[00:12] new to linux, generally happy with my results. The biggest issue coming from extensive mac and win use is crashing programs means crashing computer. Macs&Winss have pretty much grown out of this problem. Am I doing something wrong and missing a way to solve this? Installed on macbook 2,1 2ghz [00:13] notmacbook: Which programs? [00:16] going from memory, almost all of them come from streaming video of some kind. I may have forgotten other sources, but that is the bulk. [00:17] YT in ff, amazon video in chrome [00:18] notmacbook: probably not enough memory [00:18] these days browsers are resource hogs, no matter what operating system you're on [00:20] yea this system has 1.5 gig [00:20] that's fairly limited [00:20] but is there no way to make sure that the video only crashes the browser and I don't have to restart the whole system [00:21] lubuntu CAN run on 256MB, but not really with streaming video on a full-featured browser XD [00:21] there's no reason it should freeze the whole system [00:21] what makes you think you need to restart the whole system? [00:22] the system stops responding to all input [00:22] mouse, keyboard [00:23] how long have you waited for it? [00:24] a couple of minutes [00:25] rebooting is sometimes faster since i put a ssd in [00:25] it would probably recover over time [00:25] it might be better to just be aware you WILL have these issues and to make sure you're not using anything else when you're using such services [00:25] ill try waiting for a longer period [00:25] !info youtube-dl [00:25] youtube-dl (source: youtube-dl): downloader of videos from YouTube and other sites. In component universe, is extra. Version 2017.09.24-0.1 (artful), package size 881 kB, installed size 4954 kB [00:25] ^^^ you might try using that, too [00:26] the problem is not necessarily the playing of video, but the mechanisms to render that on a website [00:26] it is great...smtube also has been more reliabe [00:26] *reliable [00:26] i'm not sure what to tell you about amazon, as i don't really use it [00:26] i'm sure there's SOMETHING out there [00:27] meanwhile, memory's cheap. i'm sure your system could handle a little bit more and it's probably old enough you could find an electronics recycler you could get some from for cheap [00:28] True, I was just about to look at what the max is for this machine. will linux surpass that or will it be the same as osx [00:29] linux will allow you to use the maximum your motherboard will allow [00:30] maximum memory limit is hardware, not software [00:30] ^^ that [00:32] `sudo dmidecode -q -t memory | grep -A 3 'System Memory'` should give you some useful information, specifically how many slots you have and the total capacity the motherboard can handle [00:33] if you don't grep the output, it'll give you details on how the current slots are filled and with what type/speed of memory [00:33] it's kind of a big long spew, so you'll probably want to pipe it through your pager of choice [00:33] (if any of that doesn't make sense, don't hesitate to task) [00:36] thanks a bunch [00:37] np === lynn is now known as Guest11593 === Guest11593 is now known as gryphon [22:00] hi [22:05] release date of lubuntu 18.10 [22:05] What about it? [22:15] when is it [22:15] 18.10? Not decided yet. [22:16] sorry 18.04 [22:16] The 26th. [22:26] Hi there! Quick question - I'm testing out lubuntu 17.10 on a spare computer and am surprised that, despite installing gvfs-common and nfs-common (i think those wre the names), I'm unable to access NFS mounts from my LAN via pcmanfm. [22:27] I am however able to view those same mounts with `showmount`, and mount via fstab [22:27] AND pcmanfm on my other Arch machine can access nfs:// locations directly just fine [22:28] pcmanfm claims to be 1.2.5 in both cases. I've searched all the keywords i can think of, and the error message pcmanfm gives, but can't find any threads actually relevant. [22:28] Lubuntu seems to have a small and inactive IRC channel, aphirst. [22:28] Better off pretending it's Ubuntu and going to: #ubuntu. [22:28] I figured it best to ask here first all the same [22:29] fair enough, i'll go ask there [22:29] thanks [23:14] is lubuntu 18 faster than 17 [23:18] laptop: not in any recognizable way, no [23:18] i see how do i download lubuntu 18 32 bit url? [23:19] it's not out yet [23:19] there are nightlies aren't there? [23:19] release date [23:19] at least the final release is not out yet [23:19] !isitout [23:19] Not yet! [23:20] i'm patiently waiting for 18 when i will keenly roll it out onto our 2 old lightweight machines [23:20] aw jeez i thought there was a useful message there [23:20] http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/daily-live/pending/ [23:20] wxl: Fix it. ;) [23:20] is it better to wait or download this daily live [23:20] wait [23:21] you have 15 days [23:29] release date for lubuntu 32 and 64 bit [23:29] also does wine have any noticeable differenec from wndows for running games [23:57] laptop: now +15 days and none that i'm aware of. check with wine. [23:57] i am downloading it
