BluesKaj'Morning folks09:57
mparilloktecho: You could try asking in #ubuntu-qt, as Qt is now used across *buntu, and is no longer solely of interest to Kubuntu.10:25

ace__I have looked onilne for the answer to this but cannot seem to find it.15:42
ace__I noticed backports are enabled by default on Kubuntu 18.04.  I understand Kubuntu is moving to Plasma 5.13 soon via backports.15:42
ace__If I disable the backport repo will I continue to get point updates to 5.12 LTS?  I have a machine I'd like to keep very stable and the LTS is appealing to me.  Thanks!15:42
acheronukace__: 5.12 LTS updates will come in the updates pocket, not backports, so yes15:48

Elw3Is there a proper way of restarting kwin?17:04
tomracinghello every one, On my new 8th gen laptop I have some thermal issues and while trying to debug that some tools don't work. Probably because I update to the 4.16 kernel while all packages still expect 4.1517:29
tomracingshould I downgrade? and if so how to best do that?17:29
kubuntuhi17:33
oerheksreboot, select kernel 4.15 in the gub menu and you are fine to remove those 4.16 parts17:33

tomracingthanks will try that17:34
vitI've left free space when installing windows17:35
vitnow I tried to install Kubunut17:35
vitfirst I opted for one /boot partition and one for /17:35
vitinstalation failed with grub install error17:35
vitafter some googling it seemed that it is connected to EFI problems so I did a second install with efi partition, boot partition and root partition17:36
vitbut the system still doesn't boot17:36
Elw3I had that some days ago vit17:43
Elw3Basically it works if you use the automatic installation.17:43
Elw3Once you select manual you are fucked.17:43
vitthat's great to hear17:44
vitso in 2018 we don't have dual boot anymore or what?17:44

vithmm20:25
vitnope20:25
Elw2Yea that was my problem too but in the end it was what i needed.20:25
viteven when half of the drive was empty it suggested nuking existing w10 install20:25
Elw2The Disk i suppose boots with windows on this computer already?20:25
vitwell. it did. now it doesn't boot at all20:26
Elw2Is the live disk booting in _efi mode_?20:27
diogenes_vit, it's known issues when usind 2 disks better install on the same one20:27
vitdiogenes_: what are you talking about? I am installing on the same drive20:28
vitElw2: yes, the USB boots in EFI mode and I don't know how to change it20:28
diogenes_vit, i thought you meant that you've got HDD and SSD20:29
vitas far as I can tell, the installer assumes that the system uses whatever it was booted from -- in this case EFI.20:29
Elw2Normaly by disabling secure boot. But keep it, you NEED the efi boot moe to install to efi.20:29
vitto be honest, I don't know what w10 were using but I don't see any efi partition created by them20:29
vitsecure boot is disabled20:29
Elw2It must be enabled to install.20:30
Elw2Or else you cant confirm ubuntu to efi.20:30
diogenes_in order to install linux alongside with win10 it's necessary to use efi partition, what i'd suggest is to choose manual partitioning and create the usual partitions + a 300 MB /boot/efi fat32 partition and you should be fine20:31
vitElw2: really? all sourcese out there explicitely tell to disable secure boot20:31
vitok. so to recap -- enable efi, enable secure boot and create special efi partition?20:31
Elw2If secure boot is disabled you cant boot windows and i suppose you wanted to dual boot.20:32
diogenes_vit, enable uefi and disable secure boot20:32
diogenes_window should boot with secure boot off20:32
diogenes_the best way to do this kind of dual boot is actually to create the needed linux partitions while in windows, then just boot the usb and assign the already created partitions and you're good to go.20:34
Elw2Well ive found the only source that told me to enable it apparently, and it worked that way.20:34
vitElw2: secure boot was disabled and windows were booting just fine20:36
vitElw2, diogenes_: do you guys actually know anything about these things?20:36
Elw2No20:37
Elw2else i would not have struggled when i did this.20:37
vitElw2: ok then. thanks for trying to help but it feels like you were just waisting our time20:40
Elw2All i can say that i enabled it, made sure the live disk booted in efi mode and used the automatic install method then it worked.20:40
=== kubuntu is now known as Guest96917
vitdiogenes_: what does it matter where the partitions are created?20:41
Elw2Cause windows wont let you fuck up the boot partition.20:42
diogenes_vit, it matters20:43
diogenes_if you resize a windows partition from windows, there is far less chances to lose data20:43
diogenes_but of course it's absolutely up to you, some people learn from other mistakes, some from their own, some never learn...20:44
vitdiogenes_: and some don't read what others write and assume random shit20:45
diogenes_mirror effect20:45
vitfor example if I wrote: "even when half of the drive was empty it suggested nuking existing w10 install" then it clearly implies that I am trying to have both OS on the same drive and that I do not need to resize anything20:46
vitand guess what? that's exactly what I wrote!20:46
diogenes_then guess what, you can't read back20:47
diogenes_as i said not to choose automatic partitioning20:47
diogenes_i clearly said to choose manual20:47
Elw2Catfight!20:49
vitdiogenes_: look mate, English is clearly not your first language. I suggest you cool it down and instead of hanging out on IRC wasting people's time invest into some language / reading skills20:51
vitpeace20:51
diogenes_in such cases, italians always say: "pull out the bung so you won't blow up"20:53
diogenes_good luck figuring out where the bung is in your case20:54
krytarikWell, luckily they've already been crossposting to #ubuntu all the time too.20:56
Elw2vit youre an arse for insulting ppl who try to help you and diogenes_ you are an idiot for not proper reading  what others write :D20:57
krytarikElw2: Can you please stop this too now?20:57
diogenes_Elw2, and you are the man in the middle right? even below the idiot level?20:58
saucelayerHey, so I installed kubuntu-desktop on my Ubuntu machine and I was wondering if there was a way to stop it from bleeding over into another desktop21:33
saucelayerFor example, the KDE-style cursors would start to appear on Ubuntu-Unity21:34
Elw2I guess they do that in kde/qt programs?21:45
saucelayerWell, I'd thought the settings for each program would stay the same for the user but not the global settings21:55
saucelayerUnity uses Compiz and KDE uses KWin, right?21:55
saucelayerSo the cursor shouldn't be overridden for example21:55
saucelayerUnless the window manager isn't responsible for the cursor21:56
saucelayeridk that much about the underworkings of that21:56
Elw2Each program can use their own cursors.21:56
Elw2So a kde program likely uses its kde cursors.21:56
saucelayerElw2: But it happens regardless of the program21:59
saucelayerIn Chromium for example, it will use the KDE cursor styles21:59
saucelayeron Unity21:59
Elw2I think chromium IS using QT.22:00
geniigtk22:02
Elw2Oh.. brainfart then.22:03
saucelayerOkay, I just tried it out on firefox to test it  out and it used normal Unity cursors22:05
saucelayerBut Qt Creator and Chromium uses the KDE ones22:06
saucelayerIt's just moderately annoying >.<22:06
Elw2Chromium is based on webkit22:09
saucelayerOkay, I found a solution here, in case this chat is logged: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=148414722:09
saucelayerIs there anyway to have separate settings for this on two different desktops?22:10
saucelayerOr must X Cursor be global?22:10
saucelayerAlso, if not, what would be the proper default22:11
Elw2There are settings in booth kde/unity which say "force the other theme in the respective other graphik lib". Maybe playing around with that helps.22:12
saucelayerThanks, I'll try that out22:14
saucelayerThanks for all your help22:14
