Philcotomreyn, there is nothing at all connected09:14
tomreynPhilco: hmm this must be some electrical / electronic issue, i think. you could try to see whether you can enter the bios. you'd usually need to press enter or escape followed by one of delete, f2 or alt-f2 during the first screen the computer will draw when you power it on.09:17
Philcothanks, tomreyn - i will try09:18
tomreynPhilco: if you can access bios this way you will have proven that your keyboard still works. if so, you could boot from a different system, such as a usb drive with the ubuntu installer on it, adn see whether the keyboard also workls there.09:19
tomreynPhilco: alternatively, my final suggestion would be to unpluc power off the laptop., and remove the battery also (should be possible on a lenovo), then press the power button for 5 seconds, then connect only the power cord but not the battery (if possible) and see whether it powers or and whether you can use the keyboard.09:20

REAMDEty lemme try09:26
Philcotomreyn, no luck with the battery removal but i did boot the laptop from an installation usb and got the installation desktop - however the arrow keys aren't working there either09:27
tomreynsonu_nk: right, we're running in circles. let me look for an alternative approach.09:28
tomreynPhilco: this is a hardware issue, i'm afraid. if you're lucky you just tossed the laptop somewhere recently and all that happened is that the keyboard connector (to the mainboarD) got loose, then it's an easy fix (for someone into that). either way you'll probbaly need to seek support from a repair shop at this point.09:29
Philcothank you tomreyn - that is very helpful ... i will find a repair shop. you have been great - much appreciated :)09:30
sonu_nktomreyn, should i reinstall it ubuntu ?09:30
tomreynsonu_nk: it could surely fix it, but it's also a somewhat drastic measure. if you don't expect data loss it may be easier, though.09:32

tomreynsonu_nk: i suspect /var/lib/dpkg/info/phpmyadmin.postrm is a shell script. if so, you can insert a new line after the first line, saying: set -x09:35
tomreynthis should provide more output when you run "sudo dpkg --purge phyhmadmin" again09:35

vtntimoHello12:26
Matti__Hello there12:27
vtntimoPopping in for a quick question regarding Google accounts and Ubuntu 18.04. I have added two Google accounts from the Settings > Online Accounts -view and selected to only sync my Calendar. What I am trying to do is to get my Google Calendar events showing up in the top task tray's calendar. For some reason, they're not showing and thus I have two questions: a) Is there a command I can run to sync the events, or does it always require a re-log / reboot to12:29
vtntimofetch the newest ones? This behaviour would be a bit dull tbh. b) If not fixed via relog/reboot, do I have to install another application to get the calendar events showing? I really don't need nor want a separate Calendar software, just want my events showing up in the task tray calendar.12:29

=== charles is now known as Guest28655
CarlFKyou can install/run linux on most anything built in the last 15 years.  32 bit CPU or better, 4meg of ram or something13:17
CarlFKthe tricky part of what you mention is "dualboot"13:17
system16y ?13:17
system16i think im a bit low on storage.13:17
|sergedx|system16: do you have free (unpartitioned) space on your disk? if not, you need to make it first, by using special utilites like partition magic13:18
CarlFKthat means you need to get a bootloader installed that will boot both linux and windows, which may not boot if it isn't signed/secured or something, which may make it difficult.  (for me anyway)13:18
system16yes i have . but its only 8 MB13:19
CarlFK88.7 GiB Free - plenty, but currently allocated to Windows.13:19
system16so i should shrink one of my drives ?13:20
CarlFKyes13:20
system16bootloader ? i need to install a bootloader ?13:20
CarlFKthe ubuntu installer will both shrink your current drives and install the bootloader and give you the option of booting windows too13:21
system16oh so its ez13:22
system16it wont harm my data right ?13:22
CarlFKit will if you tell it to.  which is unlikely, but I did it once.13:22
system16so there is a option called dualboot in ubuntu installer ?13:23
CarlFKI got confused between which drive I wanted to keep and which I wanted to wipe and install the OS on.  whoops.13:23
dombnexenhello i need some help to find some workin android emu for ubuntu/ubuntu mate13:23
|sergedx|you better have a backup for all your data before shrinking. And if you already have such backup, another option is to reinstall windows first, with full repartition13:23
system16oh my problem is that ubuntu doesnt say the drive names  it just says /dev/sda13:24
system16or /dev/sda113:24
CarlFKsystem16: you will see a message like "installer has detected another OS on your disk.  would you like the option to boot it?"13:24
system16and i should press yes ?13:24

system16hi. i just watched a utube video about dual booting win 10 and ubuntu. its a simple process btw. that guy said i need to turn off fast startup. and i dont want to do this because it takes only 29 sec for me to log into windows and thats awesome. what should i do ?18:53
SporkWitchsystem16: fast startup works by NOT shutting down the computer, but doing a suspend to disk.  As a result, booting into another OS can corrupt things.18:53
system16is there a way around ?18:54
SporkWitchsystem16: disabling fast startup, so that shutting down windows actually shuts it down18:54
transhumanSporkWitch, ah thanks they're called snaps, I forgot, not used to this new Ubuntu subsystem18:54
system16so this is my only option ?18:54
SporkWitchsystem16: if you keep all the linux stuff _completely_ segregated, you might be okay, but again, it's not recommended.18:55
system16what about this. forget dualbooting. what about installing ubuntu on a usb drive ?18:55
syb0rgsystem16, one thing you could do is install your linux bootloader to a thumb drive, and then only plug that into your pc when booting to linux18:55
SporkWitchsystem16: assuming the windows directory is on an SSD, even with fast startup disabled, boot times should be sufficiently low as not to be too much of a bother18:56

syb0rgas far as I know, the main issue Windows has is that it messes with grub/the efi partition or MBR, right?18:56
SporkWitchsystem16: that's also perfectly viable, if you've got a big enough one to be useful18:56
system16^^thats y i need fastboot :)18:56
system16how can i do that ?18:56
syb0rghow do you install your bootloader to a thumb drive system16?18:56
SporkWitchsyb0rg: it'll mess with the MBR sometimes, definitely; i've heard of it messing with non-windows stuff on the EFI partition (which it _shouldn't_ do, but this is MSFT we're talking about)18:56
system16idk syb0rg18:57
syb0rgno I was verifying that was your question system1618:57
system16guys, i know NOTHING about linux. thats y i want to install it,\.18:57
syb0rgdoing so isn't hard. I would just create a fat32 partition for your esp and make the remaining space an ext2 partition for /boot18:57
SporkWitchsyb0rg: no, he's talking about "fast startup" which is a windows8 and later thing.  It works by a combination of moving some of the boot processes to AFTER user login (so it _seems_ to start up faster, since you get the login screen sooner), and also by NOT doing a real shut down when you hit shutdown, but instead suspending to disk18:58
system16plz speak English18:58
system16whats esp18:58
SporkWitchsystem16: don't tell people to speak English and then use text speak like "plz" and "y"18:58
syb0rgI know SporkWitch, I was mentioning a way to hopefully avoid issues18:58
syb0rgI'm not sure if he is interested in trying that since he commuinicates poorly18:59
oerhekseven with ubuntu on usb, you would need to disable fastboot18:59
SporkWitchsyb0rg: looks like he's fine just making a persistent USB; that'd be the easiest and safest solution if he's insistent on not disabling fastboot18:59
system16so there is no way around ?18:59
oerheksno19:00
trammellperhaps explore having a separate partition for data that would be commonly accessed by both linux and windows19:00
SporkWitchoerheks: as long as none of the windows partitions get mounted it should be fine, no?19:00
SporkWitchoerheks: the concern, after all, is corrupting the data for resuming from the suspend-to-disk windows does19:00
syb0rgyeah, it should as far as I know. Windows messes with the state of the EFI partition when using fast boot, right? So if you have a different efi partition on a separate disk for ubuntu it should not be an issue19:00

zetheroowhat controls the DNS in web browsers in Ubuntu?19:05
syb0rgthat much I can verify system16. I was also trying to explain that you could install ubuntu to your computer, but have your boot partition and an efi partition on a usb drive19:06
syb0rgthat would require a bit more effort, however.19:06
ioriasystem16, you might  have some issues on a given hw, but yes19:06
zetheroowhen I am connected to my company's VPN (openvopn)  I can ping 'hostname' in the terminal and it will resolve to 'hostname.local', but in the browsers this doesn't happen - the web browsers fail to resolve the hostnames19:06
SporkWitchoerheks: i'm not seeing anything in the linked article that even mentions fast startup or concerns with it for dual-boots.  The askubuntu link referenced in the article also only raises the suspend-to-disk concerns i mentions, without any information beyond "make sure you always shut it down for real"19:07
system16syb0rg, umm thats too complicated for me. (because im not sure what is efi. )19:07
SporkWitch!resolv.conf | zetheroo19:08
ubottuzetheroo: resolvconf is a set of scripts that's used to manage /etc/resolv.conf in 12.04 and later, for more information please see: http://www.stgraber.org/2012/02/24/dns-in-ubuntu-12-04/ and https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/serverguide/network-configuration.html#name-resolution19:08
syb0rgsystem16, do you know what partitions are?19:08
system16yes19:08
system16like c d e f etc.19:08
syb0rgyeah system16, in windows anyway19:09
SporkWitchsystem16: UEFI replaced BIOS. Rather than an MBR at the start of the drive, it uses a dedicated EFI partition to store things like bootloaders and associated software19:09
syb0rgso the approach I am describing works this way: You create an ext4 partition on your hard drive, and one fat32 partition of 600Mb and an ext2 partition of like a gig or two on the thumb drive.19:09
system16this pc uses bios since it clearly says bios setup19:09
syb0rgok, sure19:09
zetherooSporkWitch: in my resolv.conf all I have as nameserver is: nameserver 127.0.0.5319:09
SporkWitchsystem16: windows and linux can share the same EFI system partition "without issue" (as mentioned previously, windows is kind of a bad roommate, and sometimes it overwrites things that aren't windows to mess with you)19:09
system16well looks like the easiest way is to dualboot .19:10
syb0rgThen you don't need to create the fat32 partition19:10
zetherooSporkWitch: and apparently one should not edit the resolv.conf file anymore ... :/19:10
zutathello. how can i customize the gnome applications "menu". it's currently not displaying all applications and truncating longer names19:11
SporkWitchsystem16: as long as you don't mount the windows partitions, you shouldn't need to worry about fast startup19:11
syb0rgthen in the installer you would tell ubuntu to use manual partitioning. Tell it to install the bootloader to your thumb drive, and mount the ext2 partition as /boot and the ext4 partition as /19:11
SporkWitchsystem16: that said, it _is_ recommended, so don't come crying if windows whinges the next time you boot it19:11
ioriasystem16, usually it automount the win partition19:11
ioria*s19:11
oerheksedit /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/base >>> https://askubuntu.com/questions/157154/how-do-i-include-lines-in-resolv-conf-that-wont-get-lost-on-reboot/15719219:11
SporkWitchioria: ubuntu automounts NTFS partitions r/w? O.o19:11
SporkWitchioria: kubuntu doesn't...19:12
syb0rgthose are the only extra steps, and it allows you to have a separate bootloader for linux that you remove when not in linux, so that windows cannot mess with it19:12
ioriaSporkWitch, yep, under /media19:12
syb0rgand you still install to your hard drive19:12
SporkWitchit'll _let_ you if you click the partition in your file manager, but it doesn't mount it by default...19:12
ioriaSporkWitch, right19:12
system16ok then. i will disable fastboot since there is no other option. (btw can i uninstall ubuntu if i disliked it in the future ?)19:13
syb0rgand you still want to disable windows fast startup like oerheks was saying, otherwise you might have issues when trying to mess with windows files from in linux19:13
syb0rgat least that is the reason I am seeing19:13
syb0rgof course you can remove ubuntu system1619:13
SporkWitchsyb0rg: yeah, the concern is messing with the state, since it does a suspend to disk.  If you mount read-only, it should be fine (or don't mount at all)19:13
system16syb0rg, i mean will it mess with my windows files after i uninstall it ?19:14
SporkWitchsystem16: no19:14
SporkWitchsystem16: separate partitions19:14

SporkWitchsystem16: if that's all you want, then a VM is ideal19:41
system16yeah. do u know how can i make it run faster ?19:42
tomreynsystem16: you won't really get to know it until you run it as your main system, though. still, running in a VM can be a good start if you'll actually remind yourself to use it.19:42
SporkWitchthrow more resources at it; make sure to install guest additions19:42
system16my core i7 is dual core is it because of this ?19:43
Edistoif I am constantly experiencing random crashes on ubuntu, would switching flavors possibly make a difference?19:43
SporkWitchthey make i7's that are only two cores? O.o19:43
system16+2 virtual cores19:44
SporkWitchEdisto: depends what is causing the crashes19:44
EdistoSporkWitch: That I am not sure. It is so random. Sometimes it is twice a day. Sometimes it's 5 times a day. Every app. Like a reverb static freeze19:44
syb0rgsystem16, also try a different DE than default ubuntu19:45
system16mint ?19:45
syb0rgno... that is a different distro.19:45
syb0rgtry a "flavor" of ubuntu, xubuntu is really snappy19:45
system16*noted19:46
syb0rgand kubuntu is probably somewhere in between and prettier19:46
zetherooSporkWitch: still really not working - I can resolve the hostnames in the terminal, but the browsers are not working19:46
=== xubuntu is now known as Guest12600
system16which one is prettier ? xubuntu or the default de ?19:46
syb0rgsystem16, I think default is prettier but still prefer xubuntu19:46
syb0rgand I think kubuntu is prettier than default19:47
system16how can i get this xubuntu ? app store ?19:47
Edistosystem16: I am thinking of trying xubuntu or ubuntu mate19:47
syb0rgnah you download the xubuntu iso19:47
ioriasystem16,  lscpu | grep 'Model name'19:48
system16oh . from ubuntu.com ?19:48
syb0rghttps://xubuntu.org/download19:48
system16what does that do ioria ?19:48
ioriasystem16,  your cpu19:48
humm8syb0rg: are there any DE's which work just as well under mac as under Linux?19:48
syb0rgno clue humm819:49
syb0rgprobably not is my guess19:49
humm8:)19:49
system16ioria, :-bash: lscpu: command not found19:50
SporkWitchhumm8: #apple (also, apple doesn't like you doing things your own way, so almost certainly no)19:50
ioriasystem16,  weird19:50
system16i ran that command in cygwin btw19:50
ioriasystem16,  lol19:50
system16its a terminal emulator19:51
ioriait's a linux emulator19:51
SporkWitchwe know what cygwin is; much like WSL, it doesn't work how you think it works lol19:51
system16i only use it to ssh into my file serevr.19:52
system16server*19:52
system16ii should download this ? xubuntu-18.04-desktop-i386.iso19:52
SporkWitchif it's 32bit19:52
system16or the one that has amd64 ?19:52
syb0rgprobably AMD64, but as SporkWitch said that depends on your machine19:53
SporkWitchx86 == 32bit, AMD64/x86_64 == 64bit19:53
system16xubuntu-18.04-desktop-amd64.iso19:53
syb0rgif you have a 64 bit machine you want that one system1619:54
syb0rgif you don't know what kind you have, check first19:54
system16btw that index thing wasnt noob friendly :)19:54
syb0rghow much RAM does this machine have19:54
system16i want to run it in a vm19:54
system16i have cbox on my laptop19:54
system16vbox*19:55
* SporkWitch offers syb0rg a pair of pliars to help pull those teeth19:55
syb0rgsystem16, if you have a 32 bit machine it cannot run a 64 bit vm19:55
syb0rgso it still matters19:55
system16its a 64 bit machine19:56
system16lol19:56
syb0rgthen get the 64 bit image19:56
syb0rghey the pliars worked SporkWitch!19:56
system16downloading19:56
SporkWitchsyb0rg: :)19:56
SporkWitchsyb0rg: i offered a thumbscrews to a customer once, after restarting their network hardware fixed the issue and her netadmin was _still_ insisting i had to have done something, because it wasn't an issue on their side lol19:57
SporkWitchs/a//19:57
syb0rglol19:57
SporkWitchsyb0rg: you don't understand, we were troubleshooting for about 3 or 4 hours, and because we don't run their network, i have to qualify the recommendation to reboot stuff with "you can try this, but I'm not saying you should; if things weren't properly saved, it may revert to an old configuration that can break things"19:58
system16btw is there a book or something about how to get started in linux ? (i have worked on linux before so i know a bit about it)19:59
SporkWitchsyb0rg: i'm not sure that netadmin is employed there any more after all that lol19:59
syb0rgsounds painful SporkWitch19:59
syb0rgsystem16, there are lots of books. You can also just poke around and read wikis/tutorials when you get stuck19:59
SporkWitchsystem16: http://www.admin.com/19:59
syb0rgand pester IRC channels of course =D19:59
oerheksdo not touch man pages20:00
SporkWitchsystem16: recommended reading before going the "pester IRC" route: http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html20:00
system16thanks20:00
oerheksread any blog, skip the official ones20:00
system16lol20:01
syb0rgor do touch man pages, but only to do a search for a specific thing20:01
syb0rgI think the next release of man will display an ascii representation of the gates of hell inscribed with "abandon all hope, ye who enter here" at the top of all documents20:02
SporkWitchi will never understand the hatred of manpages; while some are less than amazing, in general, they're extremely helpful and follow a nice standard layout for ease of understanding20:03
syb0rgthey are dense material that isn't easy to read or conducive to quick answers20:03
syb0rgI will admit they are very useful at times and I am glad they exist20:04
syb0rgbut I will still try google before man 99 times out of 10020:04
SporkWitchsyb0rg: "what is this command?" manpage will tell you.  "what does this do?" manpage will tell you.  "can i do x with y?" manpage will _probably_ tell you, though it helps to know that it takes vi commands, e.g. / to search20:05
trxmod21tes20:05
SporkWitchsyb0rg: i always go to the manpage first; search results mean sifting through cruft and dead-ends20:06
system16wow u guys know so much about linux.can u hack ppl ?20:06
syb0rgI suppose you have a point SporkWitch.20:06
syb0rgYes system16 but that is an analog process involving an axe20:07
SporkWitchsystem16: with the proper paperwork to cover my ass20:07
system16oh20:07
system16hackers worst nightmare : that tiny switch located on the back of ur pc20:07
syb0rgSporkWitch, for simple questions though I usually get several answers just from the sample text of various search results20:08
SporkWitchsystem16: that said, if you're interested in the security side, check out https://overthewire.org/wargames/ Their Bandit line is _very_ beginner, and is actually pretty useful just for learning bash itself, the security aspects are a bonus20:08
system16ok20:08
SporkWitchsyb0rg: it does depend, and often those answers are _from_ the manpage.  And while you're right, they _can_ be dense, the best way to get used to and learn _how_ to read them is to, you guessed it, read them20:08
syb0rgbut RTFMing is work ;)20:09
SporkWitchsyb0rg: see the "smart questions" link i gave earlier :)20:09
syb0rgI wasn't asking a question you spork20:09
SporkWitchsyb0rg: it's a really good read, and offers a lot of good information on how to help yourself, as well as form better questions that are more likely to get useful, relevant answers20:10
syb0rgalso I have seen that floating around before20:10
syb0rgthough you are the first person I have seen share it in the last few years20:10
SporkWitchsyb0rg: if we could make more people read and follow it, we just might get September to finally end20:10
syb0rglol20:10
TheSilentLinkI'm in the gnome file manager but how do I see the full path and edit it? sorry for the stupid question20:15
SporkWitchTheSilentLink: i think you either left click or ctrl-click the area with the breadcrumbs?20:15
kk4ewtand look at the gnome-tweak-tool to add that extension or setting20:16
striveTheSilentLink: Try: ctrl+l20:17
TheSilentLinkThank you! ctrl +l works20:17
striveTheSilentLink: You could probably make it a habit in any type of file manager.20:18
striveTheSilentLink: I believe that shortcut works with web browsers as well.20:19
TheSilentLinkyea use to use dolphin (kde manager) and there you just double click the top bar but that doesn't work here20:19
syb0rgit sure does strive, that is a really useful shortcut. Thanks for sharing20:19
strivesyb0rg: Happy to help. :)20:20
SporkWitchTheSilentLink: get ready for misery; gnome / GTK is _not_ fun after the sanity and control that is KDE lol20:21
* SporkWitch grumbles at mozilla team to go back to the old filepicker instead of the horrifically bad GTK one...20:21
syb0rgSporkWitch, I booted to ubuntu 18.04 vanilla to see how their variant of GNOME was, and it froze within two minutes of use20:22
syb0rgon powerful, well supported hardware20:22
SporkWitchsyb0rg: gotta love gnome lol20:22
syb0rgmaybe I'll try again in the mid 2020s lol20:23
vfwsyb0rg: Updates?20:27
TheSilentLinkSporkWitch: well at least for me kde was very buggy on my nvidia card so moved to budgie20:28
syb0rgvfw, pardon me?20:29
vfwsyb0rg: Did you do updates?20:29
syb0rgon the live ubuntu? No.20:30
syb0rgBut 18.04 just came out20:30
vfwsyb0rg: Oh, so you did not install?20:30
syb0rgnah I just wanted to check it out20:30
syb0rgI'm happy with plasma20:30
vfwoh, ok20:30
vfwcool20:30
TheSilentLinksyb0rg: what card you got?20:31
syb0rgGTX 97020:31
TheSilentLinkoh with the propitiatory drivers?20:31
syb0rgnah, live boots with nouveau right?20:31
SporkWitchdon't use nouveau lol20:31
syb0rgI am using nouveau now, with no problems20:31
TheSilentLinknouveau is awful for 3d applications20:31
TheSilentLinkeg gaming20:32
syb0rgI don't game on linux20:32
syb0rgmost graphics intensive thing I do is play back 1080p video files =P20:32
syb0rgfor gaming I boot to windows 10, on a separate drive, with a SATA switch to power up only the windows drive so it can't mess with linux20:33
syb0rgwell I guess plasma is more graphics intensive than video playback20:33
syb0rgbut it runs fine on nouveau in any case20:33
SporkWitchthe binaries would provide much better performance20:34
syb0rgthis is true SporkWitch, but I go with opensource options when they work well enough20:34
syb0rgif I wanted to game on linux I would go proprietary20:34
SporkWitchsyb0rg: it'll probably result in fewer boots to windows; you'd be surprised how much stuff has native linux versions these days :)20:35
SporkWitchsyb0rg: heck, tomb raider works flawlessly for me on linux, never crashed or hiccoughed once; 20 minutes on windows and CTD lol20:35
syb0rgyeah that's nice and all, but I have lots of games in my library that only run on windows20:36
syb0rgI wish steam had pushed steamos harder20:36
syb0rgthat could have really changed things fast20:36
SporkWitchit's done a lot, and they do still push it; would be nice if they pushed harder though, agreed.  Vote with your wallet, it helps20:37
syb0rgWhat I would like to do is install windows in a vm with PCI passthrough for the GPU20:39
syb0rgbut my mobo does not support that20:39
SporkWitchsyb0rg: yeah, wanted to do that with my last desktop, bought the mobo a year too soon lol20:40
SporkWitchsyb0rg: next build will be doing that.  plan is a threadripper, 16-32GB of RAM, can use the existing GTX1060 from the desktop that died and just add a second one for the pass-through20:40
syb0rgyeah that sounds like a slick setup. I'd go with the 32gb RAM, it is a very nice amount to have20:41
syb0rgespecially since you are gonna have at least onevm20:41
syb0rg*one vm20:41
SporkWitchkind of how i'm leaning; though even with just 16, that's still 12GB for the guest, and without anything like firefox and whatnot eating up extra, just windows and the game20:42
jeffrey_fHow do I move my /home folder(s) from my boot ssd to my secondary drive?20:43
syb0rgI am so spoiled with all this RAM: I run a separate VM clone for each separate task I am doing. So I have a vm for browsing, a vm running vlc, a vm for hexchat, a vm for whatever other task...20:43
syb0rgthen I can save the state if I want to come back to it later20:44
syb0rgjeffrey_f, live boot to usb, then make your new partition, copy all your current /home/ files, and update fstab20:44
syb0rgprobably want to remove the current /home files from your root partition before rebooting also20:45
tomreynor just move everything20:46
jeffrey_fThanks syb0rg.  Would you know if there is a script?20:46
syb0rgtrue enough, tomreyn20:46
tomreynyou could actually do it from the running system, but it can be more difficult20:46
SporkWitch^20:46
syb0rgjeffrey_f, why would you need or want a script for this?20:46
SporkWitchnot really more difficult, just extra steps20:47
syb0rgcouldn't that introduce some problems with the state of files?20:47
holoniumHello20:48
syb0rghi holonium20:48
tomreynsyb0rg: you'd need to make sure they'r enot currently being accessed, then it's not an issue.20:48
holoniumI was wondering if anyone had any tips for migrating a technologically challenged user from Windows 10 to Ubuntu.20:49
syb0rgsounds like a slightly dangerous way to go about things20:49
SporkWitchholonium: point them at kubuntu; KDE, by default, looks and behaves like windows 720:49
syb0rgholonium, play around in the live environment until you are somewhat comfortable with it20:49
syb0rgand read guides until you fully understand the process of switching your pc over to ubuntu before attempting it20:49
syb0rgor have them do it if you are talking about someone else20:50
syb0rgalso kde is a good suggestion, or xubuntu/xfce420:50
SporkWitchxfce is going to be a bit more of a learning curve20:51
holoniumI have already been using Ubuntu for a couple of months. My mother is the sort of user that made a Windows 7 PC BSoD once a month for a year and got several hundred viruses on her computer.20:51
syb0rgreally? Always thought it was pretty straightforward and similar to windows in how it functions20:51
SporkWitchalso, most people react poorly to a lack of eyecandy, they associate simplicity with inferiority20:51
syb0rgthat much is true SporkWitch20:51
holoniumThere is a reason I am not switching her to BSD or Fedora.20:52
syb0rglol20:52
holoniumAnd that is it.20:52
syb0rgget her on arch20:52
syb0rgand if she asks for help tell her to troubleshoot it first20:52
oerheksseems like you know enough then, holonium20:52
SporkWitchsyb0rg: literally i've had people insisting win10 is better, just on screenshots, so i tossed in some of KDE using windows icons and window borders; suddenly they liked it (when presented as a windows example, rather than plasma's default "flat" appearance)20:52
syb0rgyeah, for someone who values appearance greatly I would probably not recommend xubuntu20:53
SporkWitchholonium: i'd go with kubuntu, then; it's basically the same as ubuntu just with the KDE stuff replacing the GTK stuff20:53
holoniumIf she troubleshoots anything, she nearly formats her HDD or gets some sort of virus or something like that.20:53
oerhekslife is full of surprises20:54
SporkWitchholonium: software installation can be simplified as "launch this, it's just like the app / google play store"20:54
jeffrey_fsyb0rg, nm about the script.20:54
holoniumIs there a way to lock her out of the terminal?20:55
syb0rgjeffrey_f, ok. It is a process with only a few steps: if you get stuck or something just ask20:55
SporkWitchholonium: don't put her in the wheel group and she won't be able to damage anything tthat matters20:55
syb0rgcan you install updates without sudo?20:56
holoniumOk. So make sure that she has access only to her home directory and is not a superuser, right?20:56
SporkWitchsyb0rg: no, you would need to explicitly whitelist anything you wanted to let her use, but if she can install stuff, she can also click "yes" to removing critical things to resolve a conflict20:56
holoniumThanks.20:56
SporkWitchholonium: superuser isn't really a thing outside windows; you're either root or you're not.  sudo is a tool that allows you to run commands as another user (usually root).  It can be configured to allow members of a group to do anything, or only specific things (up to and including specific arguments on the commands)20:57
syb0rghe gone20:57
jeffrey_fholonium, Make her a regular user.  Install TeamViewer and set it up on her system and on yours so you can remote in at any time.  Downside to regular user is she can't install anything.20:57
syb0rghe still gone20:57
BudgiiHi all, I have a USB drive that isn't being recognized in the file explorer. any ideas on how to fix this? lsusb lists the drive.21:05
syb0rgBudgii, what is on this drive? Is it partitioned? What kind of partitions?21:05
Budgiiits just a little usb storage device, no idea whats on it.21:06
Budgiiits one i've had, i think its blank to be honest21:06
SporkWitchprobably a single NTFS partition, then21:06
Budgiii did a data wipe on it about a month ago \21:06
SporkWitchor fat3221:06
Budgiimight be21:06
syb0rgI bet if you format it in gparted it will show up afterwards in file manager21:06
SporkWitchdefine "data wipe"21:06
Budgiiformated = data wipe21:06
Budgiilol21:06
Budgiithanks, i'll look for gparted.21:06
syb0rgif it still doesn't show up after formatting unplug and replug21:07
Budgiialright21:07
Some_PersonWhat package is needed nowadays for gdebi's password prompts to work as expected? Right now, in this system, it asks for the password in the console, which isn't ideal. I suspect maybe gksu provided this in the past, but that seems to be gone now in bionic?21:07
oerheksunless it is exfat, then you will need 2 tools21:07
Budgiiim going to backup a few files then get xubuntu21:08
kostkonBudgii, what have you got now21:08
Budgiikostkon, I have budgie. I'm hoping Xubuntu is a little bit more lightweight.21:08
oerheksSome_Person, why is "password in the console " not ideal, as you are in console already?21:08
oerheks no need to grab the mouse21:09
BudgiiI'm not even seeing this drive in gparted21:09
kostkonBudgii, might be just a little bit though21:09
Some_Personoerheks: Because if I'm downloading and opening a deb file from a browser, there's no console for me to type it into21:09
Budgiikostkon, yeah its just my machine will run fan on high when i have a java application running21:09
oerheksthat would open in softwarecenter..21:09
Budgiiother than that, it runs great21:10
Budgiimaybe i'll just forget it for today21:10
Some_Personoerheks: I'm using ubuntu with MATE, not the default environment21:10
Some_Personand it is opening with gdebi21:10
syb0rgBudgii, then try from the commmand line with parteed21:11
syb0rg*parted21:11
Budgiisyb0rg, what do i do?21:11
syb0rgfirst try parted /dev/sd[letter]21:11
syb0rgyou said it shows up in lsusb right?21:11
syb0rgdoes it show up in lsblk?21:11
syb0rghopefully it does...21:11
Budgiiim not sure how to read lsblk, lol21:12
syb0rgso sd whatever is a drive21:12
syb0rglike sda for instance21:12
Budgiisyb0rg, this is the device in lsusb: Bus 002 Device 006: ID 0781:5583 SanDisk Corp.21:12
syb0rgbudgii just pastebin your lsblk output21:13
Budgiisyb0rg, i removed a few obvious unrelated apps: here it is: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/fW9hVG73kt/21:14
syb0rghow big is the usb drive?21:14
Budgii64gb21:14
syb0rgand are there any other storage drives or disks in or attached to the computer?21:15
syb0rgother than your boot drive21:15
BudgiiI mean there is a mouse and keyboard, hdmi and then the usb attached.21:15
Budgiiis it sdb1?21:15
syb0rgok, so your usb drive appears to be /dev/sdb21:15
Budgiialright21:15
syb0rgso to format it, do: sudo /dev/sdb21:15
syb0rgsorry21:16
syb0rg*sudo parted /dev/sdb21:16
Budgiiokay, it opened GNU parted 3.221:16
Budgiiwhat do i want to run as the next command?21:16
syb0rgnow type print21:16
syb0rgdoes it say that it is a 64 GB disk?21:16
syb0rg(this is just verification)21:17
BudgiiNumber  Start  End     Size    Type     File system  Flags21:17
Budgii 1      1024B  62.2GB  62.2GB  primary21:17
syb0rgok, type mklabel21:17
Budgii62 close enough :D21:17
syb0rgyup21:17
syb0rgthen choose gpt21:17
Budgiiwhat do i do for label? It didn't like SanDisk or Zebra21:18
syb0rggpt21:18
Budgiisweet21:18
Budgiiafter yes, it says (parted)21:18
syb0rgso will this be a storage drive?21:18
syb0rgshould it be accesible in windows as well as linux?21:18
BudgiiI'm wanting to put some junk on it, then format my other one thats like 100+gb for Xubuntu21:19
BudgiiNo, just linux my friend21:19
syb0rgok, now type mkpart and I will walk you through the options21:19
BudgiiPartition name? []?21:19
syb0rganything you want21:19
BudgiiFile system type?21:20
leftyfbsyb0rg: you know there is gparted right?21:20
syb0rgext421:20
BudgiiNTFS?21:20
Budgiio21:20
syb0rgit didn't work leftyfb for whatever reason, didn't see the drive21:20
Budgiicrap. it said "Start?" i said yes21:20
syb0rglol21:20
syb0rgthat should be 021:20
BudgiiI'm at (parted) agai21:20
syb0rgok21:20
syb0rgthen start over with mkpart21:20
Budgiirepeat previous steps? k21:20
syb0rgand for end it will be 100%21:21
Budgiitype "100%" ?21:21
syb0rgyeah for end21:21
BudgiiWarning: The resulting partition is not properly aligned for best performance. Ignore/cancel?21:21
syb0rghmm, I hate when it does this. I would just ignore, honestly, unless someone else here has input21:22
syb0rgit can be annoying to figure out the ideal size21:22
Budgiimeh idrk :D21:22
Budgiii just need a file(s)21:22
Budgiii'll say ignore21:22
BudgiiI said ignore and i'm back to (parted) did I screw up?21:22
syb0rgnope21:22
syb0rgnow type quit21:23
syb0rgthen sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdb121:23
syb0rgmake sure you get the letter b in there, not a21:23
syb0rgsd *b* 1, lol21:23
BudgiiWriting superblocks and system corruption virus, continue?21:23
Budgii!!21:23
Budgiijk :D21:23
syb0rglol21:23
Budgiiit's done21:24
syb0rgcool, does it show up in file explorer yet?21:24
BudgiiYUESSIR!21:24
BudgiiYESSIR!21:24
syb0rgaw yeah21:24
BudgiiThank you!!21:24
syb0rgnp21:24
Budgiihow do you know this stuff? :D21:24
syb0rgmagic!21:24
syb0rgor from experience21:24
syb0rgtake your pick21:24
BudgiiHAH21:25
BudgiiSo i'm trying to drag and drop some files and it says i don't have persmisions. is this going to be a chmod +x?21:25
BudgiiI like the magi.21:25
syb0rginteresting. Do you have permission to access these files?21:26
syb0rgif you mounted the drive from file explorer you should have write access to it21:26
BudgiiYes I do. In Budgie, most things are set as .. like read? or something. So for .jar files i have to do chmod +x21:26
syb0rgfor copying you don't need +x on the files21:26

oerheksthat would be the new interface naming, if you want to roll back, use GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="net.ifnames=0 biosdevname=0"21:57
oerhekshttps://askubuntu.com/questions/767786/changing-network-interfaces-name-ubuntu-16-0421:57
oerheksthe other solution is to set a new proper bridge21:58
RedPenguinWe had a bridge setup in /etc/network/interfaces or is that an old method now?21:58
Bashing-omjonpc: Fid you motice the package manager's advise ? try ' sudo apt install wine-stable22:01

waltmanI'm having a strange printing problem since upgrading from 17.10 to 18.04. I can print from my linux box with the printer plugged in, and it works fine. I can print from my mac with the printer plugged into it, and it works fine. But if I share the printer on ubuntu and print from my mac, it looks like crap.22:39
waltmanActually a pdf I made with latex also prints fine on the shared printer. But for anything else, the images look ok but the text is all mangled.22:40
waltmanI tried reinstalling it on ubuntu, and reinstalling the driver on the mac. Didn't help.22:40
waltmanThe printer is an old HP P1006 laser printer.22:41
waltmanRemote printing worked fine on the last few ubuntu releases. I just noticed the problem after switching to 18.04.22:42

Bashing-omRoadRunner: Looking.22:46
hggdhBashing-om: interestingly, wine64 *is* in Cosmic22:49
Bashing-omRoadRunner: Well, ya miss represented the truth ..not an ext file system .. but " type vfat " . Windows file system . I am not too versed in the Windows file system - used to be the access rights are set in the mount of the fstab file .22:49
RoadRunnerBashing-om: I realized my miss representation after you signed off the other day :) sorry for the confusion22:51
Bashing-omhggdh: surprise surprise here too .. Maybe as I run X11 ? bet wayland does not support wine (??) .22:51
hggdhBashing-om: I do not know how wine interfaces with the displays, so I cannto really answer. But... I would not be surprised22:52
RoadRunnerBashing-om: my floppies are from when I used windows and I guess they are all likely to be formated that way; so is that the root of the problem?22:53
Bashing-omRoadRunner: Yeah, there are masks that need to be set - but I have no vfat experience .. the masks I have seen are directed to NTFS .22:54
RoadRunnerBashing-om: is this the question of dmask-and-fmask-mount-options?22:57
Bashing-omRoadRunner: something along those lines .. But i can give no direct advise . I do not say when I do not know .. and vfat .... " I know nothing" .23:00
RoadRunnerBashing-om: wonder what would be the best source to readup on this?23:00
Bashing-omRoadRunner: Lemme see what Uncle Google advises .23:01
krytarikRoadRunner: #xubuntu from yesterday.23:01
