jordan4ibanezHello, I'm getting a severe apt error on 16.04 amd6402:26
jordan4ibanezWhen I run sudo apt (or apt-get or aptitude) update I get https://pastebin.com/raw/3pBuKUyi02:28
samuncle-Hi03:29
samuncle-I'm struggling with something03:31
samuncle-I have a setup where the monitor is reflected on a mirror03:32
samuncle-For that I need to flip the screen so the output looks correct on the mirror03:33
samuncle-But I only found so far how to rotate the picture which isn't what is correct03:34
samuncle-Does anyone know if it's possible?03:34
nova_I'm trying to find the icon that the Messaging Indicator Plugin is using so I can change it.  I'm using the Moka icon theme and it unfortunately sets both the notification indicator and messaging indicator to the same icon, While Adwaita or Elementary show different icons (a ball and an envelope).  Can anyone point me in the right place?05:21
nova_sorry not a ball, a bell*05:22
Unit193nova_: I wasn't around.  But you're welcome!  Glad it helped!05:32
nova_Unit193: yes huge help thanks05:38
nova_Now I'm looking to tweak the Moka icons slightly.  I have 2 bells in my tray and it looks weird05:39
nova_oh wait i found it05:42
m00n_urnHey! is xubuntu supposed to run on kernel version 4.15.0-20-generic? because, the latest stable is 14.16.8, Is upgrading adviceable?06:58
pmjdebru1jn14.16.8 ?06:59
pmjdebru1jn4.16.8 you mean?06:59
pmjdebru1jnbut essentially no07:00
pmjdebru1jnthe mainline kernels aren't really meant to be directly used by end users07:00
m00n_urnyeah *4.16.807:00
pmjdebru1jncanonical maintains the 4.15.x tree for whatever should be relevant for ubuntu users07:00
pmjdebru1jnthough of course, that can be subject to debate07:00
well_laid_lawnm00n_urn:  unless you have a real need for the latest kernel it's not worth the hassle07:01
pmjdebru1jnm00n_urn: so the answer is no, you should "upgrade"07:01
pmjdebru1jnNOT*07:01
pmjdebru1jnsorry07:01
pmjdebru1jnyou shouldn't upgrade07:01
pmjdebru1jnunless there is a significant issue for you07:01
pmjdebru1jnvia the 4.15 kernel packages you'll automatically get security patches etc...07:02
pmjdebru1jnonce you buidl your own kernel, you're entirely responsible for the security of your system yourself07:02
m00n_urnpmjdebru1jn, well, my 18.04 keeps facing random freezes, the last time was when I was copying files. All of them got corrupted via transfer. So, based on some google-fu I figured upgrading the kernel would fix some issues with it freezing.07:02
m00n_urnwell_laid_lawn, alright07:02
well_laid_lawngenerall intermittent issues are hardware related - software keeps doing the same thing07:03
m00n_urnwell_laid_lawn, ubuntu trusty didn't have this issue so..07:08
pmjdebru1jnm00n_urn: sounds implausible07:08
pmjdebru1jnbuilding your own kernel really is inadvisable07:08
pmjdebru1jnm00n_urn: considering sticking with xubuntu 16.04 for a while, until 18.04 has gotten some updates07:09
* pmjdebru1jn rarely updates his system just days after a new release07:09
pmjdebru1jnit's not a day idea to wait a few weeks in general (with any OS)07:09
well_laid_lawnit's not something that shouldn't be done - just a lot of work for not much gain mostly07:09
m00n_urnpmjdebru1jn, oh okay, so I just have to wait for 18.04 to issue updates to fix the random freezes?07:10
pmjdebru1jnwell_laid_lawn: if one needs to ask about when it's appropriate to build his own kernel, one probably shouldn't attempt it07:10
pmjdebru1jnm00n_urn: there probably nothing random about it07:10
pmjdebru1jnm00n_urn: maybe one driver is misbehaving07:10
pmjdebru1jnwho knows07:11
pmjdebru1jni'd just wait a few weeks, and then retry07:11
pmjdebru1jninstead of wasting a lot of time now07:11
m00n_urnpmjdebru1jn, how would I even check for things like these?07:11
pmjdebru1jnm00n_urn: btw, did you inspect your syslog after a freeze07:11
pmjdebru1jnsee if anything got logged07:11
pmjdebru1jnm00n_urn: huh?07:11
pmjdebru1jncheck for what?07:12
pmjdebru1jnjust try07:12
pmjdebru1jnyou just happened to hit an unlucky case07:12
pmjdebru1jnit happens07:12
pmjdebru1jnpresuming it's not hardware related07:12
m00n_urnpmjdebru1jn, i meant logs yes. I should check it. where is it located again?07:12
pmjdebru1jn(you did do 12 hours of memtest etc)07:12
m00n_urnpmjdebru1jn, mine is a thinkpad e45007:12
pmjdebru1jnbut did you already run a long memtest session07:13
m00n_urnpmjdebru1jn, I ran memtest for a hour long with it displaying 0 errors to fix.07:13
pmjdebru1jnthat's a bit short though07:13
m00n_urnpmjdebru1jn, it reacheed 100%07:13
pmjdebru1jnpresumably not even enough to complete a full run?07:13
m00n_urnpmjdebru1jn, it did complete07:13
pmjdebru1jnwithin an hour?07:14
pmjdebru1jnare you sure you look at the right diagram?07:14
m00n_urnpmjdebru1jn, yes, it told to press ESC to reboot the machine07:14
pmjdebru1jndoesn't it always do that?07:14
m00n_urnI ran memtest for the first time yesterday so07:15
pmjdebru1jnon most systems it needs multiple hours to complete07:15
m00n_urnpmjdebru1jn, well, im sure mine was completed in an hour07:16
m00n_urni guess just have to wait for xubuntu to issue updates until then I just have to deal with it07:16
pmjdebru1jnor just temporarily switch back to an older version if it didn't happen before07:17
pmjdebru1jnreinstalling is like 10mins work07:17
m00n_urnpmjdebru1jn, to 16.04?07:18
pmjdebru1jnfor example07:18
pmjdebru1jnyou said it didn't happen with an older version07:18
pmjdebru1jnanyhow, if you want to see if you can get more info https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Netconsole that might be worth trying07:18
m00n_urnpmjdebru1jn, older version of ubuntu not xubuntu. It was a 14.0407:19
pmjdebru1jnhardware support should be same between ubuntu/xubuntu07:19
m00n_urnyeah07:19
pmjdebru1jnbtw, if you system freezes, can you still switch to a proper terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1)07:19
m00n_urnand where would I check these logs again?07:19
pmjdebru1jnand does that still work07:19
pmjdebru1jnnetconsole is probably your best option07:19
m00n_urnpmjdebru1jn, tried it and it does not. The keyboard freezes too07:20
pmjdebru1jnthen netconsole if your best bet to see what might be going on07:22
m00n_urnokay07:26
m00n_urnthanks a lot07:26
arefxubuntuhi07:32

pmjdebru1jnjust ask, people will respond if they have time and/or know an answer07:33

pmjdebru1jnthat's xubuntu07:37
dqs_gentoopardon the expression no shit sherlock that is xubuntu xD07:50
knomedqs_gentoo, indeed this is a family-friendly channel - and you seem to know which expressions to avoid - so please do that08:02
dunpealHi there. I'd like to install Xubuntu 18.04. Where do I find the "minimal install" option I heard was added to 18.04?12:00
akxwi-davedunpeal:  There is an Xubuntu Core version.. which is the Xubuntu desktop and minimal programs..12:05
akxwi-davethis is available here https://unit193.net/xubuntu/12:05
akxwi-davehttps://unit193.net/xubuntu/core/  sorry here12:06
dunpealakxwi-dave: thanks!12:07
dunpealHey. I installed Xubuntu Core, and now I get the following error: http://dpaste.com/1GT97RT13:01
pmjdebru1jndunpeal: maybe the mirror is temporarily broken?13:09
pmjdebru1jnor a conection issue13:09
pmjdebru1jndid you try apt-get update again? a few minutes later?13:10
pmjdebru1jnor a different mirror13:10
installercan i read what i type?19:42
installerfinally19:42
installeri am installing a 14.xx image (32bit on a macBook late 2007 (32bit EFI). cannot find a place to put the bootloader in - is that because of Guid/GPT and no MBR?19:43
installeri let the installer claim the whole build in disk (sda)19:45
installerit says the arch is i386/mac and later the info, that the partitition label of sda is gpt. ubiquity is skipping group sda , since no volume group is found19:49
installerfor no i skipped the boot loader, but i guess i will be able to install it later anytime from live image again?19:52
donofrioinstaller - if you return, I had to use a autostart custom cdrom with plop auto configured to countdown, to a grub customized to auto count down to install from the usb key I made...it worked, I need to update for 18.04 (they did make a 32 bit for x86 still right?)22:28
