valoriehowevever all files seem to be read only in spite of chowning and chmoding00:00
BionicMacthe disk/partition needs to be mounted in read write when it is mounted.00:00
BionicMacAre you actually trying to write (save files to) the that disk or just copy files from?00:01
valoriesince I'm trying to access it from a different drive than originally, I'm assuming that is a safety measure00:01
valorieI need to read and write00:01
valorieit certainly was read/write from my previous install on the dead ssd00:02
valorieoh shoot, I'm out of time for now00:02
valoriedinner and meeting before I'm back00:02
valoriethanks for your help so far, BionicMac00:03
BionicMacIs this a usb drive?00:04
mparilloAfter installing BB, my password displays in SDDM. Could that be related to the new theme?00:06
BionicMacvalorie: Is this a usb drive?00:06
BionicMacvalorie: Let's try this first: (make sure you are not in the directory /media/valorie/Data  then type this ->   'sudo mount -o remount,rw /dev/sdb1' 00:13
BionicMacIf that mount/remount doesn't work, no worries. We can explicitly give it mount points & file system type, np.  00:20
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> Very clean, successful Beta 2 OEM install completed.  Moving on to manual partition....03:35
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> FWIW, successfully upgrade a 32b 17.10 session to 18.04 just for grins and the process was flawless.  (Previous attempt with 64b version were crashed for dep issues during upgrade).04:00
IrcsomeBot<DarinMiller> Manual partition using minimal install was also successfull.   Calling it a night....04:06
valorienot a usb; it is a HD04:37
BionicMacOk. DiD you run the 'mount remount command yet?04:49
BionicMacvalorie: I can't see my irc channel log here but you should see the command in this channel window.04:52
valorieyes, I did it, and I think it's working04:53
BionicMacyup04:53
BionicMactype 'df' and paste it here. or 'df -a' and pastebin it. try to save/edit a file to your Data partition please.04:54
BionicMacI'm booted up to my first test of Kubuntu Live session beta 2. 04:54
valoriehttp://paste.ubuntu.com/p/2pW3sDMK57/05:14
valorieBionicMac: ^^05:14
BionicMacvalorie: would you type 'mount | grep sdb' and pastebin it please? Actually it will only be a couple of lines you could paste that result here. either way. thanks05:20
BionicMacvalorie: Did you test write to disk ?05:20
valoriemount | grep sdb05:21
valorie/dev/sdb1 on /media/valorietest/Data type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,default_permissions,allow_other,blksize=4096,uhelper=udisks2)05:21
valorie/dev/sdb2 on /media/valorietest/9e20e1ac-d8de-49a9-9243-f35f01abdb15 type ext4 (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,data=ordered,uhelper=udisks2)05:22
valorieI will try that, sure05:22
BionicMacYoua re all good. See the (rw  <- ?05:22
BionicMacYou're*05:22
valorieyes!05:22
valorie\o/05:22
valorieso why is ktorrent still fighting me05:23
valorielol05:23
BionicMachmmmm... I don't know that. Is ktorrent not wanting to write to that partition?05:23
valorieit keeps crashing on me instead of writing there05:24
valorieso I guess I'll install qbittorent instead05:24
-queuebot:#kubuntu-devel- Builds: Kubuntu Desktop amd64 [Bionic Beta 2] has been updated (20180404)05:25
-queuebot:#kubuntu-devel- Builds: Kubuntu Desktop i386 [Bionic Beta 2] has been updated (20180404)05:25
BionicMacvalorie: First thin you should try writing to partition. just 'cd /media/valorietest/Data && touch DELETEME && ls -la DELETEME' and see if it wrote the file DELETEME. 05:26
valorietouch: cannot touch 'DELETEME': No such file or directory05:28
valorieso no05:28
BionicMacPlus you manuall remounted that partition. We should make sure the system is going to mount it properly/automatically when you boot. With the correct rw permissions. 05:28
valoriewell, my son should be able to help me with that within the next few days05:30
valoriebut I just wanted to get up and running so I could do the beta testing05:31
valorieI won't restart until that's done05:31
BionicMacRight. Have you rebooted?05:31
valorienot since this morning05:31
BionicMacI mean I am not sure where you stand. Are you stillbooting the same OS on the machine? that awas your storage drive ?05:32
valorieI'm booting from /dev/sdb205:33
BionicMacYou sure because I show your / root partition to be on /dev/sda205:34
valorieerr, 05:34
valorie /dev/sdb1 was the Data disk from my old install from the dead ssd05:34
valoriehmmm05:35
valoriehow can that be? it's the dead one05:35
valorieI think05:35
BionicMacDid you move any cables around after the disk died?05:35
valorieunsure05:35
valorieheck no05:35
valoriejust tried to get up and running again05:36
valoriethis is a laptop05:36
BionicMacFrom the pastebin output your / (root)  is "/dev/sda2" and  your boot (/boot/efi) is /dev/sda1.05:37
BionicMacIn other words you are installed running and booting from the disk "/dev/sda" -  two partitions /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 .05:38
BionicMacDid you reinstall after the crash? Because that is where your system is running on.05:39
BionicMacAt least that iswhat I would guess from that output. 05:40
valoriewell05:42
valoriehuh05:42
BionicMacSometimes it is hard troubleshoot when I can't put my hands and eyes on it. 05:43
valorieunsure then why I'm missing all my data05:43
valorieyes05:43
valoriethanks for your help so far05:43
BionicMacYou're quite welcome.   05:44
BionicMacI'm testing the Live session beta2... So far so good. One problem child is "Kontact" I will have to file a bug and report this on my results. 05:49
BionicMacvalorie: I'm going to take a break. My eyes are hurting from staring at the screen today. If Idon't see you again tonight then Good Luck and I am sure you will get the laptop sorted out. 05:51
BionicMacI will finish testing the live session tonight. Tomorrow I will test a full install to disk.05:51
IrcsomeBot<Valoriez> gah, my screen froze06:03
IrcsomeBot<Valoriez> gonna wait it out if possible06:03
IrcsomeBot<Valoriez> thank you again!06:04

BionicMacI was testing "Kubuntu Live Session" on yesterdays daily (which is considered beta2 according to the qatracker). Anyone else having issues with running 'Kontact' ?  Very very slow starting up, if at all here. I'm retesting later this afternoon on testcases  "Live Session" and "Install - Manual Partitiong". Just thought I would drop here incase someone else can run Kontact and see what gives. I'll file proper on qatracker if the issue persists 18:39

valoriehmmm, why isn't zsync using the beta1 image I gave it23:19
valorie:(23:19
valorieI didn't solve the ro data drive so copied it over23:20
BionicMacvalorie: That's a shame to lose the data. 23:21
BionicMacvalorie: So you didn't lose an ssd drive? I thought you lost a drive. Anyways, I guess you have you have a fresh cleanly installed system now. 23:23
valorieI'll go over to my son's house this weekend so he can help me figure out what's going on23:23
BionicMacOk great. =) 23:24
valorieI can just copy the data I need for now23:24
valorieannoying, but whatever23:24
valoriegah, no i386 tests at ALL23:24
BionicMacoh great you can access the data from that partition we were working on last night?23:24
valoriemuch less on i386 machines23:24
valorie:(23:24
BionicMacWell, I could grab an old i386 out of my closet if it need to be done that bad.23:25
BionicMacI'll have to put one together from old hw but it can be donw. 23:25
BionicMacs/donw/done/23:25

valorieso I've been doing testing on my travel laptop23:26

BionicMacSounds like I have another project. Lte me get through with these two tests on the new image (Install-manual paritioning & Live session) and I will start putting that i386 together.23:27
BionicMacMy old machines are so old I need a seperate Wifi card. Where are all my cat5 cables.... 23:33
valorienow to wonder if anyone reads the ML.....23:35
BionicMacI saw your email conserning 386. An d the only email in April is you announcing the beta2 dropping.23:36

BionicMacIt's easy to do.23:40
BionicMacvalorie: So this image listed under Bionic Beaver Beta 2 on qatracker is not the official beta2? A candidate? 23:41
valoriethere was one mail from santa_ as well23:41
valorieit is a candidate, yes23:41
valoriecould be the same as the final23:41
valorieif all goes well23:41
valorieor if they discover something serious and are able to fix, they will respin23:42
valorieso this is first-level testing23:42
valoriebefore the beta2 is released23:42
BionicMacOk thanks. I'm looking for a good true dedicated server host. Any recommendations? If I go with a VPS then I already know a couple of good ones.23:43
wxlas an ubuntu member you get a discount from gandi23:45
BionicMacIf I go vps I'll probably use digitalocean or linode.  Still deciding atm. I know this is offtopic but I figure this is a great place to ask. 23:45
BionicMacwxl: Thanks! I will check them out.23:45
BionicMacwxl: All I have to be a Ubuntu member is the Ubuntu login account? What do I need to present for the discount at Gandi?23:50
acheronukKubuntu uses linode for our packaging and a KCI node. but we get that free with sponsorship. but they are good23:51
BionicMacI've had linode/digitalocean/gandi before. Really and truly they are all top shelf companies.23:51
BionicMacThose are the 3 I have narrowed it down to.23:52
BionicMacI've used VPSs at DO & Linode. Only domain and dns at Ganda.23:53
acheronukK/Ubuntu membership requires you to apply, and demonstrate sustained significant contributions to the project. typically 6 months or more, but case by case23:54
