[20:24] Have you tried automated installation yet? [20:24] nope [20:25] it never gives me option that I'd be happy with [20:25] hmm [20:25] nope [20:25] Yea that was my problem too but in the end it was what i needed. [20:25] even when half of the drive was empty it suggested nuking existing w10 install [20:25] The Disk i suppose boots with windows on this computer already? [20:26] well. it did. now it doesn't boot at all [20:27] Is the live disk booting in _efi mode_? [20:27] vit, it's known issues when usind 2 disks better install on the same one [20:28] diogenes_: what are you talking about? I am installing on the same drive [20:28] Elw2: yes, the USB boots in EFI mode and I don't know how to change it [20:29] vit, i thought you meant that you've got HDD and SSD [20:29] as far as I can tell, the installer assumes that the system uses whatever it was booted from -- in this case EFI. [20:29] Normaly by disabling secure boot. But keep it, you NEED the efi boot moe to install to efi. [20:29] to be honest, I don't know what w10 were using but I don't see any efi partition created by them [20:29] secure boot is disabled [20:30] It must be enabled to install. [20:30] Or else you cant confirm ubuntu to efi. [20:31] in order to install linux alongside with win10 it's necessary to use efi partition, what i'd suggest is to choose manual partitioning and create the usual partitions + a 300 MB /boot/efi fat32 partition and you should be fine [20:31] Elw2: really? all sourcese out there explicitely tell to disable secure boot [20:31] ok. so to recap -- enable efi, enable secure boot and create special efi partition? [20:32] If secure boot is disabled you cant boot windows and i suppose you wanted to dual boot. [20:32] vit, enable uefi and disable secure boot [20:32] window should boot with secure boot off [20:34] the best way to do this kind of dual boot is actually to create the needed linux partitions while in windows, then just boot the usb and assign the already created partitions and you're good to go. [20:34] Well ive found the only source that told me to enable it apparently, and it worked that way. [20:36] Elw2: secure boot was disabled and windows were booting just fine [20:36] Elw2, diogenes_: do you guys actually know anything about these things? [20:37] No [20:37] else i would not have struggled when i did this. [20:40] Elw2: ok then. thanks for trying to help but it feels like you were just waisting our time [20:40] All i can say that i enabled it, made sure the live disk booted in efi mode and used the automatic install method then it worked. === kubuntu is now known as Guest96917 [20:41] diogenes_: what does it matter where the partitions are created? [20:42] Cause windows wont let you fuck up the boot partition. [20:43] vit, it matters [20:43] if you resize a windows partition from windows, there is far less chances to lose data [20:44] but of course it's absolutely up to you, some people learn from other mistakes, some from their own, some never learn... [20:45] diogenes_: and some don't read what others write and assume random shit [20:45] mirror effect [20:46] for example if I wrote: "even when half of the drive was empty it suggested nuking existing w10 install" then it clearly implies that I am trying to have both OS on the same drive and that I do not need to resize anything [20:46] and guess what? that's exactly what I wrote! [20:47] then guess what, you can't read back [20:47] as i said not to choose automatic partitioning [20:47] i clearly said to choose manual [20:49] Catfight! [20:51] diogenes_: look mate, English is clearly not your first language. I suggest you cool it down and instead of hanging out on IRC wasting people's time invest into some language / reading skills [20:51] peace [20:53] in such cases, italians always say: "pull out the bung so you won't blow up" [20:54] good luck figuring out where the bung is in your case [20:56] Well, luckily they've already been crossposting to #ubuntu all the time too. [20:57] vit youre an arse for insulting ppl who try to help you and diogenes_ you are an idiot for not proper reading what others write :D [20:57] Elw2: Can you please stop this too now? [20:58] Elw2, and you are the man in the middle right? even below the idiot level? [21:33] Hey, so I installed kubuntu-desktop on my Ubuntu machine and I was wondering if there was a way to stop it from bleeding over into another desktop [21:34] For example, the KDE-style cursors would start to appear on Ubuntu-Unity [21:45] I guess they do that in kde/qt programs? [21:55] Well, I'd thought the settings for each program would stay the same for the user but not the global settings [21:55] Unity uses Compiz and KDE uses KWin, right? [21:55] So the cursor shouldn't be overridden for example [21:56] Unless the window manager isn't responsible for the cursor [21:56] idk that much about the underworkings of that [21:56] Each program can use their own cursors. [21:56] So a kde program likely uses its kde cursors. [21:59] Elw2: But it happens regardless of the program [21:59] In Chromium for example, it will use the KDE cursor styles [21:59] on Unity [22:00] I think chromium IS using QT. [22:02] gtk [22:03] Oh.. brainfart then. [22:05] Okay, I just tried it out on firefox to test it out and it used normal Unity cursors [22:06] But Qt Creator and Chromium uses the KDE ones [22:06] It's just moderately annoying >.< [22:09] Chromium is based on webkit [22:09] Okay, I found a solution here, in case this chat is logged: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1484147 [22:10] Is there anyway to have separate settings for this on two different desktops? [22:10] Or must X Cursor be global? [22:11] Also, if not, what would be the proper default [22:12] There are settings in booth kde/unity which say "force the other theme in the respective other graphik lib". Maybe playing around with that helps. [22:14] Thanks, I'll try that out [22:14] Thanks for all your help [23:18] What's the state of Kubuntu backports, is there 5.13? [23:32] onlyabyte: https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/ubuntu/backports - for reference btw, and it would appear no.
