courrierI've installed dnsmasq setting its name to "myname.mytld", I've also manually set /etc/hostname to "myname", now sudo is complaining all the time because it's unable to resolve host, is it because hostname should be "myname.mytld" instead of "myname"?00:39

bn_workhi, is anyone familiar with logrotate 3.8.7?  For some reason some of the log files (ex: `bootstrap.log`, `ufw.log`, `kern.log`) become 0 bytes (see attached .conf files) https://www.irccloud.com/pastebin/cz6yAAUN/logrotate.conf00:57
courrierit looks like it's trying to get an IP from DHCP while it's the DHCP itself00:57
timypcrso you are also using dnsmasq as a DHCP service as well?00:58
bn_workIs it because of the `create` statement?00:58
timypcrif its set up as a DHCP service you should be using a static IP address00:59
timypcrI only use dnsmasq as a recursive DNS server and let my router handle the DHCP01:00
courriertimypcr: yes I'm using the DHCP server as well01:01
bn_workThat would explain why `kern.log` is 0 bytes but I don't understand why the other files would be 0 bytes?01:02

courrierit's set as static on both RJ45 interfaces http://paste.debian.net/1026030/01:02

foo357Hello, I have upgraded a 14.04 LTS computer to 16.04. After the update there's some problem with the network interface, 'ifconfig' only lists the loopback interface.06:00
mbi_12345morn06:02
mbi_12345ings06:02
foo357My first guess is that this can hopefully be easily solved by 'reinitializing' the network settings, i.e. triggering  the OS to rediscover/renew network settings. But I don't remember well how you do that.06:04
foo357I just saw now that if I run 'ifconfig -a' I also see a interface named 'ens32' and it has no ip-adress.06:07
Two_Dogsfoo357: how did you manage networking on 14.04?06:14
Two_Dogsfoo357: the naming convention of network devices changed to new method06:16
Two_Dogss/devices/connections06:16
foo357Two_Dogs: I'm not too sure unfortunately. It should be automatic (or whatever is the default in ubuntu 12.04 LTS), I have some possibility to dig down and look this up. ip adress should be obtained by DHCP.06:17
foo357Two_Dogs: yes I read something about a renaming when I looked into the problem.06:18
Two_Dogsfoo357: does the issue system connect to internet?06:18
foo357Two_Dogs: No, it cannot do it right now since it has no working network interface (ignoring the loopback if)06:19
Two_Dogsfoo357: does the issue system connect to internet? how did system connect before upgrade?06:20
foo357Two_Dogs: nothing special really, just a common wired network connection.06:21
Two_Dogsfoo357: ok06:22
Two_Dogsfoo357: drill down to file /etc/network/interfaces , does file exist?06:24
foo357Two_Dogs: yes it exists. Two interfaces are in it (lo and eth0). But now I see that eth0 seems to be configured to use a static ip adress.06:26
foo357That's a bit odd, I would think eth0 should be configured for dhcp.06:26
Two_Dogsfoo357: your networking setup has a router ahead of your system?06:26
foo357Two_Dogs: yes.06:27
matjamfoo357: you should be able to rename the interface in /etc/network/interfaces to ens32 and do an ifup ens3206:29
Two_Dogsfoo357:  copy/paste & execute via terminal> ifconfig ## which interface replaced eth0/1?06:30
pantatohttps://paste.debian.net/1026054/ anyone know what's going on here?06:31
pantatomy regular update failed06:32
foo357Two_Dogs: you mean I should run "ifconfig ens32" (ens32 seems to be the new name for the default wired network connection)06:32
Two_Dogsfoo357: ifconfig ## alone should show all06:33
foo357Two_Dogs: "ifconfig" only lists the loopback interface. But if I add "-a" it also lists ens32, some information is: it has an hardware adress, no traffic (0 packets sent/received)06:36
foo357Two_Dogs: (also, ens32 does not have an ip-adress )06:37
geniiThe -a means "show all" which means show the ones which also have not been brought up/activated06:37
Two_Dogshttps://git.io/vhULr foo357 something to try06:37
geniifoo357: Is it supposed to auto-get an IP ?06:38
foo357Two_Dogs: I have an idea: edit /etc/network/interfaces and fix it up, change eth0 to ens32 in the file, and change it from static ip configuration to dhcp.06:38
Two_Dogsfoo357: excellent thought06:38

nikolamunrecovered, it's just my opinion. Both BTRFS and ZFS are Copy on write, have snapshots and send, one is part of Linux kernel other is supported by Ubuntu. One is still in development, other is long time stable across many platforms. I say, get the best of both worlds, use Btrfs for system, because it is supporte din kernel and ZFS for data to be able to share it across systems.10:00

blackflowunrecovered: I wouldn't trust btrfs at all. ZFS is well supported on Ubuntu, I have some machines even running encrypted ZFS root. I ZFS all the things.10:08
Triffid_HunterI've used btrfs on all my systems since 2012, never had a single problem with it (under gentoo anyway).. I hear ubuntu only recently had kernels new enough for it to be mostly stable though10:09
nikolamblackflow, I am interested in ZFS root, yet is it actually supported by Ubuntu to have Root on ZFS? How to you manage Boot Environments on ZFS/Ubuntu if you do?10:10
nikolamTriffid_Hunter, yes, Have been using Btrfs that long too, even live migrated to RAID1 etc.10:10
blackflownikolam: it's supported in the way that zfs is part of the kernel image, pre-built in step with the kernel (so no potential DKMS issues borking the boot), and initramfs understands it so root on zfs is possible. As for BEs, I don't think they're supported, and that's something that I guess should be done in grub.10:11
nikolamI am used to illumos Boot environments on ZFS for such a long time. Not seeing that, except snapshots on Linux.10:11
blackflownikolam: personally, I solve the BE problem with a set of custom initramfs scripts which I use anyway to unlock the encrypted root pool over ssh remotely. there I can also select the snapshot to boot.10:12
nikolamYes, also update procedures need to understand ZFS internals, to create new BE in a cloned one, activate it, etc. it is different paradigm for Linux.10:12
nikolamYeah, you boot off from datasets, snapshots are read-only by default in Zfs :P10:13
blackflownikolam: indeed, but I don't think any CoW system is supported that way? It would, ineed, be nice if apt for example would make automatic snapshots before updates.10:13
nikolamblackflow, yes, I were using that thing in Opensolaris/Openindiana for years. But it's out of scope for Ubuntu talk.10:14
blackflownikolam: yes BEs are datasets, but snapshotted (clones are snapshot based), so... :)10:15
nikolamSo you boot off the clone :P it's r-w :P10:15
blackflowyeah.10:15
nikolamGreat thing you shared this about booting off ZFS without dkms, thanks blackflow10:16
blackflowanyway, I was really hoping the support for zfs to increase over the years since 16.10, but that never happened. Instead Canonical is more interested in NIH-ing new software like netplan and subiquity, so it'll be another few years before that is even remotely considered I guess.10:16
nikolamI used to use 'beadm' from illumos to manage BE's and have Ubuntu living inside BE for a short period of time. I may try that again.10:18
blackflow(what's worse, the new installer has even less features, so I really don't get the point of doing all that instead of evolving what you already got, but eh. I debootstrap all my installations so I don't care really).10:18
nikolamblackflow, also that "encrypted root pool " is interesting. Do youa ctually encrypt ZFS datasets? (openZFS encryption is available from Delphix I think, but not upstreamed yet, I think)10:19
blackflownikolam: I use LUKS. ZFS's own encryption is highly experimental at this point, and some related issues on ZoL github are scary :)10:19
nikolamI think Delphix use OpenZFS dataset encryption in their production for their customers for something close to two years, but yes, they didn't finishe-released it yet.10:20
blackflowisn't Delphix based on FreeBSD?10:21
blackflowDelphix' implementation of openzfs I mean10:21
nikolamNo they use illumos. OpenZFS is cross-platform itself.10:21
blackflownikolam: yeah but not all implementations of openzfs are the same. eg, there are differences between ZoL and FreeBSD10:22
blackflowthey both have OpenZFS the project as upstream, yes.10:22
blackflows/both/all10:22
nikolamblackflow, sure, thay all have their patches. but that "Feature flags" thing solves incompatibilities if new features are in for datasets.10:22
blackflownikolam: yeah, that.10:23
blackflowminus an occasional bug in ZoL that prevents zfs send|recv between ZoL in artful/xenial  and  FreeBSD :)10:23
nikolamOnly thing I have seen after 18.04 install in Ubuntu is a problem with recognizing older ZFS datasets (got to see how old), other then that it works10:24
blackflowfixed in Bionic with 0.7.5, thankfully.10:24
nikolamblackflow, ah didn't know that. great.10:24
blackflownikolam: bug #173323010:24
ubottubug 1733230 in zfs-linux (Ubuntu) "'zfs recv' hangs when receiving from a FreeBSD zfs" [Low,Incomplete] https://launchpad.net/bugs/173323010:24
blackflowit's actually a problem in ZoL that was fixed in the 0.7.x branch, and so far that was the only problem for shared ZFS pools with same feature flags, that I encountered.10:25
nikolamThis one is #177109110:26
blackflownikolam: how much older pools? I upgraded an artful root on encrypted zpool to bionic test server, and it all went well.10:27

RoadRunnerhow to defragment an hd or partition?19:02
syborgRoadRunner, what kind of filesystem are you trying to defrag?19:03
RoadRunnerext419:04
syborgHere https://askubuntu.com/questions/221079/how-to-defrag-an-ext4-filesystem19:04
syborgthat said, I doubt you need to RoadRunner19:05
syborgI am not sure if you are aware, but ext4 is pretty good at avoiding excessive fragmentation19:05
lotuspsychjeRoadRunner: you have a mechanical hd or ssd?19:06
RoadRunnersyborg: so its done automaticallly then?19:06
RoadRunnerlotuspsychje: mechanical hd19:07
syborgNo RoadRunner, ext4 has built in techniques to avoid fragmentation. It isn't like NTFS or fat32 where defragmentation is a typical maintenance task19:07
matjamI've never had to defrag an ext4 filesystem19:08
RoadRunnersyborg: good to know; so there is never a need for manual intervention?19:09
syborgProbably not RoadRunner, unless you are experiencing read/write performance issues and the partition is pretty full (85% or so) and has been in use for a long time19:11

panter_How can you change the .desktop file of a 'snap' package. It is mounted on a 'read-only' file system at /dev/loop16, which makes it impossible to change it. I am not able to remount it read and write.19:21
pragmaticenigmapanter_: you can't change a file you don't have write permissions to19:23
panter_pragmaticenigma: Why don't they want you to be able to change it?19:26
naccpanter_: so the experience is controlled, presumably19:27
naccpanter_: what do you want to change about it?19:27
panter_I want to have it gone, because the snap is an application that is only used by another application, not by me and it shows up first in gnome when I type the first letters of it.19:28
naccpanter_: dunno if that's possible currently, you can ask in #snappy19:28
pragmaticenigmaIf this was 16.04, you could hide it by creating a .desktop file in your user folder that overrides the other .desktop19:28
syborgpanter_, /dev/loop16 is a loop device. A loop device mounts an existing file on your filesystem (the snap image). You need to edit the snap image, by the sound of it. I have no experience with snaps though19:28

leftyfbbacknforth: how did you install it?20:24
backnforthleftyfb,  I don't remember. Using the package manager probably.20:24
luxiohow do I encrypt my ubuntu installation20:24
lotuspsychje!encrypt | luxio20:25
ubottuluxio: For information on setting up encrypted private directories (8.10+) see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EncryptedPrivateDirectory20:25

backnforthI tried apt-get remove php as well20:26
okdana_what makes you think it's still installed?20:26

backnforthawesome thanks20:29
okdana_rip20:29
backnforthgoing to php 7.120:29
leftyfbbacknforth: why?20:30
backnforthleftyfb,  because I'm worried some Drupal modules might not support php 7.220:30
leftyfbbacknforth: I wouldn't recommend downgrading things like php. There could be serious security implications20:30
leftyfbbacknforth: might I suggest TRYING it before assuming it won't work20:31
backnforthphp 7.1 will still be supported for another year20:31
leftyfbbacknforth: why go backward based on an assumption?20:31
backnforthleftyfb,  I don't want to be tinkering20:32
backnforthand some modules haven't been updated since December of 201720:32
matjambacknforth: php is generally compatible in a point release20:32
okdana_i would be surprised if they weren't compatible, there were not many bc-breaking changes between 7.1 and 7.2, and most of the ones there were were pretty esoteric20:32
matjambacknforth: and the latest in a point release often has important security fixes.20:32
backnforthI've seen problems with Drupal before where when I was getting bugs with php 7.2 but not php 7.120:33
leftyfbbacknforth: spin up a container and test it20:33
okdana_that said, i have used non-latest versions of php from ondrej's ppa for ages and never had issues :shrug:20:33
leftyfbbacknforth: pretty sure 7.1 isn't available in the official 18.04 repo. You'll be "tinkering" to shoehorn it into the distro20:33
backnforthleftyfb,  yeah but that's a whole lot less tinkering in the future20:35
backnforthwhen trying to figure out how some parts don't work20:35
leftyfbbacknforth: suit yourself. I don't mess around when it comes to publicly accessible websites utilizing things like php20:36
Guest93655anyone familiar with kexec-tools and setting it to true to run on shutdown? I was wanting to set it up to run memtest86 on shutdown20:39
Guest93655maybe APPEND="/usr/lib/memtest86+/memtest86+.elf"     ? does that command look right?20:40
backnforthleftyfb,  I don't know what I should do man. I think both ideas are awesome.20:41
leftyfbbacknforth: I told you what to do. Spin up a container and test your drupal code with php 7.220:41
backnforthwill do20:43
Jordan_UGuest93655: Are you sure that memtest86+ will even work with Kexec? I wouldn't expect it to.20:44
Guest93655kexec i thought it just like a kernel that can run programs20:44
Guest93655kexec apparently it can i think tails has used or it experimented with it20:44
Jordan_UGuest93655: memtest86+ relies heavily on BIOS interrupts, wheras linux has native drivers for accessing hardware. I would expect linux to be able to handle being loaded via kexec much better than memtest86+.20:47
Guest93655tails is debian but i think I am going to ask in there20:48
Guest93655there is a way because they have tested it20:48

* tomreyn knows nothing about video recording but can still provide generic answers to generic questions ;-)23:12
Two_Dogseelstrebor: just about any web-cam should work23:13
Two_Dogseelstrebor: your graphics card along with some recorder app23:14
raidghostnacc: Running ubuntu on a ubuntu-server machine23:14
raidghostcifs mounted my raid. but for some weird reason its slow as a turtle.23:15
naccraidghost: so you are cifs mounting a host's disk into a VM?23:16
kunjiTwo_Dogs: He could be asking which video capture cards have working driver support?23:17
Two_Dogskunji: yeah, he dont seem keen on clarifying23:18
eelstreborTwo_Dogs, actually, i'm trying to figure out how to connect a roku to my PC so that I don't have to go buy another TV23:24
Two_Dogseelstrebor: roku allows device to talk to a pc how?23:26
Two_Dogseelstrebor: roku as server?23:26
Two_Dogsi kodi23:27
yuppieyeah so this whole preseed thing isn't working out too well23:33
yuppiejust reboots into initramfs23:34
yuppiethen i start to uncover there are a bunch of EFI commands for it...23:34
yuppienot sure what to believe23:34
yuppienot very well documented23:34
yuppienow it dropped me into a black screen with a blinking cursor23:36
naccyuppie: preseed is just a format for telling ubuntu what to install23:36
naccyuppie: it's not anything about how to boot your system or otherwise23:37
yuppienacc: i understand that23:37
yuppieim using preseed to automate the installation process23:37
yuppiehowever, when i create an LVM using preseed, it seems GRUB isn't being installed correctly23:37
yuppieim not sure how to find out why23:37
yuppienacc: i found these options: https://dpaste.de/0CVc23:40
yuppiebut uncommenting them didn't help me23:41
naccyuppie: are you using EFI?23:41
yuppieyes23:41
yuppiebut i dont need to23:41
yuppiekinda just want to get to the login screen23:41
yuppieinstall completes successfully, so im thinking my issue is with grub23:42
naccyuppie: you should do a manual install, then run `debconf-get-selections` afte ryou install23:42
yuppiei just need to find the right set of grub options23:42
naccyuppie: then see what it tells you you selected23:42
naccyuppie: possibly you aren't use the efi installer image?23:42
naccyuppie: so you might have installed grub instead of grub-efi or whatever23:42
yuppiecan you point me to the efi installer image?23:43
yuppiei didnt know they were different for desktop23:43
mattzabHello, I'm trying to reauthor a live disc using Cubic. First, can this be done with the 64Mb mini.iso image?23:44
naccyuppie: i'm not 100% if that's true, just a thought i had23:44
yuppieyeah i dont think its true23:44
naccyuppie: and to be sure, you're using the amd64 iso, etc?23:45
yuppieyes23:45
yuppieim going to try the manual install and then the get selections command23:45
mattzabI'm using the amd64 iso... :)23:46
naccyuppie: yeah, that's what i'd start with (make sure it does install fine manually using that image)23:46
naccyuppie: just don't pass a preseed, and it should boot into the installer and you can do it manually23:46
mattzabI'm having trouble with getting Cubic to work. Is this the right place to ask? I got crickets on AskUbuntu.com23:47
naccmattzab: is it an ubuntu package?23:48
yuppienacc: i understand that, but the whole point is to automate as much as possible, i'll eventually install to hundreds of machines this way23:48
yuppieso i need preseed to work properly eventually23:48
naccyuppie: right, but it doens't make sense tojump to that before you have a working install :)23:48
mattzabnacc: yes it is an Ubuntu package. (It might be a PPA now that I think of it)23:48
naccmattzab: if it's a ppa, then you need to consult the ppa owner for support23:49
kunjiNever heard of cubic, can you give us a link to a project page or something so I can see what it is exactly?23:49
mattzabnacc: would you mind scanning my AskUbuntu question right quick? I'm not sure if it's a problem with the software or the OS... https://askubuntu.com/questions/1038558/how-can-i-select-an-iso-file-to-use-with-cubic23:49
kunjimattzab: I don't think I would recommend using synaptic anymore...23:52
naccmattzab: i've never used cubic, sorry23:53
kunjiDefinitely is from a ppa https://askubuntu.com/questions/741753/how-to-use-cubic-to-create-a-custom-ubuntu-live-cd-image23:53
mattzabkunji: no more synaptic? What should I use instead, now?23:53
lapagasynaptic is fine23:54
naccmattzab: i think you should contact https://launchpad.net/~cubic-dev23:55
mattzabRight, from ppa. But, in selecting a file, doesn't every program typically just use the default file manager to select a file? ie. upload an image through browser, select iso file for cubic, etc.23:55
mattzabhttps://i.stack.imgur.com/1wL3g.png23:55
kunjilapaga: They've renovated?23:55
naccmattzab: not necessarily23:55
mattzabnacc: I'll do that. Thanks.23:55
naccmattzab: you *might* also try starting it from the terminal, and then seeing if an error is shown23:56
kunjimattzab: Yeah, I think so.. could be that it then tries to mount the iso and failed, I'm not sure what the default support for a loopback iso9660 is, if that has changed or not...23:56
mattzabkunji: it doesn't look like it's trying to do anything. I double click the iso, and nothing happens. The file selection menu remains as if I've not selected anything.23:58
mattzabI'll check out terminal, and I'll also swap out the default file manager.23:58
=== syborg is now known as syb0rg
kunjimattzab: I've never actually tried using anything other than nautilus... so maybe that does affect that.23:59
