yellowhey guys, I'm using ubuntu 16.04 but I need to run a legacy site using php 5.5.9. Any clean/easy way to get this installed? The usual ppa:ondrej doesn't include 5.5 any more. I'm going to look at migrating the sites if time/budget permits but that seems unlikely at this point.08:32
blackflowyellow: clean/easy? nope. that version of PHP is long gone. even if you compiled it from source, it's probably very much vulnerable.08:35
yellowblackflow: thanks for the info. it's not ideal but I'll have to put time aside to review and update the site08:39
mr_louI've had some file-date problems for many years now. I record videos at 9 am with my camera. Time is set correctly in the camera. When I view the content of the SD card on Ubuntu, it says the file was created at 10 am. I've set the time correctly in Ubuntu and set the correct timezone I'm in. There is no timezone to be set in the camera.08:43
mr_louIf I call a video command (melt) on Ubuntu and output information about the video, it correctly says that it was create at 9 am. But Nautilus says 10 am.08:44

metaldemonah okay, that's alright.09:32
metaldemonguiverc: long shot: can there be any difference when it comes to drivers on ubuntu based distros?09:33
guivercany difference - yes.  90%+ will be the same; but differences one ubuntu-based can cause problems the upstream distro doesn't  (which applies with debian [upstream of ubuntu] though ubuntu & debian are very close..)09:35
metaldemonI wanted to breathe new life into my old 2014 ish asus laptop. any OS works on it but the asus touchpad drivers are always an issue. On the linux side it does not seem to find a suitable driver for it.09:37
metaldemonI figured since Zorin is based on ubuntu that I could try my luck here09:37
blackflowdepends on your definition of "very close". other than both using dpkg ecosystem, and ubuntu being "based on" debian's unstable repo (plus modifications to those packages), I find them significantly different distros.09:37
metaldemonwhen I try: "cat /proc/bus/input/devices" I don't see the touchpad listed anywhere. A quora page says this indicates it could mean I am not using the right kernel or there is just no support for this touchpad. what should I do?09:39

ubottuA chroot is used to make programs believe that the directory they are running in is really the root directory. pragmaticenigmafSharp: There isn't a clear answer, I'm not understanding the end goal of what you are doing. And therefore have no clear idea if what you are attempting to do will work15:27
pragmaticenigmaJillnJackJack: EFI requires a specific partition to be on the drive that the UEFI system is able to locate. Older machines, the MBR needed to be located within a specific range of the disk for BIOS to located. The newer machines and file systems, this limitation was less of an issue15:29

But on that hard disk, I've got an extra partition, formatted with luks. And I've got it mounted in linux on the host, and I'm reading/writing to it etc while the VM is running. In practise, it works.15:45

aidrocsidYep, pragmaticenigma, just added that repo and am installing the drivers. :D Thanks16:19
oerheksmx160 is not in the list http://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/134859/en-us16:19
snapdatapragmaticenigma: I can switch back and forth between the two with no problems. It's just the nvidia drivers are *sloooow*, my desktop UI effects are faster on the intel, and the few games I play run more or less the same between the two, which shouldn't really be the case16:20
oerhekstoo new?16:20
pragmaticenigmaaidrocsid: once you have those installed, the control panel has the ability to adjust vsych ... which is what I believe might be causing your monitor flicker ... you might also want to check you video playback. If it is VLC, it also has some tweaks to help with video flicker. I have noticed that with the nvidia drivers, they go away once installed16:20
snapdataoerheks: er sorry, i typo'd super hard. gtx 105016:21
aidrocsidOkay cool, I'll check that once it finishes and I boot back in.16:21

oerheks!cookie | pragmaticenigma16:24
ubottupragmaticenigma: Wow! You're such a great helper, you deserve a cookie!16:24
pragmaticenigmasnapdata: The lid closing is an issue I've seen on many support forums. Part of it is a race condition between the kernel sending power state signals, I also think some of it is related to having an integrated GPU and discreet GPU running at the same time, which is a more recently supported feature.16:29
snapdatapragmaticenigma: ahhh okay, I gotcha. glad to know I'm not the only one!16:29
aidrocsidPragmaticEnigma, should the changes be applied to VLC once I have NVIDIA's drivers or is there something I needto set for that?16:34

CodeMouse92Or just the entry for the user in the user list?16:42

CodeMouse92mustmodify: AFAIK, that doesn't actually delete /home/user16:43
CodeMouse92Either that, or one of them doesn't ;)16:43
mustmodifyok, so deleting /home/user will do it?16:43
CodeMouse92Should?16:43
pragmaticenigmaaidrocsid: It also could be compression artifacts from the software that created the file. Depending on the settings used, sometimes sharpness is lost when they attempt to make the file as small as possible16:43
CodeMouse92mustmodify: In the future, use `deluser --remove-home` to delete the user AND their home folder16:44
CodeMouse92Er... `deluser --remove-home theusername`16:44
pragmaticenigmamustmodify: A specific user's cron tasks live in a file outside of the home directory16:44
CodeMouse92....right, was just going to add that.16:45
aidrocsidYeah, I tried a couple of things and I think it's just my eyes looking for lines after watching the tears for a while. It definitely isn't tearing, which was super noticable. I don't think it's compression artifacts either, I think I'm tired.16:45
CodeMouse92`/var/spool/cron/crontabs`, although it's not meant to be edited directly16:45
mustmodifyYeah, I figured they weren't in /home, but...16:45
mustmodifyok thanks.16:45
compdocmustmodify, crontab is often custom modified. so it wont be undone when the user is deleted16:45
aidrocsidI do still want to see how it works with the SNES emulator that was having issues but I'm going to go install it on my xfce partition first. BBL16:45
CodeMouse92mustmodify: The best way to remove the crontab is 'crontab -r theuser'16:46
CodeMouse92As opposed to deleting the file manually16:46
pragmaticenigmamustmodify: you can edit another's crontab file by using "sudo crontab -u USER -e" ... I haven't used the -r option before personally16:47

pragmaticenigmaAleric: dbg packages install debugging symbols for log files. dev packages are often for software development. What I might suggest is asking your question in ##programming as there may be someone there that has tried to do the same thing.18:43
AlericFor stack traces you mean.18:44
AlericI probably need to compile libstdc++ myself.18:44
pragmaticenigmaAleric: That channel is better equipped and once they tell you the name of something, we can help you get it installed if you have difficulty18:44
hggdhAleric: you need to install the symbols package(s) for the libraries you want to debug. The package names usually end in .dbg or .dbgsym, with the same initial name as the package for the library18:45
mesu-ramaybe you can link the source-code in the debugger18:45
mesu-raeven when the debug symbols are there, it's not automatically linked to the source code18:45
hggdhAleric: you also need to allow the debug repository18:45

hggdhAleric: but, as pragmaticenigma sated above, this is not the ideal channel for debugging programs18:46

skinuxI want to verify the validity of a AskUbuntu answer. I have followed advice from there and aother sites and messed up my system. https://askubuntu.com/questions/908800/what-does-this-synaptic-error-message-mean#90882521:25
nivpgirhi21:26
nivpgirhow can I find out how the ubuntu boost package was compiled?21:26
skinuxNevermind. I looked up what badges mean and gold badge means very trustable.21:27
nivpgirbasically I would like to see the script for the boost build, what flags were used to for the compile command and such21:32
oerheksyou find it at the launchpad page, not sure what boost package you refer to .. https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?searchon=sourcenames&keywords=boost21:33
naccnivpgir: what oerheks said, start at the srcpkg page on luanchpad, look at the build logs21:34
bildzwith OpenVPN on Ubuntu, I've edited the /etc/ufw/sysctl.conf to allow ip.fowarding, but I'm still getting denies going from tun0 network to eth1 internal network.21:36
=== | is now known as Guest80913
nivpgirassuming I want boost 1.67 (not 100% sure that's  the version, but I can determine that later), where do I find the build logs?  I don't see a link  to them in the page you sent21:39
naccnivpgir: what is the pacakge name and what version of ubuntu?21:41
gigirocknivpgir: but u want to compile or run ?21:41
nivpgirok, sorry, I guess I should give more background21:42
oerheksat the end, https://packages.ubuntu.com/source/cosmic/boost1.6721:43
gigirocknivpgir: note that source are related to version u are on now21:46
bildzanyone seen this before?21:49
naccbildz: editing the file wont' apply the changes immediately21:49
naccbildz: did you reboot/restart ufw/ensure your sysctl is applied?21:49
bildzi restarted the ufw service21:49
naccbildz: ok, and did you check if the sysctl is set?21:49
bildznacc: I can get to the internet through the OpenVPN, I just cant hit internal clients on the network21:49
oerheksrestarted networking too ?21:50
bildzso I know ip.forwarding is working21:50
bildznacc: I "echo 1 > cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward"21:50
PaulfraOSAAnivpgir: take a look at conan (also #conan on freenode) Bincrafters just made boost available, you want a C++ package manager for your c++ libraries anyway.21:52
nivpgirok so....21:55
nivpgirI'm trying to build clasp: https://github.com/clasp-developers/clasp, on arch linux. now  for some reason, I'm getting a link error on a symbol related  to boost, it links fine on ubuntu but on arch it doesn't I'm trying to find out whats different between the arch and ubuntu libs to fix the problem21:55
naccnivpgir: the exact same version of boost? did you ask upstream, arch, etc.?21:56
nivpgirver 1.67.0-5 on arch, I'm discussing it with clasp's creator on their channel, and also I have the pkgbuild script for the boost package on arch linux21:57
naccnivpgir: so you tested this on 18.10?21:58
naccnivpgir: that's the only placed boost1.67 is available on ubuntu, and the build log is here: https://launchpadlibrarian.net/377503487/buildlog_ubuntu-cosmic-amd64.boost1.67_1.67.0-0ubuntu1_BUILDING.txt.gz21:59
naccnivpgir: i think that's probably the limit of the support you should expect to receive for a not-really-support-topic :)22:00
nivpgirnacc: well I'm not quite sure what's the ubuntu version of the clasp developer I'm talking to, I was hoping to get a lead on how to find the ubuntu package logs/script, so that when he'll tell me what version he has I could search it myself22:02
naccnivpgir: i just pointed you to the only one ubuntu has22:03
lungaro_is there a way for pbuilder to preserve the build cache?22:03
naccnivpgir: if they are using a ppa, then on your own22:03
bildznacc: thoughts?22:03
nivpgirnacc: so thank you for all this, your help is much appreciatted22:04
nacclungaro_: you mean /var/cache/pbuilder/result ?22:04
naccbildz: i don't know, sorry22:05
lungaro_naac, I mean the build directory22:05
nacclungaro_: i've never used pbuiilder, only sbuild --- --preserve-buildplace ?22:06
lungaro_oh interesting, maybe i should look into sbuild then22:07
nacclungaro_: or --debug, i guess22:07
bildznacc: [UFW BLOCK] IN=tun0 OUT= MAC= SRC=172.31.0.6 DST=10.250.1.52 [LAN IP]22:08
lungaro_nacc, where are the sbuild docs? any pointers?22:09
nacclungaro_: sbuild requires some setup time but has a handy -pnever to 'never' purge the build, or -psuccessful to only purge it on successful builds22:09
nacclungaro_: `man sbuild` and there are some wiki pages, iirc22:09
lungaro_got it22:10
ironpillowppf: sorry about the late reply: library is libmbedcrypto022:10
naccbildz: sorry, why do you think this is related to the sysctl?22:10
crankharderthinking about setting up a call center's amount of ubuntu computers (cheap all in one Dell's), but not sure how to get ubuntu installed efficiently.  in a windows shop we used to use 'ghost' the machines, but that required a server that hosted the ISOs... is there a modern/better approach that can help?22:11
bildznacc: I dont just giving background as to what i've performed.22:12
naccbildz: ah ok; afaict, it's not. UFW is blocking the request; but I'm not an expert22:13
naccbildz: check /etc/default/ufw's DEFAULT_FORWARD_POLICY ?22:13
bildzyeah I have that as ACCEPT, changed from DROP22:14
booglecrankharder, If they are all the same you could image the drives with the bare minimum although host names might be an issue.22:14
bildznacc: i've rebooted as well22:14
crankharderboogle: i figure some post-image script would be in order regardless, so i could change hostnames22:14
crankhardermy first thought was booting with a usb ubuntu installer.  then dd to transfer a post-install image from 2nd USB drive to hard disk.  though, honestly not sure if the partition table and grub would get set up correctly that way22:16
boogleI'm thinking set one up then use gnome disk utitlity to img it and restore to a second drive.22:18
naccbildz: sorry, i really don't know, maybe change the ufw logging22:22
naccbildz: check `ufw status` too see if a rule is possibly in place22:22
bildznacc: i did its just the rules i originally specified22:27
naccbildz: and do those rules allow for the forwarding you want?22:27
bildzone sec22:28
bildznacc: forward rules arent showing up in the ufw status22:29
