me about root acces on opening20:09
wolfram_@DarinMiller thanks for your reply! It neither works via laptop dp. xrandr says disconnected. does "Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)" help? maybe hardware drivers for video out gone "bad"?20:09

phoenix_firebrduser|88943: thats the desired behavior20:09
user|88943so this cause about root or ?20:10
phoenix_firebrdBionicMac: I dont know much, but are you talking about what they call lvm?20:10
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: kde partition has root access20:11
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: I mean the kde partition manager20:11
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> @wolfram_, Which version of Kubuntu?20:11
user|88943i don't know why the kde partition manager took more long that another programs.. for me resize another program is about 1 minute finished.20:12
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: it depends upon how many sectors have to be relocated and how much they are fragmented.20:12
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> @wolfram_, One possible trouble shooting option would be creating an 18.04 live USB to see if the live session also has the same issue.20:12
user|88943maybe latest log for me ( i removed usb that time) [45559.816111] FAT-fs (sdb1): unable to read boot sector to mark fs as dirty20:13
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: lesser of those takes less time to resize/move20:13
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: the partition you are resizing is on a removable hdd?20:14
user|88943but this partition is using about 200gb :/20:14
user|88943i saying on resize kde partition manager say is finished about 20 sec, but moving filesystem is not finished..20:15
wolfram_@DarinMiller 16.04, i would really like to try reinstalling all drivers, but I don't have a clue how.20:16
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: that is what IrcsomeBot told, I think you move the partition by accident20:18
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: that is what IrcsomeBot told, I think you moved the partition by accident20:18
BionicMacphoenix_firebrd: Well, lvm is not the encryption, that is a logical volume manager which can be used along with luks encryption. Basically the standard default option in the ubuntu installer uses lukc encryption and you can chose to use lvm or not. LUKS disk encrytion does not require lvm , it is an option.20:18
user|88943maybe i don't know but how fix that?20:19
BionicMacs/lukc/luks/20:19
phoenix_firebrdBionicMac: what is the issue in your case?20:19
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: wait for a long time :)20:20
BionicMacIt seem everytime I try and encrypt the root  partition it fails ( the installer will not let me get past that point I have to change it to "no encryption" to carry on.). I have no issues when I use encryption on a non-root partition with ubuntu installers.20:20
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: you could type this here and the system will tell you.20:21
phoenix_firebrd!patience | user|8894320:21

user|88943So i try to wait about another 4 hours, i think next 4 hours my harddisk maybe die :/ because is not designed for 24/7 hours (i using this pc about 12 hours right now)20:22
phoenix_firebrd:'D I think so , lol20:22
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: whenever you need patience come here and the irc mods will give you a lot20:23
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: I understand20:23
user|88943Have good hours, i try to leave any aplications (to save my span life)20:24
phoenix_firebrduser|88943: If what you say is true, then you have to weight your options, whether is data is more important or not. As far as I know all the hdd are designed to handle decent heat for a little bit of time20:25
BionicMacphoenix_firebrd: I wasn't using lvm. Only encryption. I select this option for the root partition in the ubuntu manual partitioning section of the installer and it will not let me encrypt the root partition. Only non-root partitions. Here is a link I found a user with my exact issue: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2328306 <- I am reading this now.20:25

phoenix_firebrdI am waiting for wayland to become default20:37
BionicMacLooks like I am going to have to bite the bullet and install a lot of gnome libs anyway to have more ubuntu packages available.  case and point: nautilus-dropbox runs fine in kde. It's only called nautilus* because it gives a menu entry in nautilus. The dropbox runs the same in either desktop.20:37
phoenix_firebrdok20:38
phoenix_firebrdBionicMac: I have droped dropbox a long time ago and I am not sure about it20:39
BionicMacSince there is no specific kde|qt-dropbox "official-ish" Ubuntu package. I could download the .deb from dropbox but I like to use Ubuntu repo packages as much as possible.20:39
phoenix_firebrdBionicMac: If you are worried about the credibility of the package from dropbox, then dont install it. I never install a software other than from the repos. If you dont care of the security, then you can go head and install the deb package20:41
phoenix_firebrdBionicMac: have you checked if there is any snap package available?20:41
BionicMacphoenix_firebrd: Yeah, I need somewhere to store files on a remote (read: cloud blah) server so... dropbox is probably the least of the evils. I guess I should go ahead and  spin up a server of my own just as cheap as a dropbox account. Plus I could run Ubuntu on it.20:42
BionicMacphoenix_firebrd: Yes, I am picky about the credibility of packages/software in general. I do trust the dropbox direct download though.  Like I said , I could install nautilus-dropbox from Ubuntu.20:43
phoenix_firebrdBionicMac: I dont judge you, me dumping dropbox is a political move. I dont hate cloud. Its just the packages from the untrusted sources that scares me20:43
BionicMacUnderstood.20:43

Guest23426Hey is anybody trying 18.04 beta?22:37
phoenix_firebrdBionicMac: :)22:38
BionicMacphoenix_firebrd: I documented step by step with pictures/ss and I will be glad to make a HOWTO/tips/hints for someone else in the community that may use it.22:38
phoenix_firebrdGuest23426: me22:38
phoenix_firebrdGuest23426: using live cd, i test22:38
phoenix_firebrdBionicMac: do you have as a file?22:39
Guest23426I installed it on my laptop.  Pretty good for the most part.22:39
phoenix_firebrdGuest23426: good22:39
Guest23426I don't get sddm upon bootup, so I have to login to console and type startx everytime22:39
Guest23426it's overall pretty stable22:39
BionicMacphoenix_firebrd: This is a rough draft. I will make this nicer and put it on a blog or something.22:40
BionicMachttps://pastebin.com/kR2KPkXN22:40
BionicMacphoenix_firebrd: ^^ That is the the entire process.22:40
phoenix_firebrdGuest23426: did you install 18.04?22:40
Esteban16HI. I'm trying to come back to Windows but it seems more complicated that I thought22:40
phoenix_firebrdBionicMac: blog will be super22:41
phoenix_firebrdBionicMac: when someone googles, it could lead to your blog22:41
BionicMacphoenix_firebrd: Of course the links are not hyperIzed you will have to copy and paste to view the screenshots.22:41
BionicMacphoenix_firebrd: Very true.22:41
Esteban16Is there a way to change BIOS boot to UEFI boot?22:41
Guest23426phoenix_firebrd: Yes, It's Kubuntu 18.0422:42
phoenix_firebrdGuest23426: have you updated after the install?22:42
BionicMacphoenix_firebrd: Screenshots turned out perfect also.22:42
phoenix_firebrdGuest23426: are you using a nvidia gpu?22:42
phoenix_firebrdBionicMac: ya22:42
Guest23426phoenix_firebrd: I have updated, yes.  And it's integrated graphics22:43
phoenix_firebrdGuest23426: do you see any error in sddm log?22:44
Guest23426I'm a bit of a n00b, sorry.  What folder would it be in?22:44
phoenix_firebrdGuest23426: the file is in /var/log22:45
phoenix_firebrdGuest23426: /var/log/sddm.log22:45
Guest23426thanks :D brb22:45
Esteban16Is there a way to change BIOS boot to UEFI boot?22:45
Guest23426sddm.log appears to be blank22:46
phoenix_firebrdGuest23426: the greeter crashes only on boot or it always crashes?22:48
Guest23426Esteban16: Is there an option in your BIOS menu?22:48
phoenix_firebrdGuest23426: its not that one22:48
phoenix_firebrdGuest23426: what Esteban16 problem is software related22:49
Esteban16I'm trying to change boot order but I can't22:49
Guest23426phoenix_firebrd: I never see the greeter.  It goes immediately to command line.  I think it went to the greeter once after an update, but then it hasn't since22:49
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: you installed a bios based os and then a efi based one later?22:49
Esteban16No, I installed Kubuntu throught dual reboot. Previously I had Windows 1022:50
Guest23426I've searched for a solution, and so far I have tried adding startx to .bashrc22:50
phoenix_firebrdGuest23426: it could be the .xauthority file in your user folder creating the issue22:50
phoenix_firebrdGuest23426: delete a file named .xauthority in the /home/<username>/ folder22:50
Guest23426ok22:51
phoenix_firebrdGuest23426: and try restarting22:51
Guest23426okay I've deleted .xauthority22:52
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: now do you have windows 10? because if you have windows and when you switch from bios to uefi and then basic, booting into windows 10 will break22:52
Guest23426I'll reboot and see what happened.  thank you for your help22:52
Esteban16I completely deleted Windows.22:52
phoenix_firebrdGuest23426: yw22:53
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: see if this article helps https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI22:54
Esteban16Thank you, I'll read it. Just want to say that I want to switch from bios to uefi because I've read I need that in order to install Windows.22:55
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: you mean windows 10 creators update?22:56
Esteban16Yes, phoenix_firebrd22:57
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: where did you read about that requirement? I did have any issue installing with bios mode22:57
scott__phoenix_firebrd: hi there, I'm the one who was having trouble with my login.  I deleted the .xauthority file, rebooted, and it still went to terminal22:58
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: I only had issue when I switched to uefi mode in bios and then back22:58
Esteban16phoenix_firebrd: From https://www.onetransistor.eu/2015/09/uefi-ntfs-bootable-windows-usb-linux.html22:59
Esteban16You mean there's no need for switching?22:59
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: as far as I know, you dont need to do it23:00
phoenix_firebrdscott__: wait23:00
Esteban16phoenix_firebrd: I see. Then I just need the bootable USB and install Windows?23:01
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: ya23:02
scott__phoenix_firebrd: sure23:02
phoenix_firebrdscott__: are you on 18.04 now?23:03
Esteban16It sounds pretty easy. But when selecting the USB operative system. I think the USB lacks files23:03
Esteban16*But when selecting the USB appers operative system not found23:03
scott__phoenix_firebrd: yes23:03
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: cant understand what you say, can you elaborate ?23:04
phoenix_firebrdscott__: is there any error messages in xorg.0.log?23:05
Esteban16phoenix_firebrd: In the boot menu (Fn+F12) I press the USB with the ISO image, but appears: Operative system not found. I think there are missing files in the USB, besides the ISO image23:06
scott__phoenix_firebrd: I see some errors about fonts not existing - "usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi/"23:08
phoenix_firebrdscott__: run the following command in the terminal and paste the output here "journalctl -u sddm.service"23:11
phoenix_firebrdscott__: use any paste service like paste.ubuntu.com23:11
scott__My console keeps telling me that "Only console users are allowed to run the X server"23:13
Esteban16phoenix_firebrd: I think that's the problem. I've watched many tutorials and they show more files, not just the ISO image. But I don't know where they're from23:13
scott__https://pastebin.com/Q0U8azNH23:14
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: usb of windows or linux?23:14
Esteban16phoenix_firebrd: If you refer to the ISO image, it's Windows23:15
phoenix_firebrdscott__: paste your xorg.0.log23:16
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: no you said the operating system image you have written in the USB that is not getting detected during boot, which one is it?23:17
Esteban16It's Windows 10, phoenix_firebrd23:18
scott__https://pastebin.com/CxmNCXT6 - Xorg.0.log23:18
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: what software are you using to write the image to usb?23:18
acheronukis sddm-theme-breeze installed?23:19
Esteban16I'm not using any software, I just copied/paged the image.23:19
acheronukscott__: ^^23:19
phoenix_firebrdscott__: you said you are using an integrated graphics card, what intel processor are you using?23:19
phoenix_firebrdscott__: try acheronuk suggestion23:20
scott__sddm-theme-breeze is installed23:20
phoenix_firebrdacheronuk: scott__is testing 18.04 and its a fresh install23:20
Esteban16phoenix_firebrd: I didn't know it was necessary to use a software23:21
acheronukX or wayland?23:21
scott__intel celeron cpu 900 @ 2.20 ghz23:21
acheronukoh, nevermind23:21
phoenix_firebrdscott__: it could be a bug in the beta release, does this happen with a live iso?23:23
scott__acheronuk: It goes straight to command line, and I have to type startx after every reboot.23:23
acheronukyeah, I was not thinking23:23
scott__phoenix_firebrd: No I didn't have any issues with the live iso23:24
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: you mean you copied the iso into the pendrive O_o ?23:24
Esteban16Yes :/23:24
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: lol23:24
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: you need to use a usb writing software to write a iso image to usb23:25
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: I would recommend Rosa image writer for linux isos and Rufus for windows isos23:25
Esteban16If I had known it from the beginning xD23:26
Esteban16phoenix_firebrd: Thank you so much, I'll try what you told me23:26
phoenix_firebrdacheronuk: sddm-theme-breeze is a resource?23:26
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: yw23:27
acheronukresource? it's qml+images+config23:28
BionicMacThis is a very very nice distro. I'm partial to kubuntu over the standard gnome ubuntu.23:28
phoenix_firebrdacheronuk: sddm loads it right?23:28
acheronukyes23:29
phoenix_firebrdacheronuk: in that case, If there is an error in the process it gets logged in the systemd journal right?23:29
phoenix_firebrdacheronuk: previously when there was lightdm greeter, I used to see some qml object error related to the greeter in the lightdm logs23:30
acheronukphoenix_firebrd: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/h3t5bqd8VD/23:31
acheronuk^^ log from a running VM23:31
phoenix_firebrdacheronuk: 18.04?23:34
acheronukphoenix_firebrd: yeah. todays iso installed this morning in a vm23:35
phoenix_firebrdacheronuk: how did you obtain this log?23:35
phoenix_firebrdsyslog?23:36
acheronuk'journalctl -u sddm.service'23:37
scott__i know I could look at the man page, but what does the -u flag do?23:37
acheronuku=unit23:38
scott__oh ok23:39
acheronuke.g. just filter log messages for that unit23:39
scott__cool23:39
phoenix_firebrdscott__: did you install a daily image or beta 1?23:40
scott__beta 123:48
phoenix_firebrdscott__: is the system update fully?23:48
scott__yes, except I have 2 updates for java that are being held back for some reason23:49
phoenix_firebrdscott__: there seems to be a known bug related to sddm, have you seen this https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BionicBeaver/Beta1/Kubuntu23:50
phoenix_firebrdscott__:  this is the bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/144714423:51
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1447144 in ubiquity (Ubuntu) "oem-config forgets to update /etc/sddm.conf" [High,Fix released]23:51
scott__I just read that, thanks for sharing.  Looks like I need to remove the /etc/sddm.conf file and restart sddm23:52
scott__would that command be sudo service sddm restart?23:52
scott__or I guess reboot23:53
phoenix_firebrdscott__ I think you need to use the systemd commands now23:53
phoenix_firebrdscott__: better reboot23:53
Esteban16phoenix_firebrd: I can't run Rufus. I just have the .exe file23:55
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: you cant run rufus in linux as it is a windows only application.23:56
acheronukwas this an oem install then?23:56
Esteban16phoenix_firebrd: Oh, then how do I use it with the image?23:57
phoenix_firebrdacheronuk: he is trying out the solution given in the known bug, it works then it could be bigger issue with sddm23:57
scott__phoenix_firebrd: I don't have /etc/sddm.conf, I have /etc/init/sddm.conf, would that be the file to backup and delete?23:57
phoenix_firebrdEsteban16: try buring the iso image with the rosa image writer23:57
acheronukthat bug only affects an oem install, so unlikely to be that23:58
scott__darn23:58
phoenix_firebrdacheronuk: scott__ says he doesnt have a sddm.config file in /etc but has one in /etc/init/ has the config file location got moved?23:59
