BluesKajHi all10:54
EvilRoey hi, anyone here using Ubuntu?   running "modprobe nvidia" gives me: modprobe: FATAL: Module nvidia not found in directory /lib/modules/4.15.0-23-generic.  Before this, I ran the command apt-get install nvidia-390.  What gives?  I'm trying to figure out why the nvidia-390 package did not lay down an nvidia.ko under /lib/modules for this current kernel like it did for other kernels11:09
EvilRoeyBluesKaj: oh hi11:10
hateballEvilRoey: maybe it failed to build the modules for some reason11:12
BluesKajHi EvilRoey: make sure you don't have it blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf11:12
hateballthe nvidia modules that is11:12
hateballEvilRoey: is this a regular desktop install or what are you working with? typically dkms and all needed bits are installed so nvidia modules should be built for any installed kernel you have11:14
EvilRoeydesktop install11:14
BluesKajEvilRoey:  hope you didn't use the proprietary 390 driver from Nvidia's website, because it isn't supported after tkernel upgrades11:14
EvilRoey# 20140702 Roey Katz - Blacklist Nouveau; was causing trouble at boot vs. VESA VGA11:14
EvilRoeyblacklist nouveau11:14
EvilRoeyBluesKaj: OH.11:15
EvilRoeyoh, I see.11:15
EvilRoeyI did install nvidia-39011:15
EvilRoeyvia apt-get.11:15
EvilRoeyBluesKaj: could this be why?11:15
BluesKajno need to blacklist nouveau manually11:15
BluesKajnivdia-390 should install properly with apt since it's the repos driver11:16
BluesKajand that the 390 is the correct driver for yor gpu11:18
hateballEvilRoey: if you run "uname -r" what does that show?11:18
hateballEvilRoey: anyhow you could do "sudo apt-get --reinstall nvidia-390" and it should re-run all the scripts and dkms build the modules again, if it for some reason failed the last time11:20
hateballand if it was indeed dkms failing, it should have a log in something like /var/lib/dkms/nvidia11:21
BluesKajEvilRoey:  are yousure that the 390 is the correct driver ?11:22
EvilRoeyI saw that nvidia-390 was available11:25
EvilRoeyand I knew that it's the latest and greatest11:25
BluesKajEvilRoey:  the easiest method is to use the driver manager in system settings, it'll recommend the correct driver for your gpu and install it if you choose it.11:25
hateballwell the module should still build, it shouldnt be missing. if it's not the right driver for the card then it would at most fail to load :D11:25
EvilRoeyaye11:26
EvilRoeyI mean this did fial to load, as I mentioned above11:26
EvilRoeyhateball: one moment, I just saw your messages.11:26
EvilRoeyI've done --reinstall nvidia-390 a bunch of times, yet I don't see it producing an nvidia.ko at all11:26
EvilRoey$ uname -a11:26
EvilRoeyLinux gear 4.15.0-23-generic #25-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 23 18:02:16 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux11:26
hateballpersonally 390 did not play nice with my system, latest 396 beta from ppa works however. but again, the modules should at the very least be built11:27
hateballEvilRoey: check if there's any error log in /var/lib/dkms11:27
BluesKajlike...very simple I said above ..use the driver manager in system settings11:27
EvilRoeyhateball: there's no error log there at all11:28
EvilRoeyBluesKaj: so driver manager in system settings, ok11:28
EvilRoeywhen I'm home I will do that11:28
EvilRoeythank you BluesKaj11:28
BluesKajEvilRoey: don't muck about with experimenting with th elatraest and greatest , because it may not be so for your gpu11:30
BluesKajerr lataest and greatest11:30
* BluesKaj needs more coffee11:30
BluesKajheh, I discoverd that the onboard gpu on my new MSI Z370 is better than my old old nvidia pci ...much better video and more detailed on this old Panasonic 43" TV11:33
EvilRoeyhaha11:36
EvilRoeyneat11:36
BluesKajyup, the nvidia gt520 \was getting long in the tooth I think11:37
hateballEvilRoey: typically you can use "sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall" and it will pick the proper stuff for your system (it's the same as the gui thing)11:45
EvilRoeyhateball: ah alrih.11:46
EvilRoeyOH another issue:  I was trying to write a CD with k3b this morning and got the following error:  https://askubuntu.com/questions/287308/k3b-cdrecord-has-no-permission11:47
EvilRoeyI checked the permissions on /usr/bin/{cdrecord,cdrdao,etc.} and they're al 755 or looser11:48

EvilRoeyBluesKaj: btw so I installed the nvidia-384.. I looked under /lib for an nvidia.ko and didn't find one for this kernel13:48
EvilRoeystill13:48
EvilRoey!!!13:48
EvilRoeyso what's the issue?13:48
EvilRoey(i.e. I am not sure that installing nvidia-384 placed the module there either)13:48
geniiIf installed will be in /lib/modules/kernel-version-here/updates/dkms/nvidia_384.ko   or /var/lib/dkms/nvidia-384/sub-version-specific-directory-name-here/kernel-version-here/module/nvidia_384.ko13:52
