Good morning! [16:05] hi [16:06] I love MATE the most out of every official Ubuntu distro out there [16:07] Although this time around, when installing the graphics drivers, I'm getting a problem...more unique to MATE. [16:10] ...what problem? [16:13] Two actually...but the important one first... [16:14] The first is that every time I reboot my computer the refresh rate falls back down and I have to manually set it back up again. [16:15] The native resolution is 1080p, and the NVIDIA X settings recognizes that in "auto," but for some reason refresh rate is tied to that also. [16:40] Ah, proprietary drivers, I don't use those [16:40] lol [16:40] I game a lot, so I HAD to install them [16:48] I don't think nvidia drivers are at all "unique to mate" though... [16:49] The desktop environment doesn't manage those; they come with their own utility [16:50] It didn't do that with Kubuntu when I used it. Or regular Ubuntu. [16:50] Oh, I meant like this problem of resetting itself I've just encountered in 18.04 MATE [16:51] what's the output of `xrandr` and what's in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf? [16:55] Seems like I don't have the xorg.conf file [16:59] How would you get the system to create it? [17:01] Normally it's not needed, but the nvidia drivers used to create it [17:01] I'm not certain if that's still the case [17:01] Also you didn't paste the output of xrandr [17:02] Finally, what's the output of: lspci -nn -k | grep -A 3 VGA [17:02] This will tell use if you're using the binary driver or not [17:03] 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GP104 [GeForce GTX 1080] [10de:1b80] (rev a1) [17:03] Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. [MSI] GP104 [GeForce GTX 1080] [1462:3367] [17:03] Kernel driver in use: nvidia [17:03] Kernel modules: nvidiafb, nouveau, nvidia_drm, nvidia [17:03] !pastebin [17:03] For posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use https://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use https://imgur.com/ !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic. [17:03] (How do you get the output of xrandr?) [17:03] xrandr | nc termbin.com 9999 [17:04] This will automatically put it to pastebin, tell us the URL [17:04] It seems like you're using the nvidia drivers [17:04] So if you don't have /etc/X11/xorg.conf, well,it seems it's not needed anymore [17:06] Just before I do so, what personal info about me will it paste? [17:07] ...your display resolutions [17:09] http://termbin.com/nvx5 [17:10] OK, so, it says 1920x1080, with 60 refresh the default, and 144 the selected [17:10] (isn't that too high btw?) [17:10] And what's the issue, that it doesn't remember the 144? [17:12] Yeah, it doesn't remember the 144Hz [17:12] done [17:13] (144 is kinda standard for gaming, idk) [17:13] i did 'sudo apt-get install chromium-browser' to install chromuim, is this right [17:13] eny, sounds about right, yes [17:14] cool [17:14] coolAyanami: and what's in your ~/.config/monitors.xml ? [17:14] cat ~/.config/monitors.xml | nc termbin.com 9999 [17:14] http://termbin.com/43q9 [17:15] See the name there isn't correct [17:15] [17:15] While in your xrandr output it's 0 [17:16] Go again to the display settings and set it correctly, and see that it writes 0there [17:17] its been going for about 10 mins [17:18] eny: give us the context and the output. E.g .is this a raspberry or a pc? do you have a slow network? etc [17:19] Not sure how to do that. Both regular system settings and NVIDIA system settings have it set as DVI-D-0 [17:19] coolAyanami: just save the settings and check if they write them correctly [17:19] If not, try editing the file with an editor [17:20] rasberry pi and bad wifi [17:20] so yeah [17:20] its moving slowly [17:20] the output is 29% [2 chromium-browser 12.4 MB/45.0 MB 28%] [17:21] now 32% [17:21] eny, just a bad network then [17:21] ok [17:23] Adding "#" allows for writing comments in an xml, right? [17:24] AFAIK no [17:24] Maybe [17:27] OK, let me restart my computer [17:35] Changing the monitors.xml files didn't work. [17:36] I changed the line to say [17:38] Sounds like two bugs then, you'd need to file bug reports about them [17:39] i have install chromium but when i do 'chromium-browser' the window dosn't open [17:40] Do you see any errors? [17:40] never mind it just took a bit [17:40] sorry for wasting ur time [17:41] Where do I file a bug report? [17:43] idk [17:44] ...specific to Ubuntu MATE? Or would I have to file to regular Ubuntu? [17:44] Specific to MATE, to its monitor settings dialog [17:46] Right here? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mate [17:46] Seems I would need an account [17:47] Yes, to report bugs to either launchpad or github you need an account [17:47] OK [17:47] Well, thanks for now alkisg! [17:48] np [18:14] does ubuntu-mate have an app-center or something like that [18:15] eny, I think that would be software boutique from control panel? [18:17] it is not but theres something like it on Welcome [18:23] boutique disappeared for me on upgrade to bionic, not that i used it. [18:28] sixwheeledbeast^, Did you follow "Get the Ubuntu MATE snaps" from near bottom of https://ubuntu-mate.org/blog/ubuntu-mate-bionic-final-release/ ? [18:30] I don't use snaps. [18:36] eny, I'm using "sudo apt install synaptic" <== that one [18:37] It's been stable over the last years, while all the other software centers try to innovate and just dont work === DerRaiden is now known as DerRaiden`afk
