JespersonHi, I was here yesterday regarding a few issues with my Ubuntu-MATE install and I am now here again hoping people can help me.08:46
JespersonI'm having freezes every now and then where everything just freezes out of nowhere except the mouse-pointer seemingly out of nowhere08:47
gnugrJesperson: first check with 'ps -ef' to see if a process is in high level to kill, but also be sure if not any missing graphic driver causes the freezing09:10
Jespersongnugr: I have no clue how to spot those in ps -ef, are all the listed ones high prio?09:11
JespersonI don09:11
gnugrmight a PID is too hight i meant09:11
JespersonI don't think I'm missing the graphics driver but I am unsure, I'll see if I can get AMDGPU-PRO for my APU09:11
gnugryes unfortunately AMD has its graphical drivers closed for linux users09:14
gnugre.g their fglrx driver09:15
JespersonIt seems AMDGPU-PRO doesn't support Ryzen APUs? I think that's what I'm reading09:15
JespersonOh, it isn't officially supported09:18
gnugrcheck these kernels for Ubuntu might help http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.16/09:21
gnugrsomeone wrote tha his APU works with the specific kernel09:22
gnugrv4.1609:22
sixwheeledbeastdid you check syslog and dmesg?09:36
Jespersonsixwheeledbeast: there was nothing in the syslog09:50
JespersonI don't know how to check dmesg09:50
JespersonI'll look it up09:50
JespersonI don't know what I'm seeing there..09:51
sixwheeledbeastkern.log would be the place to see older output09:52
JespersonI'll look that up too09:53
sixwheeledbeastdmesg could be used if you could grab a terminal or tty during or after an issue.09:53
JespersonI don't think that would be possible, it's a complete freeze and the only think I can do is move my mouse-pointer09:54
JespersonAnd I'm not sure if I could do it straight after but I can try if it freezes again09:55
sixwheeledbeastpossibly not. You would be looking for errors in the logs. So the timestamps and time is best place to look. you could also try to grep radeon.09:59
Jespersonsixwheeledbeast: That is assuming the freeze is due to my drivers?10:00
sixwheeledbeastwell yes10:01
JespersonI don't see any definite errors in my kern.log.110:01
JespersonThe last thing I see is my USB-Bluetooth mouse being connected and then it just shows the beginning of the start-up sequence10:02
sixwheeledbeastI did have a system last week running 18.04 that locked up several times with nothing obvious in the logs, was working fine for months prior.10:02
sixwheeledbeastIntel/AMD not APU.10:03
JespersonOkay, mine hasn't really been working well ever haha - I got it last week and installed Antergos to try it out but it wasn't my cup of tea so I installed MATE and the freeze persisted from Antergos -> Mate and also on windows10:04
JespersonBut the windows "freeze" just hangs the system up for a little while and then resumes10:04
sixwheeledbeastso it freezes with windows too?10:04
JespersonYeah10:04
JespersonBut it doesn't lock it up completely10:05
JespersonI saw someone saying it had something to do with the power-phases (p6?) but I have no clue really10:05
sixwheeledbeastmaybe checking the bios settings is a good place to start then. the windows driver maybe able to recover but the issue is the same.10:06
sixwheeledbeastcan you pastebin your ls -hw too10:07
JespersonI have checked the BIOS for any possible power-settings but there's nothing there, I have an HP Laptop and the BIOS is extremely gimped10:07
JespersonI can't seem to even use ls -hw10:08
sixwheeledbeastsorry "lshw -c video"10:09
Jespersonhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/p/Q2JG5gDtV4/10:09
JespersonAnd I'm running 4.17.12 kernel if that matters10:10
sixwheeledbeastNot much product info there, latest kernel is 4.15 on ubuntu10:14
JespersonI installed it via ukuu10:15
sixwheeledbeastyou could try the proprietary drivers instead of amdgpu if its compatible.10:18
JespersonI'll look it up, thank10:19
Jespersons10:19
sixwheeledbeasthttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver this page maybe useful.10:21
sixwheeledbeastthat would be how to install amdgpu and remove the AMD fglrx closed driver10:22
sixwheeledbeastalso look at DPM too.10:22
sixwheeledbeast"See Also" may also be worth a read.10:23
sixwheeledbeastlshw -c video shows you have amdgpu installed at the moment.10:23
JespersonMy graphics doesn't list there, I think it might be too new10:25
JespersonI found this: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1047374/hp-envy-x360-ryzen-5-status-of-known-issues10:31
sixwheeledbeastHelpful, but note Ubuntu-Mate is a little different to Ubuntu.10:41
JespersonYeah, since the error is exactly the same as mine I'm assuming it's the same root cause too10:43
JespersonMaybe in error since I don't actually know what's causing it10:43
sixwheeledbeasthttps://community.amd.com/message/2869331#comment-286933110:47
sixwheeledbeastpeople with windows and linux issues there, a few ideas on solutions for both.10:48
JespersonHI, yeah I saw that one - didn't know if it exactly matched my error or not so I kept looking10:53
JespersonHaha I just noticed I wrote Hi first, I must be damaged from e-mailing at work10:55
