phirephlymatheo, a draft of the release announcement?07:50
matheothe release date was 26 april due to a post on itsfoss website07:50
lotuspsychjematheo: wich release are you on?07:50
fofaleehello ping site.com in that what is ttl07:50
fofaleettl acronym07:51
matheoI am on 16.0407:51
mariciusits not the 26th everywere in the world yet :P07:51
phirephlyfofalee, time to live. It's the number of routers the packet went through07:51
matheolol :D07:51
lotuspsychjematheo: then you wont get an upgrade window, we advise lts to lts upgrade in june 18.04.107:51
fofaleehow do you know time to live is the....07:52
fofaleenumber of routers07:52
fofaleeas manual of ping says it otherwise07:52
phirephlyfofalee, ah sorry, I think ping shows the remaining TTL, so it's the original TTL - the number of routers it went through07:53
matheoBut why to june ? is there any problems might happen if I upgraded it ?07:54
lotuspsychjematheo: its your system, you can do what you want...07:54
fofaleehey ping -t ttl,..what's the right cmd to use the tll option07:54
phirephlyfofalee, I believe the default TTL is 64, which is perfectly fine for most uses. Why are you asking?07:55
fofaleephirephly: can you give an example on how to use ping -t option07:55
fofaleejust using it, and trying it07:56
Piteltraceroute uses ping with ttl in the background07:56
fofaleeping -t shows error all the time;07:56
phirephly"ping -t 2 google.com" should show "time to live exceeded"07:57
phirephlywhere "ping -t 200 google.com" should work07:57
fofaleebut number of routers is not the unit of time... also how do you change the number of router hops, as it's dependent on the path packets take07:58
oxdntrthi guys, thx for Ubuntu07:58
phirephlyfofalee, the original concept was they'd use time, but quickly realized that was a bad idea, so it's a decrementing counter of router hops07:58
oxdntrtI'd like to know how to properly separate partition during install, I'd like to have a special partitition for the system (/root), but what do I choose for the rest ?07:59
phirephlyyour computer sets it to some value (usually 64?) and each router subtracts 1. The remaining TTL to any one specific site tends to stay pretty stable until some ISP changes something07:59
lotuspsychje!partitioning | oxdntrt08:00
ubottuoxdntrt: For help with partitioning a new install see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowtoPartition | For partitioning programs, see !GParted (recommended) or !PartitionManager. Other partitioning topics include !fstab, !home, and !swap08:00
oxdntrtthx08:00
fofaleeok08:01
fofaleebut I still don't change the hops = 43 with the -t option, so what's it's use at all08:01
fofalee4308:01
ducasseoxdntrt: /root is the root user's homedir, not the root fs08:01
mariciusthe -t options tells your computer that the packet it sends during the ping have a ttl of what ever you write after -t it dosent change how many hops/routers the trafic has to go though to reach google or whatever you are pinging08:02
oxdntrtducasse what is the name of the partition for the system and how much space should I allocate to it please(will install office suit, firefox, gimp, smplayer)08:03
phirephlyfofalee, I see what you mean. The t flag doesnt seem to do anything08:03
phirephlyfofalee, hah, ok, so the reason the -t flag doesnt seem to impact the displayed remaining TTL on the results is because that's the remaining TTL on the reply08:06
phirephlyso your -t flag changes the outgoing packet's TTL, but the remote server's ICMP reply is still using TTL=64 regardless08:07
fofaleedo you use tmux08:07
phirephlyfofalee, no.08:07
ducasseoxdntrt: the root fs is / - i'd reserve 15-20gb for it08:07
phirephlyI use screen a ton, but havent happened to use tmux08:07
fofaleehow many ubuntu users know programming ... not special purpose programming like bash, html but more serious ones08:08
fofaleejust curious08:08
fofaleeto see if I am lagging behind08:08
fofaleeas I don't code, and the linux community seems to be more literate08:09
mariciusYou dont have to code at all to use linux, learn to code if it makes sense in your life, or if you want to learn. but its perfectly fine to use linux as a non programmer08:09

fath0m112:03
maskeddriver212:03
leftyfbI was just curious why you would upgrade an LTS release to a non-LTS release when the latest LTS is getting released the same day or days after you upgraded.12:03
maskeddriverleftyfb, I didn't say I upgraded recently12:03
maskeddriverit's actually been several months12:04
sky887I installed one of the daily builds, is it necessary to reinstall?12:04
maskeddriverI'm trying to clean things up ahead of today's release12:04
antonmHappy release day!12:04
maskeddriverand that is one of the things that has been a stickler12:04
fath0mit is not, with apt upgrade and update you will eventually get to the current LTS12:04
maskeddriverI messed with it for a few days after moving to 17.10, gave up, and now I'm revisiting it12:05
JimBuntumaskeddriver, Have you looked in /usr/share/gdm/greeter-settings ?12:05
ak002can i use latest  version of chrome in ubuntu 32 bit variant12:05
sky887The devs owe themselves a good party12:05
fath0m[2]12:05
maskeddriverJimBuntu, I don't have that file12:05
sky887Great job!12:06
minimecmaskeddriver: Verify that 'plymouth-theme-ubuntu-logo' is installed. If it is, do 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure plymouth-theme-ubuntu-logo'. I think it also handles the gdm theme.12:06
anibicHas anyone received the 18.04 yet ?12:06
antonmI havn't12:06
Gargravarranibic: still pending, please follow #ubuntu-release-party for further updates12:07
guivercsky887, (not sure if answered); but normal updates will turn your daily.build into final 18.0412:07
fath0misn't official release on 29th?12:07
Gargravarrfath0m: no, official release is today12:07
JimBuntufath0m, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BionicBeaver/ReleaseSchedule12:07
anibicI am already logged in there12:07
fath0moh damn, pardon my ignorance :)12:08
Gargravarrthen please keep comments concerning Bionic to the other channel so we can continue Ubuntu support in here :)12:08
maskeddriverI wonder if purging that and then reinstalling might fix it?12:08
Gargravarrmaskeddriver: iirc there is a 'greeter-icons' package12:08
Gargravarrtry searching for that12:09

sky887guiverc, thanks!12:10
dragetThe current ubiquity installer (Kubuntu 18.04 daily live image) does not allow setting a username with a dot. I.e. 'draget.foo' is not valid. Is this intended or a bug?12:11
walouteste de xehchat12:11
maskeddriverminimec, that didn't work, but I think you might have misunderstood, now that I realize what you suggested. I had already updated plymouth. It's not the splash screen on boot. At the bottom of the greeter on the logon screen there is a big logo that says "Ubuntu Gnome"12:13
maskeddriverminimec, it's like there is something like this: https://people.gnome.org/~pmkovar/system-admin-guide/login-logo.html12:15
maskeddriverbut there isn't actually anything there12:15
ChunkzZ!isitoutyet12:15
ubottuNot yet!12:15
guivercdraget, your question maybe should be on #ubuntu+1, but I think a bit late to ask there.  I just created a user with name.more so its valid (i tested), i'd suggest raising a bug on launchpad12:16
minimecmaskeddriver: I think I did understand you. If you go to '/usr/share/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-gnome-logo' you will see (at least in 16.04) that there files like 'password_filed.png'. That's why my impression was, that the plymouth theme also handles the gdm login screen.12:17
Gargravarrdraget: this is the same for current LTS as well, by default Ubuntu does not permit usernames with a dot in them12:17
guivercoops - my bad Gargravarr & dragnet (who must have gone)12:18
maskeddriverminimec, I do see the ubuntu-gnome_logo.png file in there12:19
maskeddriveris there an alternative setting for plymouth theme?12:19
minimecmaskeddriver: Oh... That could be for encrypted drives that need a password to continue the boot process. Forget everything I said... lol12:19
maskeddriverminimec, no I think you're right12:19
maskeddriverI see the logo right there12:20
maskeddriverright next to it is "ubuntu-logo.png"12:20
Gargravarrguiverc: it depends how you create the user. 'useradd' doesn't care. 'adduser' applies a regex to the username. i assume Ubiquity builds on top of 'adduser'12:20
minimecmaskeddriver: Did you once 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm'?12:20
maskeddriverinside of themes there is "ubuntu-gnome-logo" "ubuntu-gnome-text" "ubuntu-logo" "ubuntu-text"12:20
maskeddriverminimec, would a purge and reinstall of gdm do that?12:21
maskeddriverbecause I completely got rid of everything gnome/gdm related and reinstalled them12:21
guivercyeah useradd (old unix commands) was how i 'tested'...12:21
minimecmaskeddriver: removing gdm would maybe even remove the whole GUI. I guess you don't want that. dpkg-reconfigure will do...12:22
maskeddriverminimec, what I'm saying is that I did completely remove the entire GUI12:22
maskeddriverwayland, xorg12:22
maskeddrivereverything12:22
maskeddriverlol12:22
maskeddriverand reinstalled it12:22
maskeddrivernot just "remove"12:23
maskeddriverbut "purge"12:23
Gargravarrmaskeddriver: please reinstall the universe and reboot12:23
Gargravarrah, yes, be careful about that ^12:23
maskeddriverI tried everything to just have "Ubuntu" at the bottom of that darn greeter lol12:24
maskeddrivermy update-alternatives --config default.plymouth is already going to ubuntu-logo.plymouth12:26
maskeddrivereven though I think the ubuntu-gnome logo is very pretty12:26
Gargravarrmaskeddriver: swap out the images? probably the quickest win12:28
maskeddriverlol hacky12:28
maskeddriverI like it12:28
maskeddriverwonder if that'll do it12:28
Gargravarrhacky, but if you've tried everything, then it's time to revert to hacks :)12:29
maskeddriverlol, indeed12:29
maskeddriverbrb gonna test it12:29
dragetguiverc: The /etc/adduser.conf does indeed container a regex for NAME_REGEX which does not include a dot.12:31
maskeddriverlol that worked12:31
* draget hops to ubuntu+112:31
maskeddrivernow I just need to search my filesystem for some something that is referencing that ubuntu-gnome_logo.png and fix it12:31
Cheezlsof might help12:32
maskeddriveryeah12:32
maskeddriverI know HOW to do it, I'm just annoyed that it took me this long to realize it was something this system12:33
maskeddriversimple*12:33
maskeddriverhere I am completely reinstalling guis and I could just overwrite a file12:33
maskeddriveri had no idea gdm3 greeter and and plymouth were related12:33
maskeddriverfor some reason I was under the impression that plymouth was almost exclusively used for the splash screen12:34

retrangravataflorida, gotcha. then your issue appears to be unrelated.23:16
retrangravataflorida, did you try the advice "pavlos" suggested?23:16

aconite33Anyone had issues with randomly changing keyboard layouts when using capslock key?23:22
galuneHi. I'm planning on upgrading a xenial LTS server to bionic. Are there any known issues?23:23
matlockif you have a critical xenial LTS machine there is absolutely no rush to move it to bionic LTS23:24
retrangalune, there's been betas out for a while. have you tested on them?23:25
galunematlock: We'd like the 3.6 python version, basically.23:26
gravatafloridapavlos, but my mousepad was not working and i couldnt select the install button :D23:26
galuneretran: I've tried it in a VM and it seemed to be OK, but it's hard to test on the actual hardware without taking it down.23:26
retrangalune, and your plan is to do it live based on the reponse you get in an IRC chan? :p23:27

gravatafloridatried. no success...23:27
galuneI'm just asking if anyone knows of any major issues. I'm prepared to take the chance if it's basically fine.23:27
pavlosgravataflorida: you press SHIFT immediately after bios completes23:28
daxgalune: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BionicBeaver/ReleaseNotes#Known_issues is the official list, but it's right after release so there's a reasonable chance that'll get longer in the next few days23:29
galunethanks23:29
