bobdobbsHi all. I posted this a few hours ago on askubuntu. I have a strong suspicion that something is up with the nvidia drivers on my system. But I don't know what my next diagnostic steps should be:   https://askubuntu.com/questions/1040002/after-update-to-18-04-applications-constantly-freeze10:43
Younderbobdobbs, have you asked NVIDIA?10:53
bobdobbsYounder: I didn't think about checking nvidia support channels specifically. So no.10:54
Younderafter all canoical has no control over the code they write10:54
bobdobbstrue10:54
bobdobbsHowever, I figured that people within the ubuntu community might have encountered the issue ahead of me.10:55
bobdobbsBut yeah, I'll see what support there is for ubuntu within the nvidia community10:55
bobdobbsoh wait. before I do that I should probably ask: how do I know if the drivers for my nvidia card are actually distributed by nvidia, and not by ubuntu dev?10:57
YounderI use NVIDIA, but have chosen to wait a little with the upgrade to 18.04 upgrade 1 appears, give the driver supporters a bit of a chance to catch up. (in july)10:57
CheezI'm using nvidia on 18.04 without any real issues, at least, portal 2 works - that's the only game ive tried.10:58
bobdobbssounds like a wise choice Younder10:58

guest___i can see ubuntu in boot manager even after removing it11:05
Younderbobdobbs, anyhow the new drivers mostly involve support for the Volta technology. You might try an loder driver.11:07
Younder^older11:07
RegularNotGuesthey, my desktop files aren't working! when I click them, they ask me if I want to run it in terminal11:09
bobdobbsYounder: how would I go about switching to a older driver?11:10
guest___ufei vs leagacy which is best for a new laptop ?11:11
longwordPersonally, I'd stick with legacy unless your main disk is >2TB11:13
BluesKajguest uefi is usually best if you're dual booting with Windows , otherwise legacy should work11:15
Younderbobdobbs, In the old days I would just dowload the old driver from the cite and install it. Today you usually get their apt repository and and update from there. The downside is, of course, that it only works until the next update arrives. I would gambe that they have fixed it by then, and to be sure follow up with an error report to nvidia11:17
bobdobbsYounder: if it's a common issue (and I wouldn't suspect my encounter with it to be particularly novel) then yeah, I'd expect an update soon11:18
bobdobbsBut I'm unfamilair with the landscape and the tooling. So I'm still trying to figure out which driver I actually have and who the vendor is. I'm also looking around the nvidia forum11:19
BluesKajbobdobbs, fot driver in use run this: lspci -nnk | grep -i vga -A3 | grep 'in use' , include the quotes11:24

avallarki have the additional drivers for my nvidia installed, but ubuntu doesnt load them. When I tried modprobe it says required key is not available, pointing towards secure boot. Any way out of this?16:48
arooniso the only way to upgrade from 16.04 is to 1) wait till july/august for the point release? 2) upgrade to 17.10 then again to 18.04 ?  hoping that upgrading could solve the terrible inconsistency in suspend/resume on my thinkpad16:52
longwordarooni, straight from 16.04 to 18.04 now does work well for most - sudo do-release-upgrade -d16:55

texlaJordan_U, Only worried because it shows some error17:13
Jordan_Utexla: I wouldn't personally invest too much time in looking then. "dmesg" might show something, though that should be captured in journalctl also. You could use a phone to video tape booting then look frame by frame.17:15
texlaJordan_U, I looked at dmesg could not find anything..I will now leave it along17:16

ericrajuinhello, is it normal for disabled snap still shows up as a loop device?19:30
ioriaericrajuin, maybe it's core19:30
guideXsafesquid keeps saying,  'libgmp.so.3 not found please install dependencies and try again19:31
guideXbut what do I install19:31
jmomguideX, apt install libmemcached-dev19:35
guideXok thanks19:36

Eca_flipette*o*19:36
Eca_flipettere19:38
Eca_flipetteI'm looking to take a snapshot of a video, that longs 10sec. I have it in mp4...19:39
guideXhmm same problem19:39
Eca_flipetteHow to snapshot it ?19:39
Eca_flipette?...19:39
guideXso, I thought there's a way to make the dependencies auto install sometimes19:39
jmomguideX, sudo apt install libgmp-dev : this should work19:40
Crukhi there everyone19:43
Cruk:)19:43
tomreynhello Cruk19:43
jmomguideX, find /usr/lib/ -name "libgmp*"19:43
CrukI have installed ubuntu on my USB drive and I chose the USB drive itself to be the location where bootloader will be installed. But Ubuntu has decided that it might be best to messup the local systems boot by installing the bootloader to the hard disk19:44
CrukNow the usb is not bootable from other PCs19:44
Crukand this systems boot is messed up19:44
Crukhow can I fix this situation?19:45
tomreynhmm, that sounds bad. did the installe rnot ask you where to install the boot loader?19:45
CrukYes, I told it to install it on to the USB19:45
jmomCruk, u want /boot on the usb and set the bootload aswell for the usb and you should be good.19:45
Crukbut the usb is only bootable on the machine where it was installed19:45
tomreynCruk: which ubuntu release is this, and desktop or server?19:46
Cruk18 LTS desktop19:46
tomreyndo you mean 18.04?19:46
Cruktomreyn: yes19:46
tomreynso you used the default desktop installer. is this an amd64 architecture? or rather an ARM device or something else?19:47
Cruktomreyn: Yes the default installer. this is amd6419:47
tomreynCruk: okay, and do you have uefi or a legacy bios?19:48
Cruktomreyn: uefi19:48
tomreynokay, this should be anough information for me to try and reproduce this (later).19:48
tomreynif you think you actually made a mistake, though, please point it out so i wont waste any time.19:49
tomreynnow for how to proceed: whil running from the installation on your usb stick, run grub-install against the usb-stick itself.19:50
tomreynCruk: lsblk will list those storage devices linux knows about. you could post the output here using: lsblk | pastebinit19:51
Cruktomreyn: ok, I downloaded the iso , burned it onto a dvd, using poweriso, booted up the laptop, started the default installer, chose 'something else' when it asked where to install the OS, then I formatted the USB, and chose the usb stick for where to install the boot loader. But ubuntu decided to install the boot loader onto the disk rather than the hard disk where I asked it to.19:51
tomreyn(and then just post the url returned here)19:51
fishcookererror occured while mounting /boot/efi...19:51
jmomCruk, u want /boot on the usb and set the bootload aswell for the usb and you should be good.19:51
Crukjmom: you mean I should move the boot from the hard disk (if any) on to the usb stick and it will be ok?19:52
tomreynCruk: thanks for summing it up again.19:52
tomreynCruk: is /boot not on the usb stick then?19:53
Cruktomreyn: Ubuntu is so much fun!19:53
CrukSuch an entertainment19:53
Cruktomreyn: yes there is a boot folder on the usb stick19:54
Crukonly other pcs are not able to boot from it19:54
tomreynCruk: ok. so just install grub to the usb stick19:54
tomreyn...while running off it19:54
jmomCruk, no i mean.. you should create a seperate /boot ext3 or ext4 and then set the boot loader to the usb /dev/sdd not the /boot /dev/sdd119:55
tomreynjmom: how do you know what Cruk's sdd is?19:55
jmomCruk, /dev/sd*19:55
Eca_flipette*O* |M| [G]19:55
tomreynjmom: why the separate /boot ?19:56
CrukI got it19:56
Eca_flipetteYou juste need to do : sudo grub-install /dev/sda ; but be careful for your windows - this command will install the grubUEFI bootloader to default HDD boot sector... ! Check your Basic Input/Output System configuration before doing anything19:56
guideXhuh, safesquid is still saying the same, 'libgmp.so.3 not found"19:56
Crukyou mean I should have created a boot partition on the stick?19:57
Eca_flipetteto enter in the command menu you need to access you motherboard...19:57
Sven_vBwhen systemd decides to boot Ubuntu xenial 16.04.4 into an emergency shell, how do I ask it why it thinks I'd need an emergency shell?19:57
Crukjmom: ?19:57
tomreynEca_flipette: how do you know what sda points to for Cruk?19:57
Eca_flipetteIn general, sda is (hd0,0)19:57
Eca_flipettewhere grub usually install19:58
Eca_flipette+s;19:58
tomreynnot neccessarily, no.19:58
Two_DogsguideX: install libgmp, or is it installed now?19:58
guideXI have installed it, but I donn't know exactly what I need19:59
tomreynCruk: so i still recommend you post the lsblk output.19:59
tomreyn...so that we can identify the right target device19:59
guideXI've installed 'libgmp-dev'20:00
jmomtomreyn, i know you dont have to but i have had trouble in the past like him.. seperating fixes this for me20:00
guideXand libmemcached-dev20:00
Two_DogsguideX: perhaps its a version issue, the app wants specific libgmp , the ..so.3 thing, which version of libgmp is installed?20:00
jmomguideX, find /usr/lib/ -name "libgmp*"20:00
tomreynjmom: well Cruk has a /boot on the usb stick already, just need to make sure the kernels went there and not onto the hdd.20:01
tomreyn+ install grub to the stick20:01
tomreynkernels + grub config, that is20:02
Cruktomreyn: https://pastebin.com/TNu84rsa20:02
jmomtomreyn, i see what your saying and probably alot easier than installing again too :)20:02
tomreynCruk: when you ran lsblk, had you booted into the usb stick? i.e. was linux running from the usb stick at this time?20:03
tomreynjmom: let's hope it actually works, too ;)20:03
Cruktomreyn: yes from the USB20:03
Sven_vB… turned out it wanted some flags changed in fstab, then explicitly reboot. (it won't detect the changes until reboot.)20:04
jmomtomreyn, i believe in you ;)20:04
tomreynCruk: there are two storages mentioned (besides the optical drive), namely sda and sdb. sda is 470 GB, sdb is 8 GB. i assume the usb stuick is usb then?20:04
tomreynjmom: :) thanks20:05
tomreynCruk: i meant to write: i assume the usb stuick is *sdb* then?20:05
Cruktomreyn: yeap20:05
tomreynCruk: do you still agree?20:06
Cruktomreyn: with what? :)20:06
Two_Dogshttps://goo.gl/X5vtwy Cruk i have kept one of these lives handy since having it recommended to me as the failsafe grub fixer20:07
tomreynCruk: i initially wrote "i assume the usb stuick is usb then?", which you agreed to (but it did not make sense due to a mistake i made). i then corrected my mistake, writing "i assume the usb stuick is *sdb* then?". do you agree with this conclusion?20:07
tomreynCruk: here's the samequestion, put simpler:do you think the 8 GB storage device 'sdb' is your usb stick?20:09
Cruktomreyn: oh yes the usb is sdb20:10
Crukand sdb is usb20:10
tomreynCruk: okay. according to the lsblk output, unfortunately, sdb has only a single file system on it, no partition table and no /boot (in contrary to what you stated earlier).20:11
Cruktomreyn: you mean in contrary to asking the installer to install the bootloader to usb?20:11
CrukWell it didn't actually allow me to brother20:12
CrukNow I am going to make a boot partition using gparted20:12
tomreynCruk: my current theory is that you manually partitioned sdb and chose to install the / (root) file system directly to it. but it can still be an installer bug, i don't mean to make any claims, just trying to find a way forward (and to reproduce the bug, if it is one)20:13
tomreynCruk: so, yes, you will need to get a boot partition onto the usb stick, but to do so, you'll also need to get a partition table onto it. and that'll mean overwriting the current file system on it.20:14
Cruktomreyn: yes I dd zerod the usb stick, and then told the installer to make a ext4 partion on it and the mount point to be /. And as you said I told it to install the boot loader on the sdb device20:14
tomreyni'm not convinced that gparted can co this for you20:14
Cruktomreyn: ok what should I do then to make a boot partition on this usb stick?20:15
tomreynCruk: okay, but then it could not, since you previously chose to use sdb for /, and not to partition it, meaning it could have no other use.20:15
tomreynCruk:i'm afraid the best way forward will be to reinstall to the usb sticl. your goal will need to be to have a partition table on the usb stick next time (right now you have the file system directly on the raw storage). then have a partition for /boot and another partition for /, and then you'll be able to also install grub on this storage (it goes right in front of the partition table)20:17
tomreynCruk: actually you'll also need an ESP (efi system partition), so it'll be bootable on uefi20:18
Crukok so three partiotions over all20:18
tomreynso make this /boot (ext4, 250 MB), ESP (fat16, 5 MB), / (ext4, the rest)20:19
tomreynESP need to be flagged ESP and bootable.20:19
CrukUbuntu default installer doesn't do this. should I use gparted to format the disk and make these partitions on it?20:20
Eca_flipetteu should do a mkfs.vfat -F32 /dev/sda220:21
Eca_flipettewith the sudo password20:21
Eca_flipetteHUUUPS20:21
Eca_flipettewrong chat20:21
CrukEca_flipette: thank you for all the suggestions up there. Sorry that I couldn't follow them and that I am going to reinstall20:22
jmomtomreyn, does he need to use gparted to set the usb partition table or can the install create the partition table20:22
vyI've just been trying to install Ubuntu 18.04 Server but could not figure out how to enable full-disk encryption. Any ideas?20:22
guideXhere's a screenshot of the issue I'm having maybe has more info http://skywirenews.com/squid.jpg20:22
Crukvy: all I know is that ulike windows linux is really hard to setup using an encrypted file system20:22
tomreynCruk: if the default 18.04 desktop installer can't create a UEFI bootable usb stick (i will verify this shortly) then you can use the *alternative* server installer to do the partitioning (which can also be done using gparted or similar before you start it)  and installation.20:23
=== SimonNL_Afk is now known as SimonNL
jmomguideX, did you install it and check if it was installed?20:23
tomreynvy: use the *alternative* server installer, see the text on top of the page you downlooaded your 'live' installer from20:23
Cruktomreyn: how long till you can verify I? Should I standby?20:23
guideXjmom: I'm not entirely sure which package I'm missing actually20:23
jmomguideX, sudo apt install libgmp-dev - to install20:23
tomreynCruk: probably 15 minutes20:24
vytomreyn: Let me check...20:24
syborgCruk, do you care about your bootloader also being encrypted? It is otherwise quite easy to set up an encrypted linux install20:24
jmomguideX, find /usr/lib/ -name "libgmp*" - to see if its installed20:24
guideXwhen I do the libgmp-dev, it says it's already installed20:24
Cruktomreyn: I will wait then. Thank you for all the hard work20:24
Cruksyborg: Seriously? You can even make the bootloader encrypted????20:25
syborgtomreyn, I missed the bit of the convo before I joined (obviously) but why do you think that ubuntu couldn't create a uefi install on a thumb drive?20:25
jmomguideX, what does this give you : find /usr/lib/ -name "libgmp*"20:25
syborgCruk, yeah it is possible but I have never messed with it20:25
Cruksyborg: Please teach me how?!20:25
Edistoi'm using a tablet without a middle mouse button... Is there an easy way to bind system middle mouse as being alt + left click?20:26
syborgI think it relies on secure boot, so you have a signed mini bootloader that decrypts your encrypted grub and launches it20:26
syborgbut I have never tried, that is all I know20:26
Cruksyborg: ok, how can I do a normal encrypted setup then?20:26
Crukcause it was impossilbe the last time I tried20:26
aroonijust upgraded to 18.04 successfully ; but /root partition is pretty full; apparently there is 2.3gb in apt directory; how do i clear out old packages etc20:26
Crukabout two years ago20:26
Crukarooni: tried sudo apt clear?20:27
syborgCruk, the installer has an option to do it automatically20:27
=== user1 is now known as SemiControl
syborgis that isn't sufficient for your need, what are you trying to do?20:27
arooniCruk:  you mean clean?20:27
Crukyeap sorry20:28
Crukclean20:28
Cruk^ arooni20:28
vytomreyn: I have found the link to the alternative installer. Though wondering something... How am I supposed to know that the alternative installer provides disk encryption during installation?20:28
guideXjmom: libgmp.so, libgmp.so.10.3.2, libgmpxx.a, libgmp.a, libgmp.so.10, libgmpxx.so.4.5.2, libgmpxx.so.4, openssl-1.0.0/engines/libgmp.so, libgmp.xx.so20:28
arooniCruk: oh thats good ; is 3gb free enough for root partition20:28
tomreynsyborg: i'm not yet convinced that it cannot. it's the experience Cruk's made.20:28
Crukarooni: depends I think.20:29
Crukon what you want to do on this machine20:29
tomreynvy: by reading the text on the download page for the now default 'live' installer20:29
arooni already like the notifcaitions more20:29
syborgtomreyn, I haven't specifically tried that but I'm pretty close to certain it can20:29
aroonihow do i go about expanding grid to a 4x4 or 9x9?20:29
arooniof virtual desktops20:29
Crukarooni: then I think you better expand the partition space. unless you are like me who is only experimenting20:30
tomreynvy: don't get me wrong, i think making the 'live' server installer a default was a very bad decision at this time.20:30
jmomguideX, ok so its installed but not seeing it for some reason.20:30
vytomreyn: I still cannot see anything related with encryption in https://www.ubuntu.com/download/server Would you mind pointing me to the right page, please?20:30
tomreynvy: it does not explicitly mention encryption there, but it says: "This release uses our new installer, Subiquity. If you require advanced networking and storage features, such as RAID and LVM, please use the traditional installer found on the alternative downloads page."20:31
Eca_flipetteHum... Oh ! I've lost my bluetooth key on the keyboard... Perhaps if I unplug the card i would get my key back20:33
Eca_flipette*o*20:33
Crukis ubuntu drive encryption fault safe? like if there is a power cut? multiple unexpected system resets? Cause even highly advertised solutions like bestcrypt (they say that goverments around the world use it) has failed me and costed me before. one time the system restarted and I nver got my data back.20:34
syborgI haven't had issues, I've lost power on luks setups with no issue before20:34
syborgbut backups are *always* advisable20:35
CrukDON'T USE BESTCRYPT20:35
jmomguideX, i believe you just to create a sym link - https://stackoverflow.com/questions/6360724/installing-ghc-binaries-on-linux-cant-find-libgmp-so20:35

guideXjmom: ok cool I'll try it20:36
tomreynCruk: the folks whose vpn you are using most likely also use it on their servers.20:36
Crukhttps://www.jetico.com/data-encryption/encrypt-hard-drives-bestcrypt-volume-encryption20:36
CrukI mean Bestcrypt volume is good, really good, so much good that they even endup blocking yourself from accessing your files!!!20:36
CrukWhich is not what I need20:36
tomreynit -> dmcrypt-luks20:36
syborgthe most secure encryption is shred /dev/sda20:37
syborgencrypts all your data as unrecoverable noise =P20:37
Cruktomreyn: What do you mean? rise up you mean?20:37
Crukhow do you know they use jetico bestcrypt?20:37
tomreynCruk: right. but i guess that's OT here. i'm just saying it's trusted by many.20:38
Cruktomreyn: ?20:38
Cruktomreyn: what app you talking about? bestcrypt or luks?20:38
Crukwhich one is trusted by many?20:38
tomreynCruk: dmcrypt-luks. i have never heard of the other thing.20:38
syborgyeah, luks is pretty much the standard filesystem encryption tool on linux20:39
Crukoooh. got it. yes. Rise up is all about opensource and privacy. I was really scratching my head here when you said they are probably using jetico!!!!20:39
syborgCruk, you never answered my question earlier. What kind of encrpytion setup are you aiming for? And why isn't the live installer FDE option sufficient for your needs?20:39
tomreyn<tomreyn> it -> dmcrypt-luks20:40
Cruksyborg: it is super is is more than sufficient. I only have never been able to get it to work20:40
CrukI only endup locking my self out20:40
syborgOdd, what error are you getting?20:40
Crukdon't know how to use it20:40
syborgOr it just won't decrypt?20:40
CrukIt was about two years ago the last time I tried it. It didn't boot as far as I can remember20:41
syborgInteresting. I have never had that issue with the installer's built in approach to FDE20:41
CrukI should try it again if you say it has become this simple.20:41
Crukis FDE the same as luks syborg ?20:41
syborgyeah, it is literally just checking a box and entering a password Cruk20:42
syborgFDE is just Full Disk Encryption20:42
syborgand on ubuntu it uses LUKS20:42
CrukAwesome I am gonna try it after tomreyn's verification20:42
Cruktomreyn: Was I wong about the state of the installer?20:42
syborgso even if for some reason the installer won't use UEFI installing to a thumb drive, it can definitely install with MSDOS/BIOS20:42
Crukdid you check it?20:42
syborgis UEFI really critical?20:42
Cruksyborg: I only want my usb stick to be global to be bootable from anywhere, that is why I want uefi20:43
syborgIf so, and ubuntu's installer for some reason defaults to BIOS mode, you could manually set it up and it should be fine, but more work20:43
syborgCruk, I would go with BIOS in that case20:43
syborgUEFI machines can boot in BIOS mode20:43
Cruksyborg: you mean lucks doesn't work with uefi?20:44
syborgnope, luks doesn't caree20:44
syborg*care20:44
Crukso why are you suggesting to only go with bios?20:44
syborgI mean that for a universally bootable USB stick, MSDOS/BIOS is a good choice20:44
Cruksome recent systems don't recognize bios at all20:44
Cruklike a new laptop that I saw a few days ago20:44
syborghmm, I have never had that issue but I suppose it could happen20:44
CrukONLY uefi20:45
syborgwas compatability mode disabled in the BIOS?20:45
syborg*UEFI settings20:45
=== lng is now known as Guest64921
syborgwell regardless, I am sure you can make a UEFI install work20:45
Cruksyborg: the thing was expensive like 8k$ or something and no matter where I looked for there was no fall back to bios option anywhere in the bios. A friend asked me to install windows on it for him20:46
syborgI would format the USB stick with a GPT partition table and create a EFI partition20:46
syborgthat might cause the installer to use UEFI if for some reason it is defaulting to BIOS20:46
=== root_ is now known as Guest22631
Edistoanyone know how to set alt + left click = to middle mouse?20:46
tomreynCruk: this will roughly have been what you were presented during installation. http://i.imgur.com/bJxYwwJ.png (you probably had soem partitions on sda though). what you would have needed to do is to create a "new partition table" on /dev/sdb and then create the partitions i discussed above (esp, /boot, /) and, on the bottom of the screen, choose to install the boot loader to sdb (default was sda there).20:47
syborgand make sure the live installer is booted in UEFI mode20:47
Two_DogsEdisto: your system-settings > mouse config panel offer options for alternate keys?20:49
Cruktomreyn: excelent this is exactly what I was presented with.20:49
Crukand I only created a single ext4 partition20:49
Crukmy mistake so sorry20:49
syborghehe, well that would force BIOS mode Cruk20:50
Cruksyborg: what would force bios mode?20:50
EdistoTwo_Dogs: no... do I have to install something for that feature? mouse and touchpad just have primary button and mouse speed options20:50
syborginstalling to a single ext4 partition Cruk20:50
syborgif there is no ESP partition it has to use the MBR20:51
syborgtherefore BIOS mode20:51
Crukon my system yes. But is still is bootable only on one machine and the usb is not global. Maybe I should have tried booting from bios.20:51
syborg?20:51
Crukmaybe mybios settings is not right20:51
syborgI think tomreyn is pointing you in the right direction Cruk20:52
Two_DogsEdisto: does the installer show some app to expand mouse configuration?20:52
tomreynCruk: so this is roughly what you'd needed to do, i think (haven't finished the installation, yet): http://i.imgur.com/yy0TNf1.png (ignore the the 2x 1mb free space there, that's just a leftover)20:53
EdistoTwo_Dogs: mouse & touchpad does not. i'm using 18.04 is there another mouse config option somewhere?20:53
sla3kHi, can anybody please have a look at: https://pastebin.com/M1aFMqk1 we are running out of space on / which is an LV, but then I have .Private which is encrypted. My understanding is that I can add more disk space to "/dev/mapper/matrix--vg-root" and "/home/kazan/.Private" will reflect the new, increased size automatically. Two_Dogssla3k: home is a separate partition?20:57
Cruksyborg: it is 53 mb and not esp?!20:57
tomreynCruk: i needed to grow it to 55, and it's esp, yes20:58
syborgit is esp Cruk :-)20:58
Crukok ok thank you20:58

tomreynapparently there's some minimum size limit for esp "on my architecture", i wasn't aware of this.20:58
sla3kTwo_Dogs: good question, let me have a look at fdisk -l20:58
syborgefi is the same thing. ESP is a feature of EFI systems so it is pretty common to exchange the terms20:58
tomreynCruk: this stuff is complicated, i don't blame anyone not getting it right.20:59
syborgand the fact that it is a FAT filesystem is implied by the fact that it is recognized as an efi partition20:59

t3kg33kGreetings all. Thought I would try here first before Handbrake IRC. Anyone have any experience converting .mov files recording from a Nikon DSLR with Handbrake? I have tried but the audio is not converting.21:05
Cruksyborg: and AMD or ARm are not evil?21:05
Crukthey are exploitable too21:05
Two_Dogssla3k: i would think so, yes, but i would not want to own that opinion, i dont lvm, i would be doing the manual first21:06
CrukEriC^^: how you been?21:06
EriC^^Cruk: great thanks21:06
Two_Dogssla3k: this is a good time to move home to a separate partition also :)21:06
syborgAMD is less the devil Cruk21:06
syborgARM I don't know enough about t osay21:06

Cruksometimes you see and old nick and a lot of things happen in your brain in a split second. I don't know if people know what I mean!21:06
syborgAMD is less blatantly backdoored than intel21:07
CrukEriC^^: Glad to hear it!21:07
syborgand have a lesser degree of vulnerability to the recent exploits you mentioned21:07
sla3kTwo_Dogs: I know, this server is critical so I was hoping to not bring the services down. But I will surely try it on a separate piece of hardware with identical configuration to see if this would work, or not21:07
tomreyncan we move the cpu discussion to #ubuntu-offtopic?21:08

Two_Dogsxplain that one21:11
syborgwell the EFI chat was related to setting up ubuntu21:11
syborgthe CPU chat was neither here nor there21:11
syborgTwo_Dogs, but you could always ask for help with your CPU and then we can talk about them again ;)21:14

fcastilloHi everybody. I'm having trouble starting `synaptic-pkexec`. It's just stuck, no error message/warning. I've run it from the terminal and don't get anything. I feel that I'm might be missing some package or something. I have no trouble starting it by running `sudo synaptic`21:22
fcastilloforgot to mention I'm using Ubuntu 18.0421:23
t3kg33kI'm using Ubuntu Mate and just found out their Handbrake install is broken. I had to remove it and install the version from the official ppa. It's working now21:23
Wafficus91hello, I have a question about moving a file to my rules.d folder. My laptop running Lubuntu is not letting me move a rules file into the etc/udev/rules.d folder even though I'm the administrator. How do I get around this?21:25

Two_Dogsdoug16k: look at the man on the gist i shared with you, it says gksu is su, while gksudo is sudo, there is an inherent diff between the two21:46
doug16kTwo_Dogs, from that man page: "Also notice that the library will decide if it should use su or  sudo as  backend using the /apps/gksu/sudo-mode gconf key, if you call the gksu command."21:46
Wafficus91hey weird question but any commands I do in the LXTerminal are "Bash" commands?21:46

naccso please stop arguing about this. you may not like it, but apport is considered key ubuntu functionality22:17
Two_Dogsvy: an upgrade can take a while especially on a low bandwidth connection22:18

NinjaKirbyHey guys, this is a longshot but the most recent Ubuntu v16.04.4 updates has disturbed the multi-monitor setup of my brothers PC. 2 Monitors, VGA+HDMI, when the mouse moves across onto the HDMI screen it can't move back to the VGA display. Is this a "new thing"?22:29
vyTwo_Dogs: http://termbin.com/ci8v22:29
naccNinjaKirby: is the HDMI screen larger than the VGA? did you make sure you were trying to transition along the actual shared edge?22:30
vyTwo_Dogs: I will tell you something that might annoy you... I think the problem is solved... I am not hearing any more sounds from the disk and "vim /etc/default/keyboard" which used to take >10s to open now appears in a blink.22:31
vyTwo_Dogs: Could it be related with the fact that I have just installed the system and LVM was performing some initial background job?22:31
Two_Dogsvy: why would i get annoyed? solved/fixed is good22:32
naccvy: were you doing full disk encryption?22:32
naccvy: or LUKS over RAID, or something22:32
vynacc: full disk encryption22:32
NinjaKirbynacc: The HDMI does have a higher resolution output. I'm unfortunately about 7000 miles away from the affected PC, but my brother is familiar with the 'multi-desktop way', he will be pushing against the edges to try and move between.22:32
naccNinjaKirby: ok, I noticed that changed in 18.04 for me (it used to be your mouse could end up in the 'undrawn' space that was not visible in the smaller monitor, but that doens't seem to happen anymore22:33
Two_Dogsvy: from the look of pstree the heavy load all looked related to update-initramf,5515 /usr/sbin/update-initramfs -c -t -k 4.15.0-22-generic ... if i had to guess22:34
naccvy: ok22:34
vyTwo_Dogs: Anyway... I am glad my disk started to perform faster than my typing. Thanks so much for your kind help.22:35
Two_Dogsvy: does the full crypto disk usually cause that big a drag on system performance?22:36
Two_Dogsi dont crypto disk, but btrfs sort of acted sluggish that way22:37
Two_Dogsespecially on system upgrades22:37
vyTwo_Dogs: This is the first time I am using full disk encryption as well, so have no clue. (I quit using ecryptfs on my dev laptop due to non-sense filename length limitations.)22:38
m27Question: when I log into a remote server, is a there a way to identify myself as a superuser, without typing in the password?22:40
m27(I always have to lookup the password of the user account in my password manager)22:40
rootd00dah. so confusing. syslog seems to be writing to a rotated auth.log.1 instead of auth.log22:41
Two_Dogsm27: you could used shared keys method rather than pass22:41
rootd00danyone ever experience that? i'm seeing a lot of similar things online, but... this seems crazy.22:41
rootd00dwe have fail2ban monitoring /var/log/auth.log, but once it gets rotated, syslog isn't writing to auth.log anymore.22:42
rootd00dit's writing to auth.log.1....22:42
NinjaKirbynaac: Thanks for your support, I'll battle with it tomorrow when I have more time, good night.22:44
m27Two_Dogs, i already use keys to login the box. But when i type "sudo", i need the password.22:45
naccm27: you definitely want to require a pssword for sudo22:45
naccm27: i'm not sure what you're suggesting, but mkaing sudo passwordless on a system that's accessible over the network is a 'bad idea' (TM)22:46

vyWith full disk encryption, now I have another problem... There is no keyboard/monitor placed close to my home server rack. How will I pass the decryption prompt at startup when I power it on in the rack?22:46
m27nacc, you see it as a secondline of defense22:47
m27you'd need the key, and the password to really break into the system22:47
m27thanks for the feedback22:47

optonoxI think something got borked with my upgrade to 18.04 and nVidia and now I can not get to my desktop. Does anyone have any experience with this?23:24
optonoxI formatted a SO question here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1040434/no-desktop-after-upgrade-to-18-04-cannot-remove-plymouth-only-see-blocks-mes23:24

Two_Dogsoptonox: can you get to a tty? ctrl-alt-f2 work?23:25
optonoxTwo_Dogs: I can get to a root command prompt by going to recovery mode23:27
optonoxTwo_Dogs: I have not tried ctrl-alt-f2 from that blocks screen.23:28
Two_Dogsoptonox: if you think nvidia is the issue, you could purge nvidia from recovery, know how to?23:28
Helpnnededexcellent tool ty oerheks23:29
optonoxTwo_Dogs: I tried `apt purge nvidia` from the root command prompt and it just gets stuck at 33% or something.  It can remove "plymouth"23:29
Two_Dogsoptonox: try this one> sudo aptitude purge ~nnvidia23:30
Two_Dogsoptonox: exactly as shown23:30
Optonox2Two_Dogs: From this blocks screen it doesn't look like I can open a terminal23:33
Two_Dogsoptonox: and assuming plymouth runs as service> systemctl disable plymouth* ## you dont have crypto drive/partitions do you? should work from recovery23:33
Optonox2I am trying Ctrl-alt-shift-t23:33
Two_Dogsoptonox: no, ctrl-alt-f223:34
Optonox2Two_Dogs: that doesn't work either23:34
Two_DogsOptonox2: from recovery do you get a tty?23:34
Optonox2Two_Dogs:  I do have a Windows partition but am now going to try your command from recovery23:35
Optonox2Two_Dogs:  Yes I can get to a "root she'll prompt"23:35
Two_DogsOptonox2: ok, you rebooted just now?23:35
Optonox2Two_Dogs:  Yea23:36
Two_DogsOptonox2: try: aptitude purge ~nnvidia23:36
Optonox2Two_Dogs:  I get "aptitude: command not found"23:36
Two_Dogsok23:37
Optonox2Maybe just apt?23:37
Two_DogsOptonox2: try: apt purge nvidia*23:37
Two_Dogsi am not all that clued into 'apt'23:38
Optonox2Two_Dogs:  First thing it says is : dpkg was interrupted....etc etc so I have to reconfigure this23:39
Optonox2Idk what this step does23:39
Two_DogsOptonox2: ok, you must have killed dpkg midstream prior to this23:39
Optonox2Two_Dogs:  Anyway, every time I try this purge step it just gets stuck At : Removing Plymouth. Update-in23:40
Optonox2Initramfs: deferring update23:40
Optonox2(Trigger activated)23:41
Optonox2And then nothing happens23:41
Two_DogsOptonox2: the error msg includes instructions for dpkg reconfigure?23:42
Optonox2There must be someway to either forcibly remove Plymouth or to reinstall Gdm or somethings23:42
Two_DogsOptonox2: what shows if you: systemctl disable plymouth*23:43
Optonox2Two_Dogs:  Oh wait a sec. The progress meter just moved from 1%-81%. Maybe I just need to wait it our23:43
Two_DogsOptonox2: progress for what execute?23:44
Optonox2Two_Dogs:  the purge nvidia command.   It just completed. If this wor23:45
Optonox2so what should I reinstall now?23:45
Two_Dogspurge completed error free?23:45
Two_DogsOptonox2: ^^23:45
Optonox2Yes, it looks like there are. Few warnings but no errors23:46
Two_DogsOptonox2: dont re-install a thing, reboot23:46
Optonox2So what should I reinstall now?23:46
Two_DogsOptonox2: dont re-install a thing, reboot23:46
Optonox2Ok23:46
Two_DogsOptonox2: you should default to nouveau/intel23:46
Optonox2BAM23:47
Two_Dogsbam good?23:47
Optonox2Got my mutha f*^*ng desktop back23:47
Two_Dogscool :)23:47
bobdobbsTwo_Dogs: what is nouveau? Is it the ubuntu community created drivers for nvidia?23:48
Two_Dogsbobdobbs: nouveau is the opensource driver for nvidia-chip/card23:48
bobdobbsthank23:49
optonox3Two_Dogs: Thanks for the help.  Sorry I had to type on my iPad so it was slow23:49
Two_Dogsbobdobbs: :)23:49
bobdobbsI'm wondering if uninstalling the nvidia driver and installling nouveau might help me with my issue: constantly freezing video display23:49
Two_DogsOptonox2: its all good, i ipad into linux myself23:50
Two_Dogsbobdobbs: purging nvidia should default back to intel/nouveau23:50
optonox3Two_Dogs: This has always confused me.  I do graphics work so I *need* the nvidia drivers, but IDK how I even see my desktop if I just uninstalled them all23:50
Two_DogsOptonox2: install 'inxi' now then run 'inxi -Gxx'23:51
optonox3What is that?23:51
Two_DogsOptonox2: you uninstalled the nvidia official non free driver, linux does not depend on the 'nvidia driver'23:52
IonTauhey everyone23:52
Two_DogsOptonox2: inxi is the swiss-knife of linux sysinfo23:52
optonox3Two_Dogs: Okay I am installing now23:53
IonTauare people having any issues with 18.04 and high CPU use with xorg?23:53
IonTauI've been able to run an earlier kernel from 16.04 and things are behaving fine.23:54
Two_DogsOptonox2: once ran> inxi -Gxx ## look at Driver: <-- see what?23:54
optonox3Two_Dogs: Graphics:  Card: NVIDIA GK107GLM [Quadro K2000M] bus-ID: 01:00.0 chip-ID: 10de:0ffb            Display Server: X.Org 1.19.6 drivers: nvidia (unloaded: modesetting)            Resolution: 1920x1080@59.96hz, 1920x1080@59.96hz            OpenGL: renderer: NVE7 version: 4.3 Mesa 18.0.0-rc5 (compat-v: 3.0) Direct Render: Yes23:56
optonox3I get a lot of cool output from that23:56
Two_Dogsoptonox3: i did not expect to see nvidia as driver23:56
lapagaIonTau, on mine it is using between 0% and 2% with chrome and irc open23:56
optonox3Two_Dogs: Yeah it is strange.  I think I might now try to reinstall the nvidia binary driver23:57
Two_Dogsoptonox3 this is my dump of inxi -Gxx, https://git.io/vhqvl23:57
Two_Dogsoptonox3: according to inxi nvidia is active now23:58
optonox3Two_Dogs: How did you get wayland? I want that too23:58
optonox3Two_Dogs: Do you have an nvidia graphics card?23:58
Two_Dogsoptonox3: wayland is an option on plasma23:58
bobdobbsTwo_Dogs: The command 'apt purge nvidia-*' returns successfully. If I reboot now should I expect a working video display?23:59
bobdobbs(all things being equal, of course. I know you can't anticipate every possible roadbump)23:59
Sander_homeHow come the extra keys on the Ubuntu touch phone keyboard is jumping up and down?23:59
