BluesKajHi folks10:24
ryks31792hello.have issue to install kubuntu on win 1010:24
ryks31792maded all the partitions corectly10:25
ryks31792but doesn t start10:25
ryks31792on boot ot s jumps directly to 1010:25
BluesKajryks31792, installed Kubuntu beside W10? Did you disable secure and fast boot in the UEFI/BIOS?10:29
IrcsomeBot<SanathShetty> @ryks31792, You need to set the boot order10:44
IrcsomeBot<SanathShetty> You can load  kubuntu by entering BIOS10:45
ryks31792no11:23
ryks31792i didn t11:23
BluesKajdidn't what?11:24
ryks31792from the grub menu when i click kubuntu ,it s take me to win 1011:24
ryks31792if i remamner well in ubuntu ,has a option -says install ubuntu side by side with win 1011:26
ryks31792kubuntu does nt have that chioce11:26
Kon-ryks31792, to configure a dual boot with Windows, it's best to arrange your disk partitions yourself11:26
ryks31792i did11:27
ryks31792googled on youtube11:27
ryks31792i will try again11:27
ryks31792i miss linux11:27
ryks31792ok,must go .see you soon on the other side i  hope11:28
Kon-I thought the "side by side" option automatically created a single partition and added an MBR entry11:31
Kon-I don't know if that would work properly on UEFI11:32
BluesKajKon-, it used to , but since UEFI/Bios the /boot UEFI partiton has replaced it11:32
Kon-Cool, that keeps it easy. But I'd still never trust an installer to autosize my partitions11:34
BluesKajalso depends on your BIOS. ...my MSI mobo has a hybrid which can use either UEFI/GPT or BIOS /dos..very cool11:34
BluesKajyeah , i always prepartition , then use maunual partitioning during the install11:35
austin316Hi all. just trying out the RC for 18.04. Is any there any way to make GTK emacs work with the global menu applet? The menus show up within the window.11:37
BluesKajhowever the auto-install did work properly on my laptop with UEFI/GPT11:38
BluesKajaustin316, GTK emacs inb kubuntu?  why?11:39
Kon-I was going to be nice and not say anything, but my thoughts exactly11:39
Kon-Kubuntu doesn't seem like the type of distro I'd associate with a hardcore emacs user11:40
austin316BluesKaj: emacs doesn't support Qt. It's a GTk (or terminal) application11:41
austin316Kon-: "hardcore", lol. it's a text editor.11:41
Kon-I use Kate :)11:41
BluesKajaustin316, yes I understand that, but are you on Kubuntu or Ubuntu , seems you might want to ask that question in #ubuntu11:42
Kon-I think he's in Kubuntu and emacs isn't working as expected with global menu in Plasma11:43
austin316Kon-: yes exactly11:43
quaruYeah, ut I imagine a lot of people in here won't know.  :p11:44
diogenes_austin316, send as a screenshot of it11:44
BluesKajwhoa, i don't even see emacs in the Bionic menu11:46
BluesKajMost users use Kate afaik, emacs is foreign to most home users I think11:49
* diogenes_ uses gedit with all the appropriate extensions11:49
austin316diogenes_: here's a screenshot https://imgur.com/a/TWtAZFa11:50
austin316diogenes_: it's not that dire :) I was just wondering if this was an known bug.11:51
diogenes_austin316, I guess that kind of global menu does not support emacs11:53
=== andre is now known as Guest60707
=== Guest60707 is now known as AndreeeCZ
BluesKajit's odd austin316, I recall emacs in the kmenu, but it's no longer there, obviously not installed by default either12:14
austin316BluesKaj: it's in Discover. A full install of emacs is around 100MB, so it's not suprising it wouldn't come by default.12:18
* BluesKaj nods12:19
austin316*facepalm* it's not just emacs, it's all GTK programs. Shows how extensive KDE is :P12:36
austin31618.04 will have 5.12 version of Plasma, and it seems 5.13 will add support for GTK in appmenu.12:36
Kon-austin316, now that you mention it, I believe that's correct12:40
Kon-Global menu is a relatively recent feature in its own right12:40
BluesKajyes, Bionic has plasma 5.12 ..I'm running it12:41
Kon-You can get the bleeding edge Plasma version in Kubuntu with the Kubuntu backports PPA12:41
Kon-https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/ubuntu/backports12:41
austin316Kon-: I'll have to add that to my list of things to try.12:42
austin316thanks12:42
Kon-I was going to tell him that beta doesn't hit for another 3 weeks12:44
BluesKajhe seems quite knowledgeable and on top of things, so I'm sure he's aware of the Bionic release date12:46
BluesKajKon-, what beta?12:47
BluesKajthe release date is actually in 3 days afaik12:48
Kon-Plasma 5.12.95, the beta for 5.1312:48
BluesKajI see12:48
Kon-The feature he wants is new in 5.1312:48
BluesKajwell, it's not new...it's just back12:49
CoJaBoSo, I installed the beta. So far, it's less buggy than 17.10 stable =D14:06
CoJaBoDisplay is only modestly corrupt with the nouvaeue driver, which made the install quite a large number of times easier lol14:07
CoJaBomain bug so far is there is still no sound support :/14:09
kab0mHi together :)14:25
BluesKajCoJaBo,which audio chip?14:26
kab0mAs i am new to kubuntu/linux i just wondered if just install the 18.04 Beta 2 if i can then simply just update to the final lts release when its out at 26th of april or if i have to do some magic tricks or reinstall the system to get from the beta to the lts later on?14:27
CoJaBoBluesKaj: 00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation CM238 HD Audio Controller (rev 31)14:27
bodirokab0m: Install 18.04. beta, it will automatically update to the final version.14:28
kab0mNice, i thank you very much for the info bodiro ;)14:28
BluesKajkab0m, just keep updating/upgrading and the final release will be automatically installed14:28
bodirokab0m: your're welcome14:29
CoJaBokab0m: FWIW, for some reason, the "download updates" option in the installer didn't seem to download updates during installation; I had to do it manually afterwards. Not really a problem, just remember to do that on first boot14:29
kab0mperfect :) i really looking forward how linux will change my life. have a nice day everyone14:29
BluesKajCoJaBo, ok, open alsamixer in the konsole and disable automute on the far right for starters14:30
CoJaBoBluesKaj: didn't see to do anything; what does that do, and does it take effect immediately or does it need something else?14:32
BluesKajCoJaBo, use the left/right arrow keys to navigate in alsamixer, the up down arrow keys to disable/enable the automute control14:34
CoJaBoBluesKaj: It shows disabled, but nothing seemed to happen14:34
BluesKajthen run sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel, and reboot14:35
CoJaBoBluesKaj: It looks like that's mainly for headphones tho?14:36
BluesKajno, it's for all the audio outpts14:37
CoJaBoBluesKaj: This is the bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/167282214:37
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1672822 in pulseaudio (Ubuntu) "sound only coming from left speaker on acer predator (fresh install)" [Undecided,Invalid]14:37
BluesKajCoJaBo, just run the above command and reboot, believe me14:39
CoJaBoBluesKaj: Is that specfic to that card? And if so, will it break automatically muting when headphones are plugged in?14:39
BluesKajno, the autmute is enabled by default to prevent accidental overloading of your sound devices when booting your pc14:41
BluesKajand your ears :-)14:41
BluesKajwhen booting the pc for the first time after a new install14:43
yawylnhlyhey how do you enable beta updates? like you could in the ubuntu software settings.14:44
BluesKajjust update and upgrtade normally if you run Bionic14:45
BluesKajin kubuntu it's called discover14:46
yawylnhlyyeah is there such an option there?14:46
BluesKajsoftware center14:46
BluesKajare yolu on Bionic?, then updating and upgrading will bring you to whatever level the repos are at14:48
yawylnhlyyep im on bionic.. thx :)14:48
BluesKajright14:48
CoJaBoBluesKaj: AFAICT, it doesn't do anything; is there a page saying it should fix output on this card?14:49
BluesKajyawylnhly, there's a freeze on atm, normal for the week before the official release14:50
BluesKajwhat doesn't do anything, CoJaBo?14:51
CoJaBoBluesKaj: Changing that setting; the problem remains14:51
BluesKajhave you turned up the controls in alsmixer and pavucontrol ?14:51
yawylnhlyright.. btw why is qupzilla called falkon?14:51
CoJaBoBluesKaj: In my case, I don't even get actual "sound" thru the subwoofer, mostly just static and clicking; which is probably because the volume is wrong for output to a subwoofer14:52
BluesKajyawylnhly, no idea14:52
BluesKajCoJaBo, did you check the controls like I mentioned?14:53
CoJaBoBluesKaj: Yes14:53
yawylnhlyah its called falkon now I guess lol: There will be no more QupZilla releases, please switch to Falkon.14:54
BluesKajmake sure there's no MM in the boxes at the bottom, that means muted, CoJaBo14:54
BluesKajin alsamixer14:55
CoJaBoBluesKaj: It's not muted; it's trying to output sound to something that isn't a normal speaker14:55
CoJaBoBluesKaj: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/167282214:55
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1672822 in pulseaudio (Ubuntu) "sound only coming from left speaker on acer predator (fresh install)" [Undecided,Invalid]14:55
yawylnhlyim not sure i understood properly, but I think you should make the right thing the default speaker @cojabo14:56
CoJaBoyawylnhly: That's the bug; there's no way to change that14:56
BluesKajCoJaBo, that's for 16.10 are you using 16.10?14:57
CoJaBoBluesKaj: Problem remains in 17.10 and 18.0414:57
BluesKajI have the same intel driver, don't opbsess about an old bug that probly doesn't apply anymore14:58
BluesKajI don't have it14:58
CoJaBoBluesKaj: what does it show as in lspci for you?14:58
BluesKajshow me yours firrst14:58

CoJaBoBluesKaj: 00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation CM238 HD Audio Controller (rev 31)14:59
CoJaBoThere's a Realtek driver it's possible to load and hack, that will redirect sound to one of the rear channels, but the sound quality is still poor, mono, and it completely breaks headphones, so it's actually worse than the default one :/15:01
CoJaBo..wow. this version of vlc can seek. this is amazing15:04
BluesKajrealtek uses the intel chip and driver ..now how are you connecting and what audio devices are connecting?15:07
CoJaBoBluesKaj: It's an Acer Predator 17 laptop, 4.1 builtin speakers15:09
CoJaBoBluesKaj: It works fine with headphones, but the internal speakers are not usable at all due to the bug.15:09
BluesKajoh laptop audio is even worse on linux than regular pcs ...I should have asked sooner15:11
CoJaBoThis is the only one I've ever had sound issues with :/15:11
CoJaBoIronically, this is the first laptop I've had where I *didn't* have wifi issues <_<15:12
BluesKajI don't even bother with the speakers on my laptop , just plugin a regular set of pc speakers , so i have no experience with that'15:12
CoJaBoI'm trying to get bluetooth ones to work, considering that bug is likely to never be fixed, but I can't for the life of me seem to get them to stay connected15:13
CoJaBoTried 2 different speakers, and even borrowed some bluetooth headphones. It connects, but as soon as they're turned off or even left idle for a bit, they lose all track of pairing. Stupid..15:14
CoJaBoAnyway.. is there a way I can check to make sure automatic updates is off? It defaulted to on in 17.10, which breaks things horrificly; I can't remember where the setting is tho15:15
BluesKajit's called unattended upgrades, but it's essentail to update/upgrade afew times /wk if you uninstall that15:18
BluesKajfor security updates/upgrades15:18
CoJaBoSince it requires a reboot, I need to do it manually; I can't just have the system randomly break without warning while I'm using it lol15:19
CoJaBoThere was a setting to just turn it off, but I suppose uninstalling it is fine too and probably easier anyway..15:20
BluesKajBBL15:20
tnsshello15:40
tnssI am excited for 18.0415:40
CoJaBoJust installed it on my laptop15:46
CoJaBowas planning to wait to final, but somehow my 17.10 install got ruined this morning <_<15:47
tnsseh, my laptop has a damaged female charger port, and will take 1-3 weeks (they didn't say whether or not they were business days, if they are, then it would be 2-3 weeks, if not, 1-2 weeks. I might get Kubuntu 18.04 LTS when I get it back15:48
tnssI have a Dell Inspiron 15 5566 with a Core i3 2.3 GHz, 6 GB DDR4 RAM, a touch screen, resolution of 1366x768, and integrated Intel HD Graphics 62015:49
tnssI bet everyone who is on this IRC that uses Kubuntu would use the kubuntu-backports PPA15:51
tnssI saw the Kubuntu 18.04 LTS Second Beta15:52
tnssand the KDE Plasma desktop looks more custom15:52
tnssit comes with a custom "Kubuntu" workplace theme, that is less of the stock "Breeze" Theme, and more Breeze Dark15:53
tnssso for the next 10 days I am stuck with an old Compaq Presario CQ61 laptop15:56
tnssIt has 2 GB RAM, has an AMD64 (it is really AMD) AMD Athlon II M320 Processor, with a resolution of 1366x76815:57
CoJaBoThe dark theme looks really nice16:01
CoJaBoIt's actually possible to tell which tabs are selected16:02
tnssyeah16:02
CoJaBoAnd the clock is readable16:02
tnssif only it had GTK integration (Firefox would match with the titlebar, instead of being white16:02
CoJaBoAlso, the main menu logo doesn't default to some stupid swirly thing like 17.10 did16:03
tnssand it works better with apps than GNOME's Adwaita Dark, which can cause appearance problems with Firefox16:03
CoJaBoThe file-section dialog for gtk is still horribly awful16:04
tnssRemember when KDE SC 4 was the most resource-hungriest DE out of all of them16:05
tnsseven more than GNOME 3 and Unity16:05
CoJaBoI've never had problems with the main DE part being bloated. All the extra apps suck to have to remove/disable, but hey there's finally a minimal install16:06
CoJaBoOnly thing I had to disable was search16:06
tnssyou can see when you are transferring files in Nautilus with the Ambiance theme in Ubuntu 17.10 that it looks white at first16:06
tnssand gnome-sushi doesn't really look well on Ubuntu either16:07
CoJaBoI don't think I've used the file manager since KDE4 beta16:07
tnssUbuntu Studio is essentially a bloated Xubuntu with extra modifications16:07
CoJaBoI don't even remember what the name of it is anymore lol16:08
CoJaBoAlso, egads does xubuntu (xfce, whatever) suck <_<16:08
tnssit was called either d3lphin or Konqueror16:09
tnssthe kde community doesn't really support konqueror anymore, at least until Kubuntu 14.04's support ends16:10
CoJaBoKonqueror sucked.16:11
tnssyeah16:11
tnssit is just as bad as Epiphany16:11
CoJaBoGlad they switched back to firefox lol16:11
tnsswhy does elementary even use it16:12
CoJaBosaves one more app having to manually install every single time16:12
tnssonce their users figure out that they can't do much wiith it16:12
CoJaBoI hate that so many things do stuff when scrolled over in KDE16:13
CoJaBoThat's my main annoyance with the default settings16:13
acheronukCoJaBo: the stupid swirly thing is still there in the stock plasma themes, but I decided to replace it with the old 'K' gear for Kubuntu's16:13
CoJaBoacheronuk: Because the swirly thing sucks? :P16:13
acheronukand the K could be KDE, but could be Kubuntu16:14
tnssthe other thing i hate is that in order to actually game by enabling the touchpad while typing, i needed to install the xf86-synaptics-touchpad drivers16:14
tnssand remove the libinput ones16:14
CoJaBoI'm very happy its a K as default, because I was too lazy to change it myself on 17.1016:14
tnssand apparently the changes don't work until you reboot16:14
diogenes_tnss, it's not advisable to remove libinput16:15
diogenes_you just install synaptic and it will use it16:15
CoJaBoLibinput sucks.16:15
tnssoh, sory16:15
tnssmy computer doesn't work well with them16:15
CoJaBoIt can't middle-click on mine16:15
diogenes_CoJaBo, it might suck but nevertheless it's the future and synaptic is legacy already16:15
CoJaBodiogenes_: Would've thought that would be fixed by now, it's been a year :/16:16
tnsssure it is outdated, but it works better than libinput16:16
tnssfor me at least16:16
diogenes_agree, synaptic works better for me too16:16
CoJaBoSound has been broken now for 3 years on this chipset. Linux distros still don't care about laptop support :/16:16
diogenes_CoJaBo, I would not blame linux devs16:17
diogenes_I'd blame the manufacturers16:17
tnssexcept Ubuntu, they spoil Dell16:17
diogenes_they don't care about their customers freedom16:17
diogenes_I mean the manufacturers^^^16:17
tnssI think Dell only provides support for Ubuntu 14.04 and (ironically) 15.0416:18
tnssi checked the drivers page16:18
diogenes_just buy yourself a system76 and you gonna have everything boringly working just fine16:18
tnssexcept Pop!_OS kinda gives me a eyesore16:19
tnssbye16:19
diogenes_no one forced you to use pop os :)16:19
BluesKajwhat laptops need is simple well designed analog audio output stage16:21
ZetFurydoes kubuntu release its lts same date as regular ubuntu?16:43
IrcsomeBot<acheronuk> yes16:44
BluesKajall flavours16:48
ZetFuryok thx16:49
