Guest16431Hi. The (plain) Ubuntu iso image (transferred to USB) provides an option for dual-boot installation, leaving the OEM Windows in one partition.  I'm not seeing that in the Xubuntu installer. Am I missing sth?  Thx.04:12
krytarikGuest16431: The installer is the same fwiw.04:15
Guest16431krytarik: That's not what I'm seeing.04:15
Guest16431It provides an option to partition the disk, but it shows no evidence of an existing NTFS partition.04:16
flocculantGuest16431: is this the same machine? and did you do the windows/ubuntu dual boot already on it?04:17
Guest16431I successfully installed dual-boot ubuntu/windows on this machine.  But I want Xubuntu/Windows.04:18
flocculantGuest16431: run this command in a terminal and paste the resulting url please from the live session: sudo fdisk -l |pastebinit04:19
Guest16431flocculant: http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/5S9d9s3xBq/04:21
flocculantGuest16431: you didn't successfully install a dual boot - if that's all the drives - you installed ubuntu over windows04:22
Guest16431flocculent: Ah. So it appears. Ouch.04:23
Guest16431flocculent: Thanks for taking a look.04:23
flocculantno problem04:23
flocculantwell - not problem looking for you ;)04:23
flocculantGuest16431: ftr - krytarik is correct - the installer for all the desktop *buntu's is the same04:24
Guest16431OK, leave that on the record. Along with a footnote that Guest16431 is hallucinogenic.04:27
flocculant:)04:30
Guest16431I do appreciate the help, hope you don't mind a little attitude.04:32
flocculantI didn't see any attitude04:33
Guest16431OK, then another question: I'm running fdisk 2.27.1, and I don't recognize the available partition types.  In particular where's NTFS?04:37
flocculanton the same machine?04:37
Guest16431yes04:38
flocculantthat would be the machine that you overwrote the ntfs partition with the ubuntu install then ...04:39
Guest16431It gives options for "Microsoft reserved", "Microsoft basic data", etc.04:39
Guest16431Now I'm trying to repartition the disk, will re-install Win10 on a small NTFS parttion.04:39
flocculantthat's probably the EFI partition04:39
Guest16431Sorry, I wasn't clear:04:40
flocculantoic04:40
Guest16431Not looking at an existing partition table. I'm creating a new one. But I want to create an NTFS partition.04:40
flocculantaah right - not sure what partition type numbers are in fdisk - I tend to gparted :)04:40
Guest16431My recollection was that was an option in fdisk. But it seems they've changed the names and numbers. (Or I'm still hallucinating.)04:41
Guest16431Ah, good idea.04:41
Guest16431Trying gparted...04:41
flocculantdon't touch the efi partition04:41
Guest16431K, thx for the tip.04:42
flocculantGuest16431: nor /dev/sda2 - not sure what that is - but suspect something to do with efi install04:44
Guest16431Gparted is very handy! FTR (as long as we're maintaining one) it seems that NTFS == "Microsoft basic data".04:48
flocculantok - thought it might be, but not sure enough to break your partitioning ;)04:49
Guest16431OK, now I'm stuck at the same place. Don't want to screw it up again:  I'm at the "Installation type" window (similar to this: https://itsfoss.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Install_Ubuntu_Windows_Dual_Boot_5.jpeg).  How do I tell the installer to work on /dev/sda3 (my ext4 partition) and not overwrite the entire disk?04:54
Guest16431(Picture is only illustrative, that's not my partition table.)04:54
Guest16431Is the "Device for boot loader installation" the same thing as the 'partition that Guest16431 wants to install Xubuntu on' ... ?04:56
flocculantno04:56
flocculantI'm short on time now - so quickly - did you create an ntfs AND linux partition in gparted?04:57
Guest16431yes04:57
Guest16431both visible in my new partition table, along with efi and ext2.04:57
flocculantok - so select the partition you want to install to - then use it from there - might need to right click to use the partition and set up mount point etc04:59
Guest16431Ah, just select? I tried to make it too hard. Here goes..04:59
Guest16431...04:59
flocculantthe Device for boot loader - is exactly that - the bootloader not the os05:00
flocculantgtg now - time to sort out the day05:00
Guest16431Thanks for the help05:00
flocculantnp - real life wakes up now :p05:05
