=== guiverc_d is now known as guiverc [02:45] oerheks: I think they are testing how far they can go [02:47] yes, we know the drill [02:51] good morning to all [02:52] hi lotus [02:55] interesting list https://blog.ubuntu.com/2018/07/03/fresh-snaps-from-june-2018 [02:57] yeah I thought so too, snap installed the quake-sha.. & was wondering why people used to play it for ages... 10+ mins later I was still playing it :) (& howdy lotuspsychje) [02:57] lotuspsychje: morning [02:58] and... good night to all [02:58] snap install tmnationsforever corsixth flare-rpg sdlpop pencilsheep shattered-pixel-dungeon [02:58] nn hggdh [03:06] hey oerheks guiverc hggdh [04:42] oerheks: thanks for your review there. [04:43] soon, infozip will be at 10 years without a stable release ;) [04:51] tomreyn - no, that's a very stable release :) [04:52] as stable as the old full backup you took 10 years ago, since when you created incrementals [05:01] :p [06:22] good morning [06:23] howdy ducasse :) [06:23] hi guiverc :) how are you doing? [06:24] great thanks ducasse, you? [06:25] ok here, thanks - having a cold coke and a cigarette to wake up :) [06:27] cold coke.... i haven't done that in decades (though it was pepsi for me)... large hot milo (malt drink) does it for me :) [06:30] it's a periodic thing here, in a little while it will be something else [06:32] The something else for me right now is bed - vice irc . GN all \o [06:32] night Bashing-om [06:34] guiverc: We have more fun tomorrow :P [06:34] :) [ or should that be :( ] [11:56] Hey folks === blackflow is now known as blockflaw [13:36] ping [13:36] right now i have a server mobo, with ecc memory, maxed at 32gb and an onboard 8 port SAS2 controller [13:37] a pretty good setup--i think memory is the only concern [13:37] blockflaw: [13:37] i was looking at the seagates re8 liner [13:38] line [13:38] right, so that should work more than well with a striped mirror or even raidz2 [13:38] with raidz2 i could get up to 50TB of space [13:39] that might push me into needing more memory [13:39] nah, don't take that 1GB per TB so strictly [13:39] it all boils down to what's the load profile you want to optimize for [13:40] does zfs let you convert a raidz1 into raidz2 [13:40] or maybe build a raidz2 as degraded [13:40] afaik no [13:40] i kinda want to use one of the drives to migrate my data [13:40] that's the problem with ZFS, no way to upgrade/downgrade/change a vdev once defined [13:41] but afaik you _can_ start with a degraded array and add missing drives later [13:41] well hot spares are not the worst idea === blockflaw is now known as blackflow [13:43] hot spares are nice, you don't have to rush to the server with a replacement. [13:43] and you know when a disk dies, there's that panic that another one is about to go belly up soon [13:44] which, incidentally, and against all odds, happened to me once. a 2-way mirror, one disk died, got replaced and while it was resilvering, the other died too. [13:44] yeah ive had a close call within weeks once [13:44] since then I said nowai, raidz2 or nothing. [13:44] hitachi deskstars [13:45] deathstars? :) [13:45] i ordered the ultrastar replacement, put it in and within a few days another one bit the dust [13:45] yeah, that wasn't the best choice in drive [13:45] although the others have been running for a long time now [13:46] HGST are fine drives these days. if Backblaze stats are to be trusted. [13:46] i found a procedure to make a degraded array, but looks like you need to make a file the size of one of the disks, which is kind of a non-starter [13:47] hays: on freebsd? you can use the gnop [13:47] no this will be linux [13:47] on linux... not sure what to use for a sparse file [13:47] oh `truncate` [13:48] yeah im reading about it [13:48] trick being to remove it from the array right after zpool created it [13:48] zpool offline and zpool detach if I'm not mistaken [13:48] hah yes [13:48] https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/322352/create-raid-z2-in-degraded-state-possible [13:49] right I guess no need to detach, offlining should suffice before 'replace' [13:58] man lga1150 i dunno i guess it was limited to 32gb.. there's nothing ecc out there in motherboards that goes pst that [14:01] wow, not even non-ecc [14:32] hays: what do you mean? https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/X99E_WS/specifications/ [14:33] and iX systems is selling 1TB RAM thingies, I'd have to look up the specs on that [14:33] yeah im talking socket 1150 [14:33] oh [14:33] if i wanted to try to find a modo that woul take same ram/cpu [14:34] but im going to give it a shot [14:34] 10 tb and i think ill try raidz2 [15:26] "help!111 i have an issue here!!! but i wont tell you what it is!!!" [15:26] yeah, seems so [15:27] we got two of them now ;) [15:28] I guess we're mind readers [15:28] i'd respond to that, but you can just read my mind [18:05] evening! [19:33] good evening to all [21:19] oerheks: sometimes it is simply not worth the time to correct someone [21:25] yes, but sometimes it is worth it :-D [21:25] i am in dubio [22:13] upgrading to 18.04 with 4 desktops, after that removing 3... [22:19] ? [22:19] a user is? [22:22] yes, messing up the system in ##linux, getting help in #u .. without details ofcourse, no, we like guessing [22:27] :(
