RixterOK....it's installing some codecs which I'm guessing are part of the "restricted" extras?00:01
RixterOK, has and is installing opera-stable00:01
Rixternacc: OK, that did it Opera installed!!   TNX00:07
naccRixter: yw00:07
Rixternacc:  I should change the command from apt-get install opera to apt-get install opera-stable...correct?  Pretty simple...and easy to make mistake00:09
naccRixter: well, third party package, unclear what is supported where (if at all) -- you'd need to ask opera00:11
naccRixter: but yes the simplest fix was just to use opera-stable instead of opera00:11
RixterTNX again!!00:11
Davidian1024hey there00:16
Davidian1024anyone know how to install additional drivers from the command line?00:16
Davidian1024i just upgraded to ubuntu 18.04 and it looks like the radeon driver keeps crashing when X tries to start00:17
oerhekssudo ubuntu-drivers list , or directly sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall00:17
oerheksehm, radeon, is in the kernel now00:17
Davidian1024@oerheks: ok thanks, i'll give those a shot00:18
oerheksthat would not install AMD drivers...00:18
Davidian1024that's ok00:19
Davidian1024as long as i can get the gui going for now00:19
oerhekscheck out yourself, to show what driver in use >> lspci -nnk | grep -i vga -A3 | grep 'in use'00:19
Bashing-omDavidian1024: As oerheks says, in the kernel now, there are no "additional drivers" - depending on the AMD card  the proprietary overlay onto the amd-gpu driver could be available.00:21
Davidian1024right now it's showing the Intel Corporation HD Graphics 530 [8086:191b] (rev 06) in use00:24
Davidian1024this laptop seems to have that along with an amd gpu in it00:24
oerheksi think you need to enable radeon with "radeon.modeset=1" in grub bootloader..00:26
oerheksor check your bios to set radeon as primairy GPU00:27
Davidian1024ok, gonna reboot and check the bios first.00:27

musk_oxNew to 18.04, and the Ctrl+A shortcut is frustrating me. Can't see where it's defined in Settings->Keyboard. And I feel like I have to change it, because it conflicts with bash shortcuts00:36
oerheksCtrl+A is a basic select  command, why would that bother you?00:39
musk_oxoerheks: yeah it doesn't make sense there must be something wrong with my configuration. window manager should not be showing/hiding windows with Ctrl+A00:46
Unicorn_Princesswhat's the simplest way to install ubuntu 18.04, with encryption, and dual-booting windows 7? all the guides I was able to find have a whole bunch of tricky steps00:58
Unicorn_PrincessI was hoping I could maybe install fedora 28 first - it has no trouble setting up full disk encryption alongside a win7 boot00:58
Unicorn_Princessand then install ubuntu 18.04 over the fedora partition00:59
Unicorn_Princess(reason I'm not just sticking with fedora is it only boots successfully about 30% of the time, other times it just reboots)01:01
arensI just created and uploaded something to a PPA. About how long does it take to show up in launchpad?01:01
crimson_kingUnicorn_Princess: usually there's no trick to it. Simply boot the installer, configure it as you want, select encryption/LVM, type password and go on01:01
oerheksUnicorn_Princess, all ubuntu versions support enryption, LVM01:01
crimson_kingUnicorn_Princess: The installer will recognize your Windows 7 install and ask to install Ubuntu alongside it01:02
Unicorn_Princesscrimson_king: there's no option for dual-boot -and- encryption though. if I want encryption, the only option offered by the installer is to overwrite the windows partition01:02
oerheksarens, url?01:02
Unicorn_Princessyes, if I choose the 'install alongside win7' option, it won't let me choose encryption as well01:02
oerheksUnicorn_Princess, there is.. unless windows use bitlocker, that takes whole drive01:02
Unicorn_Princessnah, my win7 is unencrypted01:03
oerheksencryption question comes after that01:03
Unicorn_Princessoh! I should mention, I have two drives, one for win7, other for linux.01:03
crimson_kingI don't know that one, and I can't test it here01:03
Unicorn_Princesshm01:03
Unicorn_Princessi'll try reinstalling again, hopefully it'll be as simple as oerheks promises :)01:04
arensoerheks: I think its because my changelog was messed up, I'll give it to you in a min if it doesn't work this time :-p01:04

cclloyd2.  It has a black X cursor instead of the pointer.02:42
oerhekscclloyd, what vnc server exactly?02:44
cclloydThe command I'm using to run:  DISPLAY=:0 ; x11vnc -xkb -noxrecord -noxfixes -noxdamage -display :0 -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -usepw -pointer_mode 102:44
oerheksone could use vncserver -geometry 1920x1080 or something like that02:44
cclloyd(I didn't originally have the -pointer_mode, I just tried that to get it to work. but it didn't)02:44
leftyfbcclloyd: are you sure you're running a desktop environment on DISPLAY 0?02:45
leftyfboerheks: he wants to connect to the existing DE. vncserver by itself just creates and empty X server02:45
cclloydNot 100% sure I'm using display 0.  When connecting I'm using the address 192.168.1.x:1, as :0 didn't connect at all.02:46
cclloydAnd adding -geometry 1920x1080 makes the window on my client larger, but just enlarges the 768p picture.02:47
leftyfbcclloyd: plug in a monitor and keyboard, login and type: echo $DISPLAY02:49
cclloydNo option to plug in a monitor right now.02:49

BerenErchamionI found this in my Update Manager for Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon Rafaela (64-bit):  kmod package:  15-Oubuntu706:26
BerenErchamionHere's the description:  "This dummy package is provided to support the transition from module-init-tools to kmod and should be removed afterwards."06:26
BerenErchamionI just want to know if I should allow it to be installed with my Update Manager or not06:27
ducasse!mint | BerenErchamion06:27
ubottuBerenErchamion: The Ubuntu channels can only provide support for Ubuntu and its official flavors, since other distributions and derivatives have repository and software changes. So please use their dedicated support venues, for example: Linux Mint (#linuxmint-help on irc.spotchat.org), Kali Linux (#kali-linux), and LXLE (#lxle)06:27
BerenErchamionI already talked to #linuxmint-help about it.  And they're not sure if I need to remove it or not, because they don't know if the removal is automatic or not06:30

EriC^spexi: type 'sudo parted -ls | nc termbin.com 9999'\08:18
spexiEriC^: does nothing but "Error: /dev/mapper/sda5_crypt: unrecognised disk label" :D08:20
spexiI found a discussion about my question, and there was an answer, that had the following as the first command: sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1024 count=1024k08:21
spexiBut what is the /dev/zero? And what is that command doing08:21
EriC^spexi: that creates a swap file full of zeros08:21
EriC^so you can use it as swap without altering the partition table just using the file08:22
EriC^a far quicker way is to use fallocate -l 8g /swapfile08:22
spexiEriC^: so... Where that example command takes the 1G of zeros, if I don't have any unused space08:22
spexiI mean, I have unused space on the disk but not unallocated08:23
ducasseit takes it from your root filesystem08:23
repyshow can I enable php in apache2 in ubuntu?08:23
EriC^it's literally just creating a file, no partition table editing at all08:23
spexiAh, okay08:23

de-factomgedmin, hmm ppl hitting a specific three letter key combo my accident? wow. well i wish i could say Xorg was stable enough that this (well known) key combination would not be required anymore, yet unfortunately its not..12:32
mancman3francisv: so that is an option. As you say 16.04 worked fine ?12:32

de-factomgedmin, i just reactivated Ctrl + Alt + Backspace with "sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration", it seems to work, but _not_ when the gray login screen after correct credentials in GDM stays indefinitely. i thought it always should kill Xorg. Do i really always have to "killall -KILL Xorg" when that happens?12:42
mancman3replace it with nomodeset (this removes graphics acceleration ) see it this works12:42
mancman3francisv: the nomodeset u add after quiet_splash i think it says. quiet splash anyway12:44
kostkon!nomodeset12:44

It builds locally with make and debuild just fine.16:09
naccarensj: 1) you are eliding most of your control file; 2) this is offtopic for this channel (IMO); 3) most likely your binary package does not specify the dependencies it needs at runtime.16:11
arensjnacc: which channel would be better? something more debian?16:11
naccarensj: building with make is not really useful in this case, as it's `dpkg-buildpackage` that's failing (building the deb not building the binary shipped by the deb)16:11

matjambut linux doesn't control the hardware, and there's a lot of developers out there that contribute their time to developing drivers17:12
matjamand not all developers have had time to implement the APIs needed for GUI config stuff to work nicely together with their driver17:12
matjamit's all volunteers17:12
thealtoidmatjam: for some reason, I don't think the problem is in the kernel driver at all.17:12
matjamfor the most part17:12
matjamthealtoid: you may be right17:12
matjamIt could be the xorg configuration17:13
thealtoidIt's in braindead handling of input devices in desktop environments. It can't be anywhere else.17:13
matjamyou'd be surprised17:13
JimBuntuthealtoid, try Option "AccelerationScheme" "none" as well.17:13

ubottuA common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter17:22
supahflyty guys ur so helpful i have no idea i primarily use windows17:25
sla3kHi there, I was having issues where my /boot directory was filling up with various kernel versions. I've now removed them and ran 'sudo apt autoremove' followed by 'sudo update-grub'. Most of the images are gone from /boot but I still see alot of "initrd.img-4.4.0-XX-generic" files. Is it safe to remove these from /boot manually or is there any other preferred way?17:31
sla3kI am using Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS17:31
enycsla3k: i'd be checking on "dpkg -l | grep linux-image-" list.. are the packages REALLY gone?17:31
enycsla3k: in some cases the entry will start 'rc' (removed but config files left)17:32
enycsla3k: in witch case dpkg -P linux-image-[...]  should remove package completely17:32
sla3kenyc: ahh, yea some are having initial rc and some have ii, yet some have rH17:33
sla3kWhat does this 'ii' and 'rH' mean anyways17:33
enycsla3k: ii = fully installed17:34
enycsla3k: iH = half-installed apparently17:34
enycsla3k: dpkg -P  will let you 'purge' an 'rc' package.   (or apt-get --purge autoremove back in the first-place)17:35
sla3kSo I am guessing if I don't need them, I should remove them all but the one that is currently in use..17:35
enycsla3k:   "dpkg --configure -a"   may help to prompt configuring half-installed packages17:35
SimonNLand keep one to fall back to if needed17:35
SimonNLsla3k: ^17:36
enycsla3k: definitely try to sort it out at the package-system-level first.   IF you have completely purged package,  and you are SURE the initrd is now left-over  you can remove it manually (you may also have /lib/modules/VERSION ) as well.....17:36
* enyc +1 to SimonNL -- you definitely want 2 "ii" 'ed kernels that work.17:36
sla3kRight, thanks for the heads up guys. I'll keep atleast 3 in case.17:37
sla3ks/3/3 ii packages17:37
SimonNLthats not needed17:37
sla3kYea, not needed but good to have in case something messes up.17:38
enycsla3k: "dpkg -l | grep -v ^ii"  will show you all packages that aren't just "fully installed" -- can be useful.17:38
NebiHi there17:39
LOLOL:hi17:39
LOLOL:cowsay test17:39
LOLOL:part17:39
LOLOL:lol17:40
NebiUnfortunately I have a major freeze issue wheen rebooting. And currently I have no clue what it is. I was trying to install the right lib for something. And at the end I tried removing them from /usr/lib17:41
Nebibut I have not touched other libraries17:41
NebiWhiel rebooting it now completely freezes before the login-screen17:42
ioriaNebi, go in recovery17:42
NebiHello, ioria17:42
Nebiioria, this time I don't think I did sth extremely stupid as last time.17:43
Nebiioria, root shell?17:43
ioriaNebi, yes17:43
Nebiioria, ok im in17:43
ioriaNebi, mount -o remount,rw /17:44
ioriaNebi, pay attention, now you are root17:44
Nebiioria, yes ok done17:45
ioriaNebi, so, what you did exactly ?17:45
Nebiioria, i wanted to use the latest version of libprotobuf17:45
ioriaNebi,  from a .deb pkg, or what ?17:46
Nebiioria, I follwed guidelines in the internet. apt removed the one in the apt. Installed it correctly. protoc --version said the right version. Python nand conda, too. But while launching an application it said that the version was not the right one17:46
Nebiioria, no i uninstalled the pkg one because it only supports an old version17:47
ioriaNebi,  how did you install it ?17:47
Nebiioria, in the end i made locate libprotobuf17:47
Nebiioria, and then went to /usr/lib  and made rm -rf libprotobuf*17:47
Nebiioria, this was the alst thing I did17:47
ioriaNebi,  how did you install it ?17:48
Nebiioria, ok I installed it in 4 ways. First downloading the linux package. Unzipping and copiying the files to locations according tot he guidelines. Then i pip install and conda install with the required versions - unisntalling the old ones first. And in the end I also tried to download another c++ package to comile it myself17:49
ioriaNebi,  dpkg -l | grep libprotobuf17:49
Nebiioria, three entried. all version 2.6. I think this is because in the very end i apt installed again when I had the freeze thinking that it is because of that17:50
Nebiioria, but version 2.6 is super old. He was telling me I had version 3.1 even though I installed version 3.5.117:50
ioriaNebi,  is the pkg name libprotobuf9v5  ?17:51
Nebiioria, libprotobuf-dev:amd64, libprotobuf-lite9v5:amd64, and libprotobuf9v5:amd6417:52
ioriaNebi,  preceded by 'ii'  or what ?17:52
Nebiioria, yes all three times17:52
ioriaNebi,  you are on xenial right ?17:52
Nebiioria, yes17:53
ioriaNebi,  apt install --reinstall libprotobuf-dev:amd64  libprotobuf-lite9v5:amd64  libprotobuf9v5:amd6417:53
ioriaNebi,  without :amd64, sorry17:54
Nebiioria, ok done17:55
ioriaNebi,  dpkg --configure -a17:55
Nebiioria, ok - no response17:56
supahflyty for helping me before i got it to work17:56
supahflyty ty ty17:56
ioriaNebi,  try exit and resume17:56
ioriabrb17:57
Nebiioria, ok im rebooting17:57
Nebiioria, freeze at reboot again17:57
ioriaNebi,  if you can open a tty, you can check logs and stuff18:02
Nebiioria, yes I have terminal and am trying to find out18:03
Nebiioria, the other libraries are for example in /usr/lib so I did not accidentally del them18:03
Nebiioria, I was rather quite carefully this time18:03
Nebiioria, also intersting is that protoc --version still tells me that I have 3.5.118:04
Exterminadorso, it's been a while that Im' trying to fix this issue, but no success until now. my laptop only works on recovery mode. using normal boot it starts throwing errors which i dont remember now (basically i don't have UI with normal boot). i'd like to "hear" all the available ideas and possible ways to debug/solve this18:05
ioriaNebi,  so the system is working, just the gui freezes ?18:05
Nebiioria, it seems so yes. I also dont see any error message as the last line in the loading (when not 'quite') is something that is OK18:06
ioriaNebi,  what happen if you restart lightdm ?18:06
ioria*s18:06
Nebiioria, just "restart lightdm"? says: unabel to connect18:07
Nebiioria, failed to connect to system bus: failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such fiel or directory18:08

sla3kOkay, I managed to remove most of the kernels and associated files/dependencies before ..81-generic. I have a question here, when I do 'uname -r' it shows me '4.4.0-81-generic' but 'linux-image-generic' in the pastebin shows '4.4.0.124.130'. Which kernel version is being used and if it is 81 then why the generic image shows it's 124.130...if that makes sense?18:11
Nebiioria, ah ok it went to loading. [ OK ] Started Braille Device Support. And now it is blinking. At least it didnt freeze entirely.18:11

naccR13ose: did mv give you an error? mounts aren't really relevant, you are just moving files around18:46

ioriaNebi,  and your kernel is 4.4 ?19:44
Nebiioria, yes19:44
ioriaNebi,  you should be already on 4.13 , but it's another issue19:45
Nebiioria, but when I upgraded it froze, so I stopped19:46
Bashing-omExterminador: System sees no faults there in the log file . this is 18.04 ? what DE  ' echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE ' ?19:46
ioriaNebi,  if you cannot login in console , you need to boot a livecd, so you can paste logs19:46
oerheksExterminador, i have the same laptop, runs fine with nouveau19:46
oerheks3758G19:47
ioriaNebi,  and stick with the repos pkgs19:48
Exterminadoroerheks: why the heck mine doesn't? any idea? :x19:48

Exterminador Bashing-om: that outputs an empty line19:49
SlidingHornsasho199: what version and flavor OS are you running?19:49
Nebiioria, ok means I have to create a bootable usb I guess19:50
sasho199SlidingHorn: I think I found the answer19:50
oerheksExterminador, curious indeed, there is no option to set intel/nvidia in the bios19:50
sasho199SlidingHorn: Thanks for your responce19:50
ioriaNebi,  i'am leaving, but mount the root partition under /mnt  , cd and expore them19:51
Exterminadorin the current status, the laptop freezes a lot19:51
oerheksmine freeses 5-8 sec after login, until desktop is read ( and wireless, and dropbox)19:51
Nebiioria, what do you mean?19:51
oerheksyou might want to do a memtest86 run19:52
Exterminadormine with nouveau drivers don't even shows the login screen (only the splash screen). with Nvidia, well, it has lots of stripes in the screen and keeps blinking/freezing constantly19:52
Nebiioria you mean not to use a bottable usb but to copy the root partition to a usb?19:52
ioriaNebi, nope,  mount your partition in /mnt , cd /mnt/var/log, an check19:53
Nebiioria ok ill do. thank you very much for your help19:53
ioriaNebi, no problem19:53

Bashing-om!nomodeset | Exterminador20:33
ubottuExterminador: A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter20:33

Exterminadoronly 25% of the 1st test lol20:40
Bashing-omExterminador: I do suggest 3 or more passes . takes time .20:41
tomreynRonaldsMazitis: the issue is that your extended area does not cover the unpartitioned space. you cannot partition that unless you increase the size of the extended area.20:41
tomreynRonaldsMazitis: i.e. sda2 needs to be resized first of all20:42
phinxyWhat is the /etc/default/console-setup config file doing, if anything?  "configuration file for setupcon"20:42

[itchyjunk]i probably need to add something to my apt so it can find these non standared stuff? thanks20:43
tomreynRonaldsMazitis: another option you always have with virtual machines (and physical servers alie, though there money is involed, and storage bays may be physically limited) is to just add a new disk20:43

tomreynRonaldsMazitis: you can add a new storage, create a file system on it, update /etc/fstab to mount the new file system in an existing location, then move the contents of this directory on the old disk to the new disk20:47
Bashing-omExterminador: K; I be here for a while yet this session :)20:47

Bashing-omNebi: Can you confirm that the LiveUSB is not corrupted ?21:03

ExterminadorBashing-om: 1st pass done. Pass:1 Errors: 0; ** Pass complete, no errors, press ESC to exit **. second pass in progress21:07
ExterminadorBashing-om: also stupid question: since Xubuntu boots perfectly with "nomodeset" there's a way to change screen size after right? I'm stuck with 640*480..21:10
crimson_kingExterminador: During installation I used nomodeset and the resolution was low. But after booting into the installed system, it was back to normal21:12
dunpealHi there. Is there a way to specify the main user's uid during the Ubuntu installation process?21:13
dunpealOr would I have to set it manually after install is done?21:13
Bashing-omExterminador: sire there is a way .. but keeping "nomodeset" is not optimal, as it defeats "kernel Mode Setting" .21:13
ExterminadorBashing-om: all i need is it to work (so I can see my series in Strem.io) xD21:14
crimson_kingExterminador: Sometimes the installer will boot to a black screen, that's when nomodeset is useful. But after installed, the kernel mode setting should do its job instead21:14
Bashing-omExterminador: what bothers me is that echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE no retun indicates a possible issue with Xorg. Xorg is the GUI !21:16

Bashing-omExterminador: When ya get done with the memtest might be a good idea here too to read X's log file .21:19
Exterminadorthe problem of using it with the recovery mode is that I don't have video acceleration and I need it to use Strem.io21:20

He was perfectly working, but for some reason, he just don't work on my pc because he isn't an HP computer! ExterminadorBashing-om: I'm considering in installing Xubuntu Xenial in another partition I have just to see if the problem goes away by itself21:58
rungcc_from_homethe -HP at the end is because the ssd is only compatible with hewllet packard computers! no idea why he was giving problems with usb, but the freezing systems and reboots when inside bios went away, also the addressing errors on USB also disapeared from dmesg.21:59

NebiOK, I'm asking for the last time today: maybe someone can help. I have a total freeze at the beginning of boot (when the logn screen should come). Before that issue I was doing for hours quite a lot of stuff. The last dangerous thing I did (just before the problem) was going to /usr/lib and typing rm -rf libprotobuf* with the aim of removing all the libprotobuf there. Before that I was trying to install version 3.5 of protobuf. While writing pro22:09
Nebitoc --version ti said it wqas 3.5 already. But while running a program it always said I was on 3.1. So I did different things. At the same time I also upgraded my gcc from 5.4 to 8. Maybe I did there something wrong? I also tried to compile caffe and openpose. I installed many libraries that were mentioned in some articles. Thats about it. I really dont know exactly what I did. And reading through the logs is currently not helping me as I dont k22:09

kilroyson101like a pic or ?  if it changes the scenario any  these are machines that were wiped by police and bought at auction i have no back up O.S to work with on these machines22:29
Bashing-omkilroyson101: A pic might just might be good enough :)22:29
Bashing-omExterminador: what returns ' apt-cache show xserver-xorg | grep Version ' ?22:30
kilroyson101kk ill take a shot of it with cell and ill be back  ty bashing-om   definitely appreciated,22:30
Bashing-omkilroyson101: Gotta be a reason .22:31
ExterminadorBashing-om: Version: 1:7.7+19ubuntu722:31
Jordan_Ukilroyson101: Are you sure that these computers have hard drives? Often the way that organizations ensure that no data gets leaked is by simply removing the hard drive before selling them on.22:33
Bashing-omExterminador: that is correct .. and are the modules available ? pastebin ' cat /etc/initramfs-tools/modules ' .22:34
NebiCould it be that running 'sudo ldconfig' it caused a freeze at boot?22:36
ExterminadorBashing-om: weirdly, no modules: http://termbin.com/1ofo22:37
Bashing-omExterminador: default .. I had expected perhaps to see nvidia ?? Back to the drawing board .22:38
Bashing-omExterminador: Got a config file ( should NOT ) ' ls /etc/X11/Xorg.conf ' anything mvidia here 'ls /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d ' ?22:42
ExterminadorBashing-om: inside /etc/X11 there's no Xorg.conf. inside /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d there's a few files including nvidia.drm.outputclass-ubuntu.conf22:45
Bashing-omExterminador: We should be good ... humm .. How about we revert back explicitly to nouveau driver . from there see what we can find ?22:47
ExterminadorBashing-om: how to do that? apt remove --purge nvidia* only?22:47
ExterminadorBashing-om: or should I go to Software & Updates and choose Xorg there?22:48
Johnakis this the place to ask if i have questions on my ubuntu?22:49
Bashing-omExterminador: Yes, and then explictly make sure the nouvea driver installs ' sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau ' watching for error reports .22:50
Bashing-omExterminador: Command line ' apt remove --purge nvidia* '22:50
Bashing-om .22:50
ExterminadorBashing-om: right away.22:51
Bashing-omJohnak: most assurdedly .. ubuntu ask .22:51
Johnakmy wlan0 does not show up in the "iwconfig", but my "lsusb" and "inxi -nx" says they can see this wifi adapter, has anyone and any similar problem?22:54
ExterminadorBashing-om: apt install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau said it's already installed22:56
Bashing-omExterminador: reboot and still with bad graphic's ?22:56
Exterminadorit's rebooting22:57
Nebiguys an important question: could the freeze be caused because I typed 'sudo apt-get autoremove ?22:57
www_no22:58
Bashing-omNebi: I would not think so .. the package manager only looks for things it "can" remove .22:58
ExterminadorBashing-om: no bad graphics, but a black screen instead. :/22:59
NebiBashing-om, OK thanks for the info.22:59
LinuxGuy2020Hello I was wondering if there is a way for an average user to convert a deb package along with dependencies into a snap package. Command line is fine as long as its not rocket science.22:59
Bashing-omExterminador: show a new Xorg.conf file . I am out of time and must cut grass, I be back in an hour or so .23:00
ExterminadorBashing-om: what I can see here is that "nomodeset" makes it work but I have low graphics resolution. if at least I could change screen resolution even with "nomodeset" enabled. pastebin on its way23:01
ExterminadorBashing-om: http://termbin.com/b0cx23:03
Exterminadoroops23:03
Exterminadorwrong file23:03
ExterminadorBashing-om: I don't have any Xorg.conf file23:05
kilroyson101how would one upload picture from comp to the chat ? got the pics   Bashing-om23:08

kilroyson1012.18.1213 version of rufus and the 14.04.4 and 18.04 versions of ubuntu     /  so you think switching the formatting program will yield different result ?23:24
compdocits what i use23:24
NebiOK, I will go to bed now. I posted my problem under the following link if someone might want to help: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1037166/freeze-at-login-screen-ubuntu-16-04-unknown-reason-after-doing-many-things23:24

puffI'm having trouble getting my kindle fire to mount via MTP.23:31
puffWhen I plug my kindle fire in via USB cable, I get "Unable to open MTP device '[usb:002,006]'"23:32
www_install mtp tools23:32
puffHm, in dmesg, I see it recognizing the kindle fire, then: [183041.198292] ata4: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x4040000 action 0xe frozen23:34
puffI already have mtp-tools installed.23:34
naccpuff: that message implies a hardware fault occurred. Are you using the cable that came with your Kindle?23:38
naccpuff: have you tried other USB ports on your machine, some may be underpowered. If a laptop, is the laptop plugged in (this also changes port behavior, broad strokes)23:39
Exterminadornacc: by any chance do you know how to force a specific screen resolution even with nomodeset enabled?23:41
naccExterminador: have you tried with xrandr?23:42
Exterminadornope. how should I proceed?23:43
PastorBonesHey guys...I accidentally chown / but was able to stop it quick. /lib64 and /tmp were changed. I booted LiveCD, fixed ownership...still won't boot. Any suggestions?23:44
gambl0recan anyone recommend a simple lightweight easy to use video editor for ubuntu?23:45
RoadRunnertrying to unmount an fs to shrink a lvm partition but seem to be making a mistake in my command syntax: "sudo umount /dev/sda5/xubuntu-vg/lvm2 pv".  Where "dev/sda5 "is the partition, "xubuntu-vg" the mount point and "lvm2 pv" the file system. Where is my mistake?23:50
matjamRoadRunner: just umount the mount path23:51
matjamif its mounted to /xubuntu-vg (you need to use the absolute path) then umount /xubuntu-vg23:51
matjamof course if the filesystem is in use it will not let you.23:52
RoadRunnermatjam: I booted from a live cd and am following the example syntax here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/196125/how-can-i-resize-an-lvm-partition-i-e-physical-volume : "sudo umount /dev/vg_blah/lv_blah"23:53
matjamthat will work just don't put anything after it23:54
matjamtype "mount" to see whats mounted, exactly, and use the path there23:54
michaelroseso why exactly did ubuntu copy that idiotic pull up to get rid of lockscreen gesture from windows?23:57
matjamI don't know23:58
RoadRunnermatjam: figuring out the correct path is the problem for me; I thought GParted gave it under "mount point". "mount" lists a ton of stuff and no dev/sda5 is evident23:58
matjamI replaced GDM with LightDM to get rid of it.23:59
matjamRoadRunner: well you're using lvm so the underlying device won't be mounted23:59
