lirodonOkay, so my friend is installing 16.04, but the installer's stuck on "Detecting file systems"04:50
well_laid_lawnlirodon:  how long has it been stuck?04:53
lirodon10+ minutes. She's instaalling it to a hard drive from USB media.04:53
well_laid_lawna terabyte can take a bit of time to sus out04:53
flocculanttakes a while here with 2 2Tb drives, 1 3Tb drive and the ssd it's installing on04:54
flocculantcertainly takes a whole lot longer to do that than the actual install04:54
well_laid_lawnso... how large are the hard drives ?04:54
lirodonthough at the bottom of the log it was mentioning starting cleanup of temporary directories04:55
lirodonand it hasn't been doing anything04:56
well_laid_lawnsounds like it is nearly installed then04:58
lirodonokay, she ended up rebooting ... and it appears to have not even done anything to her drive05:06
lirodonbecause Windows XP still loaded.05:06
well_laid_lawnthere should be an entry in the boot menu for checking the install media - tried that ?05:09
lirodonthink we figured it out. at some point, Thunar had automatically mounted and opened up her Windows file system05:14
lirodonand I forgot to mention that we had an error about it not being able to unmount it. Restarted the install but with just Install Xubuntu (without loading XFCE in the BG), and now it's working05:15
flocculantit should have given a warning, something like 'do you want us to try and unmount /dev/blah'05:15
flocculantaah right05:15
lirodonyeah. we got that, we tried, and it didn't. And then it got stuck and didn't even get to partitioning05:16
lirodonbut now we're actually cooking05:16
flocculantwould have got you different responses from well_laid_lawn and me if we'd known that :D05:16
lirodonanyway, she's got it going now!05:33
well_laid_lawnwell done05:34
well_laid_lawnxubuntu does look good in blue ;)05:34
lirodonoptiplex 745, originally came with XP from a slight refurbish05:37
lirodonhad to tell her, who had only just started using this computer, that XP was unsupported and you shouldn't use it05:37
well_laid_lawnthat was a good thing to do05:39
lirodonshe's slowly figuring things out05:57
well_laid_lawnit doesn't take too much to adapt to using ubbuntu - some things are named differently but it is still a mouse and icons based interface05:59
lirodonespecially for someone who had never heard of Linux before at all06:00
lirodonuntil yesterday or so06:01
well_laid_lawnusing xubuntu is probably easier than the switch to a mac06:02
lirodonokay she got an error about failing to retrieve repository information when trying to use the updater06:20
well_laid_lawnis the network working ? ou can google ?06:20
well_laid_lawns/ou/you/06:21
lirodonher chromium install from earlier worked06:22
well_laid_lawn!repos06:23
ubottuThe packages in Ubuntu are divided into several sections. More information at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories - See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RecommendedSources for the recommended way to set up your repositories.06:23
well_laid_lawnsee if the last link above helps06:24
well_laid_lawn!bot06:24
ubottuHi! I'm #xubuntu's favorite infobot. You can search my brain at https://ubottu.com/factoids.cgi | General info and channels at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Bots | Make a clone of me, see !botclone06:24
lirodonShe just got the "Check your internet connection" version of that error06:24
well_laid_lawnthe default repos should be working - which is why I thought it might be a networking issue06:25
lirodonshe was having weird internet issues with XP earlier. at one point, some sites were loading and some weren't. at another time, in Chrome, things suddenly worked again (and she was able to download all the stuff she needed for the install)06:26
well_laid_lawngenerally speaking intermitent issues are mostly hardware related - check cables and open a terminal with   dmesg -w    running to see any errors06:28
well_laid_lawnsoftware just keeps working the same06:28
lirodonwait I got her to do apt-get update on command line and she's getting that libappstream3 error06:41
well_laid_lawntry   sudo apt install --reinstall libappstream306:53
lirodonit worked06:54
well_laid_lawnwell done06:54

IhrFusselIs PAE also required if I use the 64-bit version of Xubuntu? It doesn't mention "only for 32-bit" anywhere on this page https://xubuntu.org/requirements/15:37
IhrFusselTo me it looks like someone forgot to mention "32-bit" in that sentence15:41
geniiPAE is 32bit specific16:06
geniiIt's implicit16:06
IhrFusselgenii, then it should mention that PAE is only needed for 32-bit ... it doesn't do that16:08
IhrFusselNot sure if there are 64-bit CPUs without PAE but if so it would be misleading16:08
GridCubeIhrFussel: pae is an extension to make 32bit processor able to use memory better, but it's embebed in 64bit hardware as far as i understand, it's soemting 64bit does by default16:09
IhrFusselGridCube, that doesn't change the fact that this sentence is misleading "Your processor needs to support PAE in order to run Xubuntu."16:10
IhrFusselWill it really not run on 32-bit with less than 3.5 GB RAM? Usually it should16:11
IhrFusselI mean without PAE*16:11
GridCubeyes16:11
GridCubeit will not run on a processor without PAE16:11
geniiThe 32bit kernel is compiled by default with Physical Address Extensions enabled, at some point in the past it was not16:12
geniiSomewhere around 14.04, perhaps16:12
IhrFusselOn a 32-bit CPU without PAE* ... but it should at least mention the "32-bit" bit in that sentence, don't you agree?16:12
GridCubeno16:13
geniiSince 64bit CPUs don't have PAE, the author likely didn't bother specifying16:13
* genii wanders off to eat kebabs now16:14
GridCubebut i agree that it could be edited to say "Your processor needs to be 33bit with PAE enabled or 64bits in order to run Xubuntu." or something like that16:14
GridCubeif only to make things clearer16:15
IhrFusselgenii, my 64-bit CPU has PAE16:18
IhrFusselAt least I find it under /proc/cpuinfo16:20
GridCubeyes, because it's part of it's architecture16:21
IhrFusselSo can one assume *every* 64-bit CPU will have PAE listed in its features? Then the sentence is maybe not so wrong16:22
genii64 bit CPUs are theoretically capable of addressing up to 256 terabytes of RAM by using either 48 or 42bit addressing extensions, which is built-in to it's die. 32 bit PAE extends to 36 bits which allows to 64G16:28
DanniBettsIn Thunar is it possible to disable the "Delete file" entry so that files are always deleted via trash? Otherwise a user can accidentally delete a file permanently and not be able to recover it from trash16:52
ubuntu_ftw Hello, all. I just set up a manually partitioned encrypted xubuntu install. I had to create the encrypted partitions manually, or the installer failed. So at this point everything installed fine, but I cannot boot because the root partition cannot be mounted (booting drops me to a busybox shell)19:34
ubuntu_ftwhow do I tell grub to mount my encrypted partitions?19:34
ubuntu_ftwIf it helps, this is my partitioning scheme: https://imgur.com/a/bbk5FAs19:35
krytarik(Crossposting from #ubuntu)19:40
torvAm I right in understanding the current daily builds are to be considered as release candidates now?19:54
krytarikNot yet.19:55
geniikrytarik: release schedule shows yesterday as RC19:59
krytarikYes, it does..19:59
flocculantgenii: due over th weekend19:59
geniiflocculant: Ah, thanks19:59
flocculant"We will shut down cronjobs and spin some RC images late Friday or early20:00
flocculantSaturday once the archive and proposed-migration have settled a bit,"20:00
flocculantdevel-announce list20:00
* genii makes a note to read those more often20:01
flocculant:p20:01
genii..actually i think I'm only on the kubuntu-devel ml20:01
* torv too ^20:01
flocculantgenii: could also ask me :D20:01
torvThanks.20:01
flocculanttorv: welcome20:01
flocculanttorv: as a matter of course when it get's to RC I would be asking for people to test on both our mailing lists20:02
torvPerfect fit: I'll test then. Please notify on here/~-devel too.20:06
flocculanttorv: I don't mention in this channel - it's for support, but you'd need to be blind to not see me boring people to distraction in -devel :p20:11
torvflocculant: x) Alright20:13
flocculanttorv: not expecting much to change between now and whne they spin the images up to be honest ;)20:15
torvflocculant: yeah, I thought so too. I am about to setup some new machines and thought to myself "release is close..wait? rc!..worst case I'll be doing some testing along but can't be to bad at this stage"20:18
flocculantwell - it's up to you - but from my point of view - I would miss the information at the iso tracker20:19
flocculantand if there's not enough of that - I might not mark it ready for release20:19
flocculantand if no-one else from the release team is around then we'll release late20:19
torvjust finding my way into that ;)20:22
flocculantwhen there is an RC it will be shown there on http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/20:23
torvThanks.20:28
xubuntu068hello20:43
xubuntu068have an old nvidia 3d card ,,, 9590 I think it's called ... but I have difficulties getting the drivers in :(20:45
well_laid_lawn!nvidia20:50
ubottuFor nvidia and matrox graphics cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VideoDriverHowto . For AMD/ATI graphics cards, see « /msg ubottu ati » and « /msg ubottu fglrxmissing »20:50
geniiHeh, matrox21:31
SlidingHorn(crossposting from xfce) I'm having an issue where I cannot get xfce to fully load...the panel either doesn't load at all (most often) or it shows up, and is unresponsive.  if I Ctl+alt+t on my primary screen (where the panel would be) I cannot see the terminal, but it's "there" and commands work. if I ctl+alt+t on the secondary, screen, the terminal is visible.  What can I look for to diagnose the23:34
SlidingHornproblem here?23:34
