surgyhello: im running ubuntu 18.04 and i dont have sound. when i run pavucontrol my sound device is listed as "dummy output" when i type "cat /proc/asound/cards" i get this output :: http://pasteall.org/1062236 could someone please help me diagnose this problem?14:24
nikolamI keep ending up in xubuntu-unregged, even I DO have a registered nick...14:46
nikolamsomething's wrong with that I suppose14:46
nomenonnikolam, try using sasl14:47
nikolamnomenon, I'll try that, thank you :)14:56
nomenonyessum, it solved lots of my issues on freenode.14:57
nomenonalso link yournick_ yournick__ to yournick with nickserv14:57
nomenonso your alternate nicks are covered under the one account14:57
surgythere is no "disable hdmi audio" in my cmos15:27
surgymy sound card is detected and apears to be working properly but i have no sound. i suspect that xubuntu is trying to send sound through hdmi. i do not want to use hdmi for my sound. i want to use the speaker jack. this is onboard audio.15:32
surgycan someone help me figure out an audio problem please?15:33
diogenes_surgy, did you look in pavucontrol?15:42
surgydiogenes_, yes it looks like it should work15:43
surgyalso i looked in alsa mixer and changed it from hdmi output to hd-audio-gerneric but everytime i close alsamixer and go back in its on hdmi output15:44
diogenes_surgy, have you tried the live session with usb if the sound works there?15:45
surgydiogenes_, no.... but this is a brand new fresh install15:46
surgydiogenes_, im almost positive that the problem is that xubuntu is defualting to hdmi output. and i dont know how to tell it to not use hdmi audio output15:48
surgyi just checked my audio does not work in a live session either16:01
surgypavucontrol lists my device as a16:01
surgyas a "dummy ouput"16:01
surgydiogenes_,16:02
GridCubesurgy: each streaming application has their own setting on pavucontrol, like firefox can stream to analog but mplayer to hdmi16:02
surgyGridCube, how do i access that setting?16:03
GridCubewhen you are playing any sound pavucontrol shows you their dedicated volume control, there you can choose were each application streams to16:04
surgyGridCube, if i opend pavucontrol and go to the play back tab and click "applications" there are no further options16:04
GridCubeit will only show if there is a stream going on16:04
surgyyeah it says "firefox: audiostream" but i dont see how i can change it from hdmi to analog16:05
Spasssurgy, can you disable your HDMI audio controller in pavucontrol in the lat tab - Configuration?16:05
SpassI have it disabled on my PC16:06
surgySpass, what is "lat tab" ?16:06
Spass*last16:06
GridCubehttps://i.stack.imgur.com/jh5oc.png16:06
surgySpass, i dont see a last tab :/16:06
GridCubethe last tab would be the configuration tab16:07
Spassyour pavucontrol window looks different than that on the screen GridCube sent above?16:07
surgyGridCube, that "box" with the different audio devices. my pavucontrol doesnt have that16:08
surgySpass, yes16:08
GridCubethen on the last tab of configuration you have disabled something16:08
Spassoh, in that case the issue is something bigger16:08
GridCubeit would not show if there aren't options16:08
GridCubelikely you either disabled hdmi or analog16:08
Spasssurgy, so what tabs do you see exactly in that window?16:09
surgysec ill get you a screen16:09
surgyhttp://pasteall.org/pic/2299ed3bd26d73c42ceba07c04656d0a16:10
GridCubemake the window bigger and you'll see the configuration tab16:11
surgySpass,16:11
GridCubeit's hidden under the arrow16:11
Spass(that 'pasteall' website doesn't load in my browser at all)16:12
surgybeautiful!16:13
surgylol16:13
surgyGridCube, i knew it would be a simple fix16:13
GridCubenow share an image of your configuration tab, when you press print screen use the option to upload to imgur in the screenshotter16:14
surgybut my headphones jack doesnt work...16:14
surgyhttp://imgur.com/WOqQtRwl.png16:15
GridCubelol the tiniest of pics16:15
GridCubecan't read anything16:15
surgyhttp://i.imgur.com/WOqQtRw.png16:16
GridCubeok16:16
GridCubeit says "Unplugged" on your hdmi16:16
surgygood16:16
GridCubeso it takes it as it's disconnected16:16
surgyim not using hdmi16:16
GridCubeso it wont show you any option to stream to it16:16
surgymy speakers are working now16:16
surgybut my headphone jack is not working16:16
Spasssurgy, laptop or PC?16:17
surgySpass, desktop with headphone jack in front bezel. i have good audio from the port on the back just no headphone output16:18
Spassopen the third tab "Output Devices" and plug / unplug your headphones couple times, check if something is changing16:20
Spassmaybe you have that output muted16:20
GridCubemmhm, an easier way could be checking directly on alsamixer as well16:20
Spasssurgy, you can also try to disable that HDMI controller for now, son in the Configuration tab choose "Disabled" from the first list16:22
surgykewl16:23
surgybut my headphones are just saying "unplugged" wether its in or not16:23
surgySpass, GridCube any ideas?16:26
Spasssurgy, so when you play some audio using speakers and you plug in your headphones the sound still comes from the speakers ot is it muted?16:28
GridCubedid this work before?16:29
surgySpass, yes and also pavucontrol continually says that the headphones are unplugged16:29
GridCubeare you sure is not a hardware issue?16:29
GridCubehave you tried different headphones? or the speaker's plug?16:29
surgyGridCube, positive it is not hardware. it worked in windows has not yet worked in linux16:29
GridCubetry using alsamixer and see that the "headphones" entry is not marked as MM16:30
diogenes_also you could try to unplug the speakers and plug in the headphones in the speakers place, see if the headphones work16:30
Spassyeah, looks like the front jack could be muted in alsa and pulseadio can't see it, definitely worth checking16:32
surgynothing is muted in alsa mixer16:33
Spasswell that's a weird issue indeed, so pavucontrol recognizes that you plugged-in your headphones, it mutes speakers, but it still shows your headphones as unplugged?16:35
surgyno16:35
surgypavucontrol says my headphones are not plugged in ever16:36
GridCubemmm16:36
Spassbut it mutes the speakers or no?16:36
GridCubein the configuration tab, do you have extra options for the analog device?16:36
GridCubesee it says "duplex"16:36
GridCubedo you have something like 7.1?16:36
surgyit does not mute the speakers16:37
surgyGridCube, thats for hdmi16:38
GridCubemmm16:38
GridCubeso you can only disable or duplex the analog device?16:39
surgyanalog stereo or duplex16:41
GridCubetry the stereo option?16:42
GridCubesorry i can't think of any other option16:42
Spasssurgy, paste the output of the command "inxi -Axxx" here -> https://paste.ubuntu.com/16:43
surgysorry... thank you guys for all the help but i have to go.16:44
surgythank you and sorry for elaving abruptly16:44
