semitemosHello, I'm trying to do some file recovery using Linux on a bootable drive. Is there a freenode channel specifically for that?01:15
lotuspsychjesemitemos: we only support ubuntu questions here01:15
semitemosHow about using a Ubuntu live USB to recover files from an SSD drive01:20
lotuspsychjesemitemos: you need the program testdisk to use sudo photorec, to recover files01:22
lotuspsychjesemitemos: preferable use another harddisk to scan your ssd from01:23
semitemosI don't have another hard disk but I was going to try booting from USB to scan the ssd01:23
semitemosCan photorec find only files that need to be undeleted, or will it find all the files on the 256GB drive?01:24
jimsemitemos, this ssd, what operating system do you use it with?\01:25
lotuspsychjesemitemos: photorec can filter on filetypes if you like, aka .jpg, .avi ,etc01:25
lotuspsychjesemitemos: if you need all kinds, you can also scan whole partition01:26
jimwhich filesystem type is the ssd formatted with?01:28
OICU812Does regeneration stack?  I have a cloak with +regen and an amulet of regen.01:31
semitemosJim it is NTFC unfortunately01:31
semitemosWindows01:31
jimsemitemos, hmm, so you're looking to undelete files on that drive?01:32
adrian_1908OICU812: probably wanted another channel, eh?01:32
semitemosYes01:32
OICU812adrian_1908: Yes, lol,  I'm sorry.01:32
adrian_1908:D01:32
jimsemitemos, and it's not mounted on anything right now?01:34
semitemosJim no it's turned off. It's an internal SSD, so I have to boot from USB to access it01:34
jimsemitemos, so it's the main drive on your laptop?01:35
lotuspsychjejim: he already said its his only hd01:37
jimhowbout this guide: https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/13706/recover-deleted-files-on-an-ntfs-hard-drive-from-a-ubuntu-live-cd/01:38
semitemosYeah the laptop is off now. It has one USB port and one micro SD port01:39
semitemosWord!01:39
jimdo you have microsds?01:39
jimalso do you have another machine?01:40
leftyfbsemitemos: is the SSD bad or are you just trying to "undelete" something you deleted by mistake?01:40
semitemosThis is a guide for ubuntu 9.10 is the only thing01:40
semitemosI'm trying to undelete a mistake01:40
semitemosI have another machine and one micro sd01:41
lotuspsychjejim: that guide is old and ntfsundelete isnt in repos anymore01:41
jimok, so that gives you some options01:41
semitemosIs "ntfsundelete" still a valid program in today's Ubuntu01:42
lotuspsychjeno01:42
leftyfbsemitemos: try photorec as suggested01:42
jimlotuspsychje, does ntfsundelete come from a debian repo? maybe you can get the debianized source and build it01:42
lotuspsychjejim: stop please or be helpful01:42
jimwhat's unhelpful about that?01:43
semitemosPhotorec seems a little clumsy as the files deleted were all kinds of file extension, and I just want to undelete some files that I deleted today01:43
lotuspsychjejim: scroll up, i just told it01:43
leftyfbsemitemos: try it01:44
leftyfbsemitemos: also, learn to have backups and not delete stuff you're not supposed to01:44
lotuspsychjejim: its nice you try to help, but avoid picking up old tutorials with outdated packages01:45
jimntfsundelete is in debian jessie... let's see if source is available01:45
lotuspsychjejim: this channel is about ubuntu here01:45
jimyep, and ubuntu is proven to be able to build from debianized sources (and vise versa)01:46
semitemosI am a camp counselor and I haven't had WiFi or a backup hdd in this setting. That's why I'm in this predicament.01:46
jimsemitemos. oh, is your laptop only able to connect by wifi? how are you IRCing here?01:47
lotuspsychjejim: we dont reccomend packages on ubuntu from debian mixed up01:47
semitemosWindows has a dumb "feature" that shift dragging files onto the recycle bin deletes them without asking for confirmation. I was trying to move them into a folder01:47
semitemosI don't appreciate the blame.01:48
semitemosI am using my phone to irc01:48
lotuspsychjesemitemos: please keep it ontopic here01:48

tomreynyes, maybe01:51
lotuspsychjesemitemos: the less you use your ssd, the more chance you find your lost data01:52
tomreyndepends much on whether they'll be able to access that windows managed partition and the data on it.01:52
jimyeah, that's why it's good that it's off/unmounted01:52
tomreynnot all ntfs variants and versions are supported01:52
lotuspsychjesemitemos: if you know your different filetypes, you can scan with photorec only those?01:53
tomreynand there's no bitlocker support in case it's encrypted01:53
jimcan you boot a live cd then arrange to be able to install packages?01:53
jimyou might need other storage\01:54
semitemosI don't that's the thing. I deleted almost all the files on my desktop. Some were txt some were odt some were images of all kinds, some were pdf01:54
jimor, maybe (yes friends, that's -maybe-) the package is already installed on the live cd and you just need to boot it01:54
lotuspsychjesemitemos: yeah its not good to recover data on same drive that lost files01:55
semitemosI'm not trying to do that01:55
jimyou say you're a camp counselor... does that mean you're at a campsite now (and so options are correspondingly limited)?01:56
semitemosI want to boot from usb, recover from SSD, recover to microsd01:56
lotuspsychjesemitemos: how big is your sd?01:56
semitemosJim it's a weekend so I'm going to drive into town and sit outside a place with free WiFi since everything is closed01:56
semitemosIt's 4gb and the partition of the SSD is 128 gb or 256, I can't remember exactly01:57
jimif yes, do you have more options when you get home? (maybe you should wait until then if that's the case)01:57
semitemosI have more options at home but that's not for another week. I've got job applications to submit for the fall unfortunately.01:58

lotuspsychjesemitemos: problem is if you scan on filetypes like .jpg it will scan all sorts of windows stuff too you dont need01:59
semitemosIt sounds like the ntfs- packages might have that undelete program though which sounds like a perfect fit for what I'm trying01:59
jimyeah that's what I was thinking too01:59
jimand...'01:59
jimit would make -me- feel better, if you worked on a -copy- of the ssd partition rather than the original02:00
semitemosI have access to two laptops, I was going to create the live usb with the second laptop02:00
leftyfbjim: or just mount it read-only02:00
jimyeah02:00
semitemosI would like to use a copy but I don't have space to make a copy so read only will have to be enough,...02:01
jimso mounting it readonly wouldn't write anything to the partition at all?02:01
leftyfbjim: hence read-only02:01
jimjust the act of mounting it that is02:01
leftyfbsemitemos: just mount it read-only02:01
jimsemitemos, how large is the live cd image you're going to use?02:05
semitemosI haven't gotten to the WiFi yet so I don't know.02:06
jimok, do you need help with that?02:06
semitemosThe biggest thing I think I'll need help with is using the recovery software02:07
jimyeah, I'd have to bow out on that one, I've never done it02:07
semitemosAnd maybe creating the live USB to have enough space to download those extra programs02:09
jimmaybe your best bet there is if the image already has those installed02:10
semitemosThat would be nice02:12
jimI've heard of images where you can set up an area on another partition where you can install packages to02:12

JimBuntuzeekhuge[m], yes, it's GUI based09:34

Fox_thats what it was looking like when i was booting kubuntu09:35
Fox_with linux-mint i just get stdin: invalid argument09:35
TJ-Fox_: If it starts with a # or $ that tells us Linux booted correctly, it didn't get stuck in the initramfs. What seems to have happened is the init system failed to start though, which might indicate the live filesystem squashfs file is corrupted.09:35

Fox_is had previously 2 HDD's in RAID 1, but i removed them and turned the mode from RAID back to AHCI, as for now i have 1 NVME M.2 ssd and 1 normal SATA ssd and 1 normal SATA HDD09:47
TJ-Fox_: OK, just looked at the specs for that motherboard to get a better idea09:47
Fox_ok09:47
TJ-Fox_: so three storage devices, which we might expect as /dev/nvmen0 /dev/sda /dev/sdb09:48
Fox_yes i think so09:48
mahdihow can i solve this problem ?09:48
mahdiaplay: device_list:270: no soundcards found...09:48
TJ-Fox_: what I *think* is happening is the drive detection is seeing multiple nodes for single drives - lets imagine that RAID setting is faulty, the mobo might make each SATA disk look like 2 say sda=sdc sdb=sdd and sde == NVME (just my hypothesis)09:49
TJ-Fox_: in that situation it's not difficult to imagine the system getting rather confused09:49
TJ-Fox_: what OS are you currently chatting from? Is it Windows?09:50
Fox_Windows 1009:50
Fox_but what have this to do with booting from the usb? this should also work if there not even 1 drive installed or?09:50
TJ-Fox_: hmmm, I was wondering if you could try installing Ubuntu into a VirtualBox virtual machine on Windows, to prove the installer is good and can succeed. Then, I wonder if it is possible to map 1 or more of those storage devices directly into the virtual machine and install that way09:51
TJ-Fox_: you're saying you hit this error even if all thos storage devices are removed?09:51

Fox_no, i just think that it should work even without drives, but i have not tested it. I have installed ubuntu, kubuntu and mint in a virtual machine, but from the iso not from the usb, that was successfull09:52
TJ-Fox_: booting from USB, DVD, network - makes no difference. My point is that the OS, early in boot, is getting confused about the storage devices (sde tells me that, we shouldn't expect more than sdc)09:53
Fox_okay09:53
TJ-Fox_: I'd double-check the firmware setup and those RAID options, ensure it is definitely AHCI for all the disk controllers09:53
TJ-Fox_: RAID is an obvious way this might happen - even though you're sure you've set it to AHCI09:54
MrTijnHi #ubuntu, quick (possible dumb) question - I thought that once 18.04.1 was out it would be possible to upgrade from 16.04 using do-release-upgrade, but it still says "No new release found" on my 16.04 machines. Am I too impatient to expect that the upgrade is out yet?09:55
Fox_okay i will install ubuntu-18.04 back to the usb, check my bios settings, and try the find the "Check CD Image" and will come back after this09:56
TJ-Fox_: I've been doing some reading... ensure also Legagy USB support is enabled and if its there, USB Mass Storage --- sometimes those can help in situations like this. The problem seems to be the installer OS cannot find the USB it is starting from10:00
TJ-Fox_: I cannot find any similar bug reports about that motherboard, for Ubuntu or Linux in general10:01
TJ-Fox_: so I suspect it is caused by something specific to your system or its configuration10:01
TJ-MrTijn: impatient :) the meta-release-lts files haven't been amended as yet10:02
MrTijnI thought so, thanks for confirming it TJ- :)10:02

tomreynbeta4: the first one removes all others, the second one adds only the "Windows 2015" string. this is needed to actually result in a different behavior16:25

brokemyvpsSo...the last upgrade for grub2 on cosmic via aptitude lead to my vps booting to kernel panic 'unable to mount root fs on unknown block(0,0)'.  The last prompt asked me whether to install the maintainer's grub.lst or keep my own...I chose the maintainer's (which probably missed some detail that I didn't see that was different).  Should I be filing a bug for this(now that my vps is unbootable and I'll probably need to reformat it)17:57
