[10:21] Morning [12:53] <_stink_> mornig [13:14] Good Morning [13:14] https://www.stilldrinking.org/interviewing-is-broken [13:15] “So, using whatever language you want, php, python, perl, javascript, program something that gets today’s date and time, then writes it to a file.” [13:15] Me: [13:15] $ date > today.txt [13:15] “Well. Okay then.” [13:15] Result: “We don’t feel you have the right skill set.” To be fair, I didn’t know what closure was back then, but not like I didn’t know it two hours after the interview. [13:16] lol. [13:18] I like the "Use InnoDB" [13:20] Yeah, that one was my favorite [13:21] next to $ date > today.txt [13:22] <_stink_> i ask essentially zero questions that amount to a programming test. i ask a lot of "hey you know , what do you like about it? what don't you like about it?" [13:22] its weird, I haven't had these interview experiences, EVER. [13:23] <_stink_> "have you ever used any of features A, B, C, or D? what problem were you trying to solve?" [13:23] I did get asked what some C code did when I interviewed at Arbor, after claiming to not know C anymore because I hadn't used it in 10+yrs. But my response is nothing like this guys. I've never thought, "dick" after an interview question. [13:25] > “Then why am I using php? You know the dollar signs aren’t real money, right?” [13:25] Well, at Arbor I think they were looking for anything that had C experience [13:26] since even after my interview for an unrelated position they asked me about my C experience [13:26] so it wasn't a complete "I'm not a programmer at all, I'm a web designer and you're showing me C code" experience [13:29] wow, this guys blog is fun. [13:29] https://www.stilldrinking.org/chipotle-bias lol [13:29] Was it Tommy Beedle? [13:33] Name is somewhat ringing a bell [13:34] He likes to ask everyone C stuff. [13:34] He isn't there anymore, but he was there for like 10yrs. [13:36] https://www.stilldrinking.org/things-i-send-to-recruiters [13:38] cmaloney: hahaha, zomg, that one is great. [13:44] hahaha, oh the setup for "I would rather be that guy’s boyfriend than work in the ad industry again." [13:44] so good [13:48] Yeah [22:15] evening ya'll [22:23] howdy [22:23] how is the day so far? [22:23] well it's 5:30 pm here now lol how bout you man? haven't seen ya'll in quite a while now [22:24] but it's been pretty good thus far [22:31] 5:30pm? you.must be central now [22:31] g'day! and it is a good day. [22:31] so dar so good. just being myself as best i can [22:31] howdy gamerchick02 [22:36] its beautiful outside. [22:36] not too hot, but I still got sweating biking to a meetup :) [22:37] Wanna work on my team as a Sr Engineer? https://boards.greenhouse.io/wikimedia/jobs/1225209?gh_src=475f97e61 :) [22:40] yes. [22:44] but I'd prefer it if you hire me and then when I need to visit, we meet in Petaluma instead of SF :) [22:44] I'm looking for work. My project ended at work. There were layoffs and a mass exodus. [22:44] It was a really good year and then it was a bummer of a month :( [22:44] jrwren: I've been in SF at the office a total of 2 times this year. [22:45] 3, maybe 4, times last year [22:56] jrwren: Ugh. Sorry to hear that. I was wondering how things were faring for you. [22:57] I knew they were having layoffs, but wasn't sure if you'd gotten hit by them [22:57] I have some leads, so I'm hopeful. [22:57] I haven't yet. I'm still there. [22:57] seems a common ailment [22:57] Ah, OK [22:57] Good to hear. [22:57] but yeah, GTFO [22:58] Still need to figure out how we can make a tech cooperative or something [22:58] a research lab of interesting shit that pays well and doesn't expect results === havenstance1 is now known as havenstance [22:59] Funny; when I was younger I wanted Dungeons and Dragons to be real. Now I want fun and stable employment to be real
