Meadcouldn't wait for an answer?  Today is modern Democracy's birthday gotta be patient00:22
migzuGood evening. Does anyone have a clue about how to enable intel_pstate driver on an installation that was originally on an AMD cpu. Switched it to a modernish intel a while ago, but I can't seem to get turbo enabled.00:28
migzuIt seems to want to run only cpufreq. Didn't find any packages to install related to intel_pstate00:29
migzuIt's an ubuntu server 16.04 on the GA kernel. If it matters00:30
oerheksmigzu, grep -i pstate /boot/config-$(uname -r)  # this should say y = enabled, no need for "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash intel_pstate=enable" anymore ?00:33
oerheksthis is from kernel 3.9 and up00:33
migzuYeah, I get CONFIG_X86_INTEL_PSTATE=y. and I'm running 4.4.0-128. However I don't get "intel_pstate"-folder in  /sys/devices/system/cpu. Only cpufreq there00:35
migzuSo I can't acces any of the turbo of freq related options00:36
oerheks cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq && cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_driver && cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor00:37

MidTwitteranyone recommend a good email client for ubuntu that can only download the last say 50 messages from an email server when syncing?00:40
migzuInstalled cpufrequtils, still nothing. Should it require a reboot?00:41
oerheksmigzu, yes, i think so, good spot tomreyn00:42
tomreynoerheks: may not be sufficient, though, i also don't have it on 4.15.0. what's lacking is a kernel module and cpufrequtils are just the user space utilities to interface with the kernel modules00:44
migzuThen I'll have to wait until the next power outtage to see the result. the server is "kinda" production. Than you both for help!00:44

LachezarHey all. Upgraded kernel to 4.15.0-24-generic, and now my laptop does not boot properly. It shows black screen. Pressing random buttons on the integrated (not USB) keyboard seems to make it run, sometimes moving the mouse for 10-15 seconds also seems to make it work, but it's unreliable.08:02

jeffguorgdreamhawk, there are dependencies between packages whatever distro you use. this means when you remove one package, a crowd of related maybe forced to removed from system. before i have more info about your system and what you did, i assume the 'purple ubuntu prompish' means ubuntu failed to start the dm(gdm or lightdm). use Ctrl Alt + F3 to switch to a tty, login and try systemctl status. see if you can find 'lightdm.service' or 'gdm.service' and see if10:18

h3hi i am working with lvms, i have created a logical volumes using lvcreate, after that created the filesystem and mounted it.. now if i do lvextend, it says extended but when i do df -h  it doesnt show the increase in number12:36
tomreynh3: df operates on file systems, lvextend operates on logical volumes (unless --resizefs is also provided)12:45
tomreynand i would recommend against online resizing of both LV and file system if you can prevent it.12:46
BluesKajI never muck about with live partitions, better to use a media partitioner like gparted IMO12:47
tallfellowhi folks!12:51
tallfellowubuntu newbie here, i'd like to know how much free disk space i have left on my system, and i can't understand the output of df12:52
rifogreetings12:52
rifoyou can use --human-readable12:52
tallfellowthanks rifo, that makes it easier to understand how much space there is12:53
tallfellowwhat does the Mounted on column mean?12:53
tallfellowwhy are there so many rows???12:53
tallfellowi only have one disk!12:53
rifosome are virtual drives, if you only want to show your one disk you can add a path (for instance "df --human-readable ~"12:54
rifo~ is your home directory12:54
BluesKajtallfellow, still have a windows partition and UEFI, then that's why12:54
rifoit also shows usb disks etc..12:55
rifowhen automounted (that they usually are)12:55
tallfellowso the virtual drives are what's confusing12:55
tallfellowdf -h / is what i want12:55
BluesKajdf -h works too12:55
rifoi guess -h is the same, i prefer using the long variant so i don't forget later what i am actually using when typing it out of habit xD12:57
=== coconut is now known as coconut_
tallfellowthank you BluesKaj rifo13:00
tobraI have a system with a broken apt. When I run `apt-get -f install` I run into errors because of a full /boot partition. Is there any easy fix? Is the boot partition a logical volume that I could just expand? Details are here: https://paste.debian.net/1032207/13:03
tomreyntobra: "export LANG=C" to get english language output (in this temrinal until you close it)13:05
tomreyn(i can understand it, though)13:05
tobraAfter `export LANG=C`the output is still German.13:06
tomreyntobra: which kernel are you running right now? cat /proc/version13:06
tobraLinux version 4.4.0-81-generic (buildd@lgw01-02) (gcc version 5.4.0 20160609 (Ubuntu 5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.4) ) #104-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jun 14 08:17:06 UTC 201713:06
tomreynwow, you didnt upügrade your kernel for 2 years?!13:07
tobray13:07
tobrathis machine doesn't get a lot of love13:07
tobrahere’s `df -h` https://paste.debian.net/1032208/13:08
tomreynsudo dpkg --purge linux-image-4.4.0-62-generic linux-image-4.4.0-66-generic linux-image-4.4.0-70-generic linux-image-4.4.0-71-generic linux-image-4.4.0-72-generic linux-image-4.4.0-75-generic linux-image-4.4.0-78-generic13:08
tomreynthis should provide enough space to be able to operate with apt again13:08
tobrais it safe though?13:08
tomreynyes, all you do there is bypass apt to purge kernels you no longe rneed /run13:09
tobrau sure, I have the newer kernels to fall back to already?13:09
tomreynapt will realize the change when you run it next time, possibly offering to remove the headers as well.13:09
tomreynthe kernel you are running now is not actually installed anymore13:10
tobraok13:10
tobraso I shouldn't be able to reboot, right?13:10
tomreynthe above command does not remove the two latest kernel images13:10
tomreynyou are able to reboot both now and after running the abiove command, since you still have more kernel images installed.13:11
tomreynthat's unless they were not properly installed13:11
tobra"dpkg: Abhängigkeitsprobleme verhindern Entfernen von linux-image-4.4.0-62-generic:" -- dependency problems prohibit the removal of…13:11
tomreyncan you show: dpkg -l linux-image\* | nc termbin.com 999913:11
tobra(I get the error for all the packages)13:11
tobrahttp://termbin.com/h3in13:12
tomreynokay then i guess you will need to have to remove one of the kernel images manually13:13
tomreynor maybe some more13:13
tobracan’ŧ I just expand /bbot and have apt take care of things?13:13
tomreynsure, if you have unpartitioned space thats an option13:14
tobrathat sounds safer than fiddling manually removing kernels, bc I wouldn't really know what I’m doing ;-)13:14
tomreynboot is backed by /dev/sda1, which is a partiton, which means you'd need to rewrite the partition table, though13:15
ppfhow is repartitioning ever safer than fiddling with apt13:15
tomreyni wouldn't consider this to be safer than removing an outdated kernel image13:15
rifohonestly, removing an old kernel image or two sounds way safer to me then to fidle with partitions when you  don't know what you are doing13:15
tobraok.13:16
tobraso how do I manually remove the image?13:16
rifoif you are unsure you can move it out of boot to for example /root so in case you make really a bad mistake you can recover it with a boot cd13:16
ppftobra: apt purge linux-image-4.4.0-62-generic13:17
tomreynwont work13:18
ppfwhy?13:18
tobrappf: https://paste.debian.net/1032213/13:18
tomreynwe tried dpkg --purge aready13:18
ppf(skimmed the convo only)13:18
ppfah my bad13:18
tomreynrm /boot/vmlinuz-4.4.0-6?-generic13:19
ppfapt purget linux-image-4.4.0-66-generic13:19
ppf^et^e13:19
tobrappf: similar result13:19
tomreynneither apt or dpkg will work in this situation, it will just keep returning "unmatched dependencies"13:20
ppftomreyn's command then :)13:20
tobraok13:20
tobraand then apt -f install?13:20
ppfya13:21
tomreyntobra: i'd do the "dpkg --purge" first13:21
rifohe already tried that13:21
tobrahttps://paste.debian.net/1032214/13:22
tomreynso my suggestion is: sudo rm /boot/vmlinuz-4.4.0-6?-generic; sudo dpkg --purge linux-image-4.4.0-62-generic linux-image-4.4.0-66-generic linux-image-4.4.0-70-generic linux-image-4.4.0-71-generic linux-image-4.4.0-72-generic linux-image-4.4.0-75-generic linux-image-4.4.0-78-generic; sudo apt -f install; sudo apt update; sudo apt -f install13:22
tobratomreyn y… did that but tha last 2 in reverse order.13:23
tomreynright, and this stuffed /boot again13:23
tobramaybe apt-get filled up /boot again and I have to delete some mere?13:23
tomreynnow you need to remove more kernel images manually13:23
tobray…13:23
tomreyncorrect13:23
tobraso the *.7?-generic’s now?13:24
tomreynright: sudo rm /boot/vmlinuz-4.4.0-7?-generic13:24
tomreynthen: sudo dpkg --purge linux-image-4.4.0-62-generic linux-image-4.4.0-66-generic linux-image-4.4.0-70-generic linux-image-4.4.0-71-generic linux-image-4.4.0-72-generic linux-image-4.4.0-75-generic linux-image-4.4.0-78-generic; sudo apt -f install; sudo apt update; sudo apt -f install13:25
tomreynand then you'll need to apt upgrade && apt full-upgrade13:25
tobrahttps://paste.debian.net/1032215/13:25
ppfthat's a 30G disk?13:26
ppfwow13:26
tobrappf: it’ſ a VM13:27
rifotry to remove the -extra first13:27
ppfwhy didn't you say so13:28
ppfjust make a backup and repartition13:28
tobrawell, I suggested repartitioning ;-).13:28
tomreynactually we should remove the initrd's, too, they are the largest13:28
tobraso `rm initrd.img-4.4.0-6?-generic initrd.img-4.4.0-7?-generic` ?13:29
tomreynright13:29
rifotry this: sudo dpkg --purge linux-image-extra-4.4.0-66-generic linux-image-4.4.0-66-generic13:29
tomreyntobra: in /boot, that is13:30
ppfrepartitioning is dangerous unless you can actually cp your disk to somplace save13:30
rifoit couldn't remove the images since the extra packages are installed too and depend on it13:30
rifo(goot thing i can speak german)13:30
tobratomreyn and now?13:31
rifo*-t+d (but obviously i can't type english)13:31
tomreyntobra: once you run rm against the initrd's you'll be able to run apt -f install13:31
tomreyntobra: i dont think it will run full this time13:31
tobraafter rm, I had `/dev/sda1                    472M    134M  314M   30% /boot`13:32
tomreyntobra: after apt -f install succeeds, run sudo apt purge linux-image-4.4.0-62-generic linux-image-4.4.0-66-generic linux-image-4.4.0-70-generic linux-image-4.4.0-71-generic linux-image-4.4.0-72-generic linux-image-4.4.0-75-generic linux-image-4.4.0-78-generic13:32
tomreynthen: sudo apt -f install; sudo apt update; sudo apt -f install   # and then you'll need to apt upgrade && apt full-upgrade13:33
rifothe purge command earlier complained that the linux-image-extra-* packages depend on the linux-image-13:33
rifothat he was trying to purge13:33
tobraI think, it ran full again, bc it regenerated the deleted images.13:33
tomreynshouldnt be an issue when using apt rather than dpkg13:33
tobrahttps://paste.debian.net/1032218/13:33
tobrayep… the old images are back: v13:34
tobrahttps://paste.debian.net/1032219/13:34

justQuestionshi@ll, if you try to connect to a server via ssh .... first time there promt a message with the hostKey(protection against spoofing). (i know, that there are sometimes more than just one.) where can i find this hostKey? and how is it possible to set your own hostKey to the server?13:36
tobrahttps://paste.debian.net/1032221/13:36
crandonHi, I have an intel 8265 ac wifi interface in my laptop. I can create additional wifi interfaces (ie another station mode interface), but only 1 can be up at on time, so effectively I can't have more than one interface working at the same time. Do you know how it can be figured out if the card support this at all and if so what needs to be configured SW wise to make this possible?13:36
rifogood =) then remove some others too (same with 62 70 71 )13:36
rifothat should give you more space then (hopefully) =)13:38
BluesKajcrandon, one wifi chip = one wifi interface, that's it afaik.13:38
tobrarifo yep: https://paste.debian.net/1032222/13:39
tobraand then I retry `apt -f install`?13:39
rifoyep =)13:39
tomreynjustQuestions: on the server, you find the keys at /etc/ssh/sshd_*_key ; a hash of the hostkey is stored on the client in ~/.ssh/known_hosts13:40
tomreynjustQuestions: you can generate other keys for the respective encryption schemes and place them there on the server, which should work as long as opensshd can handle them.13:41
tobraI think that worked this time13:41
tobrastill 31M left on /boot13:41
tomreynjustQuestions: it's also a good way to lock yourself out, if ssh is your only means of access.13:42
rifogood =) you should still remove the old kernels after this, to avoid it running full again13:42
tobray… how?13:42
tobra`sudo dpkg --purge linux-image-4.4.0-62-generic linux-image-4.4.0-66-generic linux-image-4.4.0-70-generic linux-image-4.4.0-71-generic linux-image-4.4.0-72-generic linux-image-4.4.0-75-generic linux-image-4.4.0-78-generic` ?13:42
rifotry first : (if that removes any olds):  apt autoremove13:43
tobradoes this look ok? https://paste.debian.net/1032223/13:44
crandonBluesKaj: At least with atheros this seem to be possible (https://superuser.com/questions/592714/is-it-possible-to-add-2-interfaces-to-my-wireless-nic-to-run-as-a-wireless-mesh). You can create ie 2 interfaces and use one as an AP the other as a station/mesh mode interface.13:44
tobraremoves up to `linux-image-extra-4.4.0-87-generic`.13:44
rifoif you current one is not one of them yet (forgot what version you are running)13:44

justQuestions@tomreyn: thx. i am using kitty, i know the storage place there, too. ssh would be the only way of access to this server.13:46
tomreynjustQuestions: what's the purpose of replacing the servers' ssh host keys?13:47
tobrayep… ~300M not on /boot13:47
BluesKajcrandon, well, I'm not familiar with that setup since most of my wifi chips have been BCMs..that's the first I've herad of such a setup13:48
tobra*now13:48
rifonice =)13:48
tobrayep… looks like i can use apt again.13:49
tomreyntobara: as a reminder: <tomreyn> then: sudo apt -f install; sudo apt update; sudo apt -f install   # and then you'll need to apt upgrade && apt full-upgrade13:49
rifo<- prefers aptitude by the way, well just a matter of taste in my opinion ;D13:49
tomreyn*tobra13:49
rifowell i am off, gotta go =o13:50
rifogot luck on your further "adventure" =)13:50
tobrabye and thx.13:50

justQuestions@tomreyn: the idea is just that i store one hostKey for this server and i am able to connect to the server for the first time secure from spoofing.13:51
crandonBluesKaj: so now I'm 100% this is possible with some interfaces, the only question is if the intel 8265 supports it which I still couldn't figure out.13:52
justQuestions@tomreyn: openSSH is using openSSL, is there an easy way to change to libreSSL?13:54
tomreynjustQuestions: it would be better to update your client based on the servers' host key than fixing the host keys on the server. you want to be able to rollover those host keys quickly when needed.13:54
qwebirc46642Have problems with sso, one accounts.13:56
tomreynjustQuestions: you'd need to rebuild it13:56
justQuestions@tomreyn: but than is the first connection not secure, if i dont know the hostKey .... and in case of doubt i gave an attacker access to my maschine. :(13:58
tomreynjustQuestions: right, you need to make the clients aware of the host key before they connect for the first time. a bit of a hen and egg problem.13:59
tomreynjustQuestions: i dont know which deployment mechanisms you (don't) have in place there, so it's difficult to suggest a solution which fits your needs while not impacting security.14:01
justQuestions@tomreyn: sure: hen and egg.14:08

pragmaticenigmasanroot: beyond that, there are configuration files that Ubuntu uses to list all of your applications in launchers and system file paths. Finally, manual installation mean apt will not be able to automatically update those applications anymore since it will not be aware of there installation14:37
holywaterbut lxrandr is not persistent, the settings are reset upon reboot14:37

haasnhfp: Usually you give ZFS the entire disk, without even partitioning it15:25
haasnBut typically there's no reason to ever prefer MBR over GPT except if you're using 10-20 year old hardware15:25
haasnand/or software15:26
blackflowhfp: it doesn't. if you give it entire disk, it will implicitly partition it with GPT15:26
blackflowpartitioning is better than full disk tho'15:26
pavloshaasn: does rpc-gssd.service run on the nfs client computer?15:27
haasnpavlos: I'm not sure if I understand your question, but rpc-gssd is required for NFS clients, yes. https://0x0.st/spRu.txt working example, https://0x0.st/spRQ.txt not working example15:29
honor600hi15:29
hfpok so this command: `# sgdisk     -n3:1M:+512M -t3:EF00 /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_disk1` is unnecessary, this is only for rootfs, right?15:29
hfpFrom here: https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/wiki/Ubuntu-18.04-Root-on-ZFS step 2.215:29
hfp2.2a is the only one I want, it will use the whole disk to make a zfs partition15:30
blackflowhfp: EF00 is the ESP, which of course you don't need if you don't plan to boot via EFI from that disk15:30
blackflowhfp: partition the disk yourself, because if you don't, ZFS will do it for you, so you have better control. Make it somewhat smaller than the entire disk so you don't lock yourself into exact sector number size in case you need to replace the drive15:31
hfpblackflow: ok, thank you15:34
haasnAlso is there a way to get a newer version of zfs on ubuntu 16.04 LTS?15:52
haasnThe version it has is so ancient, and upstream is refusing to provide support for problems that seem to have manifested themselves (with some ubuntu update) because it's ancient15:53
lotuspsychje!latest | haasn15:54

I got someone onsite (not very techy) who I'm walking through troubleshooting. So far from screenshots on 1 device, it still had the ESSID connected but no ip address. After sitting there for about 2 hours, it seemed to get an ip but was still inaccessible.20:07

hggdhElinKattunge: mine only shows byobu's summary. Do you see both tmux and byou's?21:01
ElinKattungeI can't seem to see the tmux backend though, I haven't actually executed tmux. Lemme have a look at htop.21:01
hggdhElinKattunge: byobu will call tmux (or screen) for you, and control it21:02
algidanyone know how i can get Terminator to open in a secondary display instead of the primary one?21:03
ElinKattungeInteresting21:04
ElinKattungeSo it has21:04
hfpalgid: that's probably up to your window manager and not Terminator21:04
ElinKattungebut it doesn't seem to abide by tmux configs.21:04
ElinKattungehggdh: I still can't seem to open a terminal emulator.21:12
hggdhElinKattunge: what I do: I use the default shell, and manually run byobu (or tmux. or screen as last resort); I do not have them set to auto-start because I do not want stacked tmux sessions21:20
=== Sven_vB_ is now known as Sven_vB
hggdhelibrokeit: so, if you really want to *always* have byobu auto-started, change its default to autostart (F9 while in byobu) and set it to auto-start21:21
donpdonpi did a clean install of ubuntu (16.04 to 18.04) and now tar does not auto-detect .gz files. any idea how to get it to work like it did before? example: $ tar tf thing.tar.gz would work as expected but now it simply says not a tar file.21:22
luxioif I installed a program with `dpkg -i`, and now there's a new version out, to upgrade do I just download the new version and dpkg -i? Will it upgrade the necessary files?21:22
blackflowdonpdonp: works here. tar should autodetect.21:24
blackflowdonpdonp: are you sure it's a tar file?21:24
donpdonpblackflow: doh. maybe something weird is in my home directory to affect the behaviour of tar (!)21:25
donpdonp$ file caddy_v0.11.0_linux_amd64_custom_personal.tar.gz => gzip compressed data, was "caddy_v0.11.0_linux_amd64_custom_personal.tar"21:25
donpdonp$ tar tf caddy_v0.11.0_linux_amd64_custom_personal.tar.gz => tar: This does not look like a tar archive21:25
blackflowdonpdonp: well are you sure it's a tar. gunzip it first, then run file21:26
donpdonpblackflow: are you using the tar-1.29b-2 package?21:26
donpdonpive done that. its a valid file.21:26
blackflowdonpdonp: yup, that's tar in Bionic21:27
blackflow!info tar21:27
ubottutar (source: tar): GNU version of the tar archiving utility. In component main, is required. Version 1.29b-2 (bionic), package size 245 kB, installed size 908 kB21:27
blackflowdonpdonp: `which tar` should be /bin/tar    is it?21:27
donpdonpyes21:27
donpdonpwoah, tried making a new tar.gz and that works. perhaps it is a problem with caddy.tar.gz21:29
blackflowdonpdonp: so, if you run  tar -czf somefile.tar.gz  somedir/      and then tar -tf somefile.tar.gz      it doesn't work?21:29
NeuiI've started an another X session (using startx) on an another tty with another user. When I switch from that tty to the default tty, lightdm "crashes" (user gets logged out, backscreen then displays login). Is this know? I upgraded from 16.0421:29
donpdonpblackflow: im happy calling it a caddy.tar.gz problem and not a tar problem now. thx.21:30
blackflowdonpdonp: yw21:30
srj55I'm on Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS.  When I try to upgrade nginx 0.7.65, the updates all fail.  apt-get upgrade can't find files, etc.  I assume this release is too old. Is there any version of nginx I can upgrade to?  Need to support TLS 1.2 in nginx.  thanks21:30
newdimensionAnyone experiencing issues booting? I'm getting an error that snapd failed to load21:31
blackflowsrj55: 10.4? as in Lucid Lynx?21:32
srj55blackflow:  yes21:33
blackflowsrj55: yeah, no. that's long unsupported.21:33
blackflowyou could upgrade.21:33
blackflow!eolupgade21:33
blackflow!eolupgrade21:33
ubottuEnd-Of-Life is the time when security updates and support for an Ubuntu release stop, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases for more information. Looking to upgrade from an EOL release? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades21:33
blackflowsrj55: TLS1.2 requires new OpenSSL which will in turn break your entire system, even if you compiled newer nginx from source.21:34
blackflowjust.... upgrade to Bionic :)21:34
srj55blackflow:   ok, i'll upgrade.  will this completely overhaul my server?  just running a basic LAMP stack with a python web app, mysql.21:34
blackflowsrj55: I suppose it will yes, you're running a VERY old and unsupported system. pretty irrensposible for a public server.21:35
srj55blackflow:  ok, i'll look into an upgrade path forward.  any recommended site, or just the one you just referenced?21:35
blackflowsrj55: the one referenced.21:36
blackflow(EOLUpgrades)21:36
srj55blackflow:  thank you.21:36
blackflowsrj55: oh yeah, newer Ubuntus now run systemd, and with Bionic there's netplan.... so yeah, it'll totally overhaul your system but hey, it's a good thing.21:37
NeuiAlso when starting with startx, gnome-terminal won't start (when starting it in another terminal, it'll display something about "StartServiceByName Timeout was reached")21:44
blackflowNeui: frankly, I doubt that's even possible these days. you could run startx on multiple ttys, but I doubt you can run multiple display managers like that21:45
blackflowNeui: other than "just because", what's the reason to do it?21:46
NeuiI'm using seperate users (one for work, one for normal use) on seperate ttys.21:47
blackflowNeui: why tho?21:47
blackflowlike at the same time?21:47
NeuiI don't want to mix settings21:48
blackflowwhat settings?21:48
NeuiIntelliJ, firefox (I know there are profiles but still)21:49
blackflowNeui: those are saved in user's home directory. you can use normal single instance of xorg-server and just login as another user.21:49
blackflowrunning separate xorg-server will absolutely not change that21:50
NeuiI am not so sure about what you mean. Of course are the settings in the users home dir.21:52
blackflowright so why do you think you need to run two xorg-server instances? just login as different user and that user's home directory will be effective for any program you run as that user.21:52
ClauRICUbuntu21:53
Neuiblackflow: Well 2 instances one for one user on one tty and the other server instance for the other use on an different tty21:55
blackflowNeui: but what for?21:57
naccNeui: you want to actively use two logged-in x instances locally on the same machine?21:57
naccNeui: how would that even work?21:57
Neuinacc: Well it worked fine on 16.04. I logged in on lightdm (on tty7), CTRL+ALT+F6, login, startx and I it just worked21:58
naccNeui: you are switching between two logged in sessions then21:59
Neuinacc: Since I am seperating stuff between them so I don't use work-related stuff on my personal user21:59
naccNeui: this doesn't make sense22:00
blackflowNeui: that doesn't   yeah :)22:00
naccNeui: since you can only see one or the other anyways, why can't you just do waht blackflow is saying22:00
Bashing-omNeui: nacc xfce: I stat another instance of an Xsession on a different display by ' ctl+alt+f2 ; startx -- :1 ; ctl+alt+f8 ' . Do not know how this will work in say GDM .,22:00
blackflowNeui: you can, and should, just login as different user from ONE display manager.22:00
blackflowBashing-om: don't encourage :)22:00
naccBashing-om: yes, you *can* do this, but i don't see exactly why you want to in general :)22:00
Bashing-omnacc: blackflow :: Agreed . special case only .22:01
NeuiWell can you quickly switch users when only using one tty?22:02
NeuiI am not doing that often but it is convinent when I can quickly do that22:03
algidanyone know how i can get Terminator to open in a secondary display instead of the primary one?22:05
naccseems like unnecessary optimization for an infrequent operation, Neui22:05
naccNeui: the point being, the multiple ttys do not offer any separation of data; it's the multiple user accounts that do.22:07
blackflowand very difficutl if not impossible task nowadays, xorg is expected to be run as root due to session management, and you also need KMS supported GPU22:07
Neuinacc: I know, I use multiple ttys because of the convience to switch22:08
blackflowNeui: also what nacc said. xorg-server is a display server, it couldn't care less about uid you login as, or more precisely, the programs that access it.22:08
hfpTrying to share my zfs dataset over nfs. This is what I have for the sharenfs property: https://dpaste.de/16X2 but I can't get the share to show with showmount or when trying to mount on remote hosts. Any ideas?22:08
naccNeui: I guess I don't see it as that convenient, if it doesn't work :) and it seems like a fragile setup anyways22:09
blackflowhfp: ZFS is NFS aware:  https://www.hiroom2.com/2016/05/18/ubuntu-16-04-share-zfs-storage-via-nfs-smb/22:10
hfpblackflow: Yes I know, this is why I am setting the sharenfs property but it doesn't seem to have any effect22:10
blackflowhfp: where are you setting it? that looks like fstab22:11
hfpblackflow: on the dataset's properties, this is from `zfs get sharenfs`22:11
blackflowah I see.22:11

arooniquestion; in trying to get emojis to appear on ubuntu 18.04; i have this font config file in my ~/.config/fontconfig/ ; but it looks like the binding is so strong that emojii based numbers appear everywhere lol.  anyway to reduce the strength of the emoji binding?  https://gist.github.com/arooni/134c021935576a3d5b12dba24ba771c722:22
aroonii.e id like to keep using emojis but maybe see a bit less of them hahhaa22:22
UmeaboyHi! When using Ubuntu 18.04 to build the nightly of zeroltexx my cpu cores goes sky rocket high and stays like that for a long time.22:23
UmeaboyThis does NOT happen in my preferred dist Mageia 6.22:24
UmeaboyI want to report this error using ubuntu-bug, but I don't know what to report against.22:24
UmeaboyI did add the ccache command to my bashrc.22:24
UmeaboyAnd the jack command.22:24
Umeaboy4 GB used out of 8 GB in total.22:24
UmeaboyWhen I say nightly I mean the nightly of Lineage.22:25
oerheksso, building should not go on full trottle??22:25
UmeaboyNop.e22:25
UmeaboyNope.22:25
UmeaboyI see processes related to clang++.22:25
Umeaboy4 of them.22:25
UmeaboyThe top on uses 98%.22:25
oerheksoh, not gcc, but clang.. good to tell22:25
Umeaboydpkg -S clang++ gives me: dpkg-query: no path found matching pattern *clang++*22:28
hggdhapt-file search clang++ returns clang-6.022:29
hggdh(and 3.8 and 4.0 and 5.0)22:29
hfpblackflow: heh, I had my options in the wrong order. it should be opts,rw=... i.e. the = always goes with rw22:30
granttrecis there any way to get a rollback like feature for apt?22:30
hfpbtw, do you know a way to validate properties?22:31
oerheksUmeaboy, really an issue for #LineageOS-dev , sure that 100% cpu is not bad when building .. unless an error log grows too22:32
xxavihi22:34
xxaviI connect my USB DVD external to de system and it not detect, any idea ?22:34
Teb82hey quick question to anyone that might know, is there a software or a way to know for sure what the driver is for a device in Ubuntu22:36
Teb82and it might be a driver problem22:37
ikoniaTeb82: what is "your" problem22:37
ikoniarather than some hypothetical sitatuion that doesn't make sense22:37
Umeaboyxxavi: What does dmesg say? Paste the output on hastebin.com and paste the resulting link here.22:39
UmeaboyTeb82: lsmod will tell you a lot.22:40
Umeaboylshw will also tell you.22:40
UmeaboyRun lshw as root.22:40
blackflowhfp: what do you mean validate?22:40
Teb82I am trying to disable the touchscreen driver for my laptop, I know I can do xinput and disable it or write a script to disable it on boot up but my laptop is one of those 2 in 1s and the driver for the pen shows up as well but I will run lshw and see if it will turn up a more specific answer22:42
Teb82thank you22:42
xxaviUmeaboy: hi, here my dmesg: https://hastebin.com/zabecotute.vbs22:44
tomreyngranttrec: only with a snapshotting block device layer (LVM2) or filesystem feature (zfs, btrfs from what i read)22:46
psichasguys, where network manager saves names of devices? i got one very big name...22:46
Umeaboyxxavi: What does mount say?22:46
UmeaboySorry.22:46
Umeaboydf22:46
xxaviUmeaboy: here my lshw output: https://hastebin.com/guraqojeya.nginx22:46
xxaviUmeaboy: https://hastebin.com/ifebafedox.erl22:47
UmeaboySeems like it failed to mount.22:47
UmeaboyYeah.22:48
granttrectomreyn: thats too bad, but snapshots are an ok alterative, guess I had to learn filesystems eventually22:48
UmeaboyIt doesn't mount.22:48
UmeaboyRead error.22:48
UmeaboyHave you googled the issue?22:48
xxaviUmeaboy: I not found any info22:49
Umeaboyxxavi: https://www.google.se/search?source=hp&ei=S6A-W_GWDYnIsQH_hoXoBg&q=HLDS+Inc+%2B+Slim+ext+blu-ray+error+-71&oq=HLDS+Inc+%2B+Slim+ext+blu-ray+error+-71&gs_l=psy-ab.3...1461.26433.0.27998.33.31.0.0.0.0.612.3833.13j15j1j5-1.30.0....0...1c.1.64.psy-ab..3.17.2601.0..0i22i30k1j0i22i10i30k1j33i160k1j33i22i29i30k1j33i21k1.0.AlSjlnwMAyo22:49
UmeaboyWhat's the firmware version of that device?22:50
UmeaboyMaybe there's an update released.22:50
qwebirc8854Hi, I'm using PBIS to connect to Active Directory and for the most part everything works well. One question - when doing certain operations through the GUI, such as managing some settings, I have to "unlock" using the password for the local account used when installing Ubuntu - is it possible to alter the bahaviour for the password prompt? Can I authenticate using my AD account?22:51
xxaviUmeaboy: it have last firmware version22:51
Umeaboyxxavi: How do you know that?22:54
UmeaboyIt seems like this is a device made in a collaboration between Hitachi and LG.22:55
xxaviUmeaboy: I check it on Windows22:55
tomreyngranttrec: normally you can just undo things with apt, though. what is the issue you're trying to handle, if any?22:55
UmeaboyI'd say you'd have to ask in #ubuntu-dev, but I could be wrong.22:56
UmeaboySounds like a mount issue.22:56
UmeaboyWhen you last used it, did you unmount it properly before disconnecting it?22:56
granttrectomreyn: nothing specific, but after a mistake at work today I want to get better at package management22:56
UmeaboyIf not, you can get mount issues.22:57
UmeaboyWhat you can do is to check if it mounts with gparted.22:57
UmeaboyOr the disk-utility rather.22:57
tomreyngranttrec: i see. you can always review your latest requests to APT in /var/log/apt/history.log* (those can have been cancelled later) and the latest actual output of when apt was running in /var/log/apt/term.log*22:59
tomreyngranttrec: reviewing those can help you roll back by just undoing those actions.23:00
granttrecthanks, good to know23:00
xxaviUmeaboy: hmmm, I change the USB port attached and now it work fine, thanks for all23:00
granttrectomreyn: can packages have "tags"?23:00
tomreyngranttrec: what kind if tags?23:01
granttrectomreyn: tags created by a user, so say you needed a bunch of packages for a project, you could group them for easy install/removal23:03
ikonia723:03
tomreyngranttrec: not really, but you could create meta packages which just depends on these packages you want, push them to your own PPA, and then just add this PPA to a system you want to manage this way.23:04
tomreyngranttrec: alternatively, you could just write a shell script or setup some deployment solution to install them23:05
granttrecshell script makes sense, I may have been too idealistic23:06
tomreynif it's about multiple computers, maybe take a look at ansible - it's somewhat easy to get stated with. easier than other deployment solutions anyways.23:07
tomreyngranttrec: there are also tasks (ooold documentation, but should still be correct) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Tasksel23:09
granttrectomreyn: thanks for your wise counsel mate23:09
tomreyn;) welcome, also got to go now. good luck.23:10
