themoonisshiningok I upgraded to 16.04 on the ubuntu server laptop but pcmcica cardbus usb2.0 card still no work there is a description00:13
themoonisshiningusb2.0 card still no work there is a device descriptor read/64 error -11000:14
themoonisshiningcode anyone?00:14
themoonisshiningthis doesn't happen on the dell pentium 3 laptop with xubuntu 16.0500:15
themoonisshining0400:15
sere_themoonisshining: does yours system support 64bit?00:17
themoonisshiningsere_: none of the two laptops do they're pentium 3 and 400:18
pragmaticenigmathemoonisshining, it is entirely possible the PCMCIA slot is damaged... are you able to test other cards in it?00:19
compdoc"device descriptor read/64, error -110 means that USB port power supply was exceeded."00:19
pragmaticenigmacompdoc, good catch00:19
themoonisshiningpragmaticenigma: yes I can try00:19
compdoctry a powered usb hub00:20
pragmaticenigmathemoonisshining, did you see what compdoc mentioned... Does the device connected to the USB card have it's own power supply?00:20
themoonisshiningcompdoc: there is a dongle that suposely connects to the usb1.0 port from that card00:20
themoonisshiningbut I dont'use it nor on the laptop that works00:21
themoonisshiningpragmaticenigma: the dongle? could be00:21
themoonisshiningI also read on dmesg it couldn't power it before but since it works on 1 laptop I figure it will work on this one00:21
sere_themoonisshining: BIOS / Peripherals to Enable IOMMU read this might help now sure though00:22
compdocits a pci card with usb ports?00:24
compdocoh, you said laptop00:25
pragmaticenigmacompdoc, the first00:25
themoonisshiningdon't know its a pccard with usb2.0 ports00:27
compdocpccard, right00:29
compdochavent seen those in a while00:29
Miguel2013I'm here on another pc I'm gonna read this about immo00:30
Miguel2013i guess I know now why it doesn't work on windows xp either00:30
compdocxp? yikes. you shouldnt be using that00:31
Miguel2013compdoc, i can't run 7 on this laptop with a 1gb of ram00:33
compdocjust so dangerous browsing with it. easy to infect00:34
Miguel2013I won't get online then00:35
akkAnyone good with grub and UEFI? I just installed Xenial to an Asus 1015e (UEFI, but came with Ubuntu preinstalled)00:35
akkand on reboot, I'm stuck in "error: file not found. grub rescue>"00:35
Miguel2013anyway I connected the usb cable from the usb2.0 card to the usb1.1 port and it still gives me this error00:36
lotuspsychjeakk: singleboot?00:37
akklotuspsychje: There's also a debian partition but I don't care about it, would be happy to get anything booting.00:37
akk(did I interpret your question right?)00:37
lotuspsychjeakk: doublecheck if you have secureboot and fastboot disabled00:38
akklotuspsychje: How do I check? I haven't been able to find anything like that in the bios menus.00:38
lotuspsychjeakk: if its an uefi machine, those settings should be there mate, legacy/uefi00:39
lotuspsychje!uefi | akk00:39
ubottuakk: UEFI is a specification that defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware. It is meant as a replacement for the BIOS. For information on how to set up and install Ubuntu and its derivatives on UEFI machines please read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI00:39
akklotuspsychje: I think it's EFI because occasionally things related to EFI show up, e.g. when I boot off a USB stick, one of the entries for it in the BIOS boot menu has "EFI" in the name.00:40
akkBut I've never been entirely clear on it.00:41
lotuspsychjeakk: well for ubuntu singleboot, try disable fastboot and secureboot..reinstall of ubuntu might be needed changing settings00:41
akklotuspsychje: Disable it how?00:41
lotuspsychjeakk: like i said, if your machine is uefi you can enter settings right?00:42
akklotuspsychje: Enter settings where? I've been through all the BIOS menus multiple times and don't see anything.00:42
lotuspsychjeakk: ok, whats your pc brand please?00:42
akkAsus 1015e00:43
lotuspsychjeholdon lemme check00:43
akkIt came with ubuntu preinstalled, which might possibly mean that they disabled some of the UEFI secure boot stuff.00:43
lotuspsychjeakk: you bought it this way, or someone made it?00:45
akkI bought it this way, new.00:45
akkIt was an option Asus offered on this model (quite a few years ago).00:45
lotuspsychjeakk: wich ubuntu came on that?00:46
akkI don't remember ... let me check when I got it.00:47
lotuspsychjeakk: nvm, wich ubuntu do you run now?00:47
akkXenial is what I just tried to install.00:48
akkfrom a netboot iso00:48
akkWhen I got to the install-grub stage I expected questions about UEFI but it didn't ask any and didn't give any errors.00:49
lotuspsychjeakk: your manual says F2 to enter bios settings00:49
akkyes, it's f200:49
lotuspsychjeakk: TAB boot is where you can disable fastboot00:50
akkI can enter the bios, there's just nothing there about secure boot.00:50
akkIn the Boot tab, I have: Boot Configuration, which has one item, Launch PCE OpROM; then Boot Option Priorities (that's the boot order, just the internal HD);00:51
akkthen submenus Add New Boot Option and Delete Boot Option.00:51
lotuspsychjeakk: windows boot manager enabled?00:52
akkI don't know, how would I tell?00:52
akkThere's nothing about that on this screen.00:52
lotuspsychjehmm00:52
akkI can take a photo of the screen if it would help.00:52
lotuspsychjeakk: you dont see fastboot or launch csm?00:53
akkNope.00:53
lotuspsychjeakk: page 65 http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeePC/1015E/E_eManual_1015E_VER7770.pdf?_ga=2.266025103.1013258644.1524444260-1792275937.152444426000:53
akkJust Launch PXE OpROM (which is disabled, but enabling it doesn't change anything).00:53
akkI don't have Driver Option Priorities there.00:54
AuroraAvenueakk, is that you Stuart Langridge ??00:55
akkAnd Boot Option Priorities only has one entry: [ubuntu (PO ST320LT...]00:55
akkAuroraAvenue: no, don't know Stuart.00:55
akkIf I put the cursor on Boot Option #1 (that ubuntu entry) and hit return, the menu I get offers a choice of that or Disabled.00:56
lotuspsychjeakk: hmm weird00:58
lotuspsychjeakk: no other settings at all on tab boot?00:58
akknope, just what I listed above.00:59
akkOh, btw, if I put the cursor over "Add New Boot Option" the help on the right says "Add a new EFI boot option to the boot order"00:59
akkso I'm thinking it is EFI00:59
lotuspsychjeakk: doublecheck all tabs for fastboot, csm, legacy00:59
=== Menzador97 is now known as Menzie
akkI've been through them all at least 5 times, not seeing anything.01:00
lotuspsychjeok mate01:00
lotuspsychjeakk: can you still access grub?01:00
akkThe word "Legacy" occasionally shows up in the help, e.g. for Launch PXE OpROM the help says "Controls the execution of Legacy PXE OpROM" (thanks for clearing that up, Asus)01:00
akklotuspsychje: If I boot, I end up in "error: file not found.\ngrub rescue>"01:01
akkI'm not sure if that's actually grub or not.01:01
lotuspsychjeakk: what i surely would try is burn ubuntu on a stick and try the F12 install01:01
lotuspsychjeakk: so we cant rescue grub and cant install right now01:02
akkWhat's different about the F12 install?01:03
akkAnd would it help if I had a shell? I can probably get to a shell using rescue mode.01:03
lotuspsychjeakk: well its justas a test, to see if it would pickup the stick01:03
lotuspsychjeakk: yeah try grub recoverymode01:03
akkI can definitely boot from a usb stick.01:03
lotuspsychjeakk: perhaps we can rescue old ubuntu somehow01:03
akkThe old ubuntu is definitely gone -- I didn't like the partitioning so I changed all the partitions.01:04
lotuspsychjeakk: at wich point things got wrong exactly?01:04
akkI've been running with this laptop for years with not enough disk space because the partitioning was wonky.01:04
akkSo I finally decided it was time to risk a reinstall/repartition.01:05
lotuspsychjeakk: and how did you do that?01:05
akkUp until now the grub it was booting from was the one from an LTS from 5-6 years ago, whichever one that was.01:05
lotuspsychjeakk: sounds like a 12.04?01:06
akklotuspsychje: Made a netboot ISO, dd'ed it to a usb stick, booted off the stick and followed the install prompts.01:06
akkYeah, 12.04 sounds right.01:06
akkSo that may be the grub that's still there on the disk; I suspect update-grub didn't actually write a new one though I'm not sure.01:06
akkHmm, is there a way to get a version number from the grub rescue prompt?01:07
lotuspsychjeakk: sure: lsb_release -a01:07
akkUnknown command `lsb_release'01:07
oerheksif ubuntu is the only OS, i would disable secureboot on that machine01:08
lotuspsychjeoerheks: he cant find the option01:08
akkoerheks: I'd love to if you could tell me how.01:08
akk(she, not that it matters)01:08
lotuspsychjeoh my bad01:08
lotuspsychjeakk: try a regular 16.04 latest iso to burn on usb and F1201:09
lotuspsychjeakk: maybe we get lucky to override the old leftover01:09
lotuspsychjeoerheks: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeePC/1015E/E_eManual_1015E_VER7770.pdf?_ga=2.266025103.1013258644.1524444260-1792275937.152444426001:10
lotuspsychjeah now i can recall, maybe that was ubuntu remix netbooks01:10
akklotuspsychje: The only reason I'm hesitating is that I have a fairly slow net connection, hesitant to download a full ISO01:11
akk(frustratingly, I have a xenial USB stick already but I loaned it to a friend and he hasn't given it back yet)01:11
lotuspsychjeakk: ah yes i understand, perhaps steal a faster wifi for grabbing iso?01:11
lotuspsychjeakk: did you try grub recovery?01:12
lotuspsychjewant to know if we can still get in01:12
akklotuspsychje: try it how? I've been trying typing ls <various things> in grub rescue, but so far all I've gotten is "error: unknown filesystem".01:13
lotuspsychjeakk: you can drop to a rootshell with network?01:13
akkaha, ls (hd0,gpt5)/ actually lists the root filesystem01:13
akklotuspsychje: Yes, I'm pretty sure I can get that.01:14
akkIf there was some kind of update-grub command I could run, maybe in verbose mode so I could see what it was doing ...01:15
akkI haven't been having much luck googling for commandline fixes for grub/efi problems, though.01:15
lotuspsychjeakk: see if you can grab current ubuntu version lsb_release -a01:16
akkokay, sec ...01:16
lotuspsychjeakk: im pretty sure i installed 14.04 or 16.04 on those eee netbooks before01:17
akkthis stupid bios requires so many keystrokes to boot from a usb stick every time ...01:17
akkand then so many steps in rescue mode to get to where it'll actually give me a shell (waiting for it to download a bunch of stuff now)01:18
akkIt doesn't have a 'Just boot the kernel that's already on sdb5" option, first it has to download and prepare all the installer files.01:19
lotuspsychjeakk: did you choose fix broken packages?01:20
akkIt never asked me that option.01:20
lotuspsychjeakk: at wich step are you exactly?01:21
akkOkay, whew! I finally got to "execute a shell".01:21
akkSo I'm in a root shell with the proper / and /boot mounted.01:21
akklsb_release -a says it's 16.04.4 LTS, xenial01:22
lotuspsychjehmm01:22
akk(which is right, that's the ISO I downloaded)01:22
vinosorry abt that.01:22
lotuspsychjeakk: i would go for the fresh reinstall, that machine needs a new ubuntu :p01:25
akklotuspsychje: I just installed this two hours ago!01:26
akkwait, is 18.04 out yet?01:27
lotuspsychjeakk: not yet 26 april01:27
lotuspsychjeakk: xenial should work fine on it01:27
lotuspsychjeakk: so if you installed succesfully, and you cant boot there must be some bios setting wrong01:28
akkMaybe ... but 12.04 was booting fine, and there doesn't seem to be anything in the bios that looks relevant.01:30
lotuspsychjeakk: how did you partition in setup?01:30
akksda and b were some UEFI thing and some recovery thing, and I left them alone01:30
akkand I made partition 3 be /boot, 5 is /01:31
akkand 8 is swap01:31
akk(in between there are some spare root partitions and a big /home partition)01:31
lotuspsychjeakk: ah..i would go for the full swipe, let ubuntu choose partitioning01:31
chris28chu, hi01:32
akkI don't want one big partition, I specifically want a separate /boot and /home and several root partitions.01:32
chris28chu, sorry i wasn't meant to ping you, wrong person01:32
dmarrim trying to install linux-headers-generic, but it fails with // unmet dependencies linux-headers-generic: Depends: linux-headers-4.4.0.119-generic but it is not going to be installed01:33
lotuspsychjeakk: but if you leave that uefi alone, that might be the reason boot got scrambled..01:33
lotuspsychjedmarr: did you add external ppa's of any kind?01:33
akkI worry that if I overwrite those partitions, the laptop may never be salvageable.01:34
dmarrI am on 16.04.1 LTS -- kernel drivers 4.13.0-3801:34
lotuspsychjeakk: no, fresh install always works01:34
chris28does the latest ubuntu come with the new AMD graphics drivers in the kernel?01:34
dmarrlotuspsychje: i may have installed one- how do i check?01:34
lotuspsychje!sources | dmarr01:34
ubottudmarr: The packages in Ubuntu are divided into several sections. More information at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories - See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RecommendedSources for the recommended way to set up your repositories.01:34
akklotuspsychje: That's a joke, ha ha, right?01:35
lotuspsychjedmarr: !ppapurge your external ppa's and upgrade your system quick to 16.04.401:35
akk(Tried a fresh install on my friend's Acer and it was a total disaster. He ended up having to download a new copy of Windows and then install ubuntu in a VM.)01:35
akkAnd that was a "take all the defaults, let ubuntu partition the disk however it wants" install.01:35
lotuspsychjeakk: no, im not joking i always do full swipe and install ubuntu fresh01:36
akkUbuntu (and probably all linuces) clearly has problems with UEFI on some laptops.01:36
akkI had hoped that this one wasn't one of them because it CAME with ubuntu, but apparently that doesn't help.01:36
lotuspsychjeakk: i never had one system yet, that didnt want to install ubuntu yet01:36
akklotuspsychje: Google acer ubuntu and you'll find hundreds of examples. Also: never buy an Acer.01:37
lotuspsychjeakk: im using acer one atm, so untrue01:37
akkReally? Interesting.01:37
bazhangakk whats the ubuntu support issue01:37
lotuspsychjeakk: and as i said before, i recall installing later ubuntu on those asus EEE netbooks01:37
akkWhen I asked here (it was a couple weeks ago) everybody had horror stories about acer and said it's perfectly normal that the install ends up bricking it.01:38
lotuspsychjebazhang: ubuntu asus EEE netbook, she has error: file not found.\ngrub rescue after install01:38
akkAsus is usually better (not like acer at all) but maybe this one is an exception. :(01:38
akkThis isn't an EEE01:38
bazhanglotuspsychje, asus is the eeebook01:38
bazhangakk so you are having an issue with some acer netbook or the like01:39
bazhangakk mind sharing some of the system specs on that computer01:40
akkthis is a 1015e, celeron from a couple years after the eee line was discontinued, I'm installing 64-bit01:40
dmarr!ppapurge01:42
ubottuTo disable a PPA from your sources and revert your packages back to default Ubuntu packages, install ppa-purge and use the command: « sudo ppa-purge ppa:<repository-name>/<subdirectory> » – For more information, see http://www.webupd8.org/2009/12/remove-ppa-repositories-via-command.html01:42
akkAnyone know anything about grub-install syntax? I wonder if the problem here is that it tried installing to sda rather than the boot partition sda3.01:42
lotuspsychjeakk: if you succeeded the ubuntu install, something must be wrong with either partioning, or uefi setting01:44
lotuspsychjeakk: so what i would try is reinstall, full swipe with ubuntu partition automaticly01:45
lotuspsychjeakk: if you dont like layout, you can change afterwards right01:45
akkNot easily. Have you ever tried to use gparted to resize a partition on a 300G disk? It takes DAYS (if it ever finishes, I've always given up after a day).01:46
lotuspsychjeakk: and never give away your xenial usb again :p01:46
akk:)01:46
mikeymophas anyone gotten arc theme to install on 1804?01:48
mikeymopit looks really strange if you enable it01:48
mikeymopalso, does anyone know how to get hte stock gnome panel and not the ambiance one?01:48
mikeymopI tried installing gnome-session01:48
lotuspsychjemikeymop: #ubuntu+1 for bionic talk please01:49
akkAll the pages I find on grub rescue have disk partitions that look like (hd0,msdosN) and mine are all (hd0,gptN), I wonder what that means.01:49
mikeymoplotuspsychje: ty01:49
akkI wish there was some documentation somewhere on the grub rescue commands!01:50
lotuspsychje!recovergrub | akk01:50
ubottuakk: Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub01:50
akkI can set root= and set prefix=, but then everbody says to insmod something, and both insmod linux and insmod normal give "file not found".01:51
dmarrlotuspsychje: its odd that i installed fresh 16.0.4 LTS Desktop but go no prompts to upgrade, even after running Software Updater01:51
akkThere is of course no lsmod.01:51
bazhangakk #grub has a channel and a wiki01:51
rud0lfguys i need absolute minimal ubuntu, non-gui, just sshd into01:51
rud0lfleast packets, only basic setup01:51
rud0lfcan you help me?01:51
bazhang!mini | rud0lf01:51
akkoh, thanks, I'll try that, bazhang01:51
ubotturud0lf: The Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want.  The installer is text based (rather than graphical as used on the Desktop DVD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD01:51
dmarrwould i use do-release-updgrade to get to the version you suggested?01:51
rud0lfcool01:52
rud0lfthanks baz :)01:52
lotuspsychjedmarr: you said you had 16.04.1?01:52
dmarrlotuspsychje: i assumed so when i run uname -a and it shows that01:52
dmarr#43~16.04.1-Ubuntu01:52
akkAnd thanks for that recovergrub link, lotuspsychje, I'll try some of those commands if I can't find any help on grub rescue.01:52
lotuspsychjedmarr: sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade01:53
dmarrlotuspsychje: that was what I saw after the 16.04.4 download01:53
lotuspsychjeakk: reinstall fresh hint hint :p01:54
dmarrlotuspsychje: ok -- i guess do-release-upgrade is bringing me to v1701:54
akklotuspsychje: I hear you but I still say that I just did a fresh install, so I don't have your confidence that it would change anything.01:54
akkI will try it if I can't find any way to reinstall grub from this install.01:54
lotuspsychjeakk: yeah but you avoided some existing partitions01:55
akk(I'm still afraid that overwriting those two partitions will brick the system even worse)01:55
lotuspsychjeakk: ubuntu cant brick a system01:55
akklotuspsychje: It seems to have just bricked mine, in the sense of not being able to boot. Hopefully not permanently though.01:56
lotuspsychjeakk: you didnt brick, ubuntu is not installed correctly01:57
akkI was using brick in the soft-brick sense of going from a usable system to an unusable one.01:58
akkSorry, getting frustrated after hours of this.02:00
lotuspsychjeakk: then dont be stubborn and reinstall fresh02:00
=== brainwash_ is now known as brainwash
akkIt's not just stubbornness, it's not wanting to risk losing those partitions.02:01
lotuspsychjeakk: an empty hd needs new partitions?02:01
lotuspsychjeakk: or you got data on them?02:01
akkThere's data on there from asus. One of them is labeled "recovery partition".02:02
akkWhich if I could figure out how to access it, might help me get the computer working again.02:02
akkThe other is labeled EFI something, so it might be important to booting.02:02
lotuspsychjeakk: mostly those partitions hold windows drivers n such02:03
hggdhb02:03
akkThis computer never had windows on it.02:03
akkIt came with Ubuntu from the factory.02:03
akkJust ubuntu, not dual-boot.02:03
lotuspsychjeakk: yea you told me before02:03
akkJust meant that it seems unlikely it would have windows drivers.02:04
lotuspsychjeakk: anyway..i did like tons of formats with ubuntu with full swipe auto partioning, never go wrong for me once..02:05
lotuspsychjeakk: so this said ill rest my case, or its wrong uefi setting, or wrong partitoning02:06
dmarrweird this 17.10 upgrade just left me at the login screen with no mouse movement02:10
dmarrno keyboard interaction either02:10
dmarrhard reboot fixed it /shrug02:11
akkActually it looks like the ubuntu installer may not handle separate /boot right at all.02:14
akkThe /boot/grub/grub.cfg file has a lot of stuff like set root="hd1,gpt3" where root should be hd0,gpt5.02:14
akkThe 3 might be right because I know sometimes grub says root when it means boot, but the hd1 seems wrong regardless.02:15
dmarrand when I try to run software updater now it says I need to do a 'partial upgrade'. but after authing, nothing happens02:15
i-make-robotsi'm using a rescue disk.  i made sure my hostname matches /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts.  i still get failures when bringing enp0s16 up (tho it does go up) and any attempt to resolve a domain name.  i can ping the router.  what am I missing, please?02:16
i-make-robotsdmesg is unhelpful02:16
dmarrhere we go. xorg had failed to install02:18
oerhekson 17.10 > after edit /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts ,  systemctl restart systemd-logind.service # or hostnamectl set-hostname NEW_NAME_HERE would do it instantly, temporarely02:20
akkAha! grub-install /dev/sdb gives a bunch of errors, which the installer ignored and didn't bother to relay.02:20
oerhekselse you need a reboot,, but that would be silly on a rescuedisk02:20
i-make-robotsoerheks - was that for me?  i'm trying to figure out why i can't resolve domain names when i can ping the router which is online.02:22
i-make-robotsearlier in the evening i had the default rescue hostname (ubuntu) which i later realized was not the one in the hostnames file.  I rebooted and used the correct hostname, but I'm still can't ping google because it doesn't know wtf google.com is.02:23
oerheksreset the router02:23
i-make-robotsi made sure to update /etc/network/interfaces to change eth0 into enp0s16 and make sure it was auto02:24
akkAlso, grub-install is "installing for i386-pc platform"02:24
i-make-robotswhen i ifdown/ifup it says it failed ot up enp0s16, but then ifconfig says it's up with the correct static ip.02:24
i-make-robotsi'll try the router reset.02:24
i-make-robotsdisconnecting for a moment...02:24
akkand ls /usr/lib/grub has i386-pc but doesn't have x86_64 even though the version of ubuntu I installed was amd64.02:24
i-make-robotsstill can't resvolve hosts...02:26
i-make-robotsafk02:26
akkIn this shell, networking works but DNS doesn't apparently because a resolvconf daemon isn't running.02:34
akkI can ping 91.189.94.40 (ubuntu.com) but putting 8.8.8.8 in /etc/resolv.conf doesn't work to resolve hostnames (so I can't apt-get install the missing grub pieces).02:35
akkI guess I could edit /etc/hosts ...02:36
Randolfakk:  You could run your own instance of ISC Bind and add 127.0.0.1 into /etc/resolv.conf.  That's what I do, and it works well.02:37
RandolfBy using an external DNS server you're adding another potential point of failure into your configuration.02:38
RandolfUse externals as a backup in case your own has problems, that's fine, but running your own can work very well.02:38
akkI'd have to install bind first, right?02:39
akkI should definitely look into that in general, though, thanks Randolf02:40
RandolfYes, you will need to do that.02:40

amazoniantoadYes Randolf03:00
RandolfOh.  Errors with those too?03:00
amazoniantoadYes03:00
amazoniantoadShould I try to do this with pip?03:00
RandolfI don't know the answer to that.03:01
RandolfWhat error do you see when you try this?  apt install swi-prolog-nox03:02
* Randolf is just trying: apt install swi-prolog03:02
amazoniantoadRandolf, https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/gBHfT2TTYs/03:03
RandolfIt installed for me without any problems on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.03:03
amazoniantoadRandolf, so I guess my problem is holding broken packages. How should I approach this?03:04
RandolfAre you running on a production machine?03:05
amazoniantoadI don't know what you mean by that. I need it for school03:05
RandolfWell, "production" as opposed to "test."03:05
RandolfIf it's not for a "production" environment, then you could try:  apt update03:06
Randolf...and then:  apt upgrade03:06
* amazoniantoad crosses fingers03:06
RandolfThe problem is that I don't know why your packages are "broken" and so it's possible that an apt upgrade could fail and leave your system in a worse state.03:06
RandolfYou should have backups before proceeding.03:06
amazoniantoadtoo late03:07
RandolfHopefully it works then.03:07
SlidingHornamazoniantoad: you have broken packages - do you have any PPAs enabled?03:07

amazoniantoadyes03:09
RandolfWhich ones?03:09
amazoniantoadi'll list it in paste03:09
SlidingHornamazoniantoad: also, which version & flavor of ubuntu are you using?03:11

amazoniantoadubuntu 16.0403:12
SlidingHornwow...that's a lot...03:12
amazoniantoad...sorry03:12
amazoniantoadWant me to clean it up?03:13
RandolfSimpler is often better.03:14
amazoniantoadokay03:14
SlidingHornWell first, it looks like your teamviewer repos are for Debian and not Ubuntu, which could have an effect on why your original error said you may be using an unstable distribution03:14
RandolfI was able to install and run prolog without any PPAs.03:14
amazoniantoadhm03:14
SlidingHornOne should always try to avoid PPAs whenever possible03:15
amazoniantoadI didn't know that03:15
RandolfI used one within the past few weeks because someone I'm supporting needed PHP5.  I've not used any others, and I want to get rid of that PPA sooner rather than later anyway.03:15
SlidingHornalso, you're using an outside PPA for prolog, when there's a version in the normal repos03:16
SlidingHornsame with obs-studio03:17
SlidingHorn...and TOR...03:18
SlidingHornwhy did you enable all of these PPAs??  At this point, I'd almost just recommend a full reinstall because there's so much extra outside stuff installed that I wouldn't know where to start03:19
amazoniantoadIt's complaining because I have newer versions of dependencies than what it wants03:19
Randolfamazoniantoad:  It looks like SlidingHorn figured out what the problem is -- PPAs.03:19
amazoniantoadI disabled them03:19
SlidingHornamazoniantoad: did you uninstall all the stuff you installed from them?03:20
amazoniantoadNo03:20
SlidingHornamazoniantoad: then you're going to run into the same dependency problems03:20
SlidingHornI've found t leasat 4 different applications you unnecessarily used an outside PPA for03:21
amazoniantoadI think what I'm going to do is just use xen whenever I need ppa's. Would that be a good idea?03:24
amazoniantoadI mean *need* not just suggested, didn't know I shouldn't use ppa's either03:25
SlidingHornthat's the thing...you should *very* rarely need PPAs03:25
amazoniantoadYeah I'll just stick to the main repos for now on03:26
amazoniantoadThanks guys03:27

guiverci-make-robots, if you can ping 8.8.8.8 (google dns) but not say google.com; your DNS (domain name service) isn't work (one part of it is in /etc/resolv.conf) - a quick fix is to add "nameserver 8.8.8.8" to /etc/resolv.conf which will force usage of google's dns (try pinging things again).  this is a quick fix which will be overwritten by a reboot.  i can't help more now sorry (maybe someone else can)04:19

guivercExterminador, yes you can add/remove disks/drives to lvm without wiping existing data - but I don't use it enough to guide or help you (i've only done it on real machines, not vps but don't believe that'd make a difference)09:34

vltExterminador: `vgs`09:43
Exterminador/run/lvm/lvmetad.socket: connect failed: No such file or directory :/09:44
vltExterminador: The concept of LVM is quite simple. You take one or more source devices and turn them into a so called "physical volume" to be used by LVM.09:44
vltExterminador: You then create a "volume group". A volume can contain any number of "logical volumes".09:45
brainwashMrM1st: you could boot without "quiet splash" parameters, and see what error is printed when using the faulty kernel(s)09:46
vltExterminador: Later you can add or remove physical volumes, add or remove logical volumes and de- or increase their size.09:46
MrM1stbrainwash: Trying...09:46
MrM1stbrainwash: Trying -38 now. I just remove "quit splash" from the command line, right? And push F10?09:47

JimBuntumarvin1, is this is the USB drive that you couldn't boot before? Sounds like it was damaged or the whole machine is damaged. I would suggest making a new live boot media, booting into it and recovering your files that way... if the old drive is damaged, you may want to make an image of it, then recover files from the image10:56

Gargravarrifdown is a wrapper script iirc14:14
Gargravarrnot sure 100% what it does, but i've had strange failures in the past so i stick to ifconfig <if> down/up now14:15
Gargravarralso noteworthy, ifconfig is deprecated and 'ip link' replaces it14:15

MJCDI dont use gitlab15:11
jogamannevermind, ls -a solved the issue. Heh.15:12
ioriaMJCD,  the main config is in ~/.config/tint2/tint2rc ; the default one is not very interesting, but there are tons of examples on the web; git use cmake and stuff , idk if you're familiar with that:  https://gitlab.com/o9000/tint2/tree/0.14.415:12

For both 16.04 lts (currently installed) and 18.04 lts (will do through vm, for later installation on actual system). Now these will naturally be huge downloads so...is it possible to pause and resume downloads (including reboot of system)? As in say I press ctrl+c then after reboot issue the apt-mirror16:15

pikapikaI can probalby effect such downloads in the required manner no problem16:23
pikapikaSlidingHorn: Are the packages.gz files ever changed...as in is there a risk of them changing while being downloaded?16:24
Cryterionfiles won't normally change while you downloading, just a new version might get uploaded, under a new name, ie version number change16:25
SlidingHornpikapika: not likely while being downloaded, but by the time, you eventually use them (considering a several month time span) then, it's likely the software will be out of date by the time you use it16:25
naccpikapika: if there is, that why you use the md5sum or other hash to verify the contents16:25
naccCryterion: packages.gz is a fixed name (not versioned)16:26
Cryterionah16:26
naccPackages.gz, anyways (compressed Packages file)16:26
pikapikaSlidingHorn: no I mean after mirroring is finished, I will perform initial installation of any packages via the local version, but then immediately update from the online version16:26
pikapikaSo the bulk of my downloading during this period will be for the updates not for the "base"16:26
pikapikaWould that ensure sufficiently recent packages?16:27

jgriff1Does Ubuntu require a reboot before apt after a dist-upgrade before it will show all those packages as patched?  I'm using packer/chef to create an ami.  Chef handles the dist-upgrade and uploads a before/after of 'apt-list --upgradeable' to s3.  The before/after show the same but it I launch an instance on the ami and run the command it shows nothing as upgradeable.  The only difference is the reboot.17:05

bobdobbsI just plugged an external 2T Seagate drive to a USB port. A blue light on the drive has activated. How do I find the drive from ubuntu?22:29
oerheksbobdobbs, it should show up in your filemanager, if not, check out the partition type of that drive, exfat needs 2 downloads to make it work22:31
oerhekssudo apt install exfat-fuse exfat-utils # and plugin22:32
bobdobbsoerheks: I can't see it in the filemanager. How do I check the partition type?22:33
oerhekssudo fdisk -l22:33
oerheksand if it is not exfat but just ntfs, check with ntfs tools for errors, that would prevent automount too22:34
bobdobbsthanks22:34
oerheksmy best guess it is exfat, partitioned with windows22:34
oerheks* with gpt22:34
bobdobbsoerheks: I found the drive! I attempted to mount it and got "/media/ext: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error"22:38

bobdobbsI miss the days when external harddrives were plug'n play22:39
konradosHello! I changed my default KDE menu start to ... something. I used right-click -> alternatives. Anyway this looks like this: https://pasteboard.co/Hi0wdo1.png and I have a question - is there any way to customize it? I would like to make the left part ('favorites') much wider. Some... config file or something?22:40
Thedarkb-X40I'm having terrible stability issues and I can't find out why because apport keeps crashing.22:41
backnforthHi, I  have no sound coming out of my machine. I'm using Ubuntu 17.10. And no, my applications are not muted.22:49

Thedarkb-X40I'm praying it'll fix my stability issues.22:50
Thedarkb-X40If not, I'm going back to Debian.22:50
naccThedarkb-X40: you could try it now and see22:50
naccThedarkb-X40: or you can do that now22:50
Thedarkb-X40Do you recommend it?22:50
naccThedarkb-X40: do i recommend what?22:50
Thedarkb-X40Debian?22:51
Thedarkb-X40I haven't used it in years.22:51
naccThedarkb-X40: no and you're in the Ubuntu support channel, not a place for recommendations anyways22:51
Thedarkb-X40Yeah, fair enough.22:51

ScriptGeekdoes anyone here use the Dell XPS 13 supercomputer?22:54
Bashing-omScriptGeek: See: https://daniel.holba.ch/blog/2018/04/a-month-with-dell-xps-13-9370/ <-A month with Dell XPS 13 . To be 18.04 performs well in his use case .22:58
ScriptGeekBashing-om: I get a 404 on that link23:00
Thedarkb-X40Well, this is my beater laptop.23:00
Thedarkb-X40It's my main that has the stability issues23:00
Thedarkb-X40Client: HexChat 2.12.4 • OS: Ubuntu "artful" 17.10 • CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.40GHz (800MHz) • Memory: Physical: 1.2 GiB Total (530.2 MiB Free) Swap: 945.3 MiB Total (818.1 MiB Free) • Storage: 14.3 GB / 31.8 GB (17.5 GB Free) • VGA: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device @ Intel Corporation 82852/82855 GM/GME/PM/GMV Processor to I/O Contr23:00

john67765675hey guys, i just installed ubuntu mini with lxqt but affter booting all i can i see is a black screen with a blinking cursor23:00
ScriptGeekThedarkb-X40: of course it's stable, it's been around for 60 years lol23:01
Bashing-omScriptGeek: Too ! lemme see what I can find out about that link .. be back soonest .23:02
john67765675hey guys, i just installed ubuntu mini with lxqt but affter booting all i can i see is a black screen with a blinking cursor23:02
ScriptGeekThedarkb-X40: I wish my old netbook, which seems to have even more power than your machine, worked with the software I'd like to run23:03
Thedarkb-X40This is an old beater ThinkPad.23:03
Thedarkb-X40I bought it for €5.50.23:03
Thedarkb-X40It does everything I need it to as a backup machine.23:03
Bashing-omScriptGeek: I guess the author pulled the link as I also get a 404 from the original source :( .. bottom line though was his advisement that 18.04 did well as opposed to 16.04 .23:05
Thedarkb-X40It's got a really nice keyboard and a 4:3 screen.23:05
Thedarkb-X40What more could I want.23:05
Thedarkb-X407 row, full travel.23:05
ScriptGeek_Thedarkb-X40: man, those screens are the best23:05
Thedarkb-X40ikr23:06
Thedarkb-X40You don't need to scroll down as often.23:06
ScriptGeek_Yeah, only thing better is a high res widescreen turned vertical, which has a nice price tag23:07
ScriptGeek_too much money23:07
Thedarkb-X40My X200 has a 16:10 screen.23:07
Thedarkb-X40Which I like for other reasons.23:07
Thedarkb-X40Also has a full travel 7 row keyboard.23:08
Thedarkb-X40I <3 old ThinkPads.23:08
ScriptGeek_My netbook only has a 6 row keyboard23:08
ScriptGeek_with chiclet keys23:08
Thedarkb-X40What's the point then?23:09
Thedarkb-X40This thing is only barely bigger than a netbook and it's much nicer to use.23:09
ScriptGeek_fits inside your underwear23:09
Thedarkb-X40Ah.23:09
Thedarkb-X40What app can't you run on it?23:09

Thedarkb-X40Oh.23:11
Thedarkb-X40That's to be expected.23:11
ScriptGeek_looks like it's running a version from 200923:11

ScriptGeekyou're welcome23:15
ScriptGeekI'm glad I could help23:15
kostkonScriptGeek, you could try with MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=2.1 unity_executable see if it changes anything  opengl2.1 is as far as your netbook can go  wanna also try 3.0 though? be my guest23:15
kostkonScriptGeek, that's the command:  MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=2.1 your_unity_executable23:16
leomessi8102hey guys, i just installed ubuntu mini with lxqt but affter booting all i can i see is a black screen with a blinking cursor23:16
Thedarkb-X40Stop spamming.23:16
Thedarkb-X40I think you might need to reinstall.23:16
kostkonScriptGeek, by default you only get opengl1.4 support with gma315023:16
ScriptGeekkostkon: It looks like Unity 2017 requires DX10, but the gma 3150 GPU only goes to DX9... maybe I can run OpenGL unstead? idk23:17
ScriptGeekI'm actually trying for Unity 2018.1. Probably the same issues23:17
ScriptGeekkostkon: I'll give that command a try, thanks!23:17
kostkonScriptGeek, Linux version of unity uses opengl. there's no directx in Linux  assuming you are trying to run the Linux version and not the windows one through wine23:18
ScriptGeekkostkon: Unity has a build that should run on Linux native23:19

hanetzerthe actual configure script is not meant for human eyes or editors :P23:37

hanetzerflying_sausages: no clue. never heard of that particular automake macro. Also, consider ditching the autogen.sh and manually running autoreconf -fis23:38
