hggdhfolks, I have just set +r on the channel03:51
lotuspsychjehggdh: found their way to discuss now03:51
hggdhlotuspsychje: in a LOT of other channels as well03:51
lotuspsychjetnx ill spread the word if needed hggdh03:51
lotuspsychjehggdh: all ubuntu, or just freenode?03:51
hggdhmany IRC providers, many channels03:52
lotuspsychjewow03:52
lotuspsychjehggdh: im working togheter with mquin from freenode with nmap results03:52
hggdhgood03:53
hggdhthis will need a lot of effort03:53
lotuspsychjeyeah looks like advanced and big linux botnet03:53
lotuspsychjewelcome mehhinator03:55
mehhinatorHey. Thanks for the pointer towards here. :)03:55
lotuspsychjemehhinator: the idea is we talk tech stuff here, to have a better support in main03:56
mehhinatorSo if I have actual HOWTO questions, I should still go to ask where I was to begin with? :P03:56
lotuspsychjemehhinator: ubuntu support issues still fit in #ubuntu03:58
lotuspsychjemehhinator: discussion on ubuntu here03:58
mehhinatorI'm not quite sure where the draw the line with my questions, though. There's a fair bit of 'how to approach this' as opposed to more concrete problems.04:01
lotuspsychjemehhinator: its ok to discuss ubuntu here+ questions as long as you keep in mind, to get real support #ubuntu fits better04:03
lotuspsychjemehhinator: the questions we ask here, are like more techy, to make a better support04:03
lotuspsychjemehhinator: what kind of questions do you have exactly?04:04
mehhinatorOK. Here's one, then. I just got a dualboot/vbox ubuntu system working, and now I want to polish it. I've got a couple of other drives, which depending on the bootmode, should be either mounted as drives, or through samba shares. I looked at autofs, but I think that's more aimed towards mounting-as-you-access.04:05
mehhinatorIs there some way to do a fstab 'if uuid exists, mount like this, otherwise use a samba share for that mountpoint?'04:06
lotuspsychjemehhinator: well that would indeed fit better in #ubuntu04:07
mehhinatorHaha, thought so :)04:07
lotuspsychjemehhinator: or #samba or #vbox :p04:08
mehhinatorThat's how you get stuck into an eternal loop. "Nope, that's a Vbox issue." "Nope, that depends on your distro, talk to them." "Definitely not, go check with Samba." And so forth. :D04:11
mehhinatorI'll putter along a bit more :)04:11
lotuspsychjeyeah sometimes there a thin red line :p04:13
lotuspsychjemehhinator: can this help? https://askubuntu.com/questions/157128/proper-fstab-entry-to-mount-a-samba-share-on-boot04:21
mehhinatorThat's just the mounty bit in fstab, right? Definitely useful, but I think I already have something similar in another old ubuntu VM. It does not include the approach to 'check uuid, and mount based on availability'04:29
mehhinatorBut maybe I can marry the approaches. Write static mounts for /media/internal/smb-ohm and /media/internal/part-ohm, and use some sort of boot script to test whether the first mounted successfully.04:31
mehhinator(Ohm being the label for the partition in question.)04:31
mehhinatorAnd then I could have /media/ohm symlink to the proper internal mountpoint.04:32
mehhinatorReckon that is a valid approach? And if so, what layer of the systemd boot process should I stick my symlinking logic into?04:33
lotuspsychjemehhinator: idle here a bit, when the crew wakes up they might know some04:53
mehhinatorWill do. I'm staring at systemd, but I'm properly overwhelmed. Besides several different targets seemingly being what I need, I don't even know if it is the right approach. :)04:54

lotuspsychje:p10:05
tomreynif we set +r we should also set +f #ubuntu-unregged10:13
tomreynTJ-: by the way (i dont think i told you, yet), i tried playing with the ACPI OSI string as discussed on your blog some weeks ago, on a ryzen 1800x system, and it stopped it made it freeze during the early boot.10:45
tomreyns/it stopped//10:45
daftykins:D10:45
lotuspsychjetomreyn: the discuss crew asked not to use unregged anymore, as main became dead10:46
lotuspsychjeusers dropped, and support was dead10:47
tomreynoh, hadn't imagined this.10:47
lotuspsychjeof course, when not use unregged, we get also alot of spammers and trolls too :p10:47
tomreynmy main, do you mean #ubuntu ?10:47
lotuspsychjeyeah10:47
tomreyn*by10:47
daftykinshard to tell the difference between trolls and normal #u question askers ;)10:47
tomreynlotuspsychje: but i'm not suggetsing changes to #ubuntu, just to # ubuntu-discuss10:48
lotuspsychjetomreyn: ah kk, do you think alot of unregs come discuss?10:48
tomreynlotuspsychje: my point is that this channel, #uubntu-discuss, is currently set to +r, so only registered users can join. when they try, they will fall flat on their face with a non-helpful error message. io'm suggesting to instead forward unregged users to #ubuntu-unregged while this channel remains in mode +r10:51
lotuspsychjeyea i understand :p10:51
tomreynok, wasnt sure ;)10:51
lotuspsychjefirst lunch ttyl :p10:52
tomreyni assume some unregged will try to come discuss here on in #offtopic, yes10:52
tomreynttyl10:52
TJ-tomreyn: just noticed your acpi_osi comment. So masquerading as Windows XXXX caused it to freeze. That tells us the Windows drivers must have a specific workaround in them that the ACPI DSDT expects to give it something vital10:57
TJ-tomreyn: Ahhh, don't you just love how firmware devs are no longer engineers, and just paper over the cracks in a single OS instead of fixing their %^&*!10:58
TJ-tomreyn: might be interesting (academically1) to disassenble the DSDT and related SSDTs see if the code can be identified10:59
tomreynTJ-: i'll be happy to provide it if there's demand, but might need instructions.11:10
tomreynunfortunately i lack the time for this type of research ;-)11:10
daftykinsRyzen systems have been a bit flaky even for Windows folks i've found11:10
tomreynit's stable for me since amd had mainboard vendors introduce that bios workaround to what seems to be a cpu bug.11:11
tomreynor maybe it's a firmware bug originally really, not sure.11:13
tomreynunfortunately i also had an epyc server freeze that way the other day11:13
tomreynand it doesn't have that bios option, but has the common server bios option of 'full performance' or 'optimised' (some power saving), defaulting to the latter. and since switching to 'full performance' it hasn't frozen again.11:15
lotuspsychjehey oerheks11:37
tomreynTJ-: btw i think you have one (repeated) syntax issue on the acpi_osi article: you suggest to use '"acpi_osi=Windows 2015"', but i needed to use  'acpi_osi="Windows 2015"' to make it actually use it.11:42
TJ-tomreyn: the kernel doesn't care where the double-quotes are11:43
TJ-you can do "acpi_osi=Windows XXXX" or "acpi_osi="Windows XXXX" - the entire string is the parameter the kernel parses, where spaces separate parameters11:44
TJ-oops... or: acpi_osi="Windowx XXXX"  - got too happy with the " there11:44
tomreynhmm, okay, then i must have made some mistake since i don't think it actually handled "acpi_osi=Windows 2015" when i tried that12:14
tomreyni dont remember how it treated it, though, been a while.12:14
TJ-it works the same as the shell, a parameter is a continuous sequence of non-whitespace characters where 'non-space' includes anything surrounded by quotes12:29

mehhinatorlotuspsychje: Thanks for your help earlier. I managed to jury-rig together a custom auto-mounter that does what I need it to. Ran into the wall of stupid far too often while doing it, though.14:57
lotuspsychje!yay | mehhinator15:06
ubot5mehhinator: Glad you made it! :-)15:06
mehhinatorI'd share my monstrosity but the code is disgusting. It probably contains all top 10 linux bash scripting anti-patterns, and then some. :D15:09
lotuspsychjedont worry, i dont mess with samba anyway15:09
mehhinatorThat's what I lost two hours on. Turns out I didn't need samba anyways: VirtualBox has its own share mechanism with its own filesystem.15:11
lotuspsychjeah15:11
mehhinatorProbably for the better; this is a lot more stable.15:12
