diogenes_!ask | dragon34505:38
ubottudragon345: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience05:38

ubottuDon't feel ignored and repeat your question quickly; if nobody knows your answer, nobody will answer you. While you wait, try searching https://help.ubuntu.com or https://ubuntuforums.org or https://askubuntu.com/05:42
nomenonspiffy05:42
dragon345hello, i need help with audio on my PC.  i have speakers plugged in and yet there is no sound when i try to play any music ort watch any videos.  my sound is turned up on both the speakers and computer.  and when i acess the sound settings all it says is "establishing connection to pulse audio.  please wait..."05:43
nomenondragon345, Have you gone through https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting05:45

nomenonso then the troubleshooting page says to run, find /lib/modules/`uname -r` | grep snd05:54
nomenonand see if you have sound modules installed05:55

diogenes_dragon345, did you look into pavucontrol?06:30
dragon345yeah i did06:33
dragon345all it says is establishing connection to pulse audio.  please wait06:33
dragon345idk how to get rid of it06:33
nomenonclick on mousie system task manager   kill it06:34
dragon345did that, trhan tried to open it06:36
dragon345same thing06:36
diogenes_dragon345, what is the output of: lsb_release -a and also uname -r06:36
dragon345No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID:Ubuntu Description:Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS Release:16.04 Codename:xenial06:37
dragon3454.13.0-39-generic06:37
diogenes_oh i see, i'd advice you to write a usb stick with xubuntu 18.04 and boot it live and try the sound there06:38
dragon345i have a USB drive.  where do i go to do that and how06:39
diogenes_first download this app for writeting the usb stick: https://etcher.io/06:39
diogenes_writing*06:39
diogenes_after that you grab this torrent: http://torrent.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/bionic/release/desktop/xubuntu-18.04-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent06:40
diogenes_i guess you know how to use the torrent?06:41
dragon345nope lol, is it hard06:41
diogenes_dragon345, ok where are you from?06:41
diogenes_i'll give you the mirror for direct downlioad06:42
diogenes_at least the region, NA, SA, Europe, Northern Europe and so on...06:43
dragon345im in the USA06:43
diogenes_ok then click on this, and download it: http://mirror.us.leaseweb.net/ubuntu-cdimage/xubuntu/releases/18.04/release/xubuntu-18.04-desktop-amd64.iso06:44
dragon345alright, what is that?  it seems like its going to take a while to downoad06:46
diogenes_now i need to go offline for some half an hour, after you download the .iso, you do: 1. insert the usb stick (at least 8 GB), 2. open the etcher application 3. write your usb stick with etcher 4. shutdown the pc 5. start it again and press either esc or f9 or f12 for the boot menu to pop up 5. there you choose to boot from usb and wait till it boots, once it's done booting, you can open firefox and try the youtube for sound06:47
diogenes_if you have troubles with any of the above steps, you ask here, somebody will answer, if nobody answers, be patient till i join.06:47
dragon345also, just to make sure im doing it right, i have the etcher electron on the USB stick.  Zubuntu-18.0 torrent on my pc right?06:48
diogenes_dragon345, this one you need: https://github.com/resin-io/etcher/releases/download/v1.4.4/etcher-electron-1.4.4-linux-x64.zip06:49
diogenes_click on it and download06:49

alex_hey guys can i ask does anyone know if the latest iso has support for installing into baytrial devices?  What i mean is they have a 32bit EFI but 64bit CPU so you need a hybrid boot file.19:40
alex_thanks19:40
loptaalex_: Is that true of all Bay Trail devices?19:41
alex_i'm not sure lopta19:42
loptaalex_: Do you have disks >2T in size?19:42
alex_i have this Linx 1010 touchscreen tablet transformer thing19:42
alex_it has a 64bit CPU but the EFI is only 32bit so some things won't boot, you can modify and respin the iso's if neccessary19:42
loptaalex_: Does it have BIOS too?19:43
lopta...or just EFI?19:43
alex_nope19:43
lopta(UEFI?)19:43
alex_not sure, i've literally only managed to get things DD'd to a usb to boot19:44
loptaWell that's something, anyway.19:44
loptaI'm glad you were able to boot from USB.19:44
alex_it shipped with Windows 8, i've had Windows 10.2 and Ubuntu, Kali, Xubuntu and Parrot Linux on it so far, also managed to boot Android-x8619:44
alex_however the accelerometer doesnt work, touch screen did19:48
loptaPromising overall then.19:49
alex_when i'm not so poor i'll buy a surface lol19:49
nomenonalex_ likely more entertaining with your current route :)19:51
alex_for sure, i love the little thing.  cost me 60 euro on ebay19:54

xubuntu17wHi there. I don't use IRC much, so please forgive me using a guest login.20:40
xubuntu17wI noticed the pop-up ui for volume control doesn't have a mute option in Xubuntu 18.04. Can this be changed?20:41
loptaHello xubuntu17w20:45
xubuntu17wHi21:01
xubuntu17wBest solution I've come up with so far is:21:01
xubuntu17wamixer -D pulse set Master 1+ toggle21:01
xubuntu17wShould have been built into the UI, I think.21:02
xubuntu17wWonder whose idea this was.21:02
diogenes_xubuntu17w, there is mute switch for both volume and microphone21:03
loptaI couldn't say.  I'm not near a Linux box.21:03
xubuntu17wIs there a cloud service you guys prefer to share images for screenshots?21:04
diogenes_imgur21:04
xubuntu17wAhh, yeah. Its the pulseaudio panel plugin that I'm talking about21:06
xubuntu17wIn 14.04, when you clicked on the icon it muted21:06
xubuntu17wPritScr used to trigger a nice diaglog in Xubuntu 14.04. Not in 18.04?21:08
xubuntu17w*PrintScr21:09
diogenes_xubuntu17w, watch this: http://i.imgur.com/cx19gDa.png21:09
xubuntu17wThat's a still image of the slider moved to mute. I'm looking for a click, as opposed to a slide solution.21:10
xubuntu17wRight now I just added a new launcher to my panel that runs a toggle command to amixer21:11
diogenes_oh ok21:11
bauxitHi, I am installing my new (used) laptop and I would keep it minimal as much as I can. I have been started with Ubuntu minimal iso and I am at the DE install part. I am going for XFCE4 but cannot make decision between simple xfce4 and xfce4 --no-install-recommends21:24
bauxitIs there any reasonable difference between the two result?21:24
loptabauxit: I could test it but probably won't have time this week.21:31
krytarikbauxit: https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/xfce4 - for reference.21:31
loptaDoes Xfce4 installed that way differ a lot from the Xfce4 in Xubuntu?21:32
krytarikYep.21:32
loptaAha!21:33
nomenonbauxit, just use mini.iso and install xubuntu desktop meta package    unless you legit have like 2gb hdd21:33
Unit193You could even select the Core task if you prefer to select your own browser, office suite, etc.  I'd recommend tasks over metas.21:35
nomenoni likely used the wrong word21:36
nomenoni was just referring to the xubuntu desktop option on the mini installer21:36
Unit193That indeed would be the task.21:36
nomenonI started with the core but found it easier to remove a couple things then add a bunch21:37
bauxitI did not get the DE selection menu so I am going for the manual install but would be great to keep it minimal 'cause I use approx 30% only from the pre-installed softwares21:38
bauxitI do not care about built-in games/cdburner/etc21:38
bauxitso if I could skip them with the no install recommends argument woudl be fine21:39
bauxitbtw I checked the potential disk usage in the install command summary and without recommends it should use 130MB only but without the argument it would use 661MB21:41
krytarikBecause it'll be missing out all of Xorg too then.21:42
nomenonbauxit, I think some virtualization software to play around before hand would work well for you >:D21:45
loptaDoes Xubuntu use Wayland or X11 ...or both?21:45
bauxitforgive me if I ask dumb question but Xorg should not be a required dependecy or if it is why will ignore the whole xorg?21:45
loptanomenon: That's not an option for everyone.21:46
Unit193bauxit: Try  apt install xubuntu-desktop^  vs  apt install xubuntu-core^  ?21:46
nomenonlopta, why21:46
loptanomenon: I used to run VMs on my old work laptop but my new work laptop has that capability disabled.21:47
nomenonyou can use virtualbox off a usb at the library21:47
loptanomenon: ...and none of my test rigs at work can do virtualisation.21:47
bauxitUnit193: ubuntu-core install would take 1345MB21:47
bauxitI do not think it is for me :D21:47
loptanomenon: That doesn't sound very practical.21:47
bauxitsorry xubuntu-core21:47
Unit193bauxit: That was with the carrot?21:48
bauxitcarrot?21:48
Unit193And interesting, I'll have to look.21:48
loptaCaret ^21:48
bauxitwithout21:48
Unit193Caret*21:49
bauxitjust `xubuntu-core`21:49
Unit193Yeah all bets are off with that, then.21:49
nomenonroughly 1gb difference21:51
loptaCorporate IT said virtualisation shouldn't be disabled on my work laptop but I don't think they know how to turn it on.21:51
nomenonlopta, bios settings21:52
loptanomenon: Can't get into the CMOS setup program ("BIOS")21:52
nomenonhack it21:52
loptaDon't think it even has one.21:52
loptabrb, phone21:52
bauxittbh looks to me all DE going to be more and more bloatware with many unnecessary built-in apps but I do not get the poit why it is going to be a standard21:52
nomenonoh ya21:52
loptaI have to go.21:53
bauxitwell, I just quickly installed xorg and xfce4 wihtout recommends and the result was (O.o)22:21
bauxitso that was too minimal... that's all, thanks guys22:21
nomenonlol22:22
